Muschamp says he's staying at Texas
Hey everyone. Will Muschamp issued a statement through U. Texas this morning.
Game. Set. Match.
"I have not interviewed for any jobs. I'm not interested in any jobs. I'm happy here, my family loves Austin and I'm going to be at Texas."
Game. Set. Match.

Ok well guess you can't believe the media...
So how pissed off did he leave auburn to turn down more than double his current salary?
Can't wait for Fox 10 Mobile's retraction.
That's on TV, JD.
Newspapers weren't reporting that.
Well gill and patterson aren't looking too bad at this point...
Jay you crack me up.
The newspaper in panama city reported skip holtz so I hope you can't trust the papers either!
Ok, so far we have hired Spurrier, Muschamp, and Holtz. Have I missed anyone?
OMG will Auburn just get a coach!
Damn.
TV people have no cred. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story..
"I'm not going to be the coach at Alabama." - Nick Saban
Just sayin'.
Unfortunately, you can't trust what anybody says -- that's one of the things I hate about this whole process. "I am not going to be the coach at...," says the guy right before he signs the contract at said school.
But, that being said, I don't think WM is coming to Auburn...
Repost from last thread:
Laz-That was a tracker of JJ's plane?! I'd be ok with spurrier as a 3-4 year band-aid. Who knows might be greatness..
"Carry me out in a pine box"
also just sayin'
im not sure whose plane it is. a friend emailed me that link. not calling him a credible source or anything, but someone is flying from Auburn to Columbia.
Bryan and Wartiger took the word right out of my mouth.
s
Kirk:
I'm also flying from Gadsden to Auburn later today. Could I be a candidate? ;-)
I'm fixin to put my Gill 09 badge back on...
Anytime I see a TV station reporting we have a coach I'm just going to mark whoever it is off the list. That's terrible, someone should be held accountable for this stuff.
I have read several statements like this from Muschamp. He told Auburn Undercover the same thing. There is always the chance he pulls a Saban, but very unlikely. Texas is a top notch job.
Undercover is also reporting that Spurrier and Johnson are still in the mix, although reports of Spurrier getting an offer are bogus.
Apparently Johnson has re-appeared as a candidate. If this is the case, maybe it is because Muschamp is out of the picture.
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/gill-confirms-job-interviews/3093592974/?icid=VIDLRVSPR01
That guy is good...
glad to see i didn't miss anything while i was at the gym. geewizz.
So, we've got a pretty solid staff put together so far...
Steve Spurrier
Will Muschamp
AND
Skip Holtz
Sounds like a winning program to me!
Damn!!
No BOOM! Oh well Next!
If I remember correctly, didn't some other coach issue a statement a few years ago saying, "I will NOT be the coach of the University of Alabama" just a few days before becoming the head Coach at the University of Alabama???
Wasn't there some other Coach that said he'd only leave Ole Miss "in a pine box", then left the next day on a jet for Auburn???
I take Muschamp at his word though. Don't ask me why...
NEXT...

Still wondering how and why Q was on that plan yesterday?
Just like a bad disco song, I cant get "Q" out of my head!!!!
Wow!
That should be plane - not plan - sorry!
Although it sounds as if Q is part of the "planmakers"!
If someone like Paul Johnson or Jim Grobe said this I'd believe it.
Anyone with Jimmy Sexton as an agent, not so much.
At least it's a little more definitive than "I concur."
that's a nice staff there Rainman.
I hereby challenge patdyeswildturkey to Bourbon Bowl '09.
Struttinduck, I am really not that surprised Q would be there. I am sure they want several peoples opinion of the candidate and Q's knowledge of Auburn football is probably as good as anyone's.
I am officialy no longer obsessed. I will be supportive from this day forward...
Gill is great
Spurrier is splendious
Patterson is perfect
Dooley is dominant (didn't want to say darling)
Hoke is no joke
Nix is nuts
Garner is groovy
That quote from Muschamp seems pretty dang conclusive. Regardless, I still take any report with a grain of salt, none of these coaches or administrators can be trusted. For instance, Nick Saban on Dec. 21, 2006, about two weeks before he was hired said this:
"I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach. ... I don't control what people say. I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here."
