The Official Statement from Auburn
Gene Chizik, a former Auburn defensive coordinator and current
head coach at Iowa State, has been named the head football coach at
Auburn University, Athletics Director Jay Jacobs announced Saturday.
Chizik, who helped Auburn and Texas to consecutive undefeated seasons
in 2004 and 2005, will be formally introduced as Auburn’s 26th head
coach at a press conference Monday.
Chizik, a 23-year coaching veteran, was Auburn’s defensive
coordinator from 2002-04, where he helped guide the Tigers to a 13-0
season in 2004 while earning the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s
top assistant coach. He also served as the assistant head coach and
co-defensive coordinator at Texas from 2005-06 where he helped the
Longhorns to a perfect season and national championship in 2005.
“I’m extremely proud and excited to have Gene returning to Auburn
to take over as head football coach of this program,” Jacobs said.
“I know that we have found the right fit for Auburn. Gene’s body
of work during his 23 years in this profession is remarkable. He has a
strong knowledge of this athletics program, this university and the
community, and he knows how to be successful in the Southeastern
Conference. He is a high-energy coach that is an outstanding motivator
and demands a tough, physical style of football. I’m confident that
Gene can build upon the foundation that has been established and make
this a program that competes for championships on a consistent
basis.”
During his tenure at Auburn, Chizik’s 2004 defense led the nation in
scoring defense (11.3 ppg) and was fifth nationally in total defense,
allowing just 277.6 yards a contest. In three years at Auburn, Chizik
helped the Tigers to a 30-9 mark including an 18-6 Southeastern
Conference record. In 2003, Auburn’s defense was fifth nationally in
total defense.
In two seasons in Austin, the Longhorns were 22-3 with Chizik. At one
point, he was a part of 29 consecutive victories, which began in 2003 at
Auburn and ended in 2006 at Texas.
Chizik’s reputation as an outstanding teacher is evident by the fact
that he tutored a remarkable three consecutive Thorpe Award winners,
starting with Auburn’s Carlos Rogers in 2004, followed by Texas’
Michael Huff and Aaron Ross in 2005 and 2006.
“Through my travels in coaching over the last 23 years, there’s one
place that I’ve always wanted to return to and that is Auburn,”
Chizik said. “The tradition of the Auburn football program combined
with the passionate fans and their love for Auburn are second to none.
My family and I are Auburn through and through, and look forward to
being part of the Auburn family and community.”
“I am dedicated to working tirelessly to win championships,” Chizik
said. “We will not be outworked in any facet of the building process.
I’m excited to get on the recruiting trail, meeting with the current
players and reconnecting with past players. We want to develop young
men into champions not only on the playing field, but in the classroom
and in the community.”
During his two seasons at Iowa State, the 46-year old Chizik was in the
midst of a rebuilding process, directing the Cyclones to a 5-19 mark.
The Iowa State administration rewarded Chizik’s leadership and vision
for the program by offering him a two-year contract extension following
this season.
Chizik’s first win came against intrastate rival Iowa in 2007, making
him the first Cyclone coach since 1907 to beat the Hawkeyes in his
inaugural season. The 2007 season also included conference wins over
Kansas State and bowl-bound Colorado.
Prior to his arrival at Auburn, Chizik was the defensive coordinator
for four seasons (1998-01) at Central Florida, where he improved a unit
that was 81st nationally in total defense before his arrival to one that
was 16th in the country in 2001.
Chizik spent six seasons at Stephen F. Austin from 1992-97, overseeing
the linebackers (1992-94) and secondary (1995-97). While at Stephen F.
Austin, Chizik helped the Lumberjacks to back-to-back NCAA Division I-AA
playoffs, including a national semifinal appearance in 1995.
He began his coaching career as defensive coordinator (1986-88) at
Seminole High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., before becoming a graduate
assistant at Clemson for a pair of 10-win teams in 1988-89. Chizik’s
first full-time college coaching position came at Middle Tennessee
State, where he helped lead the Blue Raiders to NCAA Division I-AA
playoffs in both of his seasons (1990-91) and to a conference
championship in 1990.
