Muschamp says he's staying at Texas

Hey everyone. Will Muschamp issued a statement through U. Texas this morning.
"I have not interviewed for any jobs. I'm not interested in any jobs. I'm happy here, my family loves Austin and I'm going to be at Texas."

Game. Set. Match.

Unfortunately, you can't trust what anybody says -- that's one of the things I hate about this whole process. "I am not going to be the coach at...," says the guy right before he signs the contract at said school.

But, that being said, I don't think WM is coming to Auburn...

I have read several statements like this from Muschamp. He told Auburn Undercover the same thing. There is always the chance he pulls a Saban, but very unlikely. Texas is a top notch job.

Undercover is also reporting that Spurrier and Johnson are still in the mix, although reports of Spurrier getting an offer are bogus.

Apparently Johnson has re-appeared as a candidate. If this is the case, maybe it is because Muschamp is out of the picture.

If I remember correctly, didn't some other coach issue a statement a few years ago saying, "I will NOT be the coach of the University of Alabama" just a few days before becoming the head Coach at the University of Alabama???

Wasn't there some other Coach that said he'd only leave Ole Miss "in a pine box", then left the next day on a jet for Auburn???

I take Muschamp at his word though. Don't ask me why...

That quote from Muschamp seems pretty dang conclusive. Regardless, I still take any report with a grain of salt, none of these coaches or administrators can be trusted. For instance, Nick Saban on Dec. 21, 2006, about two weeks before he was hired said this:

"I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach. ... I don't control what people say. I don't control what people put on dot-com or anything else. So I'm just telling you there's no significance, in my opinion, about this, about me, about any interest that I have in anything other than being the coach here."

12:27 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Who are our best guesses as leading candidates? I was shocked that Chizik got an interview. I hope he isn't a consideration. My wag at the moment is the leading candidates are: Patterson, Johnson, and Grobe.

Kelly may be a possibility, although I haven't seen anything indicating it.

Petrino could also end up in the mix, although I consider it unlikely.

Spurrier may be a fallback. Gil is also probably in the fallback category.

I don't think Fisher as very likely.

Skip Holtz might be a possibility, but I have a hard time seeing Auburn hiring a senator's son.

I'm starting to lean towards Gill now.

I have assumed Muschamp all the way, with a slight chance of Petrino or Fisher, because as Jay-G has mentioned more than once, that's the way AU rolls.

However, if we are truly looking for a high-profile type hire, Gill is our best choice (especially since I don't believe the Spurrier stuff).

My guess with Spurrier is he is in the second tier along with Gill.

Gill hasn't had a long enough history as a head coach or a season with more than 8 wins. What is impressive about him is he turned the armpit of college football into a winner.

Why don't we see Bobby Johnson on the list? If I were to guess at someone who could come out of nowhere, he would be the guy.

I think Muschamp's statement is pretty conclusive and with regard to comparing his statement to Saban's, I think the key difference is that I believe Saban said that while still having a game left in the NFL season to coach. Muschamp's season is basically over. It's doubtful they would wait till after the bowl game to make an announcement. I can't think why he would make such a definitive statement and not mean it. If he had made a less convincing one like Fisher, sure, but I just don't see it happening.

Ok, this is really getting ridiculous. JJ is treating this like a job fair. Auburn has become a laughing stock around the rest of the country. They shouldn't have fired TT until they have someone else in place. The person that should have been fired is JJ!! >:(

1:19 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do agree that Grobe is closer to what Tuberville use to be. Many fans seem to think Auburn doesn't have talent. I disagree with that. I think we have done a poor job of using our offensive talent.

Gil is definitely a person who would be a bigger in terms of exciting fans, but I am not sure how well he would do handling the pressure at Auburn. He would be going from a low pressure situation with low expectations to a program that now expects to regularly contend for the SEC West.

1:19 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

LuvAU1968, this hasn't become ridiculous yet, but if there isn't a coach named by the end of next week, it will be. We have been fortunate so far to have not been turned down like what happened to another school last season around this time.

Folks....this was a bad year to replace a coach.

All the names remaining on the "big board" don't compare to CTT. Here's to hoping that the PTB still can pull a rabbit out of the hat. Wonder if the new guy really understands who his real bosses are?

Unlike the CTT complainers, I do believe that we have good young talent on the plains. The 2005 and 2006 recruitng classes were #6 and #9. We had a ton of injuries and had more freshmen/sophomore "starts" than most any team in D1. that usually doesn't help get wins. The "up and comer" that we will probably be forced to accept will have some talent to start with. Can he recruit against CN$?

Well now that Patterson and Bobby Johnson ( I almost just had a german porn typo there) have been mentioned outside the HABOTN, I have nothing left to look forward to. They are now a part of the smokescreen. Is Pat Dye still on the payroll and willing to be an interim coach?

Enjoyed the Roundtable today, I will sleep better knowing the future of Prattville football is safe. My two cents is that right now Turner Gill is the best candidate. I like the fact that he is a former QB, which is where we struggled quite a bit this year.

2:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There are some that could replace Tuberville and might do as good a job such as Patterson or Paul Johnson, but I do think they would be an upgrade and both would be a downgrade in terms of national prominence.

The bottom line here is that there isn't a coach that would significantly better than Tuberville on the list, so there is nothing to compensate for the damage done to Auburn's reputation by firing Tuberville.

On a side not, since Tuberville's nickname was Tubby, would Patterson's nickname be Patty?

2:52 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Until Someone names a blueblood, I still think that we are in some sort of a starting over situation. Who is the best guy to start over?

I like everything about Gill but don't think that Gill is a viable option because the AU fans won't wait 4+ years for him to build his program.

Looks like we're gonna have to gamble on a Patterson/Hoke type choice.

