LIVE -- Jay Jacobs press conference

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs will be addressing the masses at 11 a.m. CST.

The HABOTN is on hand.

  • Jacobs has arrived.

  • "I asked Tommy to lay out a comprehensive plan. Yesterday in our meeting, Tommy told me that he'd like to resign. We will honor his contract. His willingness and assurances that he wants to continue to be part of the Auburn family" ... is why they paid him the buyout even though he quit.

  • The search: Bill Carr will be handling the search. Jacobs will be meeting with Carr later today.

  • What happened with Tuberville, going from hopeful to resigning in two days' time: "You'd have to ask Tommy about that."

  • Had Tuberville not resigned, would he have been the coach next season: "Absolutely."

  • Search: "We're going to be as efficient as we possibly can."

  • Has Auburn contacted anyone yet: "Not to my knowledge."

  • Current assistants: "We're going to honor their contract. Tommy said he would help stay and call these commitments that we have. If they want to continue recruiting, we'd love for them to continue to do that."

  • Atmosphere at the final meeting: "I was a little shocked. After three times of asking him if he'd change his mind, he convinced me that" this was the best thing for Auburn.

  • On his emotions: "We prayed. It's a tough business. He was involved in the interview process when Dr. Richardson when I interviewed for athletic director. With me asking, I understand he supported me."

  • Is Tuberville just tired" "It's a tough business. You'd have to ask Tommy that. I respect his decision."

  • Did a 36-0 loss to Alabama end this?: "That's the first time I've thought about that score since Saturday night. That had nothing to do with it."

  • "We have a list of coaches. We're going to hire the best person for Auburn regardless of what his title may be."

  • Quick search: "We're not going to rush to judgment."

  • Paying a buyout even though Tuberville resigned: "We just thought that was the best way to treat him."

  • On the search: "Financially, we will have no contraints."

  • Is Tuberville going to coach again?: Jacobs says he told Auburn that he would get no money if he had another job in mind. "He said he planned to be here about a year."

  • Auburn was going to let Tuberville leave for free (ie no buyout) had he wanted another job.

  • Was there ever a time when you thought Tuberville wasn't the guy?: "No. He said he wanted to do this five more years. I told the president that Tommy wants to be here five years and it's my job to get him through the five years."

    JASON BOSLEY SPEAKS

  • "I was upset when I first found out. (The Wednesday meeting) was very emotional. He loves his players. He made sure everyone knew that."

  • "I loved playing for him. He stood up for his players. When times were tough, he had our backs. He just made sure people did things the way they were supposed to."

  • "He gave me a chance when nobody else would. He took a chance on me. I respect him and I'd love him. Right now, I'd run through a wall for him."

  • "One day they love you and the next day, it's cut-throat."

  • Did he quit on you: "I don't believe that whatsoever."

  • Seeing Tuberville emotional last night: "It was probably one of the toughest things I've had to do in a long time."

  5. This should be interesting to say the least....

    ReplyDelete
  6. is that a "the end" sign on the back part of that desk? appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think the "The End" sign is a background on the computer.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So, unless Jacob's is lying, they really were ready to give Tuberville a chance to turn it around if he could provide them with a plan that included getting to the next level (read "competing for national championships") and the decision to resign was in fact Tubervilles.

Go on Tommy, take the money and run...

    ReplyDelete
  9. I can't believe what is being said!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. This doesn't make sense

    ReplyDelete
  11. Not to my knowledge? Isn't it your responsibility to know?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Why do I not believe a word that comes from JJ's mouth?

