Anthony Gulley WAS in

EDIT @ 5:30 p.m.: OK. So maybe Anthony Gulley didn't commit after all.

Our friends at AUTigers.com reported earlier today that Brantley High standout Anthony Gulley officially had cast his lot with the Tigers. He said last weekend that he would commit to the Tigers in the future, but wasn't prepared to make that assertion public until after visiting Troy this weekend. He thought it was honorable to stick with his promise to visit the Trojans, which I thought was commendable.

Sounds like that trip to Troy still is on.

Here's what I had to say about Gulley earlier this week:

Anthony Gulley, WR from Brantley: Very country. I initially was surprised to see Gulley paired up with Ryan Pugh and Lee Ziemba last weekend. Then I met Gulley. He's very country. Shy kid, very quiet. He really likes baseball, too, and seems eager to play both football and baseball at Auburn. He's a shortstop by trade. Gulley also can play centerfield.

Good morning everyone!!

A nice tidbit on recruiting this mornign I just read.

Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, said that now that he had a couple days to think about last weekend’s official visit to Florida, he really didn’t enjoy it.

“It didn’t feel like home anymore,” Reid told the AJC on late Tuesday night. “I wish the Gators the best. It’s just not the place for me.”

Things are changing so quickly for Reid that he said there was only three things he knows for sure: Florida State is one of his finalists, he will take an official visit to UGA on Jan. 30, and he will announce a college decision on signing day (Feb. 4).

In another turn of events, Reid said he will likely visit Tennessee rather than Alabama this weekend. “They [Tennessee] have been with me longer than Alabama.”

Also, Florida State, Auburn and Alabama sent coaches to meet with Reid on Tuesday. Reid said Auburn “is growing on me more every day” but has yet to agree to take an official visit with Tigers.

And one more note...

The recruitment of M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when he eliminated Georgia Tech from consideration after picking up a scholarship offer from Auburn.

“[Auburn] coach [Gene] Chizik called with the offer,” M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis told the AJC. “It really didn’t shock me because I had heard some speculation last week. But I didn’t want to say anything until it became official.”

Why do you think that AU will 'likely decline' in 2011-12?

You do realize that we have absolutely no idea who at least 40% of our players those years will be, don't you?

Think of it this way: exactly 10 years ago there was no logical reason for AU fans to expect that we would be the West representative for the 2000 SEC Championship. And yet, we were - mostly due to the performance of a player who none of us had even heard of in '99, and who our staff wasn't even considering until he was recommended by his JUCO teammate.

As for our current staff, I don't think it's worthwhile to compare them with their predecessors. Just like with recruits, you can't really assess them 'on paper', you'll have to see how they perform before you can make those kind of value judgements.

In any case, our current assistants have far more impressive resumes than the crew Tuberville brought with him in '99.

It's pretty obvious we're recruiting second tier running backs. We're also looking at backs 5'9" and shorter, which I hear is OK in the spread. We're also getting some "No's", which given our volatile environment is understandable.

So why aren't we going after Jonathon Davis? He's only 5'7", but for those enamored with stars he's got four of them. He's the Atlanta kid who had his scholly revoked by South Carolina, and he's on the clock to give UCF an answer. His high school (Tucker) won the state championship and is a program on the rise. Even if Davis doesn't work out we'd have an "in" on other kids later. This HS sent us Neiko Thorpe.

LuvAU1968, I don't consider myself negative or positive, just realistic. You don't get rid of one of the most successful staffs in the SEC and not expect to go through years of rebuilding. I thought that was kind of a given.

I consider the hiring of Chizik as a Shula type hire. I mean that in terms of expectations, not in terms of coaching ability. Shula was hired to get Bama through a tough time, and was given a realistic number of years to turn around.

I see Chizik around to get us through the post Tuberville years while the stigma associated with the head coaching job at Auburn fades. By the time Chizik is given time to prove himself, we will be ready to go for the big dollar hire if needed.

10:34 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- How do you rate Bowden? His winning precentage was one of the best. Tubs made it to the SEC Championship game in the 2nd year. I don't buy it takes years to rebuild. That is crap. It takes players, and sometimes not very many of them. We can be competitive next year and any year.

