Jimbo Fisher speaks

He spoke EXCLUSIVELY with the HABOTN ... a few minutes before or after he spoke with other news organizations. There are a lot of people here.

  • I've been hearing your name a lot? What's it been like being such a hot name?
I've learned in this business -- rumors and speculation will happen and you just have to go on. I haven't had any contact with Auburn and neither has my agent. Auburn hasn't contacted me or my agent. It's flattering. It's great that I'm thought of for a job as highly thought of as Auburn's job.

  • In light of what your president (T.K. Wetherell) said, are you surprised that your name keeps coming up?
In today's times, nothing surprises me. The internet has changed the world. The fans all talk. If it's written on the internet, it must be true. The world has changed.

  • Are you going to be coaching at FSU next year?
Whenever Coach Bowden retires, I'll …

  • I mean next season. You'll be at FSU next season?
Yes. I'm planning on being at Florida State. That's where we plan on being.

  • What did you think about Wetherell taking such a strong stance about you not leaving? That's good to hear as a coach, because the best thing that can happen to you in this business is to be wanted. I love coaching at Florida State. I mean that. I enjoy going to work, which is a blessing. I'm doing my best to be truthful with everyone about this. I've always felt like telling people the truth -- whether it's good or bad -- is the best thing. I love being at FSU and I'm planning to be (at FSU)."

  • What did you think about Tuberville's situation?: "It's a sad thing for everyone. Everybody knows he did a good job. Change is going to happen regardless of where you are or how good you're doing. There's just so much money in college football now. Everybody wants a quick fix. They want everything to be great every single day. That's something that won't happen anymore. Auburn felt like they had to make a change. That's how things go."

BONUS QUOTE @ 9:30 p.m.: ``You never say never," Fisher said. ``This business is a crazy business. You never say never in this business. I know this -- I'm very happy where I am."

MY VIEW OF THIS: Another lukewarm denial. He's leaving plenty of wiggle room open here, though I expect that from a Jimmy Sexton client.

Ok. New thread.

I guess people know where I stand on the flexbone, wishbone, veerbone or any bone when it comes to attracting high school talent.

I just asked a co-worker who played at Ole Miss in the 90's if he or his son was being recruited by programs like Auburn, GT, FSU or Tennessee would he consider going somewhere that runs the flex-bone and throws the ball 5-6 times per game:

His answer: "Why would I."

I'll refrain from the conversation when it comes to this from here on.

My stance is you can't win CHAMPIONSHIPS without good/great football players.

I am not sure I can stomach another Jimmy Sexton client. Seriously, he is like the United Auto Workers union head. He and his clients do such a good job of saying (or not) and doing things to get more money....the only problem is, like the UAW they could (and have) negotiate their members right out of that good job.

6:56 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Kris - I agree. I think a criteria should be a non-Sexton client.

6:58 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Of course you need talented players, but you also need a team that executes what is in front of them and is well coached.

All the talent in the world can only take poor execution so far.

Surely we can agree on that.

Not many poorly coached teams or teams that don't execute win championships in any era.

mon, you previously asked if an african-american could be hired at au. if not this year, then when? that would be my answer.i know nothing of t. gill other than his record. he may not have the resume au is looking for, but, in my opinion, his race should not be a factor. in my mind, it's a silly question to have to ask--not on your part, but, in general. sad that that could be an issue. of course, 20 years ago i lost a job for having the AUdacity to register high school seniors to vote. while everyone was welcome, and the turnout was 50-50, the pic in the newspaper was of me and 3 african-americans. and so it goes.

The Sexton angle is similar to what NFL teams face in drafting players that may be represented by agents who are "difficult" at best. Bottom line though, to get the best players or coaches you pretty much have to hold your nose and go for the best talent no matter the agent.

I hear the bigus argument that you can't fire a black coach.

Well, ND took some flack but that was because it was in 3 years. Other than that I can't think of any school who released a black coach -- Washington, Oklahoma, Miss ST -- who took hits becuase of that.

If race is a factor is should be a posittive! AU could be a shining example!

Brent- I believe there is a time frame on Muschamps of agreement of like 3 years. Mack Brown has openly said he is close to retirement, and the current AD is about to step down within a year or so. At that point Mack Brown would become the AD and Muschamp the coach. If they don't make Muschamp coach by that time, I believe they owe him like $4 million or so based on his new agreement.