Who are our best guesses as leading candidates? I was shocked that Chizik got an interview. I hope he isn't a consideration. My wag at the moment is the leading candidates are: Patterson, Johnson, and Grobe.
Kelly may be a possibility, although I haven't seen anything indicating it.
Petrino could also end up in the mix, although I consider it unlikely.
Spurrier may be a fallback. Gil is also probably in the fallback category.
I don't think Fisher as very likely.
Skip Holtz might be a possibility, but I have a hard time seeing Auburn hiring a senator's son.
Still a Dye hard auburn fan if they go that way
Holtz will give em jolts (that was tough)
Keen for kelly
This coaching search is like crack..
I'm addicted to HABOTN
I'm starting to lean towards Gill now.
I have assumed Muschamp all the way, with a slight chance of Petrino or Fisher, because as Jay-G has mentioned more than once, that's the way AU rolls.
However, if we are truly looking for a high-profile type hire, Gill is our best choice (especially since I don't believe the Spurrier stuff).
Chillin with chizik
Jumpin for johnson
Prayin for petrino
Feelin some fisher
Grobe is gravy
Any other candidates I haven't named?
From the other thread......go Jay! Now you have taken over the Roundtable and given some credence to this radio program also!
Yeah WEG, I am really liking the show today.
My guess with Spurrier is he is in the second tier along with Gill.
Gill hasn't had a long enough history as a head coach or a season with more than 8 wins. What is impressive about him is he turned the armpit of college football into a winner.
Why don't we see Bobby Johnson on the list? If I were to guess at someone who could come out of nowhere, he would be the guy.
FSJ ...we all are addicted! All sports radio programs now need Jay for a serious discussion. They know the HABOTN is the only real in the know blog!
I'm swamped at work and trying to find a coach. If I put my bank info and bills on Facebook willl someone make sure my bills get paid?
I love the George W Bush thingie.
I think Muschamp's statement is pretty conclusive and with regard to comparing his statement to Saban's, I think the key difference is that I believe Saban said that while still having a game left in the NFL season to coach. Muschamp's season is basically over. It's doubtful they would wait till after the bowl game to make an announcement. I can't think why he would make such a definitive statement and not mean it. If he had made a less convincing one like Fisher, sure, but I just don't see it happening.
We just got a shout out!!!!
Jay,
On his national radio show, Dan Patrick stated "I called my source at Auburn and he stated that Muschamp had a deal done on Wednesday but then it started to come apart because he didn't want to report to the AD, Muschamp wanted to report to the President of the University."
What do you think?
Is that our JD?
Is that biscuit?
great minds
Josh is smoking the wacky weed today.
Okay, it is official. I am starting my own private bandwagon and am hoping for Bobby Johnson.
Great minds, faker? Did you just admit an auburn fan could have a great mind? What is this blog doing to you? ;-)
Whose next?
What...no one reppin' w/me?
I can neither confirm or deny that zoo keeper.
Spurrier........does that mean we all have to get visors now?
Well yall maybe reppin on the roundtable. Since I can not hear it in the "dirty" south of al I will require posted updates of what hotties appear and what they bring. Or you could just make yuo wild and lavish stories about what goes down on the rt and post those.
I agree with Josh Moon's assessment of Gill vs. Grobe.
Hey Monica, can you give a cliffs notes of that analysis?
Ok, this is really getting ridiculous. JJ is treating this like a job fair. Auburn has become a laughing stock around the rest of the country. They shouldn't have fired TT until they have someone else in place. The person that should have been fired is JJ!! >:(
I do agree that Grobe is closer to what Tuberville use to be. Many fans seem to think Auburn doesn't have talent. I disagree with that. I think we have done a poor job of using our offensive talent.
Gil is definitely a person who would be a bigger in terms of exciting fans, but I am not sure how well he would do handling the pressure at Auburn. He would be going from a low pressure situation with low expectations to a program that now expects to regularly contend for the SEC West.
LuvAU1968, this hasn't become ridiculous yet, but if there isn't a coach named by the end of next week, it will be. We have been fortunate so far to have not been turned down like what happened to another school last season around this time.
