Hugh Nall speaks

Just got off the phone with Hugh Nall. As the HOTTIES learned several days ago, Nall (pictured in the background at right) is now a high-ranking official with a company based in Albany, Ga.

Nall had plenty to say about his final day at Auburn. It gives us a glimpse into the frenzy and abrupt finale that was Tuberville's last stand.

HERE'S HOW IT UNFOLDED:
  • Nall was in Atlanta around 2:30 CST preparing to board a plane bound for Dallas. He was headed west to visit with OL commitment Aaron Moore.

  • Prior to boarding, Nall called Andy Lutz (Tuberville's right-hand man) and asked if he needed to hang back or get on the plane.

"A gut feeling told me to call into the office and see what was going on," Nall said. ``Tubs told Andy that I needed to go; that it looks like this thing is going to work out."

  • Nall lands in Dallas around 4:15. He has received dozens of messages. The first is from Lutz.

"He said everybody's been let go. He said we needed to be with our families," Nall said. ``I'm in Dallas, Texas. My wife is calling me. Someone at the bank told her. My daughter heard it on the radio. They want to talk with me and here I am in Dallas."

  • As it turns out, the plane Nall rode from Atlanta to Dallas is heading back to Atlanta in less than an hour. He immediately books a seat on the return flight.

  • While waiting for his final flight as an Auburn employee, Nall talks with long-time friend Henry Griffin. He owns Southern AG Carriers. That's where Nall works these days.

"He asked me: `Are you ready to get out of coaching?'" Nall said. ``I was already out of it."

OTHER QUOTES OF INTEREST:
On the events of 12/3: "What gets me is this: When I got on that plane, Tuberville was going to stay. I get off the plane an hour and 40 minutes later and it's over. What happened? There's a good story in there."

On Olive Tuberville's assertion that her son was fired: "If Olive Tuberville told me it was going to be cold out, I'd wear the biggest coat I've got. That's all that needs to be said there."

On Tony Franklin's dismissal: "That was the right thing for Auburn University and the game of football. What I mean by that is that you had to do that for the players and the total situation. The chemistry was not there. The preparation certainly wasn't there. The whole deal wasn't working. I supported Tubs' decision."

Syracuse, NY -- East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz spent another day in New York City on Wednesday. So did Syracuse director of athletics Daryl Gross. I think Daryl's schedule was to return to Syracuse Wednesday or Thursday. Not sure about Skip's travel agenda, though I remember East Carolina director of athletics Terry Holland saying he planned to meet with Holtz after the National Football Foundation function where they would sit down and discuss his future.

Doesn't exactly say that Holtz and Gross met, or even saw each other, just that they were in the same city with fiftyeleven million other people. I sure hope Skippy is Syracuse bound.

I think the idea sounds creepy. My daughter might be more freaked out by the stuffed doll that comes to life when she is not looking than in love with it. I think I would be. Maybe she is stronger than me.

My sources are telling me, and no I can't reveal them, that tomorrow morning at 6:59 Jay Jacobs will be sipping coffee in his underwear and whistling christmas songs. BANK ON IT!

Coffee in his underwear, you say? So that's what causes those stains!!

I'm hearing Skip Holtz turned down the Syracuse job. I'm guessing Turner Gill has moved to the top of their board.

Not depending on coffee or other sources of caffine on a daily basis makes it much easier for my body and mind to react to it when I need it. I enjoy the caffine buzz vs the caffine maintainance very much.

Jay G, when are you gonna commission an official smartphone/iPhone app? While this is working for me right now on my awesome palm centro, I can see the need arising where I'd want something more individually tailored to the mobile side.

I am starting to buy into this Spurrier talk a little. Why would you hire Wooody McCorvey and then turn around the next day and say that you have a change of heart? Why would you put a freeze on hiring a offensive line coach?