I've traveld to Austin several times, and I knew someone that was a coach on their staff. They pretty much pick their players instead of recruit them. Texas is by far the better job, even if we Auburn fand don't want to admit that. If I was Muschamp, I would stay right where I am at.

from University of Tx press release last month (Monica, sorry for it being so lengthy)“I was really excited when they presented the opportunity to me,” Muschamp said. “I’m not in any hurry to be a head coach and hope Coach Brown’s around for many more years. I’m just glad I’m going to be able to stay at Texas. This is the top program in the country, my family loves it here and there’s no better person to watch and learn from about running a football program than Coach Brown.
“President Powers, DeLoss Dodds, the administration and the leadership at Texas are outstanding. Coach Brown and a great support staff are in place. I’ve really enjoyed the kids in our program and everyone I’ve been around here. Texas has all the resources, facilities and a great recruiting base. It is the elite program in the country. No disrespect to any of the other places I’ve worked, but this is a really special place.”
A native of Rome, Ga., and 1994 graduate of Georgia, he was four-year lettermen at safety for the Bulldogs (1991-94). He was selected as defensive co-captain as a senior and was a part of two bowl teams. He also earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 1993.
“When I first came here in January and my wife, Carol, and boys, Jackson and Whit, stayed back in Auburn, I got such a great feel for the community and people. When Carol and the kids moved here in May, they fell in love with Austin. If I would have left, I would have left on my own because she was staying here. She really loves the community and the people, and our kids love their schools. It’s just a special place and somewhere I want to be for a long time.
“I really appreciate the confidence that President Powers, DeLoss Dodds, the Board of Regents and Coach Brown have in me. I hope Coach Brown is here for a long time and look forward to continuing to coach our defense, learning from him and eventually carrying on the outstanding Texas tradition.”

Well first off, he'd get us rid of this Jimmy Sexton clown and stop us from getting taken to the bank every single offseason. This man is making a mockery of the coaches in the SEC especially. He pretty much monopolizes the SEC Coaching circuit and uses that leverage to pad his own pockets every offseason. There is no such thing as loyalty when he's involved. Eddie, so far every candidate I have seen has been a step backwards. I think that is pretty much a given at this point.

The question is whether we go with someone like Nutt, Johnson, or Spurrier that might have us back to the same level in a year or two, or if we go with some of the young pups which will likely take 4 to 5 years to get us back to where we were under Tuberville.

The recruiting class has already been damaged so it is extremely important we name someone quickly, especially before some of the current players decide to go pro.

If we are looking for something better than Tuberville, we would have to look at the Butch Davis type, which seems highly unlikely.

9:10 PM

Well, its been a progression. At one point, I wanted sweater vests in Auburn. I moved on when I realized that losing to LSU and UF is unacceptable. From there, I formed the lonely George O'Leary bandwagon. I was quick to throw that wagon off a cliff when I realized that he'd hell bent on killing all of his players. My latest coach-crush has been the one and only Jack Del Rio. I'm still certain that he'll be available in another week or so (mabe sooner- speaking of which Boomer Sooner! Beat the Gaytors, and Goooo Utes!, too). I'm convinced, that if there's anyone out there who's perfect for Auburn, it's Del Rio. The only problem is getting Lowder and company to quit drooling over Sexton's clients long enough to see what I see.

He's the guy that hired Gus Malzahn as OC for one reason (actually two) in order to sign Mitch Mustain and the receiver kid. He then stuck Gus in the corner and wouldn't let him do anything. They ALL eventually left.
Did you see who Nutty got as a committment today? The ex-Gator who stole the dead girls credit card and bought crap for six months while her parents got the bills!! He gets out of jail and heads to Oxford.

Steve- Great Coaches start from somewhere, and that might as well be Auburn. What Bama found in Saban was very rare. The only way it happens is if a coach like that goes to the NFL and wants back in college. If Saban had stayed at LSU, he would still be there. I don't think Butch Davis wants to be in the SEC and I don't think Spurrier wants to admit failure at South Carolina yet. These big coaches have huge egos, and they will not move just for money, becaues they can more than likely leverage a deal with their current school.

I do not believe that Gill or Muschamp would be a step back forward for Auburn, I think it woudl be a step forward. They are both great recruiters. Just look at Gill's roster to see where he has gone to get players to come to freaking Buffalo. To be succesful in the SEC you have to be a good coach and a GREAT recruiter. Tubs was falling way behind on the "recruiter" part. Just like last year when he was duckhunting, Saban was wiping him out on the recruiting trail.

Eddie, please compare the number of days Tuberville was duck hunting with the length of the recruiting season. I believe Tuberville was there two days. During the recruiting season, did Saban not take any days off? To not allow a coach to take a vacation seems very unrealistic. Saban's first recruiting class had nothing to do with Tuberville. It seems silly to say otherwise. Also, Tuberville brought in one of the top, if not the top recruiting class in the nation in 2007. I am not sure where this criticism comes from or why. Saban was destined to have a good first year recruiting class because of the excitement with his arrival, but Tuberville has always had solid recruiting classes. What is missing with the current team was the current senior class, that was brought to you by the Jetgate guys.

Jay I have ask before but got lost in thread somewhere so I will ask again. It was obvious that Rhoads had no intentions of staying at Auburn after CTT fire/resigned. Not so sure CTT was going to keep him either if CTT had stayed our coach. Do you know what turned him against AU. Just reading between lines but he seemed very unhappy.

Reason I brought it up is I heard Clemson is looking at Rhoads.

Steve- Vacation days at this time of the year are called "Dead Period", the time a coach cannot make contact with recruits. It is comming up very shortly.

Biscuit- I'm staying at the Marriot Courtyard in Huntsville tonight. Does that count?

