Hugh Nall speaks
Just got off the phone with Hugh Nall. As the HOTTIES learned several days ago, Nall (pictured in the background at right) is now a high-ranking official with a company based in Albany, Ga.
Nall had plenty to say about his final day at Auburn. It gives us a glimpse into the frenzy and abrupt finale that was Tuberville's last stand.
HERE'S HOW IT UNFOLDED:
OTHER QUOTES OF INTEREST:
On the events of 12/3: "What gets me is this: When I got on that plane, Tuberville was going to stay. I get off the plane an hour and 40 minutes later and it's over. What happened? There's a good story in there."
On Olive Tuberville's assertion that her son was fired: "If Olive Tuberville told me it was going to be cold out, I'd wear the biggest coat I've got. That's all that needs to be said there."
On Tony Franklin's dismissal: "That was the right thing for Auburn University and the game of football. What I mean by that is that you had to do that for the players and the total situation. The chemistry was not there. The preparation certainly wasn't there. The whole deal wasn't working. I supported Tubs' decision."
Nall had plenty to say about his final day at Auburn. It gives us a glimpse into the frenzy and abrupt finale that was Tuberville's last stand.
HERE'S HOW IT UNFOLDED:
- Nall was in Atlanta around 2:30 CST preparing to board a plane bound for Dallas. He was headed west to visit with OL commitment Aaron Moore.
- Prior to boarding, Nall called Andy Lutz (Tuberville's right-hand man) and asked if he needed to hang back or get on the plane.
"A gut feeling told me to call into the office and see what was going on," Nall said. ``Tubs told Andy that I needed to go; that it looks like this thing is going to work out." - Nall lands in Dallas around 4:15. He has received dozens of messages. The first is from Lutz.
"He said everybody's been let go. He said we needed to be with our families," Nall said. ``I'm in Dallas, Texas. My wife is calling me. Someone at the bank told her. My daughter heard it on the radio. They want to talk with me and here I am in Dallas." - As it turns out, the plane Nall rode from Atlanta to Dallas is heading back to Atlanta in less than an hour. He immediately books a seat on the return flight.
- While waiting for his final flight as an Auburn employee, Nall talks with long-time friend Henry Griffin. He owns Southern AG Carriers. That's where Nall works these days.
"He asked me: `Are you ready to get out of coaching?'" Nall said. ``I was already out of it."

AND ONE!
Nice Scottie! I love bringing home a new page.
Anyone catch Jay's full article? I thought it was a good read. Nice work, Jay.
i've never had the opportunity. it's pretty nice. ha.
Steve, do you honestly think there would be "evidence" that Lowder and Rane would be involved? Do you honestly think that the two most powerful trustees would not be involved?
Seriously?
Sean, i commented on Jay's article on the other page.
Nall says AU offers to pay him for a month to continue to recruit but stipulates he can't look for another job during that time. why would you tell somebody that? that's stupid.
Mark, I'm sure they are to an extent. I can think of about 5.1 million reasons why they would be.
Scottie, no doubt. That's kind of an absurd offer. If that is the same offer extended to the others, they most be hopeful the new coach will keep them around.
Agreed, Shake n Bake. When I think of a Splashy, bigtime coaching hire, Skippy doesn't come to mind.
Could be that if AU are going to pay them for six months after tubs left they AU may want the coaches to focus their time on recruiting and not trying to find a new job. If the coaches are concerned about a new job they should look for one. Not recruit and look, just recruit and then look.
Yes, I am involved.
KJ, this is the quote that we found bizzare:
"They wanted me to agree to give them a month, then they told me I couldn't pursue another job," Nall said. "They wanted to know why I didn't want to keep recruiting these kids. I told them that I'm not an employee there anymore. They didn't have to wait on me -- my locker was cleaned out and my stuff was packed up and out of there by the time we met the next morning."
I think they wanted nall to recruit kids to AU and not focus on looking for a job while he was recruiting.
I am shocked, SHOCKED, that JGT has let this get to 412.
What has this blog come to?
Is anyone recruiting for Auburn at this time?
maybe he is hot on the trail of the new coach
Jay's kinda like Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett at the Alamo ... he could only hold out so long.
But he died a hero's death.
Nall's contract was different than the rest ... it apparently stated when Tuberville wasn't the coach, he wasn't obligated. So once Tommy was gone, Hugh viewed himself as gone.
Plus he had his new career to look forward to.
