Hugh Nall speaks
Just got off the phone with Hugh Nall. As the HOTTIES learned several days ago, Nall (pictured in the background at right) is now a high-ranking official with a company based in Albany, Ga.
Nall had plenty to say about his final day at Auburn. It gives us a glimpse into the frenzy and abrupt finale that was Tuberville's last stand.
HERE'S HOW IT UNFOLDED:
OTHER QUOTES OF INTEREST:
On the events of 12/3: "What gets me is this: When I got on that plane, Tuberville was going to stay. I get off the plane an hour and 40 minutes later and it's over. What happened? There's a good story in there."
On Olive Tuberville's assertion that her son was fired: "If Olive Tuberville told me it was going to be cold out, I'd wear the biggest coat I've got. That's all that needs to be said there."
On Tony Franklin's dismissal: "That was the right thing for Auburn University and the game of football. What I mean by that is that you had to do that for the players and the total situation. The chemistry was not there. The preparation certainly wasn't there. The whole deal wasn't working. I supported Tubs' decision."
Nall had plenty to say about his final day at Auburn. It gives us a glimpse into the frenzy and abrupt finale that was Tuberville's last stand.
HERE'S HOW IT UNFOLDED:
- Nall was in Atlanta around 2:30 CST preparing to board a plane bound for Dallas. He was headed west to visit with OL commitment Aaron Moore.
- Prior to boarding, Nall called Andy Lutz (Tuberville's right-hand man) and asked if he needed to hang back or get on the plane.
"A gut feeling told me to call into the office and see what was going on," Nall said. ``Tubs told Andy that I needed to go; that it looks like this thing is going to work out." - Nall lands in Dallas around 4:15. He has received dozens of messages. The first is from Lutz.
"He said everybody's been let go. He said we needed to be with our families," Nall said. ``I'm in Dallas, Texas. My wife is calling me. Someone at the bank told her. My daughter heard it on the radio. They want to talk with me and here I am in Dallas." - As it turns out, the plane Nall rode from Atlanta to Dallas is heading back to Atlanta in less than an hour. He immediately books a seat on the return flight.
- While waiting for his final flight as an Auburn employee, Nall talks with long-time friend Henry Griffin. He owns Southern AG Carriers. That's where Nall works these days.
"He asked me: `Are you ready to get out of coaching?'" Nall said. ``I was already out of it."

CHRIS! I just Googled Elf on the Shelf! That is awesome. I'm going to see if my sister's know about this. Thanks for the hook up.
http://www.elfontheshelf.com/#/home
Monica - He comes every Thanksgiving Night.
It comes with a story book and tells of how he loses his magic if you touch him.
He watches the child and goes back to tell Santa if he/she has been good.
I LOVE IT.
No 8 p.m. announcement.
Where do you all come up with this stuff?
Jay G with #200. Looks like he's finally accepting the dreaded 2nd page.
Someone says that someone else said that they heard from a source that is the best that there is that 8 PM was the time it all goes down.
You know how it goes.
Hi Jay! Never thanked you for the honor. I'm not worthy!!!
Also, for those who are asking, I have NOT spoken with ESPN about hosting "First Take" with Hannah Storm. Please leave me alone with that.
I'm happy in Montgomery.
These kinds of announcements don't happen at weird times.
This is one where Auburn wants the pub.
As I said, nobody makes an announcement at 8 PM central.
I have not been contacted by ESPN. I am not aware of any contact between my agent and ESPN.
Well Jay - It was fun while it lasted.
As in the movie Elf - Don't eat the gum on the stair posts. Its not free candy.
Next you are going to tell me that Hannity and Tate is a false rumor too.
Jay, so ESPN has not contacted you and you will not be working at ESPN?
and counting
Chrissy, get a legit Facebook account and we'll talk.
All this fakey fakey makes me think you really are Imperioli.
And there must be an 8 P.M. announcement. It has to be true because I read it in a comment to a blog by a guy that knows somebody that knows somebody that knows a very reliable source who knows somebody.
ESPN=sellout
The rock candy in urinals isn't any good either
ewww
We can all blame "Mark" for the completely illogical 8 PM announcement.
Here is his post earlier.
"Friend at B'ham news just texted me and said that we may hear something around 8 pm. on the AU search. He said that an announcement may come as soon as tommorrown morning. They plan to go with it tonight."
