Keeping it real

Hey everyone. After a few hours of deliberation, I have decided to re-open the HABOTN for business. I have added an IP tracker to the site -- you won't notice it -- which will allow me to identify troublesome posters and handle them appropriately.

I can't believe that I now must spend time playing Daddy and doling out punishments for adults who can't act like adults, but I guess that's where we are.

Thanks to the overwhelming majority of the HOTTIES who make this site great.

TURNER GILL GETS RICHER: Yes sir. Auburn's search for a new football coach may be over, but people are still making money off the endeavor. Gill, the U. Buffalo coach, has earned an undisclosed pay raise at Buffalo. In exchange, he has agreed to not seek alternative employment for a year.

PAT DYE ADDRESSES THE PEEPS: Tigers Unlimited members received an email this morning from Dye addressing the coaching search and Auburn's decision to hire Gene Chizik. Though he basically rips reporters, I think this is a worthwhile read for a few reasons.
Auburn Family,

I woke up this morning with Auburn on my mind, which is not surprising since I went to sleep with Auburn on my mind.

This is a very emotional time for the Auburn family. We all have our own opinions about what is best for Auburn and about the impact that Auburn decisions will have on our lives.

I don't expect everyone who reads this to agree with everything I say, but I just want you to know what I feel in my heart. This time of transition we are going through now reminds me of the time in 1981 when I walked into a room full of football players who had many questions and doubts about me coming in as the new head football coach.

Their frustration showed in their faces, and anxiety was in their eyes because of the unknown. I had a simple message: Whether they had come to Auburn for the right reasons or the wrong reasons, they had chosen to get their education and to play football at Auburn University, which would lay the foundation for the rest of their lives.

I told them that Auburn had chosen me and that I had chosen Auburn. I asked them as a team to be loyal to Auburn and to love Auburn. I said that I would also be loyal to Auburn and would love Auburn, and this loyalty and love would be our common ground which would lay the foundation that would serve Auburn for many years to come.

There is a lot of misinformation out there right now. The media people have their jobs to do and should have our respect for doing those jobs. But unless an individual has served as president of a major university, has been on the board of trustees of a major university, or has been athletic director or head football coach at a major university, it is hard to grasp how the people in these positions make the decisions that affect so many.

Unless you have walked in their shoes, you cannot begin to understand all that is involved in the process of making these decisions.

In addressing the current situation pertaining to our Athletic Director, Jay Jacobs, and his decision to hire Gene Chizik as our new Head Coach, I applaud all parties involved in the process for allowing Jay Jacobs to do his job.

Nobody is more qualified to make this decision than Jay. He is a true Auburn man to the bone and understands better than anybody the kind of man we need to lead our football program into the future. Gene Chizik is that man.

Because of the years I was involved in football – as a player, an assistant coach, a head coach, and as a part of teams that won championships at every level – I learned something about winning. One thing I am sure of is that I know what it takes to win. Teams where everyone played with the same heartbeat had a chance to win championships; teams that were not able to play like that never reached their full potential.

We don't need to worry about what is going on around us. We only need to be concerned about what is going on at Auburn. And being the best we can be at Auburn will take care of what is going on around us. We are an Auburn family. Let's see if we can play with the same heartbeat.

I know winning is important to the Auburn people. But so is character. Jay Jacobs has it and so does Gene Chizik. Now we'll see if they can win. They are our team. I like it. War Eagle.

Coach Pat Dye

Denny- If only you knew the half of what Dye was responsible for. Oh the stories I have heard, from both Players involved and other athletic personnel. Some of those idiots wear it with a badge of honor. By the way, Tiger walk was a clever way to get a hundred dollar handshake. There is no joke in that statement by the way. Dye was a cheater and it extended way beyond Ramsey. If you chose to believe that or not, that is up to you. My belief is based on lots of information that I got while being at Auburn for 4 years and working with the team. Also, Dye hand picked Tuberville also. I knew Tubs was going to be the coach by the time we played Ole Miss in 98. Dye has his guys inside the athletic department. JJ is Dye Fan #1. Also, remember when Dye was around for Tubs at the beginning. How long will he support Chizik the same way he did Tubs? I guess until Chizik does something to piss him off. I totally understand most Auburn fan's feeling the way they do about Dye, and I definitely felt the same way until I got to Auburn.

Go figure.

8:30 PM
Blogger Jet said...

In 97, I was talking with someone who was extremely close to the PTB that if Bowden didn't beat LSU, then he wouldn't survive and that Tuberville was the choice.