Chizik earned his B.A. degree in education from Florida in 1985 and his
M.A. in guidance and counseling from Clemson in 1991. A Clearwater,
Fla., native, Chizik and his wife, Jonna, have identical twin daughters,
Landry Grace and Kennedy Danielle, and son, Cally.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT GENE CHIZIK
Carlos Rogers, Washington Redskins, Former Auburn All-American, 2004
Thorpe Award Winner
“This was the best decision Auburn could have made. Coach Chizik was
like a dad to me. From a player and student point of view he’s exactly
what Auburn needs in a head coach.”
Carnell Williams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Former Auburn All-American
Running Back
“Coach Chizik is a players’ coach. Even though he was on the
defensive side of the ball, he taught all of us the importance of hard
work. He’s the kind of coach recruits hope to get to play for, and I
think this is a great hire. I’m excited for Auburn.”
Dontarrious Thomas, Minnesota Vikings, Former Auburn linebacker
“Gene Chizik will make a great addition for Auburn. He knows the game
of football and knows how to motivate and relate to young athletes. He
knows how to motivate them to be successful not only on the field but in
the classroom and in the game of life. He will be a blessing for the
players and for Auburn University."

I remember one hire that had fans/booster/alum faxing and emailing like crazy to the AD.
Bammer hired Mike DuBose instead of Frank Beamer.
Yes!
Boarderline Bammish stuff here.
dang thought yall would be posting faster...
i shouldn't have watched the clip. i almost feel sorry for JJ, if only he wasn't so weak. it is almost like the season hasn't ended yet...the loses keep piling up.
"chizzed" I love it!!!
Holy crap Monnie
"Why does it amtter if JJ is tough?"
Now he's so weak.
But yeah, he's a poon.
Denny, I moved to Arizona in the Fall of 93 and gave my IB93 tix to some friends. Prior to the internet, there were few CFB fans in Arizona. I worked 80 hours/wk while there and just didn't keep up w/AU closely. I moved back in 1997, and was embarassed and struck numb in 1998. I resolved to stay more current after that.
I think the heckler did rattle JJ. I think it was good in a way. People need to realize that the bourgeois can't just make decisons that affect the proletariates out there without something being said.
Workers of the World Unite.
in english denny..
Give me some staff options.
At the end of the day about 80% of Auburn fans are mad and since we probably wont be good this year and next....if does not look good...(lack of t.v games, 70k in the stadium, questionable recruiting classes)....if we would have hired someone like Gill, there would have been alot more patience...with this guy nobody will have any
that heckler was shameful. I am more ashamed of that than I am anything.
JJ looks like he's had a rough week.
i agree 150% JD
We've all had a tough week.
Guys, this is what people should have looked at when we appointed Jay Jacobs to hire the next football coach. I think this is everything equivalent to a John Pawlowski hire.
doesn't look like Monday will be much better.
Good night, all
It's nearly midnight here and I will turn into a pumpkin.
Speaking of which, any chance we go back to Big Blue? I am not fond of orange.
i'm flying to dallas tomorrow and slap TO around - he's on my last dang nerve
But he's gone just 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State -- including a 2-10 mark in 2008. The Cyclones went winless in Big 12 play this season, and their win total has dipped in each of the past three seasons.
Chizik's defense regressed in every major statistical category this season. The Cyclones worsened from 65th to 111th nationally in total defense, 93rd to 110th in scoring defense, 44th to 95th in rushing defense and 91st to 115th in total defense.
Their struggles were particularly apparent in the Big 12 game, which has become one of the nation's highest-scoring conferences in the last several seasons. The Cyclones allowed at least 28 points in every conference game this season and at least 422 yards of total offense. Iowa State also had allowed 28 points in 14 of 16 conference games under Chizik.
AUmom, the orange should stay. Blue looked aweful against Tennessee.
if espn is liking this hire,i bet that means at least 2-3 tv games, more expoure, etc
WAR DAMN CHIZZLE!!!!
WOOO HOOO
doesn't look like Monday will be much better.
How is he viewed as a recruiter.
Been out for a while. Just got back. I'm still completely dumbstruck by this. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?
Can anyone give me some positives on this?
I haven't read all the afternoons posts, so if the positive have already been discussed (are there any?) then a quick summary would be great.
who is the recruit that said he's coming back since we hired chizik?
SFC,
Tubbs issues werent a one year blip. We were last in the SEC for the last two seasons and he was given an opportunity to right the ship. He didnt. Time to go. How many chances do you give a guy to correct mistakes? And at what cost?