Guess I shouldn't start that rumor about Jay Tate being Ben Tate's dad either.
That will teach Mark to try and share info with us! sheesh
In his defense he didn't say there would be an official announcement at 8:00.
Jay - I already have one. Sorry.
I'll private you my real name.
Ah, so the Birmingham News might break the story. That would be interesting.
Inverness Chris is a second one.
I'm headed home & will handle that shizzel.
Okay, sense we our giving out real names, I guess I will too. My real name is actually Steven. I just use Steve to be incognito.
Sorry Mon, couldn't resist. Seems like all the cool people here have facebook accounts. Guess I will try to figure out how to get one too....ah the conformity of it all
My name is Kris, but my friends call me...well, Kris.
Kris, you don't have a facebook account? Man, that is so yesterday. I have had a facebook account for many years now. I still don't understand it, but I got it.
Kris - It's very easy to set up and I think you'll find it kind of cool!
Facebook is where all the top secret stuff goes on.
No, I'm afraid someone I know will figure out it is me and it would ruin my reputation as a dude. The wife is out tonight so once the boy goes nite-nite setting up the account would give me something to do....
Do you have to use a password? I work for a bank and have too many passwords to remember. I would love to check my g-mail account but I forgot the freaking password...
So if Miss State announces their coach today and he is an OC at another school, does anyone think that if AU was hiring an OC/DC to be the HC the announcement would have been made by now?
I've been in the Muschamp camp since the WVA game, but this does dampen my hopes. Looks liek it may be a HC that has a bowl game to play.
Man, that Mullen dude had a shot at getting a championship ring. Not sure how it works, but I assume if FL wins, he will not get one.
Birmingham News knows nothing of this plot.
Glad for that Jay. If the Advertiser can't get the story first, I certainly don't want anyone else to. If Woodberry scoops everyone I will be most disappointed.
Jay - Just submitted my request to join the HABOTN on facebook.
Tim
I didn't know Spock was a fellow Capricorn....
I just requested to join, the first names Austin
Jay, you better straighten the Birmingham News out then. It is a sad state of affairs when the HABOTN knows when the Birmingham News is going to break a story before the Birmingham News knows.
I love internet rumors by the way:)
E-Woo is a Friend of the HABOTN, for future reference.
Yep, Kris you have to use a password. lol Sorry.
I've noticed there are lots of fellow Pieces, too.
Kris - I've been a Capricorn for as long as I can remember!
E-Woo needs a HABOTN tee then. :)
My study group doesn't realize that I'm really a Hottie...or that I'm not paying any attention to their plot to steal my grade right now, but instead am paying full attention to the HABOTN and tentative 8pm announcements.
Jay G, you have an agent?
TT taught me that denial really means admittance.
Has there been a single coach in this Auburn smokescreen admit contact upon initial rumor?
Mon-
Pieces? Sounds interesting.
Facebook here I come
scottie b......
Isn't E-Woo a Bama grad? If so, he may be interested in the crimson tank top too....
I know Finebaum has been wrong before but he also said there was some sort of announcement coming too.
Hoopie ...
Sorry, I had to jump off to go to my Colonial Bank board meeting.
But I'm back.
oh the joys of tabbed browsing....Refreshing al.com and the HABOTN Jonesing for the latest info.......
not sure FSJ. if he wants to roll on then i can make it happen next print time.
Peter F, what ya studying?
I know Jay, I was just kidding. I appreciate the work he does despite (or in spite of) his employer.....
Jay G-
Jay Willie just asked to join Facebook HABOTN.
ok, so it's not my real name; it's close enough.
scottie b...the t-shirt is awesome.
I feel safe in saying that I was the only one wearing the HABOTN tee in the dome last saturday. Unless Jay had his on....
He is FSJ...typical MPR to put a Bama grad as the AU beat writer, although I'm strangely happy with the work Woodberry has done in that regard.
LOL Pisces!!! You got me, Tar.
Pieces? LOL 'Heel!
I got Wakeriderof87 and Mr. Spock confirmed for the facebook group, but not sure who the other guys were.
Jay, you know who they are?
THANKS!
