Malzahn and Chizik speak, 12/29
Hey everyone. I am here inside the bowels of Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum, where new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn will make his first public comments as an Auburn employee.
I'll be live blogging the event. It begins at 5:30 p.m. CST.
GENE CHIZIK SPEAKS
GUS MALZAHN SPEAKS
THAT'S A WRAP
I'll be live blogging the event. It begins at 5:30 p.m. CST.
GENE CHIZIK SPEAKS
- "The hires have to be part of your plan. One of the guys I was very adamant about was Gus. It was really neat how the plan unfold exactly the ways the steps were ordered."
- "He's a guy who can relate to players. He can take a group of players, evaluate those players and get them in a position to win."
- "Philosophically, we had to be on the same page for what I feel like is important for Auburn. In this league ... we've got to start with the running game. That's very important to me. As Gus and I talked through this process, it was clear that I had the right guy in all ways."
- "As this process unfolded, I was extremely excited about Gus Malzahn."
- "Over the course of the past two years, I've had a chance to watch Tulsa on film. There was no previous relationship between Gus and myself. I can speak semi-intelligently about him because I've seen him on tape so many times."
- Will Malzahn pick assistants?: "We're going to be on the same page about that. I want the transition for Gus ... to be as comfortable as can be. You can't strong-arm guys in there."
- "What's more important to me is finding the right fit now. Does that mean someone who is more familiar with the system? I'm going for the right fit. There is no timeline. Gus will be in on every facet."
- "When you hire great people, you let them do their thing. I will havea working knowledge of everything. I don't want to micro-manage. That's why you hire great people. With Gus, I know what I'm getting. I've done the homework. I feel good about Gus running the offense."
- On Antonio Coleman and Sen'Derrick Marks: "We've had some conversations. At the end of the day, they have to do the best thing for them. We'd love to have them back."
- Need more coaches named immediately?: "What you can't let happen is letting the urgency override you getting the right fit. If I could, I'd have them all here already. That's not realistic. I'm not putting a timeline. I've got to get the right guy."
GUS MALZAHN SPEAKS
- "A lot of people categorize me as a spread team. We're going to be smash-mouth. We're going to throw the ball vertically down the field. We're going to do that quite often."
- "That's what I did today -- spent time evaluating our strengths."
- "I'm also working on recruiting to fill our needs. We started looking at film, assessing things, assessing our needs."
- On the season at Arkansas: "I got a chance to see the actual speed of the SEC. That's very important when you're out looking for players."
- On Ziemba and Burns: "I recruited both of them at Arkansas." He talked with Burns today.
- Will this be like Tulsa?: "You'll see a lot of similarities. We'll assess our strengths, see what we have here. You'll see the same philosophies, same pace, same play-action."
- Play calling?: "Well, you got to be balanced, and you've got to take what the defense gives you. People tell me, hey, do you want to run more than throw? Really, it matters on what the defense is going to give you. Obviously, like I said earlier, you've got to be able to run the football. We are a run-play action team. You won't see a whole lot of straight drop-back pass. It's just not who we're going to be. We're going to run downhill. We're going to have a physical, hard-nosed approach. I'm not talking about just the offensive line and just the backs. I'm talking about the receivers and quarterbacks, and I think that's very important to establish that early."
- "This situation was ideal for me. This is one of those dream fits for me personally. It's a chance to coach in the SEC. There are certain places you go away from and say: That's an awesome place. We actually won that game. It was a classy place. I knew it was something special. Anytime you hear anything about Auburn, it's positive. That's part of it."
- Does Auburn have talent?: "There definitely are some strengths. It's early. I've been on this for only about 8 hours now."
- When did you hear from Auburn initially?: "Just before Christmas."
- How long did that decision take?: "About an hour."
- What are your plans?: He's assessing Auburn recruits tonight, back to Tulsa tomorrow and will stick with them until the bowl.
- On Tony Franklin: "I've never met him. I don't know much about (his system)."
- "I'll be explaining everything we'll do. We'll have a good, sound plan. We'll have extremely high goals. We're going to achieve them and achieve them quickly."
- On Burns: "I know a lot about him. I know his family well. We know each other well. I really think he's got a lot of potential."
- He said it's important to be in on the "front" of a coaching change and not have to meld into an existing staff.
THAT'S A WRAP

Repost from the last thread.
Ok. How many schools in the SEC are running "the spread" as the primary offensive playbook?
(I realize there are many versions.)
HABOTN = best AU coverage on the planet
Any sites carrying the Press Con live?
Jay- will there be more people at the press conference for the new OC or for the basketball game? Too close to call?
Jay - Are you wearing a tie?