    ReplyDelete
  13. The answer to the question about whether Tuberville would have been the coach next year had he not resigned ("Absolutely") explains why the assistants were out on the road. They didn't see it coming because Tuberville didn't tell them it was coming.

so the mystery could be right, why did he resign, if thats true....something smells fishy Jay. do your thing

    ReplyDelete
  15. asst. coaches still under contract and can still recruit?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Why would Jay Jacobs not have knowledge of whether or not Auburn has contacted anyone yet? Shouldn't he be the first to know? Heck, shouldn't he be the one doing the contacting?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous11:08 AM

Maybe "Amy" and "Donna" should give Tubs a call full of righteous indignation.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's like that lie you made up as a kid and rehearsed 10 times before you told your mother, only for her to bust you before half of it came out of your mouth.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Can't wait to hear what Tubs has to say. Of course that may not be much considering the$$$ they still owe him.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So Dr. Gogue stills want Tommy to help out AU? Maybe there is hope he can be AD?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Leach won't be praying with JJ

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why do I not believe a word that comes from JJ's mouth?

Dunno. I actually do believe him. Tuberville's heart definitely was not in it this year and to be frank, I think Tubs figured the beginning of a losing streak (at least with him and his offensive staff in place) against Alabama was in the cards. So it was this year or next. Why not take the money and run? He's rich.

5 million dollars is a ton O' dough even in current dollars. If you earn 100 grand a year, you'd have to work a full fifty years to get to that point. (Coaches are overpaid.)

Will tubs come on at the end and say "I concur"?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nice question JGT

    ReplyDelete
  25. What if Tub comes out and says Jacobs is making this whole thing up?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anonymous11:13 AM

I'll give Jacobs this, he can work the room.

He calls the media guys by name.

Good salesman. Guess that's how he got this gig.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So do you think the buyout is Auburn's way to keep him from going anywhere else?

    ReplyDelete
  28. tell the truth and treat people the way you want to be treated

    ReplyDelete
  29. "Tell the truth and treat people the way they want to be treated"

    wow.

Thanks for the coverage, Jay G.

I got to go earn a living now. No buyout awaiting me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's not a hard decision for Tommy on the buyout. Hmm, do I want to not work and get paid millions of dollars for it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. did anyone else just lose audio?

    ReplyDelete
  41. why work your brains out when you can get a buyout and not work....guess that's hard for young guys who are hungry to understand

    ReplyDelete
  42. Things that make you go hmmmmmm?

    ReplyDelete
  43. personal problems can make you do a lot of things others don't understand

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think this is great. I love TT, I really do, and have stated that many times before, but now we have to add HIM to the list of people that will be meddling around the program next year. As if Lowder's crew and an incompetent AD weren't enough, the next coach will also have TT looking over his shoulder, calling his recruits (wth???), and generally being a meddler. Fan-freaking-tastic situation they've created there.

    ReplyDelete
  45. F baum is a complete idiot and have lost what little respect i have for him. What an A--bag!

    ReplyDelete
  46. What did finebaum do?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I heard you on the radio Jay...good question. I must say that if this is the way is went down and Jacobs is shooting straight, I have gained a new found respest for the admin and I was completely wrong in my assessment of this situation. Thanks CTT for all you've done for the AU family. WAR EAGLE...lets go find a head coach!

    ReplyDelete
  48. yes, I don't want him in a Pay Dye situation

    ReplyDelete
  49. no financial constraints?? butch davis?

    ReplyDelete
  50. why does Doug not buy it? Is he all knowing?!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Montez Robinson.
The 6-4, 235-pound Robinson received numerous early offers. He quickly narrowed his list to Alabama, Auburn and Georgia before committing to the Tigers last summer.

"I'm no longer committed to Auburn," Robinson on Wednesday evening. "It's Georgia or Alabama now. I won't make my decision until signing day."

"I like the same things about Georgia that I like about Alabama. They're both about the same."

While Robinson lists Alabama and Georgia as his two finalists, some believe that when all is said and done he might end up at Purdue.

Jonathan Atchison As for Atchison, the 6-3, 215-pound Douglas HS linebacker says that Tuberville's departure has left him with second thoughts.
"I'm still committed to Auburn," Atchison said on Wednesday, "but Alabama is my number one team right now."

"I'm going to wait and see who Auburn brings in before I de-commit or anything like that," Atchison added. "Alabama is in great shape with me. I just want to see which direction Auburn goes in."