And scottinatl is dead on. I cant think of any coach ever getting a better job after LOSING 10 straight games.
The bourgeois in the marxist thought were the controllers of production. The proletariat were those that just had their services to barter with. The petite bourgeois were those members of the working class who thought they were bourgeois, but really had just been coopted by the controllers of production, in other words, the ruling class. Marx use the term lumpen Proletariat to describe what we would recognize as bammer fans. Lumpen proletariats were called by Marx as the 'refuse of all classes,' including 'swindlers, confidence tricksters, brothel-keepers, rag-and-bone merchants, beggars, and other flotsam of society.'
Probably the one that couldn't find a ride anywhere else Monica.
My wife (who is not into football) is making me get of the cpu...she thinks i am losing it and she is probably right
I just answered my own question.
I know you guys aren't big star guys so Chizik might fit in.
2008 class
5 star = 0
4 star = 0
3 star = 8
That's out of 25.
denny = english please
Call it a night Hotties. It's been a very long day. Hopefully things will look better in the morning.
alright, final bit of whining is over for me. I am going to follow a paraphrase of Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment. Instead of 'Thou shalt not speak ill of any republican in public' I am now going to say that beginning now, I shalt not speak ill of any Auburn man or women in public. Jeno is now an Auburn man. Jay Jacobs as always been an Auburn man. I wish them all Godspeed in their endeavor to make Auburn better than how they found it.
JJ's face made me think of the old SNL fake commercial - Opps, I crapped my pants.
Night Kathy.
I think it's supposed to be kind of chizzy tomorrow. Not really all that much better.
Wow denny nice..I still don't know what the hell you are saying but nice all the same..
gnight kathy - don't think i can stay awake much longer either
Dax Dellinbach likes the hire...
Denny.....I was good with the Jeno moniker until I just read where Barkley used Chizzle. I'm thinkin' Chizzle works better on the HABOTN.
Just watched the heckle vid. The students really do not need to protest again, it's not fair to CGC and is low class.
Uh, who?
monica- CB david conner
Okay, could someone give me the heckle link so I don't have to search for it?
Thanks
Jeno is easier to type than chizzle, well now having typed it, it is not that bad. Getting to the z key is tougher, but I seem to be able to type it fairly quickly. Jeno, chizzle. Jeno for me.
nite denny and Kathy and whoever else didn't take a nap today
I think Jeno or Chizzle is going to come in and start making the rubber chicken circuit to start energizing the base. He knows the deal and he knows that he needs to get to work, like yesterday.
jeno, chzzle...jeno fo sho
Good night All. It will all be better in the morning. Just wait and see.
I can't even spell it right..I got chizzed *chizzle
cotton - thank you

Two things:
1) Kirk Herbstreit said it was a great hire. He even said it with a straight face.
2) If Chizik was able to convince Jacobs & the PTB he is the right man for the job despite having a 5-19 record, a 10 game losing streak, & zero conference wins he should be able to sell some kids on coming to Auburn while out on the recruiting trail. He may even be able to sell ice to Eskimos.
Nonetheless, I'm still skeptically optimistic.
i'm done - goodnight
Night hottties.
It's Great to be an Auburn Tiger.
Night Monica
Thanks for the link
Goodnight Mon..due to my nap I'll be around a little longer...WAR EAGLE
think i may hit the hay too. night yall
So, about that video. I don't just love this hire, but come on, show some class.
I hope we don't see a lot more of that. That's embarrassing.
whats up with the recruits?
cotton? lutezenwhatsa?
Gene Chizik? Really? It is gonna take that one a while to set in. Really?
I still hate the hire and hate everything to do with Auburn trustees, president & AD. This move sucks so bad. You can count on one thing at Auburn, and that is the good ole boy system. So get ready for an Auburn roster of assistants. I'll bet we win no championships under this regime. I hope everybody quits buying season tickets and contributing money to Tigers Unlimited. SCREW JJ / GOGUE / LOWDER and RANE.
I hear you Eddie. I hate it, too. I hope Chizik is the most successful coach ever, in spite of the administration. Not because I support this decision today, I don't. Chizik's not a bad guy, IMO. They have set him up for failure, big time.