Kristina I sent a request to Join. The name is George and I am new to the HABOTN. A friend told me about it last weekend and I've been hooked ever since
Don't forget to add me, Tar ;-)
Kristina,
Jay GT knows Jay Willie, proud but lowly Notable Newcomer
Jet, I always wondered why none of the assistant coaches were considered candidates for coordinator jobs, but they were good enough to hang around. We need some youth, motivation and fire breathing. I think CTT was told to make wholesale changes and he wouldn't do it. JJ said something about never getting a plan from him.
Mon-
Will do, though I'm guessing I'll be like SteveFC and pay no attn to Facebook. Don't I waste enough time on the 'puter already?
Gotcha Tar and AG!
T minus 6 minutes to NO BIG ANNOUNCEMENT, or T plus 54 minutes if it didn't happen at 8 EST.
Thanks Kristina!
No announcement.
tracy, that's great! i'm still shocked my print shop got them done 2 days after i got them over there. it's a scottie b. record!
did you get many strange looks?
Tar:
Don't worry. I joined the facebook group a week or so ago. I don't spend alot of time there at all. People from HABOTN leave you alone...
However, chicks keep sending me friend requests from Tutweiler Prison...
I guess I am an outlaw.
They probably meant 8pm next Thursday
"Outlaw, outlaw, outlaw...dear God, I wonder could you save me."
-Tupac
FSJ, the band Tool has a song called Prison Sex.....
What it this fear of Facebook. It is not the work of the devil. We all know what that is,,Bama football, heck Bama anything.
Auburn produces engineers that build things and makes life better for all of us in general.
Alabama produces trial lawyers.
'nuff said Denny
Denny:
We also produce politicians.....
That's worked out well for the state too... :-(
Imagine my embarrasment. I turn on the movie 'The Naked City' and it turns out to be some old black and white Barry Fitzgerald crime melodrama.
20:05.....A dozen refreshes on a dozen sites and no announcement.....I will never believe another Internet rumor again!
Scottie...got a few confused 'WTH is that?!?' looks. One gator fan thought it was cool.
We've got three more facebook group requests but if you dont tell me your user name here you aren't getting in. If you dont wanna post it here then shoot me or Jay and e-mail. Thanks!
Jay,
I too, am wanting to join the HOTTIES on Facebook. You should have a message from me.
thx.
Guess I'll go back to studying as well...I do have final tomorrow!
Syracuse, NY -- East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz spent another day in New York City on Wednesday. So did Syracuse director of athletics Daryl Gross. I think Daryl's schedule was to return to Syracuse Wednesday or Thursday. Not sure about Skip's travel agenda, though I remember East Carolina director of athletics Terry Holland saying he planned to meet with Holtz after the National Football Foundation function where they would sit down and discuss his future.
* * * *
Doesn't exactly say that Holtz and Gross met, or even saw each other, just that they were in the same city with fiftyeleven million other people. I sure hope Skippy is Syracuse bound.
I thought the Holtz to Cuse was a done deal. I'm a very reliable source.
Cough
thanks for representin' at the big game Tracy. very cool.
why does everybody need to be so secretive about Facebook? all the cool kids are doing it.
They're on the run from the LAW!
I was quoting Donnie Webb of Syracuse Post-Standard
You're just showing of your new linking skillz.
In this case, Donnie is NOT way out of his element.
I'm paranoid. What's wrong with that? You're after my SSN, credit card#, and all that other juicy stuff to create a fake ID to get Ron Mexico a green card.
Look at Tracy reppin the HABOTN.
Very nice.
in 8 minutes I predict a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT from Mark. Either that or my laptop will go dead if I don't plug it to the wall.
Jermaine JOhnson appeared to be heading to UM...but now he says "Auburn doin a good job i like the way they talking now" (sorry for quoting facebook status) but i found it interesting..BTW who is talking to our recruits these days?
Always proud to represent the HABOTN.
One observation from the weekend....I've never seen so many variations of houndstooth...hats, scarfs, blazers, spandex. Too bad Bear didn't wear seersucker.

anyone? everyone?
I don't get either Scottie B.
Astatguy...
I really know if there was a plan, not a plan ... I just think Tuberville wanted out ... and the PTB were happy to oblige.
As far as the staff, to me, it looked like Grandpa owned the store and the grandkids were the floor employees and the managers never could deal with them. At least that was the case with Borges and Franklin. Mazzone was the lone one of the bunch ever sacrificed.
THREE HUNDRED
and one.

