Picking up the pieces

Hey everyone. Hope you're having a swell morning.

So James Willis left for Alabama yesterday, which certainly will have some ramifications, though I consider most of them short-term issues. Let's examine how his departure will affect Auburn's Signing Day haul.

  • Willis was the primary recruiting contact for a number of committed players. Our friends at AuburnSports.com talked with many of those players last night and I don't see any evidence that their allegiances are waning.

DE Jamontay Pilson, QB Clint Moseley, OL John Sullen, WR Anthony Gulley and WR LaVoyd James remain fully committed.

  • OL/DL Nick Fairley already is enrolled.

  • I haven't heard from LB Jonathan Evans. He's a tricky one because Evans always has liked Auburn and his brother played at Auburn ... yet Willis always was a big draw for him. Alabama hadn't offered him prior to this. Not sure what to think there.

  • DL Terrence Coleman (pictured at right) could be tricky. He told several recruiting websites last night that he's disgusted with Willis and wouldn't consider playing for him at Alabama. He also announced plans to more carefully consider other offers. I still believe Coleman will sign with Auburn.

  • Things get more dicey with uncommitted recruits.

    • Willis was the main contact for Maryland QB Raymond Cotton, whose Auburn recruitment now moves into a third stage. Steve Ensminger was Cotton's initial liaison.

    • Montgomery OL/DL Brandon Moore seemed destined for Alabama or Florida before Willis left.

    • Brewton DT Jamar Travis, a Southern Miss commitment, will visit Auburn this weekend. The scouting services list him as a 4-star player. Travis certainly is considering Auburn, so this will be an interesting development.

    • Florida LB Petey Smith was brash with his moves last night, canceling a visit to Auburn scheduled for this weekend. He told AuburnSports.com last night: "I'm Alabama all the way." That represents quite a change of direction for Smith, whose brother, Eric, is a sophomore tailback at Auburn. Petey Smith recently said the Tigers were the team to beat. It's rare that you see bridges burned so enthusiastically, but it makes for good drama.

True it would have been even more embarrassing this year if he hadn't punted well.

But two scholarships to punters in one class? I see where the coaches are coming from.

And Jay, I assume Tubs agreed to give Durst a scholly next summer, and Chizik told him he wouldn't get one. I am sure some of them learn before the summer.

Did anyone watch the San Diego/Indianapolis playoff game this year? The San Diego punter had an incredible night. With a few minutes to go, San diego had to punt. After the punt, Indy would need just one first down to finish the game, so good punt or bad punt, things were pretty dire for the Chargers. The punter pinned them back with an amazing punt, so they shoot him coming off the field, and he looks like he is giggling.

A real football player would give a determined fist pump, or yell with a scowl. He was laughing. You could tell win or lose, he was going home happy that night because of his good punting. And that is why people hate punters.

I too am not moved my the loan business, since I will be in debt for my schooling another 20 years or so. But if I thought I could transfer somewhere to play football and get a scholarship, well, I ain't gonna hate on Durst for that.

But like I said earlier, Shoemaker is good, so it's not like Chizik is performing without a net here.

5:37 PM
Blogger Josh_Moon said...

Harrison: He very well might be. You don't win the MSU game without him, I know that.

Not guaranteeing the guy a scolly seems silly to me. I understand this stuff is usually worked out in the summer and all, but come on. You gotta have one. He's proven himself. I don't see what the holdup is.

It certainly isn't scholarship limitations. At this point, with the way recruiting's going, I don't think running out of scholarships is gonna be an issue.

5:37 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Is Clinton Durst a big a deal? Scholarships typically are doled out during the summer. So he's mad that it's five months before June and he's not on scholarship?

The point is, you're making it seem as though losing a punter is no big deal and that you can trot pretty much anyone out there to do that job. I was pointing out that the previous staff -- a group of guys who were doing that coaching thing for quite some time -- felt the kicking game was important enough to not only sign two kickers and two punters, but also place a long snapper on scholarship.

I understand that the natural reaction is to agree with every move the head coach makes, but this was a stupid move by Chizik. He needs a punter. He's gonna have a punter on scholarship regardless. He has one in front of him who has proven himself. Tell the guy he's getting a scolly and move on.

The only point that matters is this: You've got to have a punter. You're very likely gonna have a punter on scholarship. If you make Durst that punter, you've got a proven guy who will be around for three years.

If you don't make it Durst, you have to either go out and find another dude, which seems like a waste of time to me, or give it to Shoemaker, who Durst beat out and who also once fielded his own punt.

I'm not sure what having a new staff has to do with anything.

BIG BOTTOM,

--- deep sigh ---

Yeah, the punter from the 5-7 team kept us from being 4-8.

GIVE HIM A CAR!

6:28 PM

shoemaker is on scholarship. If Durst got one, that would make four scholarships dedicated strictly to special teams... that's too much

Blogger Harrison said...

i hope we have the worst punter in the country next year, and clinton durst is the first punter ever selected in the 1st round of nfl draft

DoWhat I think the plane was in Memphis because Chizik was consulting with Jimmy Sexton on how to spin the Willis departure into a pay raise for himself.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Harrison, wasn't Ray Guy selected in 1st round?

6:32 PM
Blogger DoWhat? said...

Ok, the plane was in Scottsboro then heading to Atlanta, Hunstville, Mobile then back to Auburn.

Who all could they be visiting??

6:32 PM
Blogger ballin said...

In addition to the game changer kick aginst LSU, Shoe also had a 7 yder in the 3rd qtr.