Eddie, it sounds like you are saying screw Auburn.
whoa eddie AU is more than a damn coach..stay with it man..geez WAR EAGLE
The guy in this video making the noise in the background is a great example of a classless fan.

Let the fair weather fans jump ship. I won't begin to predict what Auburn will do next season until I see the coaching staff we put together.
This comment has been removed by the author.
It's surreal looking at these Auburn sites and seeing Chizzle's face all over them. It's tough, but I'm trying to be more accepting of all of this.
What's frustrating is knowing that we could have gotten a guy (Gill) that would have made a huge splash. They talked about Chizik for about a minute and a half on Sportscenter tonight. If Gill was hired they would have had all kind of analysts talking about it, probably an OTL episode, and the spotlight would be on us next year. Instead, it's going to be tough for Auburn fans to get excited, much less the national media.
It really makes you wonder what problems we have at Auburn that the fans don't know about. You have to think Jay Jacobs had some clue that the fans would be disappointed in this. Surely he has to know if the fans are divided, or united in disapproval, the recruits are going to be hesitant to get on board.
I was critical of Tuberville, and I still think he was out of gas. But witnessing a hire like this makes you really appreciate what he did for Auburn. It feels like it's been decades since we held that 6 game streak over bama.
First, Gill will not be the head coach at Auburn, so get over it.
Second, it is more important that the head coach fit the vision of where the athletic department wants to head rather than giving fans some warm fuzzy.
Third, I don't see why fans that supported Muschamp wouldn't love Chizik. He was more successful at Auburn and at Texas than Muschamp.
Fourth, You don't like what happened at Iowa State? Think a minute. Fans tend to have the simplistic view that a HC determines whether a football team wins or loses. That is not the case. A HC creates a situation that allows players and coaches to succeed. Chizik hadn't had enough time to get his players at Iowa State and he certainly hadn't been able to stabalize a staff. Fans need to get over it. Bashing him for coaching someone else's players a couple of years doesn't make sense.
I have been studying up on Chizik and some views of what the plans may be at Auburn. So far, I see potential. A lot will be determined by the hires he makes on the offensive staff.
Fifth, why wasn't Gill a good choice? He didn't have a top notch coaching staff to bring with him. He hasn't had an outstanding season as a head coach. He doesn't have ties to Auburn and would be less likely to bring in people loyal to Auburn.
Sixth, I believe that we may see something different with Chizik. Tuberville brought in coaches loyal to Tuberville. Chizik may be going to bring in coaches that are loyal to Auburn, which is much more important to me. We could end the coordinator carousel we had under Tuberville.
Seventh, I think Pat Dye likely had a lot to do with this decision. He definitely disliked Bowden and wasn't crazy about Tuberville. I believe he wants to see Auburn get back to running Auburn football. And yes, Dye is close to Lowder, which may not be a bad thing. View Lowder how you like, but he wants what is best for Auburn.
War Eagle!!!
It's probably important to give the fans that warm fuzzy feeling since they buy the tickets, and the outlook that the fans have effects recruiting. Just a thought. I'm out.
When you don't have that "BlueBlood" coach out there to hire I do believe you have to at least consider your fanbase. I believe if Coach Gill/Muschamp had came to Auburn and won 5 games next season...the fans would tend to be a little more patient...but a non popular candidate like Coach Chizik wins only 5 games and the fans will be still in an outrage and would be calling for his termination within a year. Again, when you don't have that proven name...you need to buy yourself some time to build the program. Coach Chizik walks off the plane already on the "Hot Seat" as far as the fans are concerned...Not fair...but i believe true.
Fair weather fans that believe they can better judge who is the best coach for Auburn than the experts and are able to make decisions will little knowledge of the situation need to move on. They are detrimental to Auburn. If this causes them to do so, it is what is best for Auburn.
Fans were not in on the interview process. Fans are willing to settle for an 8 win coach such as Gil. Fans aren't the ones to make these decisions.
I am not saying that I know better than any other fan. I am saying judge by results rather than some man crush fans have over some specific candidate. On paper Chizik looks better than Muschamp. Whether the fans recognize it or not isn't relavent.
Anyone been able to get any leaks on possible staff hires???
AUant, I have seen some guesses, mainly former Auburn coaches or players. I have also seen it suggested that Borges may be back as the OC. Apparently Borges had already interviewed for the OC position at Iowa State.
