In all honesty, we get to bitch about this today, but after he's announced, he's our guy. We don't have to agree with the decision, but we do have to get behind the guy we have chosen. Would you rather be UAT fans?

I think I now understand the hiring process. It is based upon a southpart episode.

A "South Park" episode, of all things, has yielded some investing insight. Its underpants gnomes have built a business based on "Phase One: Collect underpants. Phase Three: Profit." Look around your portfolio and you might discover some similar firms missing that critical element: Phase Two.

I do believe we are missing that Phase Two. Just replace "Collect underpants" with "Hire Chizik" and "Profit" with "Win National Championship".

It all makes sense now.

While Gene Chizik isn't my first (or second, third, fourth or fifth) choice to take over at AU, deciding what he can accomplish at AU based on what he's done at Iowa State may not lead to a sound conclusion. AU isn't Iowa State.

I'd much rather have a Turner Gill, Gary Patterson, Chris Peterson or (especially) Paul Johnson. But if Chizik is it, I'll do my best to keep an open mind and give him a chance. He was certainly a hot commodity following his stints as DC at AU and Texas. And if he'd stayed at Texas and was coming in to AU from his spot as DC there with one NC under his belt and another shot at the BCS NC only a defensive stop of Michael Crabtree in the final seconds of the TT game away, how would you feel about him then?

I recall that a great many fans of AU were none too happy to see Chizik leave for Texas. And Tommy Tuberville must have thought a lot of him and also must have had confidence in his ability to recruit, otherwise he would not have brought him in as DC at AU to begin with.

Bottom line: Don't judge Chizik on his record at Iowa State. That would potentially be the same mistake a lot of Bammer fans made with respect to Gene Stallings (27-45-1 as head coach at Texas A&M, 23-34-1 as head coach of the NFL's Cardinals) and we all know how that worked out.

Take a breath. Relax. What will be, will be.

Something tells me that Chizik is the only one that would play ball with the PTB. Did all the others know better than to do so?

I didn't post this during the season b/c it's against my fan morals to do so. It doesn't matter now so here goes: I have heard from 2 completely unrelated folks(starting after 2006,) that CTT repeatedly fought against hidden interferences and unfulfilled promises for improvements. The Duck Hunt was CTT move to try to get what he had been promised. This year more promises were withdrawn.

Go read the national press/opinions: They already think we're nuts for firing CTT. The folks in the know, nationally, will find what happened with this hiring better than we will. How much opinion will they dare to spill?

I think Tony Franklin drugged everyone before he left. Tubs was high and decided that life would be simpler no coaching, so he quit to go home and make a garden. JJ and Googoo were stoned out of their mind and thought giving Tubs 5.2 million was a good idea, weather he quit or not, then everyone got together, got baked, and made the most ridiculous coach search ever, then accidentally hired Chizik because someone told them that he was really Pete Carrol and they couldn't see the difference.

3:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I can't say I am not surprised that Chizik would be the choice, although I can also see why. Fans tend to judge coaches based upon very little information.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Auburn wasn't able to attract a top notch coach after the ways we treated Dye, Bowden, and Tuberville. As Jay mentioned, we don't look good on a national scale to coaches.

This was also very true of Alabama after Bryant. It was assumed that Bama fans would not be content and that coaching careers would turn to caca. Even Stallings wilted under the pressure.

The Auburn family created this situation. It is now up to the Auburn family to make the best of the situation by not bashing our own head coach or athletic director. That simply continues the poor reputation that Auburn has developed.

Wow, it's amazing how nobody can support this decision. This has got to be about as bad a hire as I could possibly imagine. Why interview 10 candidates to get Chizik? Does anyone have any positive thoughts on this?

I've seen 2 people say positive things on this board. Chris and Steve FC. Kudos to them, but man, I just can't get my head around this.

I still don't believe its true.

Alan...I have never heard a rumor that Chizik had anything to do with Jetgate.

Then again...I wasn't staying close then and never asked for those kind of details....interesting and plausible.

If the fans can't get excited about this hire, how are high school seniors suppose to?

I feel like we were just put on probation.

Hey scott, I started reading your post thinking it was going to be a pros/ cons type thing. Then it just ended after the cons... hilarious.

AU Wade, I am POSITIVE that I didn't think Chizik would get this job.

Here is a positive thought: If this is indeed true, don't be surprised if Borges returns as OC (not joking either). At least we will get one of the 12 coaches we are paying not to coach back on the sidelines....

Statement from Iowa State University Athletic Director Jamie Pollard

“Gene (Chizik) confirmed for me today that he is accepting the head coaching position at Auburn. I’m disappointed for our Iowa State fans and student-athletes that he has chosen to leave our program after only two seasons. I understand that it (Auburn) is a dream job for him, but the timing and the way it played out has been hurtful and disappointing. Although this is a significant set back, we will get through the challenge because the Iowa State University athletics program is far greater than one person.”

Looks official to me.
