Things I learned today
Hey everyone. I had a chance to talk with Jay Jacobs and Gene Chizik away from the cameras for a bit after the press conference and gleaned some fairly useful information.
I'll just let it fly.

I'll just let it fly.
- So what about Chizik's staff?: The head coach revealed very little about his plans there. It's going to be him, Joe Whitt Sr., Phillip Lolley and Jimmy Perry on the recruiting trail starting this afternoon. Those three guys have high visibility among Alabama high school coaches and it's clear that Chizik wants to start exerting more influence inside Alabama.
- Cash money: Jacobs again said money will be no object when it comes to hiring assistants. He said that about the head coach, too, so I'd understand your caution. Still, I believe this will be a rich staff of assistants once it's all said and done.
- Pat Dye sighting: He was all over today, which is highly unusual. He was overheard telling someone: "This is the most welcome I've been here in 12 years." I thought that was interesting. He is very pro-Chizik. Why? "He's everything Jay said he was."
- 5-19?: Jacobs said Chizik essentially mortgaged the Cyclones' present to make them better in the future. The team played a lot of true freshmen this season. Jacobs said after confirming that plan with other ISU people, he basically considered Chizik's record irrelevant.
- Barkley's comments: Jacobs didn't want to talk about that. He reiterated his "best fit for Auburn" mantra and moved on to the next question.
- Tuberville staff changes: Someone (thoughtfully) asked Jacobs if Tuberville had been willing to fire people prior to his resignation. "Tommy, two weeks ago, he told me of certain changes he was going to make. And then...you know the story."
- Mo' money: Chizik apparently never asked Jacobs about money. I asked Gene about that and he gave me a stern look before insisting that he "doesn't coach for money." OK. I guess that means he's willing to donate much of his $2 million salary toward feeding the homeless.
- Lookin' out my back door: I was a little troubled (comically) by Jacobs' repeated references to eschewing "back door" negotiations with coaches. Auburn is proud of having handled this search above board, which is commendable, but is it that big of a deal?
- Q on the spot: Jacobs said Quentin Riggins, quite possibly the world's most likable sideline reporter, participated in all interviews. Participated in the decision? Jacobs didn't address that. Did Silvio Dante help make decisions? I remember Tony making the calls.

People, if you read through the criteria Chizik laid out for who Auburn wanted as a head coach, it is very apparent why Gill couldn't come close to competing with Chizik. You can argue that criteria if you like, but the assumption that Gill had the better resume is obviously wrong going by that criteria. Even without that Criteria, Gill's resume at Ball State looked very similar to Chizik's at Iowa State after the first two years.
So, has anyone figured out that Chizik is the head coach yet and that to continue to discuss this is a waste of time?
Dear Binoba,
*standing ovation*
Kind regards,
Monica
I'm having a hard time dealing with this Old South perception that's now covering Auburn, Steve.
I just hope, and I truly hope, that this decision was not made because of skin color. I can't believe that it was.
Steve, Mr. Gill coached at Buffalo, there are things called "intangibles". From watching TG i feel he is someone who his guy will run through a wall for.
Also, i'll discuss what is pertinent to Auburn, please don't try to "big boy" me off my subject matter.
Yes, the interacial marrying law was on the books up until a few years ago; HOWEVER, that did not stop me (white) from marrying my wife (black) in the Opelika court house 16 years ago! Will some people forever look at another person and only see skin color - yes. Is that the everyday norm - no.
Steve- WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT CHIZIK ANYMORE, we are discussing race, which by the way, is being discussed everywhere..nationally, in Atlanta and on WMSP in Montgomery. People get all pissed off at what Barkley said, and I disagree with it.
Chizik is our coach and I'm behind him. This is not the matter we are discussing.
Also Steve, you can mold crap, but I wouldn't suggest it.
It seems that Steve's optimism seems to get under the skin of some.
BinOBA, I don't believe I ever referred to you. Next.
Ok somebody previously reported that the plane was in Perry Ga. Also somebody posted a kid named Johnny Farms was in the area. I looked him up and his a a power house offensive lineman. That would be a big bang if Chiz can turn him away from UNC.
Now if he can turn a couple of Bamer commits that would be electric.
WDE!!!