Holy crap I just learned a trick on my blackberry that will make navigating habotn much easier! I'm back baby!
Oh, comparing fan base size. Auburn is the larger school with more students. That would say that Bama has a higher percentage of sidewalk fans.
Actually, SFC Alabama has more students over the past couple of years I believe.
Steve,
Maybe not yet, but it's pretty close. I just want them to make a freakin' decision!
Cliff's Notes: Gill is, indeed, a good recruiter and would be a better hire than Grobe. Gill is not a "2nd tier" hire.
Alabama has now got a larger freshman and sophomore class than auburn does. Also a larger student body.
FSJ, that would be a surprise, but you could be correct.
Monica, Gill was definitely rated as one of the top recruiters in the nation while at Nebraska. That is encouraging.
Awwww....Phred is apathetic and dejected.
Honk if you have interviewed to be Auburn's next coach.
Hi, Monica. It's Cheryl. I had to come up with a new identity so my family's blog wasn't out there for the world to see. :)
ESPN reporting that Patterson is not interested.
Devasted. Crushed. Obliterated. Decimated. Boom. boom. Out go my lights.
Wake me up when we have a coach.
Holy Guacamoli. It is hard for black athletes to get into Auburn? So, the real question should be if drug tests should be required before calling into a radio show?
What happened SFC?
Some guy called into the roundtable suggesting that Auburn has trouble recruiting because black athletes have trouble meeting the higher entrance standards. What a load of crap.
My life is complete. I heard Jay G beat box on the radio.
BRO, you've got some mad skillz
He also mentioned that Auburn doesn't have a large black student population that would encourage black athletes to come to Auburn. What a load of crap.
I know, Jim. That was amazing! Who knew?
Yeah i just muted the show when that dude started talking. Figured it was gonna be baaad news...
This comment has been removed by the author.
SFC-
That dude was waaaay out on a limb
SFC it was probably a bammer
Oh please WEG....
;-)
I don't know who the guy was, but let it be known. If you are a racist, you shouldn't be a fan of major college football. Go root for BYU maybe.
God bless all the athletes that have put their heart and soul into Auburn football. I don't give a rip what race they happen to be.
Longtime reader but new to posting. THANKS for the info Jay I appreciate it. Is there a real time chatroom?
Lemme tell ya
Alan, we have real time chat at chatroll occasionally. You will occasionally see notices for campfires, which are live chats.
I must warn you Alan...
This blog and these "chats' are addictive.
They suck you in and won't let you out...
Good Stuff.
As for a black coach, I don't care the color of the coach either. I don't believe in having a mandatory interview of a minority because I find it insulting to minorities to be interviewed if they don't have a shot. Just hire the best coach. Screw the racist crap.
Agree 100%, Steve!
i agree SFC. the whole race issue bothers me. if you can win football games you're hired. who cares.
Did they just mention my name on 740.....run people like Jim Rome.
Shout out yeaaaah
Alan ...sometimes Jay calls a campfire on Chatroll.com named HABOTN or sometimes people chat regardless
Signup under the same name as here so everyone will know who you are
I refuse to rejoice for any non-Asian American coaching hire. It's time we took a step forward at Auburn.
German porn!!! That is hilarious!
That's not the real Alan.
There's only room for one of us and I bringing the gump with me.
alan, there is also a facebook group..just search HABOTN and Kristina will get you hooked up
German Porn?
WTH?
Mr. Sensible is rollin' on HABOTN radio.
RIGHT.
NOW.
Ill bring Sam Elliott for those who don't approve.
Hmmm tried to log in 5 different ways!! No Porn!! 8-(
Jokin'
I will hook you up....
Kristina, u hookin' peeps up with porn????? wow.
uh....on facebook...NOT german porn.

I hope the guy that felt threatened when commenting to a blog will come back. One of the things I like about HABOTN is people give honest opinions. Sure, some of them are strange, but if you have a Jan Terri avatar, those are accepted also.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Wait...wait...wait...did you say german porn?
I had to look up what avatar meant! LOL
Faker! Deleting your posts and making my sound crazy! Grrrrr
Thanks for the info on the facebook. I am Alan in Bear Creek Alabama. Whoever said HABOTN is addictive is right on.