Scuse me astatguy ... "I don't know if there was a plan ... not a plan"
it's going to be like this until we know something isn't it...
I think I need an intervention.
Kristina,
I just sent a facebook request. Michael B. in Knoxville.
Evening all. About the search, I, like Mon said, will not believe anything until I see the coach on the sidelines. We all remember Satan saying, "Well, I guess I have to say it, I'm not going to be the coach at Alabama".. BUT, for a salary of $10,958/day, well, you could call me a liar also. Mon- sorry I could not stick up for ya yesterday. I read the postings, but was too late to do anything.
At least I think I sent a facebook request. I am at the page that lists everybody else and says you want us to identify our HABOTN name, but don't see a way to do that IN facebook, so...well... there it is.
Mon-
all i need is to know who the coach is. Then I can sit back and stay glued to this ^&* laptop trying to find out who the assistant coaches will be
Gotcha Tenn Tiger...
Mon, speaking of the LAW.....
my sister's trailer got robbed last nite in Auburn (near the industrial park). long story short a neighbor noticed something fishy when she got home from work. her boyfriend is an undercover detective in Auburn. a high speed chase led to 3 guys being arrested and a car load of christmas presents were returned this afternoon. my sis is extremely grateful to have good neighbors!
Thanks Kristina!
Monica ... I am leaving tomorrow for a long anniversary weekend (NO. 20) with Mrs. Jet ... without the computer.
How do you think I feel?
i think you're nuts! You think the Misses is going to share her 'puter with you? :-)
yeah, scottie B.. crime in Mobile has picked up also. i guess instead of work of jobs, people are happy to just take from others. what a wonderful world we live in :(
Jet, make sure you're set up on HABOTN Twitter for when it all goes down.
congrats on 20!
Bear - You're a pal. :-)
Tar - Same here! Just give me a name...I'm jonesin' for THE name, man.
Scottie - Wow - your sister does have good neighbors! I'm so happy she got her things back and was not hurt.
Jet - Congrats again on the 20 and ummm...why won't you have your computer????????
Bear, i grew up in Wilmer and we were hit out there as a kid too. i guess no one is immune any more.
thanks Mon. she had a big engineering test at noon today. don't think she did too well b/c of it.
Scottie B,
So what did the cops do with Ensminger, Knox, and Nall after they caught them?
the worst punishment ever. they're making them watch the 2008 Iron Bowl on a continuous loop. ouch!
They were easy to catch. Nall was driving... a Southern AG 18 wheeler.
Man, I'm having a hard time keeping up these days.
I just requested to join the Facebook page. My e-mail is the same as my HABOTN name. Is that enough info?
20 years? Mrs Jet hasn't been sharing her 'puter since like the third year....
i've got to remove myself for a couple of hours from the auburn search it has consumed me and my thoughts. i will be breaking for 1 hour and watching CSi:NY even though i'm not a particular fan of that show.
you got that right, dnatl!
"how i wish i wish i hadn't eaten that fish". simpsons, best episode ever. there is no going back. good luck, chris. tough tines out there.
Scott - I wanted to let you know I wasn't the person who asked that question about hiring a black coach. I'm the person who said I was embarrassed the question was even being asked.
So, 8 o'clock came and went with no announcement, as predicted by Jay G and his Nostradomus-like skills, right?
Affirmative Pete
Jay Jacobs has been indicted for attempting to sell the Auburn coaching position to the highest bidder.
Just kidding.
Good night, all.
requesting HABOTN Hotties FB Group
Greg. People call me Greg.
This isn't address to any single person ... but creating a HABOTN handle and asking for admittance into the Facebook in the same day isn't going to go over well with me.
Kristina also has a set of keys, so I can't speak for her ...
I gotcha greg...Welcome everyone!
I'm ready for the Turner Gill HC announcement. What time should I expect it?
I have withdrawn my name from consideration for the head coaching job at Auburn. I think they were just using me as a smoke screen.
I'm in. i guess people know my name's not Chris and that I really do have an uncle in the mob.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Micheal, its well known that you were never considered by Auburn, your agent just threw your name out there to get a raise out of your current employers
ELF is on USA network!!!
Yea, there should be some kind of requirement to get into the HABOTN facebook group. I am not sure what it should be but wedgies and goldfish come to mind.
Face book sounds like a young person thing like my space. Is 40 to old for facebook. Sounds like I am missing some good stuff on face book.