TB - if that is what's happening, and he's already able to get on the recruitng trail and get some of "his kids" on in the fold, I would have to say THAT is exactly what we need.
Just thinking about it, youknow the Chiz hears everything being said, it wouldn't surprise me if that gives him extra motivation to prove the naysayers very wrong.
Mr. Spock, i don't doubt you, but i work with a fellow chef who is also in an interracial marriage, as i am as well, was denied his marriage license here in baldwin county in bayminette about 8-9 years ago. He went to Pensacola and took care of it, i woulda been so mad i couldn't have seen straight to drive.
As for Barkley, he has been blatantly racist, so I really don't see much benefit in discussing him. When I look at what he said, I don't see anything to indicate that the hiring was based upon race. Barkley even provide evidence that it wasn't based upon race by saying Chizik had the worst resume of anyone.
Hello Charles!!! Think for a little bit. Was everyone on the list black other than Chizik? Duh!!!!
When you look at the criteria Jay laid out it is pretty clear why the hire was made. Now, was it the right hire? We shall see. It appears the looked for someone that loves Auburn, has a history in the area, and wants to play smash mouth football.
You can't really judge everything here because we didn't get all the information on the plan that Chizik laid out for Iowa State or Auburn.
I have also read that Gill bombed one of the questions at the interview about what would happen if Nebraska came calling. This may or may not be true.
Unless they are going to bring in the race cops and do an investigation, this is pretty much a pointless argument.
If you read through the comments I think you understand why, if it is the reason, that schools around the country are hesitant to hire a black coach. It's not because the school is not ready for it, or the administration, or the PTB are not ready for it. It's because the average Joes like you all won't shut up about it. If he gets the job, it's because he's black. If he doesn't get the job, it's because he's black. Etc.
You, the people, decide the outcome in more ways than you think. Let's suppose TG came and was terrible. He's fired. Guess what happens then? Right. We let him go because he was black. Or, we never gave him a fair chance because he was black.
The PTB are smarter than most people give them credit for ... THEY ARE TRYING TO PROTECT AUBURN FROM YOU!
Charles Barkley is not a valid source of anything except how not to gamble and owe millions.
I said I wasn't going to get into this, but I did. If the PTB decided not to take the risk because of race, then they made the right decision. I offer the angst of the last few days as support of my argument. Imagine the angst of more serious trouble down the road, like a losing season. You just think it was hard on CTT. It would be very, very hard on Auburn. Maybe AU wasn't willing to commit suicide over the idea of making a statement.
For the record ... I supported Turner Gill.
By the way, I haven't been in an interracial marriage, although I have dated a black woman and a philipino lady. Dating the black woman was actually more interesting in terms of race. It shocked me when I saw just as much racism from blacks as I did whites.
Charles can cry racism all he wants, the fact of the matter is CGC knows the recruiting scene here FAR better than CTG. If CGC is successful at AU, is he likely to bolt to another job? Probably not...(NFL MAYBE).....If CTG were HC at AU and he enjoyed success, would he bolt for UN - Probably so. (Just a guess, but a bettin' man would take that bet) Yes CTG coached on championship teams at UN - was his coaching a major factor in those championships - I don't know for sure, but I would say probably not. On the other hand, CGC coached killer D's at both AU & UT and his coaching WAS a major factor in the success of BOTH programs.....Yes CTG has a better record as a HC than does CGC - given the circumstances, I don't know that is such a big deal. Given the available/willing candidates it is a no-brainer that Chizik is our HC.....
You started your post with "people", well i'm people.
You referred to TG coaching at ball st, i was kindly correcting you.
Racism is a problem. Right now it is a problem at our beloved AU. It is not a waste of time as you stated in your last paragraph. That is what really made me respond. Sorry , racism or something being unfair to all involved really torques me off. I do think chizik deserves his chance since he's the coach and i'll back him.
Phred, you bring up a very good point and it is why affirmative action has hurt the black community. I have seen the racist remarks from people suggesting anyone that is successful and black is successful because of affirmative action. It is sad that some people choose to believe that.
That being said, I have worked with people from all over the world and as we work together, people learn that people are just people. I won't hate you, because that is something I don't do. I will dislike you, but please give me a better reason than the color of your skin.
quite logically stated, Mr. Spock. I would have expected nothing less.