    ReplyDelete
  52. he said you cannot believe anything JJ says and this is a complete farce. Just giving CTT money is just crazy Blah Blah Blah
    A--BAG!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I know I'm late replying to some of yesterday's posts, but as far as yesterday when I said it was easier to get to a BCS bowl in the ACC year in and year out, I was talking about a BCS BOWL. Not the BCS title game. I think some of you misunderstood, my point was that it is easier to win a conference championship in the ACC than the SEC.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So -- either you think a man just stood up there and LIED.

LIED and talked about praying and said God bless -- he lied about CTT saying he was tired.

Lied about asking him to reconsider.

You all got upset about ABSOLUETLY NOTHING yesterday.

  59. Some interesting tidbits from the ESPN article by Billy Tucker on Tuberville's firing/resignation:

"Auburn's recruiting class is sitting just outside our top 15 despite not claiming a single ESPNU 150 prospect. The group is led by Travante Stallworth (Leesville, La.), ESPN's No. 21 overall athlete, who had only an offer from Tulsa when he committed to the Tigers this past summer. The class is filled with prospects who, like Stallworth, do not boast a plethora of BCS offers to entice them away from their commitments to Auburn at this time.

    ...

Whoever gets the job at Auburn will be walking into a great situation in regards to long-term recruiting. Tuberville won without signing a multitude of real difference-makers, particularly at receiver and quarterback, in his tenure.
    "

Tuberville's recruiting on offense in the time since the classes that brought in Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Carnell Williams, Devin Aromoshudu (sp?) and Ben Obamanu has been way, way overrated. (That's not a slap at the QB's on the current scholarship roster. Dunno what kind of players they are and won't until they get some decent coaching.)

We get all these "highly rated" classes but it's always been a mystery to me how they can be so highly rated when they are filled with second tier prospects that AU is fighting for with schools like Troy, Southern Miss, Tulsa, etc.

I think it was time (and maybe past time) for Tuberville to go. The Franklin debacle (read "the way Tommy didn't really even interview Franklin in depth and didn't talk to him much after he was hired", not "Franklin was a bad coach") points in that direction. The comments about "the type of players" that AU can get (Bo Jackson? Tracy Rocker? Jason Campbell? Ronnie and the Cadillac?) points that way too.

Tommy Tuberville had a great run but he wanted to put it on cruise control in a conference that requires both hands on the wheel and pedal to the metal.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anonymous11:38 AM

    Jay,

As expected, Finebaum's take is that what Jacobs says is pretty much 90% BS. Is that an accurate % you think?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Chris you seem more fired up than some of the people you seem to be upset at for being fired up yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  62. If Doug and Longshore are going to say they don't believe a word out of JJ's mouth, they should at least say why.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Tuberville wasn't going to be fired. I believe that. I've heard it from both sides of the equation.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Chris - Switch to decaf.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well RK, people who jumped the gun and then jumped on anyone who defended thier University after some said they became:

    1. A laughing stock.

    2. Embarrassment

    3. Disgusting

Yeah, sorry if I call people out for blasting this Admin.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wow - He actually resigned. Now the question is why.

    ReplyDelete
  67. My question is this. If the plan was for Tubs to stay on, why did they not say something on Monday or Tuesday before he resigned on Wednesday?

    ReplyDelete
  68. well it's easier to take knowing he resigned. What's TT going to do for Gogue, drive him around town in a lincoln towncar?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well, unless you think JJ lied....

He said CTT hadn't commited to coming back Mon or Tues.

    ReplyDelete
  70. because you would not listen if they said Auburn did a good thing for tommy and Auburn is a special place. Wheter it was word for word how jay described it happened, it really does not matter. The money was "thanks for the memories" money. We appreciate you. That is why we are the auburn family and I will belive it went down similar to how it was described. Maybe I am just not cynical enough.

    ReplyDelete
  71. JGT: "Tuberville wasn't going to be fired. I believe that. I've heard it from both sides of the equation."