Jay do you think we have seen all of the "list" names mentioned yet? Is it possible that perhaps maybe there is still someone not mentioned? Im holding out hope for Butch Davis haha

So Hoopie you are saying it would take Gill 4 yrs to build a program and but not patterson/Hoke? Please elaborate.

I want someone that not only can take us to the next level more consistently, but someone that will run a clean program. Not someone that "will do whatever it takes to succeed."

Maybe they turn towards Gill again and go young gun.

Whoever we get next year is gonna win, and win big. Were Auburn, and since I've been alive (1979),Following tough times like this year, Auburn has always come back hard-with a vengeance.

Mark it down folks, its coming. We have people that are way to proud for this not to succeed.

Put that at the top. Its go time.

Syracuse just hired someone besides Gill:

Maybe Gill will come to Auburn now?

My assumption there is that the Patterson/Hoke-type guys have been HCs for a while and have more existing staffs/networks/systems to draw upon than Gill. Gill would need more OJT. I'm actually OK with that, but I'm old fashioned.

Hey Romey....Gill is 45 years old, CTT is 53.

I have great respect for Jim Grobe and his program at Wake. He will methodically get the most possible out of the players and may be able to develop a program similar to CTT that we could be proud of. Can Jim Grobe recruit enough good players to AU? Will he put up with the meddling?

3:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

We might have to be more patient with Gil because he hasn't been the head guy at such a high profile school with such high expectations. He does have experience in the environment though, being at Nebraska.

Yes, there are candidates that would likely do better short term. I think Patterson would be the closest to being the same ole same ole, but that isn't what we are going for, at least I hope not.

Hiring Gil means we are hiring a coach we want to be around 10 years or more, and that is what is best for Auburn in the long run if the fans and BOT are patient.

Blogger barkley for governor said...

Hoopie, I think Auburn fans want to be in contention for the SEC every year.

Tuberville wasn't doing that. He fired two coordinators in two years. It was his time to go.

3:29 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

barkley, Tuberville was doing that. We were the third winningest team in the SEC this decade. Now we are unlikely to be there anymore.

Michael..

When CTT got fired, I erroneously assumed that the PTB would at least have a "better" coach waiting to be announced. I quietly waited for the big announcement.

I figgered if we had a blueblood in waiting, then maybe AU could quickly turn it around and balance the scales in this state. Didn't happen. I haven't seen anyone named that can quickly balance the scales. CN$ will get even further ahead of us while the new guy comes in and gets established.

Blogger ballin said...

Come on Steve, we've been over and over that so many times already. He wasn't getting it done.

3:42 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Tuberville appeared in two SEC title games in ten years. Um yeah, can't we do a little bit better than that or am I just asking for wayy too much???

3:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The facts say otherwise.

3:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Tubberville won 85 games in 10 seasons, which is 8.5 wins per season. The first season hurt that average and this last season did too. We are basically saying that being one of the top two teams in the West every season isn't good enough. Over the next few years you will see the alternative.

Blogger ballin said...

There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics.

3:47 PM
Blogger ballin said...

So if we win one SEC Championship we will match CTT's total.

3:48 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

I will say it again. 2 out of 10 years. Are you happy with that?

Remind me, I forgot what kind of trophy goes to the second place team in the west. You're right, Tommy was damn good at finishing second in the west. Glad you were happy with that.

Barkley..If you're right, then we are destined to hire a new coach every 4 years until we hire the right one(see Bama).

This was/is not a good year to hire a coach. Common sense says to wait until the right replacement coach is available, even if it takes a couple of years. That wasn't possible because of the PTB and loud complainers. I think that CTT would have stayed and fought with the PTB, but it's too much upstream swimming to try and recruit against the negative press caused by the complainers. Recruits notice.

I agree that we will likely be in the same situation Bama has been in for around 25 years and doing the coaching carousel. I just hope that the Auburn family will be more patient and we can achieve the same type of stability we achieved under Dye and Tuberville.

3:52 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

Man, who would've thought of fans complaining after a 5-7 season. What a bunch of losers, huh?

Never said we should hire a new coach every 4 years. Tubs had 10 years, went to ATL twice. Are you satisfied?

3:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

This also reminds me a lot of the Brandon Cox situation. People wanted to blame everything on Cox and think that Burns was the savior. After seeing the Todd/Burns comedy season, many realized that Cox was a good QB. There is a big reason that we looked good in the Peach Bowl and it wasn't Burns. I do expect many to realize what we had with Tuberville in a few season too. It is part of learning and we seem to have to go through this learning process occasionally.

3:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

barkley, I was more than satisfied. I was very proud of the type of program we had established. I was very proud that we had the stability that so many programs do not have. I was proud that Auburn had become and example for other programs.

The guy had 4 or more losses 7 out of his ten years, I don't get your love affair with him. He was a nice guy, an average football coach.

It's over so it doesn't matter. Despite all the people insisting Auburn is now doomed, I think we'll bounce back.

Barkler...Go look at most any team's records when replacing coaches. Unless we get lucky and hire the right guy, your standards if applied evenly, will start our own AU coaching carosel.

My prediction is that because of the relatively high salary all coaches are paid, coaches are going to progressively stay away from the fanbases with neurotic expectations. The trend has already started. I don't think that Pete Carroll would do any better at AU than CTT did. He can't even go undefeated at USC in the Pac10.

4:06 PM

barkley, to refer to Tuberville as an average coach is ridiculous.

To hope to improve Auburn by bringing in an inferior coach is even more so.

I think that is enough on this topic.

Hoopie, you are not going to get agreement on this. If someone thinks one of the winningest coaches in the SEC, which is the toughest conference in college football, is an average coach, there is no arguing with that logic. Let us see the vast improvement that the new head coach will bring.