Is the problem that chizzle's record is 5-19? If he was 12-12 or 13-11 would we have this discussion? Saying Au is racist because gill did not get the job does not make it true. Is the precedent going to be that if you interview a minority coach you must hire him if the records are equal. Why no outrage over gardner? How many minority candidates did TN interview? I think Gill record is better than Kiffin's. Like it or not Jay hired who he thought was right. Maybe this is why schools go through back channels. I don't think the decision was down to gill or chizzle anyway.
Thanx THT - I too was on the Turner Gill band wagon and from a fan perspective - I was enamored. If I were the AD, though.....Who is better to entrust a multi-million dollar a year venture that feeds the every other program on campus? CTG or CGC?
I married a turtle. I had to go to Guam to get the marriage license.
Why was a turtle not considered for this job?
I like you thinking Michael
Must ... avoid ... making ... comment ... don't ... jump ... in ... fray .... don't ... waste ... energy.
Aw, crap. Here goes.
What advantage does TG have over Chizik? One successful season. At an easier place to go worst to first. It's a heck of a lot easier for Buffalo to go basement to penthouse in the MAC than it would ever be for any coach at Iowa State to make that place relevant in the Big 12.
Chiz was not my choice, but to lay down the resumes and say this is a racial thing is knee jerk and way too easy and requires no thought at all.
If TG had any experience in the neighborhood -- SEC school, grew up here, whatever -- I'd be with you. But he doesn't, and I'm not.
Chizik has three things working against him -- he made a bad job choice, he has a fan in Pat Dye, and Jay Jacobs chose him.
The Charles Barkleys of the world will always push the easy button. And the ESPNs and NY Times will also fan the flames because it's easy.
I have dear friends who think we've made a colossal mistake in not hiring Gill. We may have made a mistake, but I don't think that's the mistake.
For now, I'm going to hope and pray that Chiz can do it ... and I'm going to leave the rest of it behind.
Did the turtle have a winning record?
Yeah, i heard gill bombed a question from JJ and company, i heard he couldn't name the original lineup from HEE-HAW . I also heard he called referred to roy clark as roy acuff .That was THE deal breaker from what my sources tell me.
Caution, above post may contain sarcasm.
Try Maryland, I here they are into turtles there!
As for Neil Callaway, I don't know if he will be the new OC, but I can see why he would be considered. How many other former Auburn OCs were involved in 4 SEC championships?
I think we may be in line for some disappointment at the OC spot, at least if you are wanting Auburn to go with a more wide open attack. I do get the impression that Chizik is Pat Dye Jr.
I do hope that I am wrong with this because I think Tuberville was leading us in the right direction with the spread. If you look at the successful teams in the Big 12, it is clear the spread is the offense these days. Heck, if you look at the top 10, it is very apparent. Also, look at the SEC championship game. Bama looked a lot more like Pat Dye football that we did this season. Florida took them out.
Touche Jet!
Mr. Spock,
I will presume that yours was a rhetorical question. If CGC is the correct answer, I would have hired the wrong guy. Of course, I don't know jack about running an athletic dept or hiring people, so take that with a grain of salt.
Wasn't gonna wade in but this is getting ridiculous. Are all you that think racism was a factor, saying that AU is racist. Would it not be better to say they practice "selective racism"? I have not seen a great movement in the last several years to fire Willis, who is a black coach with a white wife, in fact many are upset that he has been let go. Or is this just another case of the BOT not being able to do anything right?
Personally I want a Coach who straightens out our program and wins ... I don't care what color he is or if he is married to a Mongolian snow lizard. Just get AU back where it belongs
michael, where did your turtle coach? Did she/he play college ball? I didn't diss the perspective candidate by referring to them as turtle did i? If a turtle was hired i'd back him/her til they had adequate chance to fail/succeed.
I hope CGC succeeds long enough for us to forget this all happened. I also hope if AU us looking for a BB or any other coach, that race is not a factor, nor is the race of their spouse a factor.
I had a pet turtle named "Floyd." My parents stole him from me in the dead of night and released him into a ditch.
I've never forgiven them for that.
Floyd was committed to a solid ground game.