Mark, what evidence do you have that Lowder and Rane are involved. The board passed a resolution saying that the school president would oversee this and that the board would stay out of it. If you have evidence that something different is happening, you should present it. If not, you shouldn't propagate unsubstantiated rumors based upon conjecture.
Sensi,
The entire staff minus Tub, Nall & Rhodes are still recruiting.
Steve,
Nobody has proof of that, but you can always suspect they are highly interested and on the phone with people about it all the time.
I'm guessing they have all talked to Jay Jacobs a lot over the past couple of weeks.
In essence Mark, I don't make up things based upon what I believe is going on and state them as facts. The involvement of the BOT in athletics at Auburn is a big black eye on Auburn. Hopefully that has been repaired. If not, evidence will show up.
thanks Jet. i didn't realize Nall had a different deal than the other assistants. that makes more sense.
Are any of you hearing the Gary Patterson talk today? I've seen it posted in a bunch of places. Just wondered if it was another smokescreen or what.
Hugh Nall is a good guy and I'm happy for him. COO is a great job at any company, and I'm sure Hugh's football past will get attention from lots of suppliers with products to ship, especially the "good ole boys" in agriculture. This has to have been underway by his calling as soon as he heard the news about Tubs. No thought about trying to stay in coaching at all.
Steve:
It is laugable to think they are not.
And I can present anything I want. This is an ethernet chit-chat room.
WarEagleRK, unless I misread something, Rhoads is still recruiting also, but by phone.
Mark, you are free to present anything you like. I didn't say otherwise. I just prefer that people not present conjecture as fact, especially when it is detrimental to Auburn.
Patterson has led TCU to five 10-win seasons in the last seven years including a 10-2 record this season.
Got that from rivals.
Not a bad resume. One downside (or whatever), another defensive coach. Wonder what the offense will look like or will we just decide to not play on that side of the ball anymore? ;-)
not saying their involvement is detrimental. After all, Lowder hired Tubs, (do you need proof of that as well?).
They have Auburn's best at heart. NEver said they did not. Just that they are involved in this search.

Forgive me If I dont buy most of what Nall says. He was one of the ones that should have left long ago.
433 posts!! Good Grief JAY G!!!
Steve, I haven't read that Rhodes was doing any recruiting, but I may have missed it.
Nall is one of the coaches I hate to see go. He will be hard to replace. I have always found him one of the more honest straight shooting coaches.
Mark, as for any other proof I need, if I ask, I want it, I don't need it. If I haven't asked for it, then I don't want it.
Rhoads may be recruiting, but he's also interviewing for the LSU job. When a DC can produce the number 10 ranked defense in the nation on the field at a school where the D spends most of the game on the field, and there are numerous injuries, he's good. We need to keep him, and we do NOT need to see him at LSU.
My guess is that Rhoads is gone anyway. My impression of him is that he doesn't like drama and just wants to be left alone to do his job. I could be wrong, but I doubt that he will be willing to hang around. It is a shame because I thought there was a good shot he would bring stability to the defensive coordinator position.
Lowder has had to get more wily since the whole accreditation thing. Jay Jacobs is actually Lowder in disguise. Do some research, it's true.
Michael, I agree. I've never seen Jacobs and Lowder in a room together at the same time. Maybe it's because I've never been in a room with either of them, but I'm just sayin. Have YOU?
I agree, Steve, unless a miracle happens (and we've been a little short in that department lately), Rhoads is gone. By his actions I would guess he has a firing clause in his contract that makes him a free agent to negotiate the best deal he can find. Agents are smart, and our Athletic Department isn't, so I'll bet he has a sweetheart of a contract.
shesaid, I can't say that I would recognize either fellow if I saw them in a room, much less a room together, thus adding to my theory that they are the same person. Does that make sense?
I'm agreeing with you, Michael.
shesaid, with Jan Terri and Tina Turner on our side, I think we could go ahead and allow Jay to use us as the source for this information. Sources get paid, right?
What is important here is that everyone do what is best for Auburn. In my opinion, what is best for Auburn is for any disgruntled coach to find work elsewhere. There were a lot of good coaches on this staff, but even a good coach isn't a good coach if they aren't happy with the situation.
I view what Nall is doing similar to what Wayne Hall did. They both just seemed to be sick of the circus that is college football. This may very well be true of Tuberville also.
I will support the new staff, no matter who it turns out to be. I don't believe in talking a lot about how great things were when so and so was the coach. We need to look to the future.
