Peepin' the weekin' advance
MONDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,047
Hey everyone. We're sliding into what I expect to be a slow path for the next few weeks. Spring football won't start until mid March and these Auburn basketball teams are grinding their way through the second half of their schedules.
IMPORTANT COMMUNITY INFORMATION
I will be on furlough from Feb. 15 through the 21st. What does that mean for you? The HABOTN will exist only as a daily thread -- posted around 9 a.m. each day and relying exclusively on your input for content.
It is my sincere hope that you'll stick with the HABOTN through this week of inactivity. I'll return on Sunday the 22nd with the Auburn coverage and analysis you've come to expect.

AUBURN GLANCE
Here are things you need to know about what's happening around Auburn.
- The Fightin' Chiz: The team still is "searching" for a pair of assistant coaches. With recruits saying defensive coordinator Ted Roof is planning to coach linebackers, it's unclear exactly how coach Gene Chizik will distribute these final two coaches. One new hire will handle defensive backs. The other new guy? No idea just yet. The thing to remember is that the team's overall direction already is settled. These new hires will be supplemental people.
- The Fightin' Fortners: The team is 23-1 overall, 8-1 in the league. It is loaded with experienced, savvy players who give Auburn an advantage almost every time fingertips meet leather. The Tigers' lone loss came two weeks ago at Georgia. It happens.
Last game: W, 81-54 at Alabama
Next game: Thursday vs. Kentucky (at home) - The Fightin' Lebos: The team is 14-9 overall, 3-5 in the league. This team also is loaded with experience, but it doesn't create a daily advantage. So it goes.
Last game: W, 77-76 vs. Tennessee
Next game: Wednesday vs. Arkansas (at home)

Jay...Is Bill Clark still a possibility for DB coach?
It seems strange that the position with the least depth on this team seems to be linebacker. It is also kind of weird to see us with so many DBs. I wonder which DBs will eat the nachos and turn into LBs.
Slow day, slow two weeks it looks like. Jay thanks for all you do.
Somebody brought up the idea of Eguae playing LB for a year.
This is just a slow part of the year. Baseball season will kick off soon, but it is about as interesting as synchronized lawn mowing.
I don't know ... Shouldn't it be the Limpin' Lebos?
Well, these positions will get hired. That'll make for some excitment ... I guess you'd call it.
Eguae probably needs a year of strength training. I'm pretty sure they're planning to make him bigger for use at tackle.
The baseball team is lacking reliable moundsmen. I foresee many home runs in Plainsman Park's future.
Jay, I don't really think either of the two coaching slots will be splash hires, but I guess I could be wrong. I still want Rodney Garner, but I doubt that will happen. I keep expecting to hear Koonz getting hired.
JGT...thanks for all the good info of late. HABTON is the place to be!
any interest in AU baseball? i always loved attending games when i was at AU and am hoping that the Tigers return to power with the new coach.
The highlight of the baseball season will once again be Cheap Hot Dog Day. Of course, this was always the highlight for me even we were good. Mmmmmmm, hot dogs.
if nothing else, i am always timely with my posts :(
I used to go to almost every home baseball game when I was a student. It's always fun just to get out to the ballpark and be out in the fresh spring air.
However the high level of play from Auburn baseball we have come to expect has fallen off in recent years. Hopefully the new staff can fix that.
JCCW presented an interesting thought in a recent blog. He supposed that after a couple of very successful years, Malzahn would move on to a head coaching position. He ask what would happen during that time if Franklin had two very successful seasons at MTSU. My response would be that Chizik hiring Franklin would be about as likely as Lee Ziemba becoming a ballerina. It ain't going to happen unless Chizik is looking for the most creative way to hand in his resignation.
Baseball just doesn't cut it with me. Sure, if they add some blocking and tackling to the game, I might go for it, but until then, I stick with football, with a little basketball sprinkled in.
Mr. Jay G.,
I'll take that as a no.