I still think it proves this was not a racist decision just because they passed over successful white head coaches. The problem is people are trying to rationalize this hire, and it leads them to things like racism. You need to understand that Auburn is not rational, and it will make things a lot easier on you.
Steve- If this was the 1980's I would agree with you, but NC is the worst possible choice as OC. No recruit will be inspired by NC as OC. Ga was glad to get rid of him. He did not even call the plays. Plus we do not need the old bama guard at AU.
"You need to understand that Auburn is not rational, and it will make things a lot easier on you." -- Michael.
There's your new front page quote.
Most cogent thought expressed by anyone in days.
wartiger, I am not fully sold based upon the record of being a good DC. The job of a DC is very different than that of a HC so I can see why some would argue that his record as a DC isn't as important.
What is common between a DC and HC job is recruiting and I think Gill gets the edge there, although Chizik does have a very good reputation too.
WHat is impressive about Chizik's DC record is the 29 game winning streak. You don't win that many games in a row and make a lot of mistakes, so that definitely favors Chizik purely in terms of decision making capability.
THT - Just sayin' that between the two, who is better suited to run the program from which the manna flows to ALL other programs. Short term - who has the contacts in the area RIGHT NOW to shore up recruiting? Who is most likely to stay thus providing long term stability? (Granted this is pure conjecture, but it is not unreasonable to assume that a successful TG would be gone before long)
AUfan, i'm wonderin who is gonna recruit Mobile, willis was great down there from what i hear. Vic Koenning is a name i'm hearin for OC, anyone else?
Mr Spock, I think that is it exactly and you were able to say it in much fewer words than I.
My guess is that you'll have to sort out what roles Rodney and Stacy Searels would have (if they agree to come) before the OC and DC are settled.
I don't see Vic as a likely after his famous "Escalade" quote. Joe Whitt, Sr., is the temporary answer to the Mobile question.
Vulcans don't mince words - Thanks SFC
BinOBA, I have seen Vic Koenning mentioned, although I can't recall where. I jump from site to site and am getting old and forgetful. The name does worry me because I didn't get a good impression from what he did at Clemson.
Chuck Norris doesn't mince words. He minces people.
Folks - were approaching 500 on the thread count - Jay G Tate is a new thread happenin' soon?
Chuck has never been to Vulcan!
Good news for you folks, I've got a meeting and a lunch to go to.
You will be spared my charm, wit, wisdom and overall awesomeness for a while.
Wiz - Enjoy!
BinOBA, I think right now that Whitt will be pretty good in the Mobile area. Haven't heard anything on OC that is verifiable so won't speculate other then to hope it is someone involved in a bowl game
The Escalade quote. Thanks for bringing that up. I knew I was remembering that name for a reason. That Escalade quote was idiotic and good enough for me not to hire the guy.
Back in the old days when that happened, I was on the al.com forum. There were plenty of pseudo-Auburn fans all excited that Bama might get probation again. I told them to not assume it was true because some guy said it until there was come kind of confirmation. Needless to say I was bashed and called a Bammer, which is the level of thinking available to so many on the al.com forum.
Please, no Vic. I don't need an OC that talks to the press. He can be a quiet guy like Rhoads. I just need an OC that is smart enough to know when to shut up.
Ok - here's something to ponder Koening for DC and get the OC that helped get us our other undefeated season. I mean they're both looking for work, right? Mybe get a package deal from Clemson.
Since Bostn Legal got canceled - maybe William Shatner is availble?
KKKAAAHHHHNNN!
Hey, don't kid about Shatner, he could get the team some great deals on the flights and hotels rooms for away games
I would like to come out and publicly say I will discriminate against Terry Bowden based upon his last name. Nobody named Bowden should ever be allowed on campus again.
By the way, I have another theory with regard to discrimination in the hiring of Chizik. I do believe they were discriminating against people with small heads. Chizik was obviously hired because of the size of his noodle, and that is wrong.
I'm so glad I'm not an Iowa State football fan. You wanna talk about misery? They've only won 9 games in a season twice .... in the history of football at Iowa State. No wonder they're taking it a little hard. If Chis is the real deal, I don't know that they would understand how to handle the success.