6:33 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Josh, having a new staff means having a limited # of schollys available to rebuild the team.

THIS JUST IN: Some HC's don't give schollys to kickers.

Ryan Shoemakert - yeah, he can be the punter. He's not a guy who has never been in the arena.

But, regardless -- (add Alan Iverson here) -- The PUNTER? The PUNTER? We're talking PUNTERS? I mean we're not talking QBs but PUNTERS? Punters? Seriously, punters?

And don't give me - Auburn loses to Tenn and Ms ST without him -- SO WHAT? We're 3-9 or 4-8 and not the wonderful 5-7?

Name me the punter from the last 8 SEC champions and I'll agree, I guess.

6:33 PM
Blogger ron mexico said...

believe me i want durst but i also agree with the new staff in valuing scholarships... the main error here is Tubbs giving a scholly to a long snapper... and we had a HABOTN debate for the ages about that back in the day.

6:33 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

crap. I don't know.

6:33 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

The plane was in Memphis so Trooper could convince a linebacker we're extremely lukewarm about to visit this weekend.

6:34 PM
Blogger ballin said...

Bottom line Chris, if Durst is kincking in the LSU game, AU probably wins

6:34 PM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Seriously guys Durst does NOT need a scholly because we are not going to punt next year. Gus adopted the Kevin Kell'Why Punt?' philosophy.

Why Punt?

6:34 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Give the scholly to a DL or OL and move on.

That's my point.

6:35 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

OK, so Ray Guy was the first punter selected in the first round. Durst will be the next

Marty: David St. Hubbins... I must admit I've never heard anybody with that name.

David: It's an unusual name, well, he was an unusual saint, he's not a very well known saint.

Marty: Oh, there actually is, uh... there was a Saint Hubbins?

David: That's right, yes.

Marty: What was he the saint of?

David: He was the patron saint of quality footwear.

Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

ballin, so what?

Now we're 6-6? Wait wait, a bowl game. I see it now.

We're Bammer with Mike Shula.

6:36 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Clinton Durst better get his degree that's about ALL.

6:37 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Astat-

but Ok State was hot enough on the Memphis LB to offer a scholly. TxTech, TN, and UAT also have offered, according to Scout.

So maybe AU is lukewarm because Super Luper Trooper haven't yet had a time to talk him up to the head man... you know, like Franklin did last year with Todd?

6:41 PM
Blogger ballin said...

I was just pointing out how important the punter is. Yes I would rather be 6-6 than 3-9.

6:41 PM
Blogger ron mexico said...

and another thing Josh Moon....

Durst was a junior he only had one year left to play.

6:42 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Ok.

But what if being 9-3 or better ment giving a scholly to a DL or OL?

6:42 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

Again, for the life of me, I can't think of one punter who gained fame by punting for a champioship team.

6:43 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

I had no idea RM ... I thought he was a frosh.

6:44 PM

I concur. Anyways we are gonna play Arena league style on offense next yr. No punter needed.

Maybe Alabama will offer the former punter a scholly. Lord knows we need a reliable punter.

Emmett, from what I've read he's a raw athletic talent that needs to learn football skills. Good size and speed, rated ***. The overall lack of interest could indicate problems that don't show up on film.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

or could indicate problems with former recruiting. Not sayin it's so, just offering options

It appears to me that the previous coaching staff made a mistake with Shoemaker in giving him a scholly and then didn't coach him very well in order to have him at his best in his second year of punting. Durst was indeed the better punter last year, so tell me please why he had not been on scholarship either at AU or somewhere else before last year? Maybe he just appeared out of nowhere and magically began punting them out of sight with 4 second hang time on his first try.

7:04 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

Tuberville had no problem pulling scholly's from some of Tot's players when he arrived. I can't understand why Chizek would keep guys who can't get on the field and let his starting punter leave. He needs to grow some huuwaaaa. Durst is a junior, but he could go to basket weaving graduate school like all the redshirts and stretch his playing days.

7:06 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

yes, he did anon. Walked on as a junior, was a soccer player in h.s.

I know you say that FSJ and I was hoping you replyed to this subject.

What game did Bammer's punter help win? Which punt in what situation won which game?

Loses are maube easier so I'll open up that question to. Which of the TWO games that Bammer lost did the PUNTER play a vital role in?

7:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Am I wrong in thinking that schollys are a one year thing that can be renewed or dropped at the end of each year? I think that it was that way at one time. If it is still that way and you can pull them as has been indicated previously on this blog by saying Tubbs did that with some of Tot's boys, then why not give Shoemaker's scholly to Durst? Maybe there is more to this story tan meets the eye.

Speaking of people losing jobs, it's getting a little grim in the tech sector. IBM laid off 19k people on Tuesday and Microsoft announced 6k will be laid off.

7:12 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

yes Anon, scholly's are a one year contract.

7:12 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

Yep, when Tubs pulled the scholly's we learned they are year to year. The players' parents protested and Auburn found them jobs to pay for their schooling.

Astatguy

That is why I can't take some of this football nonsense to seriously. We have much more grim things facing us in this country in the near term than losing an assistant coach to the enemy and a punter that may have had his feelings hurt. There are some people tonight that are really hurting and have very little hope for the future. God bless them and all of us.

7:16 PM

Whoa whoa whoa whoa ---

When an athletic scholarships is pulled the said "player" is offerred a chance to stay on for and education for free.

Yes?

That's a common. Same with a player like Chaz Ramsey. He can't go and he gets a free scholly to study, right?

I was under the inpression that any kid who has his ATHELETIC scholly pulled still gets his EDUCATION paid for.
