Recruiting syllabus

FRIDAY NOONISH
Post No. 1,017

Hey everyone. Thanks for visiting the HABOTN so frequently last night and this morning. I knew Thursday night would give us plenty to discuss. Gene Chizik certainly didn't disappoint.

One of the things he addressed was how these next few days will be exciting for him. This weekend ought to put a few gray hairs on his head.

That's because Auburn is playing host to some pretty significant prospects. Let's take a gander:
  • WR Rueben Randle (Bastrop, La.): Star wideout. Everybody wants him. Auburn probably won't get him, but simply coaxing a visit from a 5-star recruit doesn't hurt the Tigers' cause.

  • S Daren Bates (Olive Branch, Miss.): Lightly recruited until recently. Committed to Auburn with an Alabama offer in hand. He's teammates with OL Aubrey Phillips, who is a Tennessee commit who may be wavering. Speaking of him ...

  • OL Aubrey Phillips (Olive Branch, Miss.): He has offers from everyone. He's a 6-foot-6 tackle. He told AuburnSports.com that he'll head to Auburn with an open mind. Phillips is one to watch.

  • TB David Oku (suburban Oklahoma City): Elusive, compact back. Listed at 5-10. I watched him play a couple times on TV (I went to HS in Oklahoma and like keeping up with those teams) and he was willing to brawl between the tackles. Looks like a good one to me. He's a Tennessee commitment who is being recruited by Eddie Gran.

  • CB Taikwon Paige (originally of Aiken, S.C.): He's a junior-college guy who was committed to Minnesota when Ted Roof was there. Paige doesn't currently have an offer from Auburn. Rivals.com lists Paige as a 4-star recruit, but he hasn't received offers from many (any?) BCS schools.

  • DT Corey Gaines (Tallahassee, Fla.): Active, spark-plug kind of inside lineman. He has offers from a variety of SEC schools. He seemed to enjoy his visit to Ole Miss last weekend and says the Rebels are his leader. Auburn has several Tallahassee guys on the roster, so perhaps that can help the Tigers' chances this weekend.

  • Other visitors include: LB Greg King (Memphis), DT Jamontay Pilson (Greenville) and QB Clint Moseley (Leroy).

On the flip side, Terrance Coleman, Jonathan Evans and possibly Brandon Jacobs are visiting UT this weekend. Matthews seemed unsure of what their staus was concerning AU. Demond Washington, he said could still go either way. Again, this is Brian Matthews on Sportscall. Sorry if this is old news.

Greenville defensive end Jomantay Pilson, an Auburn commitment since last March, is headed for junior college.

Matthews just said Brandon Jacobs was NOT going to visit UT and would be signing with AU on signing day.

HRM..... B-Matt thinks that UNC has told Farms if he visits AU then they will pull his offer... Interesting.

Fine by me as well... I'd take Farms for the OL at AU...

5:39 PM

Didn't Pawlowski visit Jacobs about playing baseball for Auburn? Jacobs informed him he was already coming to Auburn to play football.

Does B-Matt know if Rueben Randle is in the house?

5:41 PM

not confirmed yet who is on campus yet... I don't think they generally get on campus until between 5-8 this evening... I could be wrong though...

I really will be surprised if Randle shows up this weekend.

5:45 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

D Miller, picking up Farms and Phillips would be great pick-ups for the O-line. Matthews seems pretty confident that Farms will flip to AU if he visits. Missed on the part about UNC pulling the scholarship if he visits. Sounds like a scare tactic to me, but we'll see.

HABOTN = how funny Comedy Channel would like to be

biting puppets on a stick and kickers eating steak, or something to that effect

I fully expect, in my desire not to get my hopes dashed, that RR won't be in Auburn this weekend. Someone please tell me how wrong I am.

I'm with you THT. Hopefully we will both be surprised this weekend! Sounds like there are some good ones visiting.

can someone please explain how a kid who snaps for kicks on this field in the north Milwaukee suburb of Whitefish Bay ended up on a recruiting visit to Auburn. I mean, I welcome him with open (and empty, i.e. no scholly) arms, but there must be some connection.

One visitor this weeknd according to Scout is Michael "War" Eargle, from Elizabeth, NJ by way of Lackawanna JC in nearby Scranton PA. He played QB at LJC, but is listed by Scout as a DB.

Looks like CGC is going to make sure we use every allowed official visit. I'm sure he's holding one back for BB. I guess he'd have to hold 2, BB and his agent.

6:37 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Zteve, I get the feeling the recruiting situation is very fluid at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of switching between players after this weekend. Some as a mutual decision, some not.

Hotties - gatiger and the missus have just returned from dinner without the gatigercub. I've spent another 20 minutes or so further convincing the missus that I'm a raving lunatic while I get caught up on my HABOTN reading.