Hiring "The Shat" has many advantages - Onsold tickets to directional Lousiana schools can be resold on ebay as offical Star Trek collectables -
I went and took in the day the earth stood still, it sucked, but the trailer for the new wolverine movie and the trailer for the new star trek movie were awesome. I'm not a trekkie but i'll be seein the new star trek in the theater for sure.
I don't want vic koenning either. Calloway either. I'd rather go div 2 and find someone who has done well in their playoffs in the past
keanu reeves could make ice cream suck
That's the funniest thing I've read all day, Harrison!
Cobra Commander,
Has Mr. Sensible even posted in this thread?
BinOBA - The new Trek movie look real good - Of course I am partial!
Correct me if I'm wrong -- but I'm not:
Neil Calloway was not offensive coordinator on any of Dye's SEC championship teams. Jack Crowe in '83; and I think Pat Sullivan for the other four. Maybe Tommy Bowden for the last one.
Calloway was an offensive line coach.
This is my last comment on the issue, because it is a dead issue and a PR nightmare, but if Buffalo was such an easy place to turn around a team compared to Iowa State in the Big 12, then why hadn't anybody done it at Buffalo before?
Anybody listening to Cowherd today?? He is raping Auburn over the coals, and now he is bringing up the Lebo hire over Capel. Lebo was the only coaching with a sub 500 record. Anyways, I am and have been arguing the perception of everything.
Time to move on, it's getting steamy in here.
Sullivan for the other three, I meant.
Jkev- I think Callaway was a defacto OC for Richt. Not really an OC, but held the title since Richt was the real OC at the time, but that is still only 2 titles.
Cobra- I hope this in jest.
To be fair Lebo stinks
I have discovered more discrimination at Auburn. My sources tell me that we have never hired an Athletic Directory that use the F word. Is the fair? Nay Nay I say. Sometimes it is appropriate. For instance, when Billy Joe Bob met Jacob at the airport, a good ole FU would have been terribly appropriate. When asked hard questions at press conferences, a good ole F off can come in very handy. People, please stop the descrimination and hire and athletic director who will use the F bomb.
Buffalo Div 1 football for only the past decade. No established history to "turn around". They had abandoned football back in the 70s i think. ISU playing football continuosly since almost forever.
Lebo has done a poor job. However, discrimination in favor of a UNC grad over a Duke grad (capel) is ALWAYS appropriate ;-)
I go back to the listed posted by JayG on the HABOTN site and ask who is the best qualified/fit for AU?
Gene Chizik, Iowa State head coach
Todd Graham, Tulsa head coach
Brady Hoke, Ball State head coach
Derek Dooley, Louisiana Technical Institute head coach
Turner Gill, U. Buffalo head coach
Patrick Nix, U. Miami offensive coordinator (possibly by phone)
Rodney Garner, U. Georgia assistant/recruiting coordinator
And if you don't think "Fit" is important - I have some Tony Franklin System DVD's I'd like to sell you.
Mr. Sensible is great and anyone that says different is a meanie. Sorry for the language Jay, but it had to be said.
Lebo had a far above 500 record when he came to Auburn. He had four straight 20 win seasons at TN Tech and UTC before coming to Auburn.
It hasn't panned out at Auburn, but he was a winning coach who had played under Dean Smith, so it wasn't like it was viewed as a bad hire.
Cobra- Please don't do this. Yes I support Mr. S. I like Mr. S. Most people on here like Mr. S. We also like your gift of lyrics. Please don't do this.
Mr. S is a good guy and you're way out of line, Cobra.
Is Lebo bad for Auburn, or was Auburn bad for Lebo?
Steve- I believe it was bad both ways with Lebo and Auburn. Lebo is a good coach, but this was not the fit for him. I followed him at UTC and he turned their program back around.
Is Auburn the Iowa State of basketball schools?
Lebo lost many of the Ellis kids right off the bat- all the leadership was gone and LEbo was stuck rebuilding, since then he has lost a string or players for various reasons - biggest reasons why we still lose. Question is why has Lebo lost all those players?
For the record, I agree with Steve, I am definitely pro-cursing, and pro-F-word. Until we have a society that is openly-cursing sympathetic, we will never know true bliss. Also, I am beginning to worry about cobra commander. This is supposed to be fun....for entertainmnet purposes only. Smile every now and then, enjoy ya'seffff.
