Picking up the pieces

Hey everyone. Hope you're having a swell morning.

So James Willis left for Alabama yesterday, which certainly will have some ramifications, though I consider most of them short-term issues. Let's examine how his departure will affect Auburn's Signing Day haul.

  • Willis was the primary recruiting contact for a number of committed players. Our friends at AuburnSports.com talked with many of those players last night and I don't see any evidence that their allegiances are waning.

DE Jamontay Pilson, QB Clint Moseley, OL John Sullen, WR Anthony Gulley and WR LaVoyd James remain fully committed.

  • OL/DL Nick Fairley already is enrolled.

  • I haven't heard from LB Jonathan Evans. He's a tricky one because Evans always has liked Auburn and his brother played at Auburn ... yet Willis always was a big draw for him. Alabama hadn't offered him prior to this. Not sure what to think there.

  • DL Terrence Coleman (pictured at right) could be tricky. He told several recruiting websites last night that he's disgusted with Willis and wouldn't consider playing for him at Alabama. He also announced plans to more carefully consider other offers. I still believe Coleman will sign with Auburn.

  • Things get more dicey with uncommitted recruits.

    • Willis was the main contact for Maryland QB Raymond Cotton, whose Auburn recruitment now moves into a third stage. Steve Ensminger was Cotton's initial liaison.

    • Montgomery OL/DL Brandon Moore seemed destined for Alabama or Florida before Willis left.

    • Brewton DT Jamar Travis, a Southern Miss commitment, will visit Auburn this weekend. The scouting services list him as a 4-star player. Travis certainly is considering Auburn, so this will be an interesting development.

    • Florida LB Petey Smith was brash with his moves last night, canceling a visit to Auburn scheduled for this weekend. He told AuburnSports.com last night: "I'm Alabama all the way." That represents quite a change of direction for Smith, whose brother, Eric, is a sophomore tailback at Auburn. Petey Smith recently said the Tigers were the team to beat. It's rare that you see bridges burned so enthusiastically, but it makes for good drama.

Jordan Hair, I don't blame someone for trying to further their career. That is why I don't know who is to blame here, although I think Auburn probably should have offered him comparable money. It is the same thing as Coach Fraud leaving Bama for Texas A&M. It is a lateral move. If Jacobs wasn't BSing, salary should not have been a factor. We have one of the lower paid head coaches in the SEC, so there should be no problem with staff salaries.

Mobilz I'm basing that on our past 3-2 victory over a bad MSU team and a solid beating from a good WV team. MSU will be much better and their recruiting class this year aint half bad. We simply had no answers for WV's speed or style of play.

Conversely we lose our top CB, DT and a very good LB. Not to mention a brand spanking new staff from top to bottom.

A-day game means nothing and wont tell us a thing. I think the offense scored like 10 TDs in Brandon Cox's last A-day game. last year I went to most open practices leading up to A-day and I thought we were about to set the world on fire.

All Im saying is let's pace ourselves here. There's just not alot of gimmes on this schedule.

I was just reading some practice reports. Nothing on Tyronne, although i expect he will get drafted eventually.
There was this gem about JPW:
John Parker Wilson/QB/Alabama: Wilson was another passer who struggled Tuesday. He showed a weak arm and was unable to get speed on passes and under threw a number of receivers who were open down the field. Late in the day Wilson threw a terrible interception into triple coverage

Bryan Matthews seems to think Petey doesn't have a firm offer from Bama or Auburn. That would make sense. They're probably considering it a possible risk to take on another situational type player that lacks SEC speed. At 245 lbs he is good for short yardage situations. But he'll get burned in pass coverage.

This may be old news to you guys... I was just informed that Clinton Durst is not returning becuase we did not offer him a scholarship.

He started 11 games, was the 3rd best punter in the SEC, and averaged 42 yards per punt (having to punt often due to our DA OC).

I assume in our quest to be great, we will find a punter that can quickly become the first or second best punter in the SEC.

What the H#!! is AU thinking?

Mrs Jet would go the slow death route, huh?
Not instantaneous, but spread out over 3 minutes. Sounds like Mrs THT.

"Run over something" (or someone) is a better option. Do it in the name of all things that are good and right in this wicked world.

Ok - My point is simple:

What has J. Willis done in his coaching career to derserve what he got?

Our LBs weren't the greatest while he was here.

Freeeman stayed with his AU pledge even after Willis wasn't reatined originally, or am I mistaken?

He got whipped like a rented mule in Mobile last year didn't he?

Good luck to him.

I'll ask the Criminal Tahd fan on hrere -- Does hiring James Willis take the sting out of losing K. Steele and L. Thompson?

AU fans feel betrayed but I'm not sure they feel the program will fold.

Or is it just me.

Out of these names: Luper, Taylor, Malzahn, Rocker, Roof, Willis -- which would have been the most expendable?

I don't remember our recruiting class either spiking UP or DOWN when Willis wasn't retained.

I just realized the sentence I told you to tell Saban doesn't make any sense... but rather than correct it, it is probably for the better. Confuse that psycho.

I'm here, had been kinda depressed about it all ya know losing JW and Durst. Then I got to thinking bout what the Boomhauer said "Life's like a dang ol' Rubik's cube, man. You move all the colors around and when you get one side you mess up the other side, man."

We gonna get all sides put together eventually.

Oh and I'm sorry I accused you Tar of having one of those cushy Gov't jobs.

What would be good for dinner tonight in the Gump? Since the mrs hasn't been to the grocery store and we have nothing but a half pack of oreo's in the house to eat, I need dinner suggestions.

SteveFc - The Wachovia/WellsFargo thing happened months ago; the govt was originally gonna give Wachovia to Citibank, and wells Fargo offered money for it.

And I can't speak for anybody else, but I wouldn't take a job at uat for any amount of money. Nor would I sell my soul to the devil for any amount of money. Or is that redundant?

I don't understand how we don't have good Mexican food down here. There's a billion more Mexicans than there are in Alabama, but I can find good Mexican food there in almost every city. There's a definite Bamzo conspiracy, here.

Is Clinton Durst a big a deal? Scholarships typically are doled out during the summer. So he's mad that it's five months before June and he's not on scholarship?

I guess I'm missing something.

He would have had to take out loans to pay for his final year of school? Poor guy. Lowly me had to take out loans for my entire UK career.

True story - one time I got food poisoning at a Mexican restaurant and threw up roughly 30 times that night. I would sip some water and then throw up some more.

Being the brave soul I am, I decided to try some Mexican food a month later. And guess what? I couldn't taste anything! It was the weirdest thing ever. I even put salsa on my tongue and could just feel a little but of a burning sensation. The meal was the food equivalent of water. It was like that for a couple of months, and then I was able to taste it again.

And another thing, I was able to taste Taco Bell the entire time, which proved my mind did not associate Taco Bell with mexican food. It is its own thing.

Well, this isn't the time of year that scholarships typically are awarded. That stuff happens during the summer ... just as it did with Adlai Trone, Zach Gilbert, Rod Smith, Jonathan Vickers.