Puppets, KOS, Steaks (gatiger had a contribution there) Soylent Green (that was 100% me), J-Z being a major league slacker, this is all truly great stuff.

Omnica would probably be better suited to give 1005 confirmed answers....

From me reading tea leaves (meaning, I don't have a Rivals subscription, just read into subject lines)... It sounds as if Randle's HS coach wouldn't allow him to take the trip. I'm not sure if Oku made it in or not (seems to be some doubt and conflicting reports)...

BUT, it does sound like Farms and Philips are on campus.

Aubie - I think I might like this version better than the first, but I'm not sure how well it translates to those out of the loop. Will they immediately be struck with fear or will they just get a crick in their necks? Either way, I guess it could have the desired ultimate outcome in that it negatively impacts their ability to perform on the field.

I grew up in Prattville. Is Skinny Dan aka Dan Atkinson of WSFa fame?

He did the a/noon kiddy shows when I was growing up. Of course Phil Snow did weather b/c Carl Stephens did sports.

Hoopie ... yeah ... he's back on WSFA ... he's proabably in his early 60s now ... seems older on the air ... very slow talking ... struggles on the bad weather live shots.

He hosted Young World with Marge Payne.

Hotties and Host - now has come the time to say goodnight to all your company, gatiger is tired and gatiger cub won't care about that when he wakes up expecting cleaning, food, play, etc. Saturdays = gatiger and gatigercub time while momma lioness gets a few hours alone. All this requires rest which I need now.

Peace out.

Nite gatiger. Enjoy that time with cub. They grow up so fast.

So who all is frustrated with this Rueben Randle runaround, I mean dang kid if you're not going to show just tell people you're not coming. It's not rocket science.

Whatever happened to Phil Snow? Maybe I missed something, but I thought it was a disgrace the way he was released from his AU duties. Thought he deserved better.

I don't get frustrated with it because they are kids and it just is what it is. I do, however, get ticked off by people like that kids coach and Bryce Browns "mentor". The adults around the kids who are working hard to be the first to make a buck deserve to be on a stick...no, a telephone pole old school style.

9:58 PM
Blogger Monica said...

OH and the parents who allow the "coaches" and "mentors" to swoop in like vultures. Where are these kids mama's and daddy's?

10:00 PM
Blogger JD said...

locked up!

10:01 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Well the mom's and dad's are the biggest kool-aid drinkers around, therefore they listen to the "experts" like BB's mentor and RR's coach because they think they know what's best. Unless you're Ray Cotton's dad they you act as both.

Thanks guys, used to love watching Phil and Coach Dye on the AU Football Review. Man, those were some good times.

Sponge in late. Off subject, but I just saw some highlights of Tracy Rocker back in the day (my day). Man, he was good. I don't remember us having any other tackle like him

Jay. You said the scribes don't have much access to this staff. You think that's by design, or just cause all their focus is on cruits right now. Also, do you think access to Tubs helped him out in his time of need or no?

Jay G...get on Around the Horn on ESPN. I think you could take Woody Paige.

I think access under Chizik is going to be pretty limited. What does that mean for you? Less stories. Can't write without quotes.

10:45 PM
Blogger Jeremy Eubanks said...

If the coach is also a teacher, he very well could still have some control. Someone mentioned that he wouldn't excuse RR from class. If the coach is a teacher, or has other teachers in on it, it could affect the kid's grades and possibility of getting into college.

Jay G, call up some Clearchannel stations. I have a feeling, with the amount of talent they laid off recently company wide, they're looking for fill-ins. I heard some of the guys in Tampa have been double shifting it. Not sure if that's true, but wouldn't hurt to find out.

Jay. The Chiz doesn't seem to have the personality that tubs had. However, Tubs may have been better off sometimes if he had not been quoted so much. he had a tendency to say things that made you go... Whaaa. Why would you say thaaaat.

Chiz' approach is to the point. Little emotion, business-like. Save all the energy for on the field.

I LOVE my new cable - HD LIVE MUSIC!

Although, R.E.M. is having a hard time living up to the Who in 68 Isle of Weigt.

Keith Moon was a madman.

Oku didn't use this as an exscuse NOT to come, that coulb be a big deal. Is there a HOME Bball game tomorrow? And against WHO?

JG - I hope you make the Dunaway and Brown crew a regular gig - class acts when compared to the crap elsewhere.

And I think we get the Olive Branch OL - Phillips.

I noticed Tyrik's got tons of AU people wishing him well but what's his feeling about it? And Mario Fannin as well. He seems very outgoing and actually invited me to a Online SB party tomorrow night.

Quote from the ol' Ball Coach.

I used to play flamenco style guitar for the house band at Randall's. But then I was doing a puppet show, and this crazed fellow in a red jacket attacked me and bit my fingers off. Now I make a living scrubbing these floors. Have you tried to scrub with no fingers? It ain't easy.