I could read the 144 posts that I've missed or I could guess that they amount to "wo don't have a coach yet." Right?
Monie, your assumption is correct
What are the 4 words James Brown said every night before he went out on stage?
"PAY ME MY MONEY!"
Thanks, Aubie. :-)
Suddenly, I feel powerful --->
Like I am smarter and better than everyone.
Monica, that's pretty much true, other than that its banter about the BOT.
I thought Jay had a thing about letting it get over 200...hmph..
So it's the underground search now. Anybody think we'll have a coach before next year. I want Au to make the right decision but geeez this is painful. The not knowing is killing me. I wouldn't have minded Spurrier until I found out he is fixing to be 64. I like haveing a coach for 10 years. If we could find someone like that and I don't think Spurrier is it. What is so bad about Jimbo Fisher too(5 mil buy out aside). I've read alot of people don't want him seems like a pretty good choice given his experience.
So, Boom is not listed as even an unlikely candidate by Marshall. I thought that interesting.
Marshall saying that Spurrier is interested kind of surprised me.
Garner and Petrino on Marshall's hot list was also interesting. I didn't expect either there.
My guess is Fisher and Spurrier are the leading candidates during the day, but we will have a touch of Gil and Patterson moving in late in the day. The day will then be topped off by Todd Graham becoming popular for about an hour late in the evening.
Preston Gothard is a tool.
I say we give them another week. If they don't name somebody, we go with my first alternative coach selection method. We bring in the top 5 candidates and whoever can do the best Pat Dye impression gets the job.
"How long will it take you to beat Alabama?"
60 Minutes.
I also have another option, if the Dye impression thing doesn't work out. We do the survivor vote the coaches off the island thing.
I also think Jacobs is doing a good job. He isn't interviewing anyone with the first name Mike.
For my latest unsubtaniated rumor, I am hearing Charlie Strong to UCF.
Aubie - You are.
SLOW day on the wire, the only new news I've heard is that Gary Patterson got an interview and that it went well.
This search is getting O-L-D.
I guess we need to get Ron Burgundy in here to read us the news old school as I can't find anything on my own using new school methods.
I watched half of Elf last night. I love Will Ferrell and I think he'd make a great coach.
Monica, I saw Will Ferrell coach soccer one time. Throughout his tenure, he got a caffiene addiction, ran Mike Ditka off his staff by calling him Juice Box Boy, gave some of his playes salmonella and wore a ridiculous tiger suit. All that being said, I still think he'd make a great coach.
For my last Pat Dye impression, I just coughed for a minute and a half.
I get the job, right?
251, did you have your Wild Turkey 101 with ya when you did it? If you didn't, it didn't count for much.
I saw that too! He's super fun.
Next question. Why the holy hell would this boy from Auburn Undercover (Ronnie) subject himself Fbaum. Fbaum seems to be absolutely disgusted by him.
I heard him on there the other day, the guy sounds like he's reading a script that JJ gave to him and told him to play ball. To expand on your point, I don't see why ANYONE would subject themselves to that guy.
ahhh Holtz DID turn down the job at Cuse.
Turner Gill is on the clock now for Syracuse...which means that might the one that got away. He could be another Bob Stoops type in the making that AU will miss out on.
Sean - You are the FASTEST freakin typist I've ever seen in my life!
Hey, all credit goes to the espresso machine and my lighting fast F5 finger.
Erm, did the Ring of Fire just disappear?
251, that's a negative, I still see the ROF.
The ability to disappear is something you gain once you are enducted into the Ring of Fire.
Man, coaching searches are so much fun, and filled with excitement! Now I see why UAT had so many of them over the past 10 years. Non stop pure FUN!
Sorry for the late start again.
Basics: Campfire at 4, nothing new to report.
New thread up momentarily.
I would like to think people like me have chased away the Ring of Fire. It makes me feel powerful. Ya know?
I'm not about throwing coaches under the bus because they don't work for Auburn any longer, and that's a lot different than talking about the "Good old days". Our problems were on offense, so let's give the defensive coaches the props they deserve.
Am I the only one that associates the ring of fire with Johnny Cash? Just wondering.
Well, I still say that repeatedly throwing Tony Franklin under the bus is the best bet. He provided plenty of youtube material. I do suspect that the reason we haven't got a new coach has something to do with Tony Franklin.
Steve,
I associate the ring of fire with hemorrhoids.