The bowels of Beard-Eaves? Be careful that you don't get pooped out mid-press conference.
sensible i just logged on for the press conference so i am new to the conversation, but "the spread" is a formation in which the offense players are spread out from sideline to sideline... it is not an offense
Of course I'm wearing a tie!
Ran into the Chiziks' and Malzahns' real-estate agent earlier. He's a nice guy. He was personally invited by Kristi Malzahn. Not many people can say that.
Has anyone found live video
that's what bothers me about radio people saying chizik said we were going to be physical and then hired someone that runs "the spread" as if the spread formation is limited to certain amount of plays. You can do whatever you want out of the spread formation and malzahn brought the wildcat formation how much more physical can you get?
It is my opinion that Kristi Malzahn is fun, good people. It is also my opinion that they are good parents. It is also my opinion that Coach Malzahn is HAWT.
Jay, I love that you wear a tie. You always look better than anyone else there. It's much more a reflection on the Hotties than on The Advertiser.
It's an offensive coordinator.
No live feeds or TV. I am taping this ...
Thanks for your support, Monica.
I like ties.
not that it matters, but is he as tall as the photo implies? clearly he's head and shoulders above the camera angle!
Jay G.
Is the man... where else can you get instant access to the presser....
"We're going to be smash-mouth. We're going to throw the ball vertically down the field. We're going to do that quite often."
-G Malz
I like the sound of that.
Jay,
Is he going to have input on the offensive staff???
Or is it already set?
JayGT-
You are incredible!!! Thanks so much for the live press conf. reporting.
AuMob,
Are you going to be at Ladd on Tuesday? I feel like I may wander over and watch it after work?
Ron,
Thank you i have told soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many peeps that several times (Esp. Bammer's)on here and elsewhere but they still try to say it's an offense...
Can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink!
"When you hire great people, you let them do their thing. I will havea working knowledge of everything. I don't want to micro-manage."
I hope that doesn't apply to the defense.
"Anytime you hear anything about Auburn, it's positive. That's part of it."
At least we know he doesn't listen to Finebaum.
yeah Mobilz, the world wide leader is brain washing people, lucky for me i am wearing a tin foil helmet.
Chiz and Gus ... make ... too ... much ...sense ... must ... stop.
Looks like Rodney and fam are having dinner at Rainforest Cafe ... I will be disguised in a gorilla suit, grunting in a low voice, "We want you, Rodney. Come home, Rodney. We love you, Rodney."
tigercowboy,
I just might go check out our new O.C.and shake his hand and welcome him to Auburn on behalf of the
H.A.B.O.T.N.!!!!
I was thinking about doing the same thing??? I am curious if CC will make a visit. We need to make as much headway as we can in the MOB...
Jet,
As a side note "Gorilla Glue" works well if you want to glue him down and ship him back to AUBURN!!!
i am may have to attend the GMAC bowl myself the last time i went was the greatest bowl game ever... Byron Leftwhich vs. David Garrard
I know you can not hear it enough but great job Jay....and I am not speaking of JJ for the record.
Mobilz ...
I want him to think it was his idea ... and if it doesn't work, then we'll try something more ... felonious.
Guys,
anybody got a feed listing of the Men's basketball game tonight for live video?
We need linky.
My favorite was going to see big Ben. I took my son so we could watch him warm up before the game and I will say he was awesome.
Ron,
I was at that game when the o line carried Leftwitch down the field after a pass play cuz he couldn't walk
New picture added.
they look like brothers
They're too hawt not to win!
aunmobile,
is the gmac bowl tomorow nite or wednesday?
the gmac is january 5th.
Wow JayGT amazing work...better than actually being there since I get to sit by the fire and not in the bowels.
Thanks!
WDE
i thought the GMAC bowl was after new years?
next tueday, gotcha
GMAC is the 6th next Tuesday.....
GMAC Bowl is Jan. 6.
Monica- girlcrush on Malzahn
jet - mancrush on Garner
I just might have to drive down to mobile and see tulsa's offense in person.
Is his book better than Tony Franklin's?
It's not just a mancrush ... it's a quest to bring Rodney home.
It's what we want ... imagine me as the athletic director ... then again, don't
Mine is a girl crush.
No shame in my game.
:-)
This must be a good hire because it's got the bammers hatin big time over on tidefans.com
Monica ... it's time to break out the old 45rpm by Evelyn "Champagne" King ... "Shame!"
I'll admit that I thought Malzahn was a little too much of a rinky-dink high-school offense and I didn't want him. But, maybe I didn't know all there was to know about his offense. Everything I have heard the past couple days that describes his offense is completely different from what my perceptions were. Maybe I was wrong, he certainly talks the part.
