Tuesday talk

Hey everyone. So we at least have a few official interviewees on the list now:

  • Turner Gill, U. Buffalo head coach
  • Patrick Nix, U. Miami offensive coordinator (possibly by phone)
  • Rodney Garner, U. Georgia assistant/recruiting coordinator

DOOLEY IN THE PICTURE?:
We have unconfirmed reports that Derek Dooley, son of Vince, is interviewing with athletic Director Jay Jacobs today. That situation is difficult to confirm because Dooley is head coach and athletic director at Louisiana Tech.

He answers to the president, Dan Reneau. I'm aiming to correspond with him as soon as possible.

UPDATE: An LTU publicist, asked about the situation, said a statement Dooley released last week "still stands true." The statement says Dooley has not been contacted or interviewed in connection with another job.

HOKE REVERSES COURSE: Remember a few days ago when Ball State coach Brady Hoke said he hadn't been contacted by Auburn? Looks like that stance has changed. The (Muncie, Ind.) Star-Press, a fellow Gannett paper citing unnamed sources, reported today that BSU officials are expecting Hoke to meet with Jacobs today.

Of note: Hoke is schedule to appear in Mobile tomorrow for a GMAC Bowl event.

They are protesting an assumption. There are no actual truths out there.

I don't even think they're protesting an assumption. A big part of this is because many people -- including several HOTTIES -- believe one of thesr two things is true:

a.) that firing Tuberville wasn't called for

b.) that paying him $5.1 million for kicks isn't a good decision

...the whole Olive Tuberville thing is a peripheral thing.

I am completely underwhelmed by the list of interviewees so far, save for TG. It does not inspire confidence in JJ or this process.

Steve FC is what you call a renaissance man**

**The terms Renaissance Man and (less commonly) Homo Universalis (Latin for "universal man" or "man of the world") are related and used to describe a person who is well educated or who excels in a wide variety of subjects or fields.[3] This idea developed in Renaissance Italy from the notion expressed by one of its most accomplished representatives, Leon Battista Alberti (1404–72): that “a man can do all things if he will.” Thus the gifted men of the Renaissance sought to develop skills in all areas of knowledge, in physical development, in social accomplishments and in the arts.

Thinking of the protest reminds of me of that late, great entrepreneur, Nathan Arizona.

FBI agent: Mr. Arizona, do you have any disgruntled employees?

Nathan Arizona: Hell, there all disgruntled. I ain't runnin' a daisy farm. My motto is: do it my way, or watch your butt.

This ain't a daisy farm, the Peace Corps or the YMCA mini-soccer where everybody plays and no one keeps score.

This is big-time college football where coaches get paid millions and if they screw up or their trend lines starts down, they get fired. They happen to get millions on the way out the door.

The little sign wavers better understand that one day, because the world ain't nice. And it won't be payin' 'em millions to go away.

Oh, the Constitution gives them right to protest, and I'm cool with that. It's a waste of time. They ought be studyin' for finals.

Tommy's gone -- fired, resigned, gone fishin' with Al Neri on Lake Tahoe, whatever. It's over.

Look to the future. And if you're buyin' all these interviews, I've got some swampland to sell you.

It's either Boom, Petrino or Johnson.

And I think it's Boom. I couldn't be happier.

Jet, I don't see any of the three you mention as likely.

Petrino has only been at Arkansas one season and would have a distinct following, but also he would have a large segment that are against him. He has already damaged his reputation by jumping around. I doubt he jumps again.

Muschamp has a very sweet deal at Texas and as much job security as you can have in college coaching. I don't see him going anywhere unless we pay him ungodly numbers that are far above his level of experience.

Johnson has only been at GT for a year, so I doubt he would be the man. He is probably the most likely out of the candidates you list, but somehow I think we will go with a more wide open offensive minded coach.

If it's not one of the three (I am 90 percent sure it's Muschamp, 8 percent Johnson and 2 percent Petrino), I will:

a. ask to be removed permanently from the list of Notable Newcomers -- never to return or advance beyond.

b. ask to be given the death penalty on front page quotes

c. petition to have JGT create a new category to be known as "Flaming Idiot" to which my name can be first on the list in perpetuity.

I don't think that Alabama is scared of any potential hire. Why would they be?

Was Auburn scared of the Saban hire? Not according to Phillip Marshall. He kept talking about Tuberville's record against Saban. We also heard that it is different recruiting at LSU versus recruiting in a state where there are two major programs. All truthful statements. And still we are happy with our hire. It's not important that your opponent fear your hire as long as you get the correct person for the job.

Certainly, some hires are better than others. In my mind, Auburn is going after a big name with the up and comers filling out the list if they don't get their first choice.

FSJ, I agree. Auburn is likely chasing a few big names and guys like Muschamp, Fisher, and Gill are the fallbacks.

I don't understand why people feel Nutt would be such a horrible hire. No, he would likely not lead us to the promised land, but he has been successful everywhere he has been. I guess it is a matter of expectations.

The only way Saban would get money from Alabama if he leaves is if they fired him. Otherwise, he just walks away.