I caught the same thing ... it kinda reminds me of the Carrie Fisher scene in the sewer near the end of the Blues Brothers where she says she must, for the good of humanity, kill Jake and Elwood.

I also noticed that Nall said in JGT's print version that the word "mutual" was used.

TarHeel- Why do you think Turner Gill is out of the picture? I don't believe that to be the case. I don't think he is candidate #1 per say, but I believe he very well could end up being the Auburn Head Coach.

I'm just jumping to conclusions based on Holtz reportedly NOT taking Syracuse job. Syracuse would be smart to hire Gill over others who have interviewed there.

It was good talking to you yesterday Scott!

After reading about Dooley, I wouldn't mind having him at AU as HC. He has a law degree so he must be pretty smart? Maybe bring in Garner as a recruiting coordinator. Can you imagine Garner and Willis recruting?

On another note....I like what i'm hearing about Pilson at the Miss-AL Allstar game. That kid is a manbeast! He has to be at least 35 :)

good to talk to you too Josh. it's been fun talking to all the Hotties.

Scottie B - I have my t-shirt on under my shirt, tie, and sport coat. It's kinda like Super Hottie, or something. Faster than an Auburn Coordinator can lose a job, more fleeting than the Auburn coaching search, able to leap to crazy conclusions in a single post ... It's ... Super Hottie.

Phreddie, that's great! i can picture it now. if there's ever a 'Super-Hottie' vote on here you have my full support.

Mornin' HOTTIES, I hope everyone will have a fantastic day. Chris, I hope your interview goes/went well. To comment on the coaching search I wish Jay Jacobs would take Ricky Bobby's motto: "I wanna go fast." This search is getting old, so old that I might lose interest, well maybe not, but my espresso machine is getting a workout and I'd hate for it to die because of this.

Guys, my fault on the false lead. As I said, I was just passing along an email I had received. Sorry to get everyone in such a tailspin.

I really want the HABOTN to have the news sooner than anyone.

I'll do like Jay and get two sources next time.

I had church from 7-8 and was teaching a singles class. Thought I would be back on by 8:30; but, kids and homework happened when I got home.

Pilson is another AU commit that has recently received an offer from UF. Brandon Jacobs (6' 230 RB) is the other that I know of. I really hope we get our staff in place soon before we lose all of our good commits. We have lost 6 so far since Tubby-Gate.

I find it interesting the PM thinks Spurrier is interested. It would definitely be interesting. A few years back a lot of Bama fans thought the hounds tooth visor would be coming into play.

Back when he was at Florida I would have been against him as a coach. Now that he has refined his "I'm surrounded by idiots" look at South Carolina, I consider him a distinct possibility. After all, he may be the greatest coach in the history of the SEC.

9:32 AM
Blogger weagle251 said...

I couldn't disagree more, Steve. Darth Visor @ the Plains just doesn't make any sense. Why would we hire a guy who is notoriously lukewarm to recruiting, when that's a need we need to fill? Plus, he's not really lighting anyone up with offense these days. Since when did you think a Spurrier team would be hailed more for its defense?

Hiring Spurrier now would be like hiring Elvis in '77 and expecting to get the young, skinny, Hound Dog version. Just a setup for disappointment

9:43 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am also surprised to see that PM doesn't like Boom as a candidate at all, not even an unlikely one.

As for Spurrier and recruiting, I do hope we would have more coaches on staff than just him.

9:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I also see Petrino on the hot list, which is surprising. Somehow I don't think he will be the man.

The question is...how much of USC's lack of success can be attributed to the fact that it's South Carolina or directly to Steve Spurrier?

Okay so its nearly 11:00. How in the world can there be no announcement yet?!?! I've been up since 8 last night watching and waiting, although I didn't think it rather improbable that there would be anything going on at 2 in the morning... But ya never know!

9:58 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sean, Spurrier inherited a mess at South Carolina. They have been bowl elligible every year he has been there and went bowling 3 out of 4 seasons.