Eddie,

Like in the movie The Man who Shot Liberty Valence,

When you have a choice between printing the legend or printing the facts, print the legend

Dude, you are much too close and you have lost objectivity. Again, most of the stories you heard probably had truth in them, but unless you witnessed the handshakes, they are still second hand. Not saying money never went to players from fans and boosters. Most things lose their luster once you get on the inside and see how they work. There is a saying I heard once in Kentucky, "if you believe in the law and like the taste of sausage, don't watch either being made."

Dye did what other coaches in the SEC were doing at the time. Does it make it wrong, I don't know. Were Shug and other SEC coaches bad guys and racists because they weren't on the forefront of integration? Nope, they were products of their times.

E4AU,
No offense, don't want to pull a cobra!!!!! I've read ur profile and I think u used to be a trainer-manager. By the way I think that is a admiral job.
I was at AU from 80-86 and ur right that kind of thing did happen. I'm now 46 and I think that kind of thing still happens. No offense but I do believe that is the way college football works!!

Thinking ahead to next year our first 4 games are at home and we should be favored in all of them. If we can win first four I think everyone will be on same bus. Just look at this year and that should be enough to know everyone has to believe in system no matter what the system.

Is bad as I thought this hire was we as THE AUBURN NATION must move on. All my post from now on will positive, unless he screws up asst. coaching hire.LOL

mdaniel- I don't disagree that it did not happen while I was there and at other places and just because it does happen still does not make it right.

Denny- Totally agree. I am definitely jaded by the fact that I was there and there during a coaching search. I guess it never helped that I have never seen Dye sober and not making a butt of himself. I was a guy that bought his book "In the Arena" and had it autographed. I cried as a kid in watching him coach his last game in 92 on Thanksgiving day in the Iron Bowl. I got emotional watching the "Team of the Decade" video and listening to his very memorable speaches. I still get choked up by them to a degree. I guess it was just bad of me to be a huge fan and just totaly let completely down by meeting him and hearing stories from other players. I wanted to believe that Eric Ramsey was just a case of Dye trying to help a kid out, but it is much more than that.

Will, I actually don't listen and or read Finebaum and wouldn't have ranted so had I not read some of the other posts here referencing his comments. I am so bent over this whole media crap with Auburn and race. As if Barkely and the garbage coming out of his piehole weren't enough, there is a freaking new york times reporter in Auburn doing a follow-up to Charles' comments. I guess it is not enough for the alabama media to be a medium for all things crimson, you also have a yankee newspaper run by the same ilk. Remember these are the same idiots that broke the "directed study scandal" on the Plains. I hear from other reporters that this guy lives in the ATL and is really nice. Big freaking deal. Auburn and JJ were in a no-win situation. If we would have hired Gill (and I would have supported it wholeheartedly) everyone is under the delusion that it would have brought good pub. I submit that the media would have blasted us for hiring him simply because he was a minority.

I'll say this about Dye and Ramsey.

First, Pat Dye is the very reason we just fired a coach w/ a very good overall record. He set (or re-set) the standard at Auburn and is the sole reason we're not lumped in with MSU, Vandy, et al., as bottom-dwellers. There's a reason the field bears his name.

Secondly, I know Eric Ramsey. I was at Auburn with Eric, my roommates were teammates with Eric and one was a manager working with Coach Dennis and the DB's. Eric was at my apartment fairly often. If Eric's hand wasn't out, expecting something, then Eric was either (a) not there or (b) not there. That's all I'll say about Eric. I think his most current shenanigans w/ his "movie" say alot about him.

I wish Mr. Spock was around to check my logic on this, but I've been doing some "what if" thinking today.

1) What if JJ has been telling the truth about everything. The SACS situation scared AU enough that they really were going to handle things the right way - AD recommends to President who makes the decision without interference from trustees.

2) JJ really did intend to give Tubs another year and was shocked and unprepared when he quit.

3) JJ really did intend to conduct the coaching search thru the front door. That meant that nobody except assistants and mid-majors would be willing to interview.

4) The rag-tag assortment of coaches that he actually interviewed was the best he could do.

5) The final choice came to down to Chizik or Gill. He asked each one what would be his dream job. If Gill said Auburn, JJ knew he was lying. I think Chizik is telling the truth when he says its his dream job.

6) Scarbinsky says Lowder didn't like the hire, adding further support to the theory.

7) This was JJ's hire and Gogue didn't even want to come to the introductory press conference. JJ will take the fall if it doesn't work out.

8) JJ recognized this hire would define his career and chose the guy that he actually thought would be best for Auburn in the long run. Gill would surely have been better in the short run, but that would end after the first game.

9) Maybe there has been so many conspiracies at AU that all of us are conditioned to expect them. Is it possible that this time things are just as they were presented?

I'm not saying they are, just asking.