I love the idea of a run first, play-action style offense. I've been begging for that for a few years.
I am still cautious on any optimism... after the lemon we were sold last year. But, there is some optimism for the first time now.
Any rumblings on who he will try to bring in to be part of the staff?

This is your offical welcome to the HABOTN
sweet. appreciate the work, jgt.
I don't know that one, Jet. I'll have to Youtube it.
You bet they are hating it...They want us to roll in the mire like they did...I don't see it happening. I am believing what my man is selling....If he hits another homerun in the DC (Rodney the GMan) then you will hear the bitching and moaning.
Great work as always JGT
tigercowboy- bama fears Garner coming home. And we'll have jet and turbo-prop to thank.
Thanks Monica....I have enjoyed finding this HOT spot. Great info and mostly insightful conversation...and not to much crazy bama trash...I am wiping a tear from my eye, right now as I type.
just an aside, but the miami dolphins went from worst to first after saban left.
Thanks Monica and everyone for the welcome.
I've read lots of Auburn blogs but have never participated, mostly out of the frustration from the prior coaching staff....just hate being mediocre..lol.
Too damned excited about the future to not participate now and think this is by far the best Auburn blog of the bunch or HABOTN (good name there)!
WDE
What are they twins?
This should bode well for recruiting. He is a good coach.
It's hard to get excited after what happened with Franklin last year. He could be a bust, or he could be up for head coaching jobs in two years, only one way to find out.
The good thing is that the expectations won't be as high as they were for Franklin. I think the Chick-Fil-A bowl got everyone's hopes up, I know it did mine.
Mmmm Chick-Fil-A sounds reallly good right now.
I am just excited to have an OC that I feel can actually prepare a scheme. That is what I liked about Petrino when he was hear. I thought Al did a good job early on with scheming.
I know Gus can be creative which is a plus. Anybody else remember the "Hide the Dwarf Play" he ran to score against us.....Thats what I want...FUN and Excitement and dare I say POINTS>>>>>>
thanks monica. I've been viewing this blog for a while and finally decided to start posting.
Anyone have any ideas about who the next DC is going to be?
nice avatar, barkley.
the next dc must have sec experience and a z in his name. that should limit the search.
Thanks Monica.
No, Jay does not know who the next DC will be.
*This is a recording. Had this been an actual coaching announcement you would have seen a JGT post on the blog.
Mark - are you new to posting on the HABOTN? If so WELCOME.
Go Utes! Andre's absence gives us hope.
LOL Barkley I just got your avatar. Love it.
GO UTES!
Was hoping Chiz would bring back the blue Auburn hat....oh well.
Jay I think Matthews from auburnsports.com has picked up on your idea doing PC's live on his board.
Barkley,
I can see why people would be gun shy about a "spread" offense. Auburn people have a paradigm for "spread" and that is Tony Franklin. Malz's offense is not Tony's and he won't have to deal with a BBQ sorority to get his job done.
scottatl, the all orange stuff killed me. noone looks good in orange (witness Texas, Tennessee). the blue must come back.
sft,
buy me this jacket next year for xmas
http://images.dawgsports.com/images/admin/AU_jacket_Pat_Dye_with_cap.jpg
Monica:
Nope, been here and on the list. Just not much since the end of the season and the change.
I bet Lane Kiffin's wife looks just fine in orange. ;)
Good point, Kody. No BBQ boys is a good thing.
My friends in Arkansas (I worked enough there to have to pay state income tax) are in mourning over Malzahn's coming to Auburn. They think Kodi has had no coaching and is about to break out.
But. they don't think their A logo and uniforms look like Bama's, so they can err.
Not only was it orange, but the vast majority of Auburn "gear" that people were/are wearing wasn't Auburn orange.
I've read some posts from Arkansas fans on other boards saying that they wanted him as their HC before they got Petrino. Lots of praise from the Hog fans.
Never heard of Auburn Orange, all about Auburn Blue
I'm hoping for a "Back to Blue" push myself...hated the all orange thing.
Sorry about that Mark.
I liked the visual statement "All Orange" made in stands at home and away.
Scott,
Auburn orange is dark, not neon like Florida's orange. I agree though. The last time I checked it goes "kick 'em in the butt big blue."
Kody,
yeah i agree, the orange on our uniforms (the stripes on the pants, shoulders and helmets) is solid, but it should just be an accent to the blue on the gear....i never understood why the gear that was put out did not match the orange on our unis...most of the stuff I see is hideous.
I'm working on video right now.