Now, thye Professional uis also on CH101....DirectTV preview -- Anyone know what the drug that Gary Oldham's cop actor takes before he kills?
Hey what about me? I requested to be admitted to FB earlier and still have not been admitted. I have been around a long time. I even have a T shirt comming. What else do I need to do?
Nall said. ``I was already out of it."
Well in my book, he'd been out of it for several years. ;-)
If this has been discussed on here just over look this post.(no time to scroll through 300 post) Nall said firing Franklin was good for football. Not auburn football but football. That is some harsh words right there, don't know anyone that has been fired because it was good for football(maybe woody hayes). I would like more details on why he was not good for football.
Perhaps firing Franklin was good for football-kind because the Mea Culpa Project was destined to make soccer fans of us all?
You know, the whole "elf on the shelf" thing is kinda creepy if you think about it. I think that would scar me maybe if I was 6.
Elf on a shelf is an unbelievable hit with small kids. Mine are 8, 7 and 4 and they are crazy about Alvin, our elf. They wake up early every morning to look for him.
It is amazing.
Facebook is crazy. When I joined back in 04, you had to have a .edu email address. It was limited to college students only.
Now, my dad and mother in law and father in law are all on it. It's weird. I probably would have behaved better on it earlier on if I knew all the old people in my family would be on it a few years later.
Anyway, facebook ain't just for the young uns anymore. Everyone is doin it.
Is Elf on the Shelf made by the same people that brought us Ants in the Pants?
I think the idea sounds creepy. My daughter might be more freaked out by the stuffed doll that comes to life when she is not looking than in love with it. I think I would be. Maybe she is stronger than me.
Mark, your sources = FAIL
My sources are telling me, and no I can't reveal them, that tomorrow morning at 6:59 Jay Jacobs will be sipping coffee in his underwear and whistling christmas songs. BANK ON IT!
Coffee in his underwear, you say? So that's what causes those stains!!
Ahh, the whole "elf on a shelf" thing reminds me of my old stalking days, when I was the "perv 'round the curve" - good times at the nursing home!!
I'm hearing Skip Holtz turned down the Syracuse job. I'm guessing Turner Gill has moved to the top of their board.
http://www.reflector.com/sports/ecu/reports-holtz-has-turned-down-orange-job-288826.html
so D has been going through Jay Jacobs's underwear. frightening.
Economics today, Accounting in general.
Facebook group has gotten too large and includes too many unknowns. Anonymity is calling.
Not depending on coffee or other sources of caffine on a daily basis makes it much easier for my body and mind to react to it when I need it. I enjoy the caffine buzz vs the caffine maintainance very much.
Jay G, when are you gonna commission an official smartphone/iPhone app? While this is working for me right now on my awesome palm centro, I can see the need arising where I'd want something more individually tailored to the mobile side.
HABOTN mobile....coming to a phone near you.
Good morning HOTTIES. I'm real disappointed Turner Gill seems to be out of the picture and not real excited that Skippy is creeping into the picture. Just my opinion.
I am starting to buy into this Spurrier talk a little. Why would you hire Wooody McCorvey and then turn around the next day and say that you have a change of heart? Why would you put a freeze on hiring a offensive line coach?
44 ...
I caught the same thing ... it kinda reminds me of the Carrie Fisher scene in the sewer near the end of the Blues Brothers where she says she must, for the good of humanity, kill Jake and Elwood.
I also noticed that Nall said in JGT's print version that the word "mutual" was used.
Peter Frank - I've been thinking the same thing. It take three forever's to download 467 comments on my phone. At that point, I'm just not involved anymore.
TarHeel- Why do you think Turner Gill is out of the picture? I don't believe that to be the case. I don't think he is candidate #1 per say, but I believe he very well could end up being the Auburn Head Coach.
eddie-
I'm just jumping to conclusions based on Holtz reportedly NOT taking Syracuse job. Syracuse would be smart to hire Gill over others who have interviewed there.
Aubtigers,
let me know when you sent payment in for your t-shirt. i haven't received it yet. hopefully it's on the way. i've got you down for 1/XL. thanks.
It was good talking to you yesterday Scott!
After reading about Dooley, I wouldn't mind having him at AU as HC. He has a law degree so he must be pretty smart? Maybe bring in Garner as a recruiting coordinator. Can you imagine Garner and Willis recruting?