If JGT says it, I believe it. And again, that accounts for the fact that assistants left to recruit. Tuberville was staying if he wanted. He didn't want. Some of those coaches wives ought to call back in today and vent their anger in the correct direction.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Lincoln Towncar is so governmental limo fleet car.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think Jacobs is full of crap. If he wasn't planning on firing Tuberville he would have come out and said we want Tommy as long as he wants to be here.

Everyone in this state was saying it's a matter of time before Tuberville gets fired this week. Why were we contacting other coaches if we had no intent of firing him?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Chris,

It's just people and their opinions. I disagreed with those people yesterday, but I didn't let it get to me. You seem like it got to you that some disagreed with your side of it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Anonymous11:46 AM

Why is Finebaum an idiot for thinking it was dumb of AU to pay Tubbs when he quit? I agree with that. You think someone who went 5-7 deserves six million dollars??

    ReplyDelete
  76. i am actually beginning to buy this story.

Mon: would you prefer a bulletproof range rover?

    ReplyDelete
  77. If Jacobs jumped to the mic everytime fans started screaming he'd do nothing else. Come on.

    ReplyDelete
  78. "I think Jacobs is full of crap. If he wasn't planning on firing Tuberville he would have come out and said we want Tommy as long as he wants to be here. "

Sounds familiar, rewind one year and reverse the two people you are talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  79. The name I am hearing that has not hit the media yet is Charlie Strong.

    ReplyDelete
  80. If money truly is not an issue, an inexperienced Charlie Strong won't be an option.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anonymous11:49 AM

"Tuberville wasn't going to be fired."

Jesus, what would it take for him to be fired? I cant really believe this and am frightened of who they will hire.

    ReplyDelete
  82. "No Financial Constraints"

I'm in Florida and I just heard Jimmy Sexton yell Cha-Ching!

    ReplyDelete
  83. It was just an honest question. I believe in the Auburn family as well, but families can have bad apples.

I'll go with what JJ just said today, but I don't think you can blame some people for being cynical given what happened in 2003. Doesn't mean history has repeated itself, but it's not as if there is no precedent to go on here.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I was thinking more along the lines of the Mercedes Benz F700 Limo. That's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The part about money not being an issue is one of the things I do take at face value from that presser.

I think the "Jays" know the stakes are higher now and I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4.5 or 5 million dollar figure when this is all said and done.

That much money would be for a "name", not for the likes of a Muschamp or Strong, they can be had for much much less.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Hip-Hop - That's exactly what I've been thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  87. You guys really believe he just suddenly four days after he said he wanted to be here, decided he wanted to resign? And then the boosters who like him so much decided they would give him 6 mil anyways? Get real.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I do not think sexton will geyt any of the buyout. He gets paid on the front end.

    ReplyDelete
  89. The closest Charlie Strong will get to be Auburn's coach is a booth at Byrons Smokehouse

    ReplyDelete
  90. I am not saying it will be STrong. the guy that gets the job may not have been mentioned yet.

I am just hearing that for recruiting and great Defense, Strong has been mentioned as a candidate for head-coach.

There is some thought he could bring some offensive assistants with him.

    Contact has been made.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Derek Dooley,

    Bring in Searles as OC
    Bring back Rodney Gardner
Keep Willis and Rhodes if possible

    ReplyDelete
  92. Barkley - There are obviously missing pieces to the story. However, I don't think "they would have announced it earlier if he was staying" is a legitimate reason for thinking JJ's version is 100% false.

    ReplyDelete
  93. back to my comment, that personal problems make us do things that others will never understand....been there done that

    ReplyDelete
  94. Rodney coming back as recruiting coordinator would be nice.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Well contact has to be made with a minority for the BCA's sake. But if a minority is the most qualified, I am all for it

    ReplyDelete
  96. You can't please all of the people all of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Turner Gill would get a look before Charlie Strong.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Anonymous11:58 AM

Everything Jacobs says about Tuberville definately staying if he didn't resign is a contradiction to how the situation was handled.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Turner Gill will be at Syracuse anyway

    ReplyDelete
  100. I guess I'm just being cynical or something, but Jay Jacobs story makes no sense at all so I'm not believing it. I understand he sounds sincere, so most people want to believe it all, but just think about what was going on earlier this week.