The upside of Spurrier is that he can pretty much turn any of us into a starting SEC QB. Wanna play QB in the SEC. Hire Spurrier. He can make it happen.

I would be most interested in what kind of staff he would put together. He is certainly the biggest name we have on the list.

Rodney Garner is someone also listed on PMs hot list. I find this kind of surprising when you compare what he has done with the other candidates. Garner is definitely one of the more respected recruiters in the southeast.

Somehow I don't think Fisher will be the guy. It just doesn't seem likely, although I do think we need an offensive minded coach. If we get a coach that can utilize our talent on offense, we could definitely contend for tops in the west.

10:05 AM

mrtommyd, we will likely have plenty of warning that there is going to be an announcement. Jay G will certainly get a call saying something is up.

Today the AJC.com gave 3 very good reasons why Spurrier would NOT be our next coach:

"No. 1: The Head Ball Coach is not going to move any further away from Crescent Beach, Fla., than he is right now. He and wife Jerri are building a beautiful retirement home on the ocean. They have a bunch of grandchildren around them. They ain’t moving again until it is time to go to the beach.

No. 2: Why would anybody want to spend the final years of a Hall of Fame career butting heads with Nick Saban? In coaching and in life, timing is everything. And for a lot of reasons, the timing is not right for a veteran coach to go to Auburn.

No. 3: He’s 63. He’s the youngest 63 I know and the most competitive man I know. But he doesn’t need, nor would he tolerate, the aggravation that comes with the Auburn job. And right now there is a lot of aggravation at Auburn."

Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Good article on Nall there Mr. Tate. I don't understand this though:

"They wanted me to agree to give them a month, then they told me I couldn't pursue another job," Nall said. "They wanted to know why I didn't want to keep recruiting these kids. I told them that I'm not an employee there anymore. They didn't have to wait on me -- my locker was cleaned out and my stuff was packed up and out of there by the time we met the next morning."

So, they told him he could stay for a month but NOT look for another job? WTF? What's he supposed to do when the month was up? That's bs.

Steve, you don't have to sell me on Steve Spurrier. I grew up in central Florida in the 90's before moving to TN. I was one of his biggest fans.

10:18 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUBigCat, in a way I agree. Spurrier isn't someone we could attract with money. He even turned down a raise a few years back at South Carolina. Money wouldn't get him.

Phillip Marshall says that Spurrier is interested, which makes me wonder why. The only thing I can figure is he wants the competition and to get back to the top of the SEC.

South Carolina isn't one of the elite teams in the SEC and is unlikely to ever be. Eventually I can see South Carolina heading to the ACC and Georgia Tech returning to the SEC. It would make a lot more sense.

Spurrier to Auburn would surprise me, but the reason I wonder about it is Marshall saying he is interested. I am just uncertain of why.

Can someone elighten me as to the aggrevation that comes with the auburn job. Doesn't all jobs come with some form of aggrevation. I mean I find it hard to believe everyone in the administration at auburn are overbearing bafoons. I mean I just get tired of hearing/reading about auburn in this way. What have we done to propagate this image?

10:39 AM

KJtiger, I see many people, including people on here, propagating that. People state that Lowder and Rane are involved in the coaching search, but there is no evidence to support that.

In some ways, I'm hoping that Jay-G is wrong and that the usual suspects (namely Muschamp, Petrino and Fisher) are indeed out of the running, because that would increase the odds that we really are having a 'legitimate' search as opposed to annointed a hand-picked 'favorite son'.

Yeah, I know, how likely is THAT? :-/

Blogger weagle251 said...

Skip Holtz pulled his name out of the running at 'cuse. One of Doc Saturday's scenarios has Skip being our candidate-in-waiting-who-must-not-be-named-until-the-proper-time. I hope that's not the case.

Fearless, I'm with you, maybe I'm naive in hoping for a new way of doing things on the plains, but only time will tell.