I know what you meant. i get bored and just post stuff. I think of those 3 things the scarlett johanssen thing is the most plausible..that feels nice

2:30 PM
Blogger Will said...

Harrison, I think we could make at least one of those three happen for you. I let you try to figure out which one.

Side note...does the dunk have to be on a 10 ft rim?

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

To most Muschamp and Fisher are big names, especially Muschamp and Gill would be a big time hire for the attention it would bring.

2:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I still favor Butch Davis. I think he only makes like $1.7 Million and NC. He would bring something Auburn has long needed, a head coach with a cool nickname.

Blogger Howard said...

FSJ, I'm sure you're right about AU going after the big names and getting the 2nd tier in order, but I'd feel better if the 2nd tier was a little higher. Beyond Gill (on whose bandwagon I surprisingly find myself), none of the publicly confirmed names impress me.

I've only been an Auburn fan for 26 years (since my first Iron Bowl after moving from GA to AL), so I don't carry much weight, but I want a coach that will 1) run a clean program, 2) make Auburn men out of the boys that come to play, 3) outcoach the other guy most of the time, and 4) win the overwhelming majority of the games he coaches (even some when he doesn't outcoach the other guy).

Blogger Harrison said...

yes it does..without any help of anykind. and the never work again has to be because i am filthy rich.

Blogger Aubie said...

wtc, I like the way you think. How about this scenario...
We pay Saban $5 mil a year and make him a customer service rep in the AU ticket office. Then we hire Turner Gill for $2 Mil to be our head coach.
That way we dispose of our bitter enemy, get the guy we want, and still come out cheaper than buying out one of $exton's other clients.

Finebaum's agenda is to be negative and piss people off so they listen and call in sounds like he's succeeded. Second Jet I don't know if I'd step out on that limb you just did. I seriously think its someone were not really talking at the current time...maybe an ole ball coach.

2:39 PM
Blogger Howard said...

My wife and I spent some time last night talking about the ball coach heading west from Columbia. It'd definitely rub some of my gamecock friends the wrong way (dangerous sentence alert).

I'm just not sure that he brings the discipline and energy we need right now.

The search firm sets up these interviews.

jhc, discipline wise, I have no problem with darth visor. I am in Columbia. When he arrived here he kicked half the players off the team. Fear the visor.

2:47 PM
Blogger Howard said...

The search firm setting up the interviews certainly provides for a bit of smokescreen if so desired, as well as any interviews they'd like to set up for PR purposes.

Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, you predicted we would hear something in a few weeks about a week ago. Is that still your impression. If the man is really lurking in the background as you have suggested, I would expect an announcement late this week or early next week.

2:48 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I don't see it happening this week. Anything is possible, of course.

I'd have lost any bet involving Jacobs interviewing Rodney Garner.

In terms of darth visor, if he was wanting to make a change, I think he would have showed up at UT and asked where his office will be.

2:51 PM
Blogger George Huckabay said...

Who has actually been interviewed so far. There are a lot of names bouncing around the world wide web, but who has been interviewed?

2:53 PM

Harrison, you also can buddy up with the agents so their clients can get "interviews" to provide additional income for everyone involved.

I haven't yet been able to confirm Derek Dooley. Louisiana Tech maintains that they have not been contacted for permission ...

Don't think OBC would have gone to UT despite being from East Ten. I don't think he was necessarily searching for a new job but maybe was given an offer he couldn't necessarily refuse.

Blogger Harrison said...

Jay, what keeps regular folks from contacting s.i.d.'s and coaches' "people". do journalists have a password, or do you just have the phone numbers that we can't get?

2:58 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Harrison, please don't hold your breath for the phone numbers of coaches to show up here.

Jay, let me congratulate you on being a successful blogger. You can tell you are successful when you have people typing first when they are the first to comment.

Harrison, I guess anyone could call these people for information.

It's a boring process. I'm warning you now.

Butch Davis is an Arkansas graduate. It makes you wonder why he didn't end up there.

3:18 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

From what I have heard Butch Davis took the UNC job because he wanted a low pressure job were a 8 win season is considered successful. This would explain why he didn't go to Arky and would certainly rule out Auburn.

3:28 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I bet those words never came from Butch's mouth. Nobody would ever admit they went to a school just to be somewhat above average.

My biggest fear:
This entire show is cover for Lowder/Rane/Dye to hire their flunky.
The guys should just pool their money and buy a pro team so they can do all this out in the open.

4:04 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Aubie, where are you getting your info about these guys involvement?

4:13 PM
Blogger Bfoster18 said...

You guys are silly with your ideas on some sort of mastermind plan Jay Jacobs has to completely fool the entire media.

The problem is you expect something like Saban to happen to Auburn. It's not. And it doesn't need to.

FSJ is right about that. Not right about Turner Gill not being a threat to recruiting in this region. You can't kid youself there.

5:54 PM
Blogger Trent said...

Turner Gill will not be offered the Auburn job even after a face to face interview and a phone interview----- MY source who is very creditable and is a close memeber of the BOARD of Auburn have assured me that Will Mushchamp will take the job w/ in 3to 4 days. Believe me or not IT IS TRUE!