Here is one list I saw:
Mike Pelton – DL (Iowa State)
Jeff Koonz – DB (Iowa State)
James Willis – LB (Auburn)
Stacy Searles – OL (Georgia)
Travis Pearson – DFO (Iowa State)
I also have heard that Pat Dye may have been very involved with this hire, which is certainly possible.
I would like names like Rodney Garner to show up and possibly Patrick Nix and Dameyune Craig.
The choice of a staff will be the first big indication of how good of a hire Chizik will be.
I have also seen Shayne Wasden from Troy mentioned.
With Chizik being the best DC we have had in recent memory, I find it less important that we try to hold onto Rhoads, although it still might not be a bad idea.
From the previous staff, the only guy I might be interested in would be Gran. I liked Nall, but as quickly as he packed his bags, I think he would have attitude issues. I am not sure if the same could be said of Gran. Dunn might also be a good choice.
What about Tracy Rocker?
If they are going to go with former Auburn coaches and players, there is some benefit in it, but it could turn into a mess if there isn't chemistry between the coaches.
I like the idea of Auburn people being hired because they are more likely to hang around for a while, but I don't want us to be talking about someone having to be one of Dye's boys to be considered.
These decisions will be very interesting.
Steve / Wartiger- I'm not saying screw Auburn, I'm saying screw everything that is bad about Auburn, and that's several of the trustees and all their puppets. Sorry guys. that is the way I feel. My brother was roaming the sidelines of the Iowa State / Colorado game this year and trust me, Chizik was forced to make staff changes just to save his job. Who does that sound like? THE ONLY REASON THAT CHIZIK GOT THE JOB IS BECAUSE HE AGREED TO BRING BACK ALL OF DYE'S FAVORITE ASSISTANT COACHES. Chizik is no more than a puppet, just like every darn thing about Auburn. Auburn has been taken over by goons. I only want to free Auburn of the goons. I am in no means a "fair weather" fan and I considered myself a little bit more educated than most (I was on the team during the last coaching search). Look, I am Auburn thru and thru. Anybody that knows me will agree. Like I said yesterday, the hiring of Chizik is a low point for me as an Auburn fan and a person that loves Auburn University. If you can tell me another way to get to these scumbags that run Auburn than by stop sending them money, then let me know, because I will do it.
Not even being in Disney World makes me feel good about this hire. I hope we win, but at the same time, if we fall flat on our face, it would not shock me. Do you think Alabama / LSU / GEORGIA / FLORIDA, heck go all the way down the list until you get to Vandy or Mississippi State are concerned about our move?
And the guy making the scene at the airport is only reacting the way that MOST Auburn fan's are reacting today. Like I said, I was in Disney World yesterday, and I had my Auburn sweatshirt and hat on, and every comment I got from Auburn fans were pretty much disgust. Chizik is going to start out on a short leash at Auburn. HE BETTER WIN FAST AND OFTEN, or else he will be railed against by the fans. You are only at the tip of the ice burg with fan reaction to this hire...it could get a lot worse from this point on. I will never be boisturous like the fan at the airport, but I don't condemn him either or call him classless. Auburn just better be glad the press conference is not a public event, or that could be really embarrasing.
Did JayG. really call him "Chiznik" in the title of today's main Advertiser article, or is it just an internet snafu:
http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=SPORTS
Good morning Hotties,
I had the worst dream last night... Auburn had vowed to go out and hire the best coach available, but instead we hired Gene Chizik.
Wait... AAAAAARRRRrrrrgggghhh!
It wasn't a dream!!!!!

Eddie
I agree with you 150%.
Greg said the same thing to me last night. They hired a puppet who knows how things are run around there.
One of Jay G.'s first responses to this news last night was that it's "indefensible" and I think that describes it perfectly.
I wish I was a million dollar Tigers Unlimited contributor so that my withholding would be noticed.
Here's the positive side of Chizik:
Great DC
did a great job of developing athletes
Has recruited in the southeast and Texas and has good relationships with plenty of key high school coaches
Here's the negative side of Chizik:
5-19 record at Iowa State; Iowa State isn't any easy job, but it sure isn't Buffalo
These quotes from our recruits:
"I don't know him," said Franklin County safety Jamie Collins, an Auburn commitment who played for Mississippi on Saturday. "I've never talked to him — I've never even heard of him."