Bowden was horrible. The talent level at Auburn steadily declined under his watch. I think it safe to say our talent level under Bowden steadily declined.

Players are only a small part of the puzzle. We have been getting the players until last season. We have the talent to be successful offensively. The defense has been very successful. The offensive coaching was obviously a mess.

10:43 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, if we have had Borges as OC last season, we would have likely contended for the SEC West.

10:44 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, in terms of when to switch to the Spread, I thought doing it last season was very poor timing. It would have had a much better shot in a season we had an experienced QB.

10:46 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Steve ... your conclusion about Bowden is correct .. the talent level did fall off ... but (I can't believe I'm about to say something positive about Tot) 1993-94 wouldn't -- couldn't -- have happened under Dye. It required a regime change.

And that's why I am optimistic (not an over-optimistic type about to be chronic naysayer, as Hoopie categorizes some of my ilk).

Three or four years will give us a clue where we are heading ... and if the level of coaching and recruiting is where I think it is, I think we'll be fine.

I agree with Eddie and Freep that it can be turned around quickly -- Bowden and Tubs did it, and so did Pee Pants in West Vance.

It's about having a plan, pulling in the same direction, and recruiting/coaching. I think Tommy's plan was moldy, part 2 was never gonna happen, and I ascribe a certain level of competency to most (not all) collegiate coaches in the recruiting/coaching department. But that competency is directly related to how parts 1 and 2 are going in your program.

Translated, Yes We Can.

Decision making by the QB is key to the spread. It doesn't take a running QB or even a QB with a great arm. It takes a solid decision maker at QB. One of the difference between going from under center and the shotgun is when adjustments are made. In the shotgun, adjustments are largely pre-snap. There is a delay in post snap adjustments because the QB has to focus on catching the snap. That is the big difference between the spread and the fly offense that GT runs. If you look at the fly QB, he is almost sitting down under center so that he can make his reads at the snap of the ball.

11:12 AM

gatiger, things can get better. Right now things are just a crap shoot. We have an unproven staff, although they may be as good or better than the previous staff at recruiting. I wish we could have kept Nall, Gran, and Price on this staff; but that would have likely caused issues.

Id take Rocker and Grimes over Price and Nall anyday.

Price coaches ends and thats it plus most of his recruiting ties lie west of the Mississippi.

Rocker, on the other hand, does the whole kaboodle and has gotten just as much out of his line if not more than Price and Dunn combined. Plus he is closer to his recruiting area and expertise in his home town of Atlanta. Recruiting kids from GA to Auburn is a helluva lot easier than getting those same kids to Arkansas and Ole Miss. Just wait.

11:23 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUnMobilz, that is very true. I think Tuberville recognized that a grind it out conservative offense and a great defense were no longer going to be successful in the SEC. I find it kind of profound, because when we got Franklin I heard many say that the spread was a high school offense. This last season showed that just isn't the case with the success of the Big 12 teams, as well as many others. Tuberville had the right idea, but we implemented it poorly and probably at the wrong time.

11:24 AM
Blogger Alan said...

Well, if it all it takes is coaching, dont you think weve upgraded dramatically from Tony to Gus, Nall to Grimes, Knox to Taylor, and Ensminger to Boulware?

I respect your points, but taking 4-5 years for us to get back is just nonsense. It never has before, unless you count the Barfield years when our program was in ten times the amount of turmoil that we are in now, and even he had some good teams.

11:26 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

If we had wanted success quickly, Paul Johnson would have been the obvious choice. His fly offense is what many think may replace the spread as the next big thing.

11:26 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

This is my assessment of our bottom line: If we dont start developing QBs before their senior years, we will only have the potential to be really good every 4-5 years. If Malzahn can get at least 2 of our QBs really ready to lead this team on the field NOW, we will be fine.

11:27 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have no doubt that Knox to Taylor was a huge upgrade in terms of coaching. Likely Malzahn will be an upgrade from Franklin, but the jury is still out. Grimes is definitely a downgrade from Nall. I don't know enough about Boulware to judge, but I do hope it is a big upgrade.