JD, some dude on the show said it took him a while to find HABOTN because when he googles it, he ended up with German porn.
Hey, Steve...why would anyone feel threatened on HABOTN?
I am not sure. The guy calling into the round table said we jumped all over him. I try to only jump all over regulars.
Okay, I am going to listen to a bit of mindbomb, but it is purely by accident.
I've been reading HABOTN longer than I've been posting. I've been to forums like al.com and Auburn Undercover and this anything but threatening.
Yea, I use to go to al.com and undercover. Al.com forums are a waist of time. Undercover is okay, but I don't like the format that much. I like the honest opinions here. You don't get those everywhere. Flamers here get shot into the great digital oblivion.
Ok Hotties,
Work kept me away from the round table today and I don't have time right now to catch up on all of the comments.
The burning question on my mind is did the hotties represent well?
The guy who said that on 740 goes by the name Cletus on here and when he is on Finebaum. Those in the Gump know him as Donny. He's a funny dude.
James, I actually called into the round table, my first radio appearance ever. Unfortunately I dropped the ball by not giving a HABOTN shout out. Let the beatings begin.
No worries SFC, you got on the air, which is what counts.
Oh well, back to work for me - Mr. Byrne wants a full day out of us now that proration has set in!
I believe JD got some air time too. HABOTN was well represented. We even had a HABOTN newbie chime in, which is very cool.
John Ringer asked earlier about Dan Patrick's reporter from earlier.
That sounds pretty credible to me.
What did Patrick's reporter say?
Jay:
That would seem to indicate that Muschamp did not leave with every bridge intact. I thought you mentioned that everything was smoothed over.
Or was that what the "almost" everyone meant?
Bruce Felder on Finebaum now is saying how top notch coaches are turned off by Auburn due to the BOT and because we drove out a winning coach. When asked how many coaches on a national scale know about the issues at Auburn, he said all of them.
ESPN radio says were making a "hard" run at Pual Johnson now...Jay is the only credible source i have left
I would believe Paul Johnson as a top candidate.
If Spurrier is at the top of our list, something is terribly wrong. Yes, he could be considered as a second choice, but I have to beleive we set our sights at someone that can be around at least 10 years.
Mark: Almost. Yes.
Paul Johnson: Looking into that right now.
Still waitin' for the CTT-haters to name the attainable blueblood savior that is going to fix everything. Haven't heard it yet.
Folks....this was a bad year to replace a coach.
All the names remaining on the "big board" don't compare to CTT. Here's to hoping that the PTB still can pull a rabbit out of the hat. Wonder if the new guy really understands who his real bosses are?
Unlike the CTT complainers, I do believe that we have good young talent on the plains. The 2005 and 2006 recruitng classes were #6 and #9. We had a ton of injuries and had more freshmen/sophomore "starts" than most any team in D1. that usually doesn't help get wins. The "up and comer" that we will probably be forced to accept will have some talent to start with. Can he recruit against CN$?
at this point, why would anyone want to join this circus??
So any conformation if that flight tracker from AUO to colombia was linked to Darth Visor?
I have no reason to believe the flights to and from Columbia, S.C., have anything to do with Steve Spurrier.
I think his comments yesterday were pretty clear.
Plus, Spurrier doesn't make sense. He's in his 60s, he's not known as a good recruiter, his USC teams are barely competitive.
Why?
I know a name that hasn't been mentioned yet.....
wait for it.....
Brother Oliver
Hoopie,
I agree that there really isn't anyone out there that can replace TT.
Besides that, Jay, he's had his time in the sun. It will soon be time for him to hang up the HC visor and replace it with his Augusta National visor.
EVERYONE is replaceable.
I meant that there is noone available right now that is of the same caliber. The ones that are, aren't interested.
Amen ballin.
If he's not replaceable I guess we just shut the program down.
Jeez Hoopie, I was all with you on supporting Tubs before he was fired, but now that's past. Acting like we are doomed because he is gone makes about as much sense as the people who thought we would be doomed if he stayed. Give the next coach a chance, whoever it is.