Told that Chizik amassed a 5-19 record in two seasons as the head coach at Iowa State, Collins paused.
"That ain't attractive," he said.
"I don't really know him, and that makes it a lot more difficult to say I'm going to sign with him," Travis said. "It's hard."
-Randy Kennedy, Press-Register
Ultimately, we'll know if he's a good coach based on the OC and DC he hires. good OC + good DC + good Talent = good W/L record
I want to hear JJ tell us WHY this was the best hire for Auburn. I'd also like to hear what Turner Gill has to say about it. Then I'd like to hear what Gill REALLY thinks about it.
Josh Moon - Do you really think race was what kept us from offering it to Gill? If so why did they even interview him?
i just woke up and apparently the Gene Chizik thing did happen.
going to drown myself in a pot of dark roast coffee now. then back for another day of weeping and nashing of teeth.
Great! AU just got a little more bad press. OTL is about minority coaches & they brought up AU hiring Chizik.
Monica, I would like to hear JJ's reasoning too, but it will be 100% BS.
Herbstreit looks like he's got a major bromance going on with Chizik.
That might be the only positive endorsement we hear for a while.
easy reading
http://iowastate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=889020
Great - Auburn sets itself up as the perfect platform for the discussion of race and head coaching positions. I'm so proud.
that wasn't very easy reading scottatl.
had to choke that down. you think the folks in Iowa aren't doing the happy dance today? embarrassing.
just listen to Herbstreit. he'll make you feel better. it's GREAT hire for Auburn. trust him. ;)
Just Win - did you just hear that?
Mark Schlabach said that when CTT was forced to resign two weeks ago and talk of Turner Gill started, two SEC coaches told him (Schlabach) that Gill would never be hired because his wife is white.
Hear what? Sorry, are you referring to OTL?
Yep, OTL
Schlabach and those SEC coaches are full of crap re: Gill's wife. WHO CARES!?!
We hired James Willis, didn't we?
We're keeping him on the staff, aren't we?
Yep, I heard that. It still amazes me in 2008, almost 2009, that is this a topic of dicussion.
Here are my thoughts. Who cares about his wife, what does the color of her skin got to do with his coaching ability? I wouldn't care if she was purple as long as CTG could come into Auburn and do a good job.
Tar - The fact that the discussion is happening is part of the point.
You explain to me how a 5-19 Chizik is a better hire than Turner Gill.
So I get up see that the news is out and it's just as bad (if not worse) as it was last night. -sigh-
I am so torn about what to on renewing my season tickets. The only voice I have is the money I contribute.
One question I keep is asking is, AU hired a search firm for this?
Should have been "what to do" instead of "what to on". It's still early
Hey but good morning and Merry Christmas HOTTIES! What is it 11 days or something...
Mon-
It would be easier for me to explain how drinking battery acid is healthier than drinking water.
I am still in a state of shock.
I thought it might make sense to me today, but no.
Fair enough Eddie...I don't have any way of defending AU in this case..and the only way to be heard is the dollar...
Morning folks. At least the sun did come out today. I have to admit, I didn't sleep too well. Can't believe I'm letting something that is totally out of my control upset me so much. I'm going to try and get over it before tomorrow morning when I have to face all those Bama fans at the office. Definitely need to add some more music to my iPod!
Wow I found the actual transcript of Chiziks and Jacobs conversation;
JJ:Whaaaazuuuup
GC:Whaaaaazuuuuuup
JJ:Haa that never gets old, I
guess you know why I'm here.
GC:I assume your plane was out of gas.
JJ:No I got Bobby's gas card, Man we want you as our coach.
GC:Well I guess with this record I should go back to coaching defense, why not I'll be your D.C.
JJ:No man Head Coach
GC:Dude are you high?
Unidentified voice in background:Dude....busted
JJ:Speaking of....are those peanut M&M's on your desk? What were we talking about?
GC:UHHH bout the head coaching thing, Yes where do I sign.
JJ:Awesome...Is there a White Castle near here?
Hey but Steve has a defense. I still got a bad taste in my mouth but those are some good points.
this hiring took a lot of chizpah! war eagle.
I think someone chizzed in my coffee this morning...