9:29 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Tigerfan- I heard that too. I can't blame Rhoads. I do believe that his defense was exposed here in the SEC. It may work well against lesser talent, but he got picked apart several weeks in a row with very similar plays by the offenses. He never seemed to make adjustments at Halftime, and I just think he was better suited somewhere else.

Jetgate hurt 2 years ago, not this year. The negatives from Jetgate should have been offset and then some by the 13-0 season. It wasn't.

The thing that I really like about Muschamp is his enthusiasm. It seemed to me that Tuberville and his staff lost that fire this year. Hopefully BMF could bring that back.

It also doesn't hurt that he absolutely hates Saban. He won't back down to him on anything.

Nutts didn't recuit any difference maker at Ole Miss this year.

Coach O did.

And without the QB, Ole Miss isn't 8-4.

Oh the glory.

The glorious 8-4.....just let it roll off your tounge.

Steve is not big on risk taking when it comes to hiring this coach.

He only seems to want an established head coach rather than some new blood.

Am I correct on this?

Not happening.

Rhodes defense - hhmm, one question: 3rd and 8.

Why line the DBs off 11 yards.

The HABOTN lingers:

``You never say never," Fisher told the crowd of approximately 200. ``This business is a crazy business. You never say never in this business. I know this -- I'm very happy where I am."

RK, I don't mind risk taking. It is just a question of what we want. It seems people have decided we will settle for less. Instead of a Saban type hire, we will go with a Richt, Zook, Shula, type hire, which is okay. It just means we are looking long term and the fans need to realize that we have to settle for less for a while. This is contradicted by people saying Tuberville wasn't good enough winning 10 games a year. Either we decide to go with an up and comer and see what we get after 4 or 5 years, or we go after a top notch coach and expect 10 wins within the first two years. It is just a matter of what people want. I see conflicting statements.

"Tuberville wasn't good enough winning 10 games a year"

Except for 04-07 when was Tuberville winning 10 games per year?

You can't take a 4 year period out of a 10 year career and say he averaged 10 wins per year.

I don't think Rhoads was "turned against" Auburn.

He has a certain kind of personality that maybe didn't fit here. I like him. He's just not very cordial, I guess you'd say. He's not rude or mean. I just don't like he likes being hasseled. Period.

That could mean media, head coach, athletic director ... who knows? Rhoads wants to coach defense and be left alone.

Rumor has it that Muschamp was offered the job today. Even given a contract. Will have to see.

It is obviuos now, but Tubbs was fired. Just wasn't going to let the PTB make him make changes. (ala Shula).

WarEagleRK, excluding the Franklin experiment, Tuberville was averaging 10 wins a year over the last 5 years.

Jay, Rhoads sounds like the kind of DC we have been looking for, a guy that is content being with Auburn and won't be gone in a year or two.

Tuberville brought in one of the top, if not the top recruiting class in the nation in 2007.

Yeah, those 4-star studs like Chaz Ramsey, Johnnie Lee Dixon, Enrique Davis, Carlton Johnson and Bo Harris have been real difference-makers for us. Recruiting rankings are meaningless if you can't get them on campus, keep them eligible, and actually develop their raw skills.

The question is whether we go with someone like Nutt, Johnson, or Spurrier that might have us back to the same level in a year or two, or if we go with some of the young pups which will likely take 4 to 5 years to get us back to where we were under Tuberville.

I don't think getting back to being a perennial also-ran in the SEC West will take 4 to 5 years, although I must admit I'm hoping for better than that no matter who we hire.

Steve,

Since you are picking and choosing which seasons to include and which not to include. Remove Tubs two 10+ win seasons and see what the average was. It just doesn't work by taking a piece of it, especially when it's been downhill the last 4 seasons.

You have to look at the whole picture, not just the portion that's good.

JD, I would like to see the same thing. I am real curious if there may be more coaches that we are not hearing about. I think there is a reason that Jacobs wasn't going to fire Tuberville. I think it was because he had looked into the candidates available and there are slim pickens.

9:54 PM

The Tubbs issue is from an assistant coach.
Tubbs wants to coach again and MS State is after him hard. Says he would take all assistants with him, but not really interested in that job this year.

Really cloudy on that one. The interviews today were somewhat a smoke screen for the HC, but more of a gauge to see who is interested in coming back.

AJ Greene is more dynamic and makes more spectacular looking catches than Julio, and will make more ESPN highlight reels.

Julio will be just the consistent steady force doing all the fundamental things the correct way.

Greene is more flashy, so he will get more attention.

Question of ethics folks: I'm in a 10 team fantasy football league. Yesterday, I secured the fourth and final playoff spot, which was scheduled to start next week. Well, I was talking to the commish of our league last night, who thought he still had a dog in the race, and pointed out to him that I knocked him out by winning. Lo and behold, tonight he wins his matchup by one point, and suddenly the playoffs are changed from starting week 15 to starting week 16. Guess who my matchup is this week? Yep, the commish. Should I stop payment on my check now, or wait and see what happens next week?
