... and so recruiting begins anew

MONDAY AFTERNOON
Post No. 1,048

Hey everyone. Our friends at AuburnSports.com are reporting that the Tigers already are making offers for Class of 2010 prospects. Remember how we all wondered why Auburn signed DT Josh Jackson out of Gainesville (Ga.) High on NSD?

Here's an answer: Gainesville is home to top-rated junior wideout Tai-ler ("Tyler") Jones.

I particularly liked this quote from GHS assistant coach Todd Wofford:
"(Jones) said he knows they are going to need guys in that offense. He said that he knows they are going to need 6-7 receivers," Wofford said. "He said that Trooper asked him who was the biggest-named Auburn receiver he knew. Tai-ler said he didn't know any. Trooper said that's what he wanted to change."

Dr. Fair was on the toughest, but the most interesting profs I had. His WWII class was awesome.

GATiger...Remember the little ball of spit that Brad Moody used to get on his bottom lip during lectures? His southern politics class was really interesting.

I would love to see AU pick up some big-name in-state recruits early. The new staff has GOT to show they can compete for top players in Alabama. Early commitments can help to build positive momentum.

Agreed, depressedAUfan. But, after last season's debacle, do you think high school students will need to see results before committing?

depressed - sorry to leave you hanging on the Big Love topic earlier. Nikki is about to get very, very interesting.

Luv - please forgive me - I've been crazy busy at work.

Monica, no problem. I understand. Most people don't have as much free time as I do.

Luv, no doubt some players are going to be in wait-and-see mode regarding AU. My hope is Trooper, Luper and Co. can be salesman and convince these players that better times are ahead for AU, playing time is avaliable at most positions and they can be the players to help turn the program around. A depth chart should be carried around at all times. A quick start to next season would really help. Honestly, if I was an offensive skill-player watching AU the last couple of seasons, I would be looking elsewhere also. They have got to sell their vision.

Well, in the Fall I did have lots more time. It's just seasonal. However, I will ALWAYS make time for at least a HABOTN quickie.

Hey, Monica, no problem on the Big Love talk. Glad someone else enjoys it as much as I do. On a show full of great characters, Nikki is a walking conflict. Everytime I think I have her figured out, she changes course and proves me wrong. Fantastic.

Monica... HABOTN is to be savored.

Depressed/Luv ... don't fret.

Recruiting is ALL about the relationship and the connection. That's why I love what Trooper said to Tai-Ler Jones.

Kids are going to hear a lot of noise from coaches making their pitches. What Trooper said was memorable and cuts through the clutter. Is it enough to make the connection that sparks the relationship? Who knows? But it's a good effort.

It's a rare 18 year boy that would buy Crest toothpaste because 4 out of 5 dentists say it's best. They buy it because they think it will make their teeth shine and the girl in their history class will think they are hot.

Recruiting is the same way. I think this staff gets it.

Jet - do you really want to have a discussion on quickie vs. savor?

Depressed - I love that you think about the characters as much as me! HA However, that should probably make you afraid.

MOnica ... probably not.

Jet, I'm not fretting. I think Chizik and Co. are definitely going to compete in AL. And, hopefully, they'll do it the right way.

I disagree. Just because you're a successful recruiter, doesn't mean you're doing it the right way.

I'm with Luv on that one. Very few successful recruiters do it right, though.

By right do you mean ethical?
By ethical do you mean not breaking any NCAA regs?

Monica, yes. Also, not making any empty promises.

Personally, I'm a big fan of breakin' rules and behaving unethically. Just sayin'

ethics go deeper than NCAA rules.

J-Z - We definitely shared some of the same classes. I had the WWII class with Dr. Fair and still have the book to this day, I also had the Southern Politics class. Not only do I remember the ball of spit, I also remember him smoking that stinky pipe in the previously mentioned smoking days. In those early days, there was really not much better than heading to the crib asap after class just so I could change into some non-smokey/stinky clothes.

On the recruiting front - I'm so pro-Bill Clark to AU that I just can't overemphasize it. I think that would be a HUGE win and set the tables for AU to strike a powerful blow against UAT in the battle for the boys in sthe state.

I would hope we would have the same level of commitment to upholding the NCAA rules in recruiting as our primary rivals -- UAT, Georgia, LSU, Florida and Tennessee -- do.

Tennessee has self-reported the use of a fog machine and playing "press conference." The others are not on probation to my knowledge, so they must not be cheating.

12:05 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I'm pretty sure the NCAA could find a way to make the movie "Rudy" a recruiting violation.

12:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

PF, agreed. It seems there's not much of that these days.

12:08 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Faked handoffs, punts and field goals are now deemed against NCAA rules as "highly deceptive."

Onside kicks will be result in a charge of lack of institutional control.

Blogger Seanzie said...

New thread everyone.

12:14 PM
Blogger Monica said...

Peter - now you're talking about something subjective. You want coaches to follow ethics as defined by NCAA regs and your ethics?

gatiger....I'm aware that Bill Clark coached at Prattville and is now at USA, but don't know much more. I don't live in Alabama and am wondering what about him makes you think he will be a good in state recruiter?

Also what position would he coach.....dbs?... and how/why is he qualified?

I think that Xs..Os and fundamentals coaching are more important than recruiting. Most internet junkies seem to place a heavier emphasis on recruiting(Moes and Joes).

Recruiting seems to be fun b/c the novice can read, research and parrot facts, rumors and opinions without actually knowing football in depth.

I guess there is no way to do a time-motion-efficiency study to access recruiting effort vs coaching to see which of the 2 has the greatest impact. Both are important, but which makes more of a difference? Michael Crabtree..2 star, Andre Smith....5 star. Tebow..5 star, Okla Qb....3 star. How much is coaching and how much is natural?