I am pissed off and extremely disappointed in this hire. If I was the one who bought our season tickets, I would protest by not renewing them. I really wanted AU to hire Turner Gill because, I felt, from the list of candidates they interviewed, he was the best person for the job. But, it's not about that. It's about who the good ol' boys want.
I'm disappointed because I'ved lived in AL for 10 years and in my 30 years prior growing up and living in PA, I never experienced racism they way I have since I've been down here. It disgusts and saddens me. I watched OTL this morning and actually cried when Schlabach said Gill would never be hired because his wife is white. The color of your skin and who you are married to should NEVER be an issue - esp. in the 21st century.
Well, this post is already way too long, so I'll close for now. WDE anyway!
If we were back in the '90s, we'd have one of those AU slogans.
I suggest "AU, crap!"
Obama's my president now. I didn't vote for him, but I'm pulling for him.
Chizik's my coach now. I didn't expect it, but I'm pulling for him.
Gene Chizik will meet with his new team -- the Auburn Tigers -- for the first time at 8 o'clock tonight after flying in from Iowa.
The university president is referring all questions about this hire to the AD? WHT?
Auburn Mafia has got to go.
Dye has got to go.
President is passing the buck!
I'm still trying to get over the fact that he left Auburn right before signing day for Texas. He divorced Auburn for another, and now we want to remarry him?
somewhere yesterday there was a blog headline where Chizik called the AU job a "dream job."
I told a friend this and he said, "it's his dream job, and we are having a nightmare."
Good post LuvAU. I'm right there with you. My disgust over the racism of this decision is what I can't shake. It's WAY past time for "the south" to grow the hell up.
Please do not tell me that Gill Turner wasn't hired because he has a white wife. That is the most pathetic statement I have heard. It is almost 2009. I hate that the media is going to link us to this racism.
So since some dude said it was racist on TV, then you all believe it? Lighten up people. No one knows what really happened.
Just read your comments LovAU. Agree with all except the season tickets. I will continue to support Auburn and our football players. I don't like the good ole boy network, but I LOVE my Auburn Tigers. I'm just glad I have until 3/1/09 to renew. It would be hard writing that check this week!
When an African American isnt hired it's racism. When 19 out of our 22 starting position are African American, that's A-ok.
Where's the OTL episode calling for more white players in college football?
I don't need some dude to tell me it was racist. This is what I need:
1. An objective look at the records and experience of Gill and Chizik.
2. To have been born and reared in Alabama for 30 years.
3. A brain.
When I see my university stuck in the 1950's I won't lighten up about it. I say some need to take it a little more seriously.
My only concern with Turner Gill was that Nebraska would be calling him home soon. He probably would have gotten fed up with the BS among the Auburn good old boy network and moved on to greener pastures. His HC record looked more impressive than Chizik, but that's water under the bridge now. It's a done deal, and I will support our new coach. He is a great defensive coach, and we know defense wins championships!
I hate the fact that just because Turner Gill was passed up for the head coaching job the obvious answer is race. I think that gives JJ and the mafia too much credit. I don't think that they were smart enough figure out that he was not white and his wife is. I really think that JJ and the mafia didn't even meet his wife.
I dont think it was a racist move, I think it was a dumb move not hiring Gill, but not racist.
No one here was in the interview so we dont know what happened. Maybe TPTB were looking for a puppet (as has been mentioned before on here) and Gill wasnt willing to hire AU's selected staff.
Can we demand a refund from the firm that conducted this search?
``So what do President Jay Gogue, who wasn't at Auburn during Chizik's stellar tenure as defensive coordinator there, and AD Jay Jacobs, who was, see in the man?
``They see hunger. Passion. Work ethic. They see things too many important Auburn people didn't see in Tommy Tuberville in recent years.
``In short, in Chizik, they see a young Pat Dye.'
Pat Dye needs to go fishing and keep his nose out of Auburn's business.
Maybe gill saw what he was getting into and said no thanks.
There are a hundred reasons that could've lead to Gill not being hired. Race is definitely ONE of them. I dont think weeping while watching OTL is the proper reaction when you dont know the whole story, but that's just me.
They will call AU racist now or they would call AU racist in 2-3 years if Gill had been hired, performed poorly and been fired, like Notre Dame with Ty Willingham.