On another note....I like what i'm hearing about Pilson at the Miss-AL Allstar game. That kid is a manbeast! He has to be at least 35 :)
good to talk to you too Josh. it's been fun talking to all the Hotties.
Terry Bowden had a law degree too. Hhhmmm......
Pilson has that 'Greg Oden' look fo shizzle. like, scary old lookin'.
Scottie B - I have my t-shirt on under my shirt, tie, and sport coat. It's kinda like Super Hottie, or something. Faster than an Auburn Coordinator can lose a job, more fleeting than the Auburn coaching search, able to leap to crazy conclusions in a single post ... It's ... Super Hottie.
Phreddie, that's great! i can picture it now. if there's ever a 'Super-Hottie' vote on here you have my full support.
Why the fancy attire? I mean, besides just being super-pimp and all?
Mornin' HOTTIES, I hope everyone will have a fantastic day. Chris, I hope your interview goes/went well. To comment on the coaching search I wish Jay Jacobs would take Ricky Bobby's motto: "I wanna go fast." This search is getting old, so old that I might lose interest, well maybe not, but my espresso machine is getting a workout and I'd hate for it to die because of this.
Guys, my fault on the false lead. As I said, I was just passing along an email I had received. Sorry to get everyone in such a tailspin.
I really want the HABOTN to have the news sooner than anyone.
I'll do like Jay and get two sources next time.
I had church from 7-8 and was teaching a singles class. Thought I would be back on by 8:30; but, kids and homework happened when I got home.
Mea culpa, Mea culpa, Mea culpa. Let me know how many Hail Marys...
And no, I am not Catholic.
Mark, no worries. At worst all you did was get people mildly excited, but I doubt it's life or death. Anyway besides, I don't think anyone REALLY knows when it could happen so your guess is as good as anyone else's.
Hey, Jay-G or Kristina, I've just registered as a HOTTIE (been posting as Brent Lane using my Blogger account, but wanted to use my long-standing nom de guerre.
Also sent a join request on Facebook, user name Brent Burton. . .
I'm not sure about this Facebook thing. Things in the modern world "frighten and confuse" me. "When I see a solar eclipse, like the one I went to last year in Hawaii, I think 'Oh no! Is the moon eating the sun?' I don't know. Because I'm a caveman -- that's the way I think."

Pilson is another AU commit that has recently received an offer from UF. Brandon Jacobs (6' 230 RB) is the other that I know of. I really hope we get our staff in place soon before we lose all of our good commits. We have lost 6 so far since Tubby-Gate.
I find it interesting the PM thinks Spurrier is interested. It would definitely be interesting. A few years back a lot of Bama fans thought the hounds tooth visor would be coming into play.
Back when he was at Florida I would have been against him as a coach. Now that he has refined his "I'm surrounded by idiots" look at South Carolina, I consider him a distinct possibility. After all, he may be the greatest coach in the history of the SEC.
I couldn't disagree more, Steve. Darth Visor @ the Plains just doesn't make any sense. Why would we hire a guy who is notoriously lukewarm to recruiting, when that's a need we need to fill? Plus, he's not really lighting anyone up with offense these days. Since when did you think a Spurrier team would be hailed more for its defense?
Hiring Spurrier now would be like hiring Elvis in '77 and expecting to get the young, skinny, Hound Dog version. Just a setup for disappointment
I am also surprised to see that PM doesn't like Boom as a candidate at all, not even an unlikely one.
As for Spurrier and recruiting, I do hope we would have more coaches on staff than just him.
I also see Petrino on the hot list, which is surprising. Somehow I don't think he will be the man.
The question is...how much of USC's lack of success can be attributed to the fact that it's South Carolina or directly to Steve Spurrier?
I have just eliminated Todd Graham from my short list because he uses the same barber as Les Miles.
Okay so its nearly 11:00. How in the world can there be no announcement yet?!?! I've been up since 8 last night watching and waiting, although I didn't think it rather improbable that there would be anything going on at 2 in the morning... But ya never know!
Sean, Spurrier inherited a mess at South Carolina. They have been bowl elligible every year he has been there and went bowling 3 out of 4 seasons.
The upside of Spurrier is that he can pretty much turn any of us into a starting SEC QB. Wanna play QB in the SEC. Hire Spurrier. He can make it happen.