Good point Monica...no reason we couldn't have a "blue out" though
I'm old school. Stick with the blue. The orange fad should go the way of "Welcome to the Jungle"
They can institute an "All Chartreuse" law for all I care as long as we win.
Come now Monica - when you get older there is a limit to evrything. I get Vertigo watching Boise State play home games.
New slogan ...
AU Football 2009: We be Blue Ballin'
Although Ole Miss did have a "Blue Out" when they played AU this yr.
Ron:
It is obvious from your first post that you were listening to the talking heads on NSP in Mobile. That midwesterner-turned instant bama fan upon arriving in Mobile Seth Harp seemed to have a big problem with Chizik saying we were going to be a smash mouth team and then hiring a spread guy. As usual, he opened his piehole without doing his homework. Predictably, they also broke out the "inferior" level of opponent talent card on Malzhan's success at Tulsa. These same type of people also said Meyer's spread would never work in the SEC. As if Auburn fans needed another reason to love this hire, the bama ran media in this state is already tearing the guy down. Fear tends to do that. By the way, hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.
On a different note, I saw "Toro the Bull" last week. Someone must be slipping him some roids the way he has beefed up.
Jay put the video up.
Reminder to self, don't get too giddy, don't get too excited, it's December, there are still 8months before next kickoff, remain calm, breath, don't .... get ....
Nope not workin at all - I'm getting hyped about everything these guys are sellin'!!!!
It's nice to have an OC that looks like he didn't just roll out from under a boat in someone's yard.
Truly there is something about the look of our coaching staff. The three of them look like they could go out tomorrow and play in a game. There's something to be said about looking like a coach, too, isn't there? For some reason I think the DC is going to look like one of the WWF guys, or a certain coach at UGA.
Jay, what was your impression of Gus in person? Is this offense really going to work?
Jay, thanks for the coverage of the presser. I have been lurking for months in the shadows of just "reading comments" but I continue to be impressed with your coverage, content and journalist integrity. Kudos to you sir!!!
Kris -
I kid you not, this is how I heard about the Malzahn hire this morning on NSP:
"Well, I think we're finding out that Les Miles really sucks as a head coach. He's not half as good as Nick Saban. Speaking of Nick Saban, doesn't Gene Chizik really look like a moron for saying he's going to run Smashmouth run-first football, but then he hires Gus Malzahn to run the offense? What an idiot. Nick Saban would never do that. Y'know, I had a chance to interview Nick Saban once, and he simultaneously helped me walk again and healed my scorching case of herpes. In fact, I was talking to the guys at the bar the other day and told them that Nick Saban brews some of the best IPA in the region, but you can't get it on the market, because he only bottles it during recruiting dead periods. That reminds me, we all know Gene Chizik doesn't stand a chance in hell against Nick Saban in head-to-head recruiting."
You get the idea. I think they have a daily quota on mentioning his name.
The spread...in Auburn...again?! It's so crazy it just might work. Especially since we now have the chance for everyone to be on the same page. Time to bring the pain on the Plains! WDE!
Jay, you've done a great job here. HABOTN is my first and only stop for AU news. You done good my man!
True that, weagle. The only reason I was listening to that garbage this afternoon is on Mondays they generally have Brian Matthews as a guest (no substitute for Jay G., but in Mobile you take what you can get for Auburn news on the radio). That Seth Harp guy really gets under my skin. He encourages Auburn people to call in and "defend" Auburn's recent hires and once they do, he proceeds to ridicule them on the radio. You can get away with that if you are Howard Stern, but when you are just some ding dong from out of town you risk alienating what few listeners you have left. I will encourage you to do as many of my fellow Auburn alumns in the Mobile market have done: stop listening to that radio station until they develop some unbiased Auburn coverage. They haven't had that since they ran Mcready for not being "pro bama enough".
Saw Gus and Chiz in the scholly hospitality room at the b-ball game. They were shaking babies and kissing hands...or something like that.
Chizik = alot smaller than he looks in pics, vertically and muscularly
Malzahn = taller and more "gelled up" than I thought he'd be
They were working the room and saying all of the right things the right people (AKA old people w/ deep pockets)
PS....my sister (AU fan) used to work at WNSP. The manager, Kenny, used to call any employee who was also an AU fan a "boogar".
Last year WNSP was hosting a special event with UAT repeat offender DJ, whatever that thug WR's name was last yr, signing autographs. I showed up an tried to get him to sign a shirt w/ last yrs' UAT/ ULM score on it. I barely escaped with my life....totally worth it.
Kody said...

+100 cocktails to you sir!
This comment made me laugh long and hard, something that's been difficult to do lately regarding all things AU-coaching related.