OK. I'm ready to hire the rest of this staff and get out and talk to recruits. I want to see passion and fire!
He said he would not be outworked. Well the rest of the coaches in the SEC have a huge head start, so he best be getting to it.
And is Auburn incapable of hiring a coach that is not represented by Jimmy Sexton? My goodness.
And is Auburn incapable of hiring a coach that is not represented by Jimmy Sexton? My goodness.
This will probably be my only post today. I can not tolerate the negativity. I to was extremely surprised by the hire but I am an Auburn Fan through and through. We know, despite his record at ISU that CGC can coach defense. We have not even given him the benefit of the doubt to see what great coaches he brings in to help put together a winning team. We can all debate, whine or even celebrate this hire but in the end we must accept it. I was a huge fan of CTG but as someone already pointed out Auburn was not his dream job. We would have been his stepping stone. At least with CGC, Auburn is his dream job and we do not have to worry about him putting his heart into it. I hope after the new wears off of this hire the Hotties will do what they do best and support Auburn and CGC. War Eagle!!! Have a great day (sorry that it is over 8 lines Mon, glad you had fun at the party)
Great post, Mrs! I can read more than 8 lines when I'm drinking coffee. ;-)
Greg has given me his cold, so I'm taking some drugs and crashing.
Later hotties.
Husband having back problems for over a week. Hasn't been able to walk all weekend. His doctor is a quack, so we are off to the ER. Later Hotties. War Eagle! Hope everyone feels better soon.
Ok, My Gene Chizik hangover is over.
I am still unhappy, but like many have said its done, nothing else we can do. Its been decided. We need to regroup. All we can do is pray he hires a great staff and jumps on the recruiting trail.
Gene Chizik raved about by ex-players. He is a great defensive coach. Coached three Jim Thorpt award winners, was def. coordinator on 2 great teams, Auburn and Texas.
At this point we all know his record at Iowa State was terrible. He should not have taken that job.
He loves Auburn, knows the school, the SEC and the recruiting territory, that is very important.
I dont think Auburn was racist, move on thats silly. Auburn and the PTB hired a guy they knew and they trusted. Someone who knows the school. I can understand that.
Chizik is a good guy it seems. I know he is walking into a firestorm it wont be easy for him here. Lots of pressure after Tubbs tenure. We stil have talent on the team and a decent amount of recruits still left.
Heres to Chizik. I am behind you know. Why? well all in all I am an Auburn fan, always have been. Its what being a fan is about. We all wont agree. Thats what is great about this world and country. WDE and have a happy Sunday.
pdwt, I think that's the best thing for you to do.
ISU was a terminal situation for any coach. His record there shouldn't be the litmus test on his ability.
Still, for you 5-19'ers out there, I understand your skepticism ...
I was hopin i could pump sunshine after a good nights sleep but it ain't happenin. Oh, and i'd rather be called racist after firing a coach of color from not perfoming than perpetuate the lunacy that is racism, which is what we've done. Mr. Gill obviously displayed the kind of character and leadership our BOT didn't like in our last coach,so they probably didn't really consider him. Maybe tomorrow i'll feel better bout the hire and the guy at the airport being a bad fan but the only thing i regret right now about that guy is that he didn't have a 5 gallon bucket of veggie leftovers to throw at JJ muppet show style.
Jay,
I guess the next thing you will be covering is tommorows press conference, then the staff formation.
I applaud your work. You have been what journalism should still be about, which I respect. No innuendos or running with rumours. I respected you would only print the proven facts.
Good work and I will tune in later to see what is the latest.
Thanks, pdwt.
Mon...I don't think that it was racism. It was PTB ego. I think that the PTB hired someone that they can control. This article in the Sporting News nails it for me. The article suggests that no one else(including Gill)would accept.
http://today.sportingnews.com/sportingnewstoday/20081214/?pg=9&pm=1
JayG,
I will say this with all the understandable skepticism showing through, AU has been very good the last 26 years in picking an AU football coach. Even Bowden brought us an undefeated season.
the only ? I have is Chizik, had NO success at Iowa St. Even Dye at East Carolina, Wyoming and CTT had quick turnarounds at the schools they coached. Gill had success at Buffalo.
I just don't know (and why I question this hire) how CGC showed he can HC a winning successful program on the scale of AU.