I would be most interested in what kind of staff he would put together. He is certainly the biggest name we have on the list.
Rodney Garner is someone also listed on PMs hot list. I find this kind of surprising when you compare what he has done with the other candidates. Garner is definitely one of the more respected recruiters in the southeast.
Somehow I don't think Fisher will be the guy. It just doesn't seem likely, although I do think we need an offensive minded coach. If we get a coach that can utilize our talent on offense, we could definitely contend for tops in the west.
mrtommyd, we will likely have plenty of warning that there is going to be an announcement. Jay G will certainly get a call saying something is up.
His attorney (agent?) Steve Mooney confirms Buffalo's Turner Gill has been interviewed for both jobs (AU & 'cuse) but has not been offered either.
Today the AJC.com gave 3 very good reasons why Spurrier would NOT be our next coach:
"No. 1: The Head Ball Coach is not going to move any further away from Crescent Beach, Fla., than he is right now. He and wife Jerri are building a beautiful retirement home on the ocean. They have a bunch of grandchildren around them. They ain’t moving again until it is time to go to the beach.
No. 2: Why would anybody want to spend the final years of a Hall of Fame career butting heads with Nick Saban? In coaching and in life, timing is everything. And for a lot of reasons, the timing is not right for a veteran coach to go to Auburn.
No. 3: He’s 63. He’s the youngest 63 I know and the most competitive man I know. But he doesn’t need, nor would he tolerate, the aggravation that comes with the Auburn job. And right now there is a lot of aggravation at Auburn."
Good article on Nall there Mr. Tate. I don't understand this though:
"They wanted me to agree to give them a month, then they told me I couldn't pursue another job," Nall said. "They wanted to know why I didn't want to keep recruiting these kids. I told them that I'm not an employee there anymore. They didn't have to wait on me -- my locker was cleaned out and my stuff was packed up and out of there by the time we met the next morning."
So, they told him he could stay for a month but NOT look for another job? WTF? What's he supposed to do when the month was up? That's bs.
Steve, you don't have to sell me on Steve Spurrier. I grew up in central Florida in the 90's before moving to TN. I was one of his biggest fans.
AUBigCat, in a way I agree. Spurrier isn't someone we could attract with money. He even turned down a raise a few years back at South Carolina. Money wouldn't get him.
Phillip Marshall says that Spurrier is interested, which makes me wonder why. The only thing I can figure is he wants the competition and to get back to the top of the SEC.
South Carolina isn't one of the elite teams in the SEC and is unlikely to ever be. Eventually I can see South Carolina heading to the ACC and Georgia Tech returning to the SEC. It would make a lot more sense.
Spurrier to Auburn would surprise me, but the reason I wonder about it is Marshall saying he is interested. I am just uncertain of why.
It's really interesting to see how much the chatter has died down over the last couple of days, I guess everyone has accepted the fact that we just won't know anything concrete for the next couple of days.
Can someone elighten me as to the aggrevation that comes with the auburn job. Doesn't all jobs come with some form of aggrevation. I mean I find it hard to believe everyone in the administration at auburn are overbearing bafoons. I mean I just get tired of hearing/reading about auburn in this way. What have we done to propagate this image?
KJtiger, I see many people, including people on here, propagating that. People state that Lowder and Rane are involved in the coaching search, but there is no evidence to support that.
Steve:
Todd Graham just needs a good hat ... and maybe I'd take him a little more seriously.
In some ways, I'm hoping that Jay-G is wrong and that the usual suspects (namely Muschamp, Petrino and Fisher) are indeed out of the running, because that would increase the odds that we really are having a 'legitimate' search as opposed to annointed a hand-picked 'favorite son'.
Yeah, I know, how likely is THAT? :-/
Skip Holtz pulled his name out of the running at 'cuse. One of Doc Saturday's scenarios has Skip being our candidate-in-waiting-who-must-not-be-named-until-the-proper-time. I hope that's not the case.
Fearless, I'm with you, maybe I'm naive in hoping for a new way of doing things on the plains, but only time will tell.
Somehow, I don't think Skip Holtz would be the guy that would be the favorite son, waiting in the wings to blow everyone away. Just sayin'.
Steve, that is laughable to think that Lowder and Rane are not involved.
Jay, do you have a take on that.
400.