Turner Gill = 14-21 as a head coach.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Why could it not be that simple? I agree CTT had made some enemies, but in my judgement the events relayed by JJ are just as plausible. Look, I do beleive they wanted a plan and the more Tubbs thought about it he thought hey I m not willing to do this. It could be just that simple. I cannot believe that JJ would get up and god bless everyone and say the prayed about it and answer questions for 25 minutes and be telling the biggest lie of his life.

    ReplyDelete
  102. anybody else out there in their mid 50's that know what I am talking about or do guys not own up to that? Hard for young guys to understand

    ReplyDelete
  103. Gill has experience as a HC and he's been at Buffalo who is going to play in their 1st bowl game ever.

I was just doing the comparison with Charlie Strong and Gill is a much better candidate.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Anonymous12:02 PM

Will Muschamp's house is now off the market in Auburn.

    Just saying...

    ReplyDelete
  105. Anonymous12:03 PM

If you listen to JJ, and not the idiot talking heads, you have to at least give some credence to what he's saying. It would take some huge ones to concoct, prepare, and deliver a lie about Coach T's resignation. Now, let's hope this coaching hire leaves us all excited.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I'm not sure that it was foregone conclusion that Tuberville was saying, but I honestly believe there was no effort to fire him, either.

Both sides were relaying their thoughts. Tuberville pressed the issue yesterday and that led to a resignation.

    He wasn't forced to resign.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Anonymous12:05 PM

    What up peeps?

How do you know when a man is lying?

    ReplyDelete
  108. According to most I should ask you jay, how much is JJ paying you to say that?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Jay G, CTT pressed what issue?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Anonymous12:06 PM

    Kristina,

He probably pressed the issue of why he hadn't been given the proverbial public "vote of confidence" that he would indeed return.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I guess it is time to start tracking flights.

    ReplyDelete
  112. What do you mean Tuberville pressed the issue?

    What issue?

    ReplyDelete
  113. JGT, not trying to pimp any other blogs (love The HABOTN) but this a nice interview by Goldberg.
    http://blog.al.com/goldmine/2008/12/tuberville_says_he_has_no_anom.html

    ReplyDelete
  114. maybe the economy has left you all so cynical
Thanks Jay for all the hard work because I know you have had a relationship with all of them

    ReplyDelete
  115. So Monday morning Tommy wanted to be here five years, and somewhere between then and yesterday afternoon he changed his outlook completely.

Wouldn't you guys agree even if you believe the story that Tuberville willingly resigned that something shady went down to change things that quickly?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Jay, How much stuff do you find out is "off the record" or unreportable?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Anonymous12:09 PM

    Bingo barkley...

Auburn was using the delay to shop for a coach, IMO.

Tuberville knew it and pushed the issue which resulted in a resolution.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I don't know what happened and I don't care what happened. It's done now. I just want a coach that can win more than 2/3's of his games. I want a coach that can win when he is expected to. I want a coach who will show some fire.

I appreciate what Tuberville did, but the program was in decline. It wasn't too hard to see that. It's time to move on.

    ReplyDelete
  119. What is the benfit of using a search firm? Who is Carr?

    ReplyDelete
  120. The impression that I got was that yesterday afternoon Tub was pissed that he hadn't heard anything and wanted an answer. They met and apparently Tub at some point decided it was best to move on.

I also get the impression that wasn't the response Jacobs was expecting.