Well now that Patterson and Bobby Johnson ( I almost just had a german porn typo there) have been mentioned outside the HABOTN, I have nothing left to look forward to. They are now a part of the smokescreen. Is Pat Dye still on the payroll and willing to be an interim coach?
Enjoyed the Roundtable today, I will sleep better knowing the future of Prattville football is safe. My two cents is that right now Turner Gill is the best candidate. I like the fact that he is a former QB, which is where we struggled quite a bit this year.
There are some that could replace Tuberville and might do as good a job such as Patterson or Paul Johnson, but I do think they would be an upgrade and both would be a downgrade in terms of national prominence.
The bottom line here is that there isn't a coach that would significantly better than Tuberville on the list, so there is nothing to compensate for the damage done to Auburn's reputation by firing Tuberville.
On a side not, since Tuberville's nickname was Tubby, would Patterson's nickname be Patty?
Until Someone names a blueblood, I still think that we are in some sort of a starting over situation. Who is the best guy to start over?
I like everything about Gill but don't think that Gill is a viable option because the AU fans won't wait 4+ years for him to build his program.
Looks like we're gonna have to gamble on a Patterson/Hoke type choice.
Luv - Shouldn't be looking for the same caliber. Looking for one that will rise to the top and acheive greatness.
michael, I agree. While I think getting rid of Tuberville didn't make much sense, giving the next guy a chance is what is important now, whether it be a coach I would hire or not. We need to move past this period. Hopefully it will take a year or so and things will smooth out.
TRUE Auburn fans can wait. We understand that it takes a few years to build an excellent program.
I seriously doubt Patterson will happen because he is so similar to Tuberville. If JJ hires him, he will catch a lot of heat.
Jay do you think we have seen all of the "list" names mentioned yet? Is it possible that perhaps maybe there is still someone not mentioned? Im holding out hope for Butch Davis haha
So Hoopie you are saying it would take Gill 4 yrs to build a program and but not patterson/Hoke? Please elaborate.
I want someone that not only can take us to the next level more consistently, but someone that will run a clean program. Not someone that "will do whatever it takes to succeed."
Maybe they turn towards Gill again and go young gun.
Whoever we get next year is gonna win, and win big. Were Auburn, and since I've been alive (1979),Following tough times like this year, Auburn has always come back hard-with a vengeance.
Mark it down folks, its coming. We have people that are way to proud for this not to succeed.
Put that at the top. Its go time.
Syracuse just hired someone besides Gill:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3764790
Maybe Gill will come to Auburn now?
Alan - taking it to the bank right now. I sure hope Sterling has your account numbaaa
My assumption there is that the Patterson/Hoke-type guys have been HCs for a while and have more existing staffs/networks/systems to draw upon than Gill. Gill would need more OJT. I'm actually OK with that, but I'm old fashioned.
Hey Romey....Gill is 45 years old, CTT is 53.
I'm so tired of this search..HIRE GILL! FCS
I have great respect for Jim Grobe and his program at Wake. He will methodically get the most possible out of the players and may be able to develop a program similar to CTT that we could be proud of. Can Jim Grobe recruit enough good players to AU? Will he put up with the meddling?
We might have to be more patient with Gil because he hasn't been the head guy at such a high profile school with such high expectations. He does have experience in the environment though, being at Nebraska.
Yes, there are candidates that would likely do better short term. I think Patterson would be the closest to being the same ole same ole, but that isn't what we are going for, at least I hope not.
Hiring Gil means we are hiring a coach we want to be around 10 years or more, and that is what is best for Auburn in the long run if the fans and BOT are patient.
Hoopie, I think Auburn fans want to be in contention for the SEC every year.
Tuberville wasn't doing that. He fired two coordinators in two years. It was his time to go.
barkley, Tuberville was doing that. We were the third winningest team in the SEC this decade. Now we are unlikely to be there anymore.
Michael..
When CTT got fired, I erroneously assumed that the PTB would at least have a "better" coach waiting to be announced. I quietly waited for the big announcement.
I figgered if we had a blueblood in waiting, then maybe AU could quickly turn it around and balance the scales in this state. Didn't happen. I haven't seen anyone named that can quickly balance the scales. CN$ will get even further ahead of us while the new guy comes in and gets established.