11:30 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUBigCat, you hit on it exactly. This is an issue that started with Bowden. We have never developed a solid backup QB since the Pat Dye years. We have occasionally gone with the QB rotation circle jerk, but we have never had the backup come in for a couple of series to get experience and rest the starter. It is one of the biggest criticisms I have had of Auburn since Dye left.

11:30 AM

If you just look at numbers, Grimes is an upgrade over Nall and has even sent just as many players to the Pros.

Steve, I was one of the few who didn't think Nall outright sucked as a coach. But if you agree with going with the spread, you have to think Nall had to go. The atrocity that we called an o-line this year has to be partly on his shoulders. When we were playing smash mouth football, he was in his element. He was clearly clueless when it came to coaching the spread. Either that or just didn't want to coach the spread.

This pretty much proves my previous point: Bowden's last two recruting classes in '97 and '98 were way below average; Tuberville's first class was only marginally better.

And yet we were SEC West Champions in 2000, with a team made up almost exclusively of players from those three classes.

It's senseless to assume that AU will underperform in '11 because our '08-'09 classes don't appear to be above average. It may indeed turn out that way, but right now you're just making an unsubstantiated guess.

Not trying to pick on you - it's just as pointless to predict that AU will be SEC Champs in '11. There's really no way of knowing.

The failure of the Franklin Experience was largely due to offensive line play. The responsibility for that certainly has to at least partially lie with Nall.

Anyone have an update on Chris Todd? I thought he was suppose to have surgery. If he heals and gets his arm strength back, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the running for the starting QB position, although I think a lot of fans will be shocked:)

As a family member, we are happy we have complete offer from AU. This week, has been a busy week for Anthony and his family. Coach Chizik and Coach Malzhan arrived at Brantley High School around 3PM yesterday (01/23/09), and spent a hour meeting with the family and re-affirming there committment to Anthony Gulley.

Anthony, takes his final recuiting trip today and tomorrow, at Troy University, and plans to make his final committment and sign next Wednesday at Brantley High School.

With that being said, as for our situation with Coach Willis, he was considered a friend of the family, it wasn’t until this past Tuesday, that he almost ruined any chance of AU signing Anthony.

Coach Willis, mislead, Anthony, his parents, and Coach Lowery (Brantley HS Coach) and did not give them the proper information about the university's stance on his offer.

I recieved a phone call of Anthonys parents on Wednesday night, and both me and my father, decided to make a effort to contact AU directly, before they decided to write Auburn off there list.

Within, hours of Thursday morning, Coach Perry, Coach Chizik, Coach Trooper, and Coach Malzhan reasurred us of their committment to sign Anthony, and planned to visit him Friday afternoon.

AU Coaches kept their word, and did more than we had expected. Everyone, at AU, was helpful, and polite. But, the final decision will come down to Anthony.

The family has no ill feeling toward Coach Willis, but do not want Coach Willis to contact them, nor do they need to hear Coach Willis's explaination.

When we told the AU Coaches on Thursday morning, of what Coach Willis had relayed to our family. The AU Staff, seemed shocked, on what Coach Willis was doing. We actually felt bad for AU, as we believe that they are great coaches, but greater individuals.

Anthony is a very good boy and a extremely hard worker, with a difficult childhood. He embodies the character that we want people to know in our family. If you ever see us with Anthony, you will understand what I mean. Anthony has had big dreams, but many setbacks in life, everyone in our family will do anything possible to see those dreams come true.

If anyone has any questions, I will be happy to answer them, but I will not engage in verbel warfare over schools, I can only answer what applies to us and how the family were treated.

Anthony has narrowed his list down to 2 or 3 schools, and will make his final decision at Brantley High School on Wednesday. It will be a great day for Anthony, our family, Brantley High School, the coaches at Brantley, the students, and the whole town of Brantley, to see one of their own commit.

If you would like to speak to me directly this includes Jay, with the validity of this statement, you can email me: stevenwallace36117@gmail.com, and I will email my cell# to discuss.

The family will not be taking any phone call til Monday, at that time, will dicuss Anthony's options.