    ReplyDelete
  121. FSJ, going to have to respectfully disagree with you there. Trying to save face and hire a guy behind the scenes after our 2003 media disaster sounds like a bad idea. If they wanted Tuberville gone, well it doesn't take 4 days after the season ends to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Anonymous12:12 PM

we can watch Turner Gill tomorrow night coach in the MAC championship game. Sure wish Buffalo was slated for an early bowl game rather than ~Dec 30. I think he'd be a great coach for AU, but I, like all others here, really don't know enough about him.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Antoine Carr, formerly of the Atlanta Hawks?

Greg Carr, formerly of the Auburn Tigers?

Actually, Carr is over the firm that is going to assist with the coaching search.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Doesn't matter. Turner Gill will be at Syracuse in January

    ReplyDelete
  125. Exactly FSJ, so where Jacobs is lying is when he is telling people that he knew all along that he wanted Tubs to be the coach next year. If he knew that, and Tommy said he wanted to be here five years, it wouldn't have been drug out. It's pretty simple.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Much like when Tommy came back after his hunting trip last year and said he was always going to be staying at Auburn? Yet, he couldn't say anything before that when given a chance?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Barkley, your argument hinges around the fact that Jacobs drug it out. We don't know that. It could have been CTT for all we know.

    ReplyDelete
  128. doug...did your coach at Faulkner not leave for personal reasons...why is that so hard to believe.....can't reiterate the mid 50's reference again...

    ReplyDelete
  129. So what's your point RK? I wasn't saying Tuberville doesn't lie, we really can't believe either one of them, and will probably never know what really happened.

I'm just betting what really happened isn't what Jacobs said because it doesn't add up.

    ReplyDelete
  130. personal things cause us to do things that others will never understand......need I say more to the roundtable hosts

    ReplyDelete
  131. I think many of you are missing the point here. The question isn't whether we should blame Jacobs or Tuberville? The question is was this handled in the best interest of Auburn. Nobody is worried about Tuberville. He will be fine. He wouldn't have any problem coaching somewhere else if he wanted to.

The way this was handled was poor. This was very embarrassing. While Jacobs has appeared to do a good job as Athletic Director, he didn't show good business skills in handling this.

Look at what they did with recruiting in terms of how this was handled. It could have been handled much better and a transition plan could have been in place that wouldn't have the head coach leaving without the knowledge of coaches out on the road. That is very poor planning.

There is a reason the coach in waiting thing has become popular. This is very similar to the problems caused in 2003 that partially caused this unique season. We will feel the effects from what happened yesterday 5 years down the road when the current recruits start graduating.

That is the reality of major college football. That is why FSU and Texas have plans in place. Blaming Jacobs, or Lowder, or Tuberville is pointless. What should have happened was the best interest of Auburn should have been protected, and those interests were not.

  132. My point is, everyone eventually gave Tub the benefit of the doubt after last December's mistake. If Auburn makes a good hire, nobody will remember Jacobs "lies".

  133. WarEagleRK, what evidence do you have to call Jacobs a liar?

  134. Where did I call Jacobs a liar?

I used quotes around the word lies in reference to those who are saying he is lying.

  135. We should all take a step back and think about what can be done that is in the best interest of Auburn. Bashing the people involved is pointless. Finding a new head coach has to be a priority and it needs to happen as quickly as possible.

Hopefully, if this was Tuberville's decision, he can influence some of the recruits that have already jumped ship to come back in the fold. The only way that can happen is for them to quickly find a replacement.

If things are as Jay said and they weren't planning on firing Tuberville, then getting a replacement may not be as quick of a process as we would like.

If we are going after an experienced top notch coach, it will likely be after the bowls before a new coach is named. That would seriously hurt recruiting and if that fell through we could end up shopping through leftovers.

This needs to be handled quickly, but not so quickly that we take someone that isn't a long term solution for Auburn.

  136. Ah, okay RK. I misunderstood. I just think it best to try to look for the positives in this.

One of the positives is that we may get an offensive minded HC, which would be a significant change. If Rhoads will hang around for the defense, a top notch offensively minded coach might get us headed in the right direction.

  137. What are the odds of gaining the interest of a guy like Chris Petersen at Boise State?