Come on Steve, we've been over and over that so many times already. He wasn't getting it done.
Tuberville appeared in two SEC title games in ten years. Um yeah, can't we do a little bit better than that or am I just asking for wayy too much???
The facts say otherwise.
Tubberville won 85 games in 10 seasons, which is 8.5 wins per season. The first season hurt that average and this last season did too. We are basically saying that being one of the top two teams in the West every season isn't good enough. Over the next few years you will see the alternative.
There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics.
So if we win one SEC Championship we will match CTT's total.
I will say it again. 2 out of 10 years. Are you happy with that?
Remind me, I forgot what kind of trophy goes to the second place team in the west. You're right, Tommy was damn good at finishing second in the west. Glad you were happy with that.
Greg just reminded me that Jim Grobe is from Huntington. It's odd how many coaches are from WV.
Saban
Rich Rod
Holtz
Grobe
Jimbo Fisher
Bob Pruitt
Barkley..If you're right, then we are destined to hire a new coach every 4 years until we hire the right one(see Bama).
This was/is not a good year to hire a coach. Common sense says to wait until the right replacement coach is available, even if it takes a couple of years. That wasn't possible because of the PTB and loud complainers. I think that CTT would have stayed and fought with the PTB, but it's too much upstream swimming to try and recruit against the negative press caused by the complainers. Recruits notice.
Mon..WVa births coaches like Texas and Pennsylvania births QBs.
I agree that we will likely be in the same situation Bama has been in for around 25 years and doing the coaching carousel. I just hope that the Auburn family will be more patient and we can achieve the same type of stability we achieved under Dye and Tuberville.
Man, who would've thought of fans complaining after a 5-7 season. What a bunch of losers, huh?
Never said we should hire a new coach every 4 years. Tubs had 10 years, went to ATL twice. Are you satisfied?
This also reminds me a lot of the Brandon Cox situation. People wanted to blame everything on Cox and think that Burns was the savior. After seeing the Todd/Burns comedy season, many realized that Cox was a good QB. There is a big reason that we looked good in the Peach Bowl and it wasn't Burns. I do expect many to realize what we had with Tuberville in a few season too. It is part of learning and we seem to have to go through this learning process occasionally.
barkley, I was more than satisfied. I was very proud of the type of program we had established. I was very proud that we had the stability that so many programs do not have. I was proud that Auburn had become and example for other programs.
duck season!!
Jay G. gets mentioned on Mindbomb. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, I am not certain.
The guy had 4 or more losses 7 out of his ten years, I don't get your love affair with him. He was a nice guy, an average football coach.
It's over so it doesn't matter. Despite all the people insisting Auburn is now doomed, I think we'll bounce back.
JGT, Finebaum is talking about you again.
What have I done wrong?
He mentioned your article about the JJ mafia arriving at the airport last night.
Barkler...Go look at most any team's records when replacing coaches. Unless we get lucky and hire the right guy, your standards if applied evenly, will start our own AU coaching carosel.
My prediction is that because of the relatively high salary all coaches are paid, coaches are going to progressively stay away from the fanbases with neurotic expectations. The trend has already started. I don't think that Pete Carroll would do any better at AU than CTT did. He can't even go undefeated at USC in the Pac10.
barkley, to refer to Tuberville as an average coach is ridiculous.
To hope to improve Auburn by bringing in an inferior coach is even more so.
I think that is enough on this topic.
rabbit season!
Hoopie, you are not going to get agreement on this. If someone thinks one of the winningest coaches in the SEC, which is the toughest conference in college football, is an average coach, there is no arguing with that logic. Let us see the vast improvement that the new head coach will bring.
Steve, apparently you are satisfied with mediocrity.
You're right, that's enough.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Sadly enough, 44-31 satisfies some people.
Sorry had it wrong
Al Borges: 41-9
CTT: 44-31
barkley, you may want to look up what mediocrity means. I have never said any such thing. Apparently that is what you have chosen, which is what we are about to get.
Those numbers are hilarious. Look at how many of those losses were his first year and this last year. Hilarious.