Harrison- I would still say B-ball at Iowa State means more than it does at Auburn. Auburn is more of the Baylor of the Big 12.
I also enjoy the pleasures of cursing.
I may have worded that wrong, but I meant winning basketball games at AU is like winning footbal games at ISU. practically impossible
Lebo could have stayed at UTC and had a Mack McCarthy (for those who know UTC hoops) like run there, he just never fit in at Auburn.
Cobra- The only one heading toward a banning will be you.
His show is good and you know what, he does it because he enjoys it. He doesn't get paid to do it, but it must be easy for you to come on here and trash it. I will never be for people like you. You are way out of line. Go ahead and start a banning campaign for me also.
So far, it seems like Cobra is in the minority about Mr. Sensible. Is Cobra a dictator?
Lebo's ability to rebuild AU's b-ball program are about as good as Chris Todd's ability to throw the deep ball.
Agreed RK. UTC fans were really jilted when he left. Lebo was close to having them dancing again.
Speaking of UTC, when do they play Davidson at home, if it's a weekend, I'm coming to watch.
I missed the petition for making public cursing socially acceptable. I'm all for that. Although, I wonder if making it acceptable would take the fun out of it? Hmmmm....
ummm - Mr Sensible has a show?
Nice comparison Will
You'll have to forgive me - My galactic travels keep me out of the loop.
Yeah and Lebo doesn't have a "bad shoulder" to blame it on either!
Eddie, they lost at Davidson 100-95 over the weekend...
They play them at the arena the last Wednesday in January.
500!
Mr. Spock - I am from and live in MD. Fear the Turtle!!
So what did I miss that someone wants Mr. S banned?
Lebo's "Bad shoulder" is the Auburn basketball program and how litte attention it is shown by the people in power until now with the new arena coming.
Mon- Drinking is still really fun way past the age of 21
Cobra -
They're called women. Try 'em out sometime. Enjoy a conversation with them, take one to a movie, have a lovely dinner. They just might settle ya down a bit. Only a thought though.
Cobra Commander is dumping on Mr. Sensible -
Ok, does somebody have a map? Because I'm officially lost.
Where is JGT when we need him, I can not believe he is letting us go past 500...
So RK - Which came first???
Harrison - Once again, you make an excellent point.
A good way to get people interested in basketball is to quit losing to Mercer. I admit, I have been to every home game this year, and I will keep going because I really want to see b-ball the way it was in the late 90's (except for all of the cheating and stuff). I have heard that Lebo is prob one of the worst recruiters in the SEC. Year in year out he always has some excuse. Too short, too young, too many injuries, players left the team b/c Ellis was gone. How many scholly players have left since Lebo arrived? I think we should hire Summitt from UT to coach our men's team.
For the most part Auburn basketball has been shown no attention by the important people for a couple of decades now.
The school Lebo left (UTC) has been to more NCAA tournaments in the past 20 years than Auburn has.
i know i'll end up winning you over eventually..nerdy job or not
is that true rk?
Dang RK, a weekday game. I need an excuse to come watch.
I disagree RK, me and Harrison have been to a few games. We are both VERY important people (wealthy, tall, real good looking, smart, clean shaven). He has close to $400 in a SV account right now that he could get whenever he wants it (sorry to tell your personal biz Harrison). He told me that until AU can turn the corner in b-ball, they won't see a penny of that money!
I'm doing some non-Auburn/HABOTN stuff this morning and I wasn't able to get here until now.
I'm obviously very irate about this.
I'm putting up a new thread and banning all comments for a few hours. This is not fair to the 99% of people who act reasonably here. I'm sorry to that 99%.
Check with you later.
The new line is out in Vegas -
AU Women's team is -7 against the men.
Thanks Jay! Yes, I'm serious. You are DA man.
Will-you forgot my lot at au club, it has a giant ditch in the middle of it, but it's got to be worth hundreds.
will is right about how important and good looking we are
We need a new thread.....hello out there over 500 is too cumbersome.
Will everyone quit the bitchin' about the hire. It's done, no amount of bitchin' is going to change it. The negativity is breeding more negativity. It sure as heck isn't constructive reading the various posts right now.