Mr. Spock, am I being logical?

Do you think you can get me some kind of fellowship to study on Vulcan for a year?

9:16 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

I'd take the texas coordinator in a heartbeat. I hear Dye have a lot of input. Doesn't sound good for football in this century. We have to pass the ball well to attract the best athletes.

I've got the real scoop. We were within a hair of Muschamp, who was our target all along. Couldn't work out how to bypass Jacobs. Muschamp left because of him and refused to report to him. Even heard that Tubby was to be the buffer between the two, thus "the job w/ the president" mentioned after the firing,... uh, I mean resigning. That was the move of Lowder, Rane... When that failed, Jacobs got to handle it on his own... with a little help from an ex coach of ours. All make sense to me.

9:25 PM
Blogger coosa said...

Sounds logical Spongeworthy. Spock will be proud.

Wait, pride is an emotion. I'm not sure what he will be.

In studying the stock market, I've often said that there is no reason to cry conspiracy on what can simply be blamed on incompetence. Probably true with coaching searches too.

By the way, did anybody buy LINE when I said to at 11? You're up 18% in a week if you did.

I've never seen a coach with as much against him from the start as what Chizik has right now. If he can survive the first year, he may turn out to be a great coach for us.

JayG,

How can locals and outside media scream racial when:

1. AU didn;t have to interview Gill, if they wanted to just interview a black such as Garner who had AU ties
2. State that Gill was in the final 2. If they didnt want to hire him they wouldnt have kept him in the hunt so long
3. if the reason was "he had a white wife", then i'm sure they already knew that through their research and they didnt have to interview him at all then

11:20 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

OK, sign me up. When I heard that Gill said it wasn't a match I reconsidered. I'm all for Chizik. His defenses were the best we've had for a long time (they didn't break at the end of the game like WM's). Go get'um Gene and bring some talent in.

11:23 PM
Blogger eaglesteeler said...

Monica,

the OC from TX doesn't fit Chizik's profile of Smash mouth football. So I dont see it happen'

The other reason, is if they follow suit as they did with the HC hire, then names that he picks for assistants won't come close to matching yours or mine's list. It seems this group at AU will do almost the opposite of what is logical or beneficial.

I liked Pat Dye's letter and I have no doubt he wrote it, although someone may have cleaned it up. It reminded me very much of some of his speeches in the past.

I am very disappointed to see Finebaum talking as an authority on Auburn and making a generic racist accusation of the BOT. I don't make allegations without some kind of evidence. He presented none.

I liked the way that Josh Moon said he is sure race had an impact, but it may not be a deciding factor. That is probably closer to the truth. I don't believe the being more comfortable with statement hints at racism. But I do know that I would feel out of place in a room filled with black folks, just like I am sure a black guy would feel out of place in a room full of white folks. It is a natural feeling.

I have no problem with that feeling. I have a problem with peoples actions. I give everyone equal respect and treat them as individuals. I will say yes sir and yes ma'am to anyone. It doesn't matter the color of their skin. I don't assume anything about anyone based upon skin color.

One of the issues I have had in the past is judging people who have tattooes. There is a stereotype there that I have had in my brain for years, but I still recognize it is a problem with me, not them.

As for the lady in the clip with Josh and Finebaum, I respect her for bringing up something many don't recognize. There are black racists just like there are white racists.

I do believe that the more we work together the more than we recognize that people are just people and should be treated as such.

OK, so I'm the only one here. Good thing the investing boards never sleep. Consensus is that the FED cut today proves that the dollar is on a fast train to the hot place and our economy is a house of cards about to collapse.

Only safe buys are amreits - CMO, AGNC, HTS, ANH, MFA, and the biggie, NLY.

I think we will be in a full-scale depression by football season. Crowds of 45,000 at Jordan-Hare are not beyond the realm of possibility.

With that bit of sunshine, I'll try to go to sleep again.

For those of you concerned with the economy, I did see where someone claiming to be an authority is thinking it will turn around by April. Personally, I have my doubts.

I have also heard that many companies are reducing inventories, which will further weaken an already week economy.

Why is this happening? Well, I think have heard it is because of Obama's proposal to increase takes on the rich, at least that is what I have been told. Immediately after the election I heard from various sources that people would be taking money out of the economy and trying to put in safer areas, pontentially overseas.

All of this kind of surprises me, but I think the state of the economy prior to the election had a lot to do with it and the election was just the final straw.

-- The basketball search that led us to Lebo wasn't a matter of race at all ... Ed Richardson's arrogance, yeah.

One more thing ... Jay, what're you hearing regarding the initial meeting between Chizzle and team? All sorts of rumors flying around?