The Jet News Service projects that former Prattville High School head coach and current USA defensive coordinator Bill Clark and ex-Iowa State assistant Michael Koonz will fill out the staff.
This projection is based solely on my gut, which was churning this morning.
It is worth absolutely nothing. In fact, you lost part of your life reading this, and that is time you will never recapture. Have a nice day.
We bought 400 tickets to the AU vs UA game at Biscuits stadium for our employees for our spring outing...
TV baseball is boring.. Live baseball is only way togo
hey Jay
will Clint Moseley be playing baseball also???
i loved me some auburn baseball when i was in school. worked with the team for a year when we went to the super regionals. it was a good time.
i hope to see this new baseball staff re-energize things.
Moseley is still in high school. From what I have read, once he is on the plains, he will likely try to play baseball too.
Jay:
Al.com posted a story the other day concerning Lebo's future. What's the over/under on Lebo making it to new Arena?
I brought up Nosa Eguae at linebacker 6'3 235..sounds like an LB unless they are going to put 50 punds on him and make him DT like people say.
Also what about Joe Whitt Jr. for DB coach? Or is he not a DB coach?
Jhag ...
Joe Jr. was promoted from defensive quality control assistant to cornerbacks coach with the Packers ... just don't see him giving up that gig. Also, Kevin Greene is on the defensive staff as well as the DE coach.
Jet,
Isn't his name Jeff Koonz?
JGT,
We appreciate what you do... Of course we'll stick with the HABOTN through the furlough... Where else would we go?
Other notes: I am very anxious to get baseball season started. This time of year sucks! Only sports going are hockey and basketball, and neither are to the good portion of the year yet (playoffs).
At least golf season just got kicked off, Torrey Pines looked very good in HD! I like watching that Camilo Villegas kid - crazy swing! Pebble Beach coming up this weekend!
I thought Lebo was going to, once again, snatch defeat from the jaws of victory this weekend. Nice of him to prove me wrong.
I still say can his butt.
See, D. Miller, I made you lose even more of your life by intentionally getting his name wrong.
BWAHHAHAHAHAHA!
D Miller...
Golf in HD is incredible ... Torrey Pines helps, and well, Pebble will be awesome. I hate will be traveling Sunday and will miss the final round.
Baseball at Plainsman Park is great.
"Baseball is like church. Many attend, few understand." Leo Durocher
My opinion of Golf is similar to my opinion of Baseball. Add some blocking and tackling to it and then we can talk.
Well i'm on a nice 1.5 hour lunch break from serving my civic duty as juror. Didn't get selected to serve in the morning case...maybe the afternoon case will fair better so I can get it over with. If not, looks like I get to do it all again tomorrow.
Jay- I hope you have fun in your downtime...it just really sucks to not get paid for it. Thanks a million for all you do.
By the way, the best way to watch a baseball game for me at Auburn was when I lived on the second floor of Sewell Hall overlooking the field. We would open up our windows, turn the game on the radio and sit outside the room listening to the game. I was lucky to be there will we had Tim Hudson. Lots of fun.
Steve:
I like golf and baseball..
However, I only like to watch baseball live.
I usually only watch the golf majors on TV...
One of my great memories growing up was watching Nicklaus make that back nine charge at Augusta in 1986. I've never seen anything like it since.
Augusta ... incredible in HD.
Even better in person.
Jay G, thanks for the update on your furlough. Of course, we will keep HABOTNing. It's just the natural thing to do these days.
We will, however, miss your hard work on the sports front.
Woo-Hoo. Baseball!!!
I'm still waiting for someone to give me a break down of the young pitchers. Lots of youth at that position. Who has potential, who doesn't?
Jet- Agree completely on Augusta.
Best sports in HD:
Soccer is awesome
Skiing / Snowboarding (Winter X Games or Olympics)
Football
That is my list.
I am a snowboarder and hate skiiers. That being said, downhill skiing is pretty cool to watch in HD. Seeing the skis chatter at those speeds makes me realize how "core" those guys really are.
Steve that quote by Durocher speaks for itself.
FSJ, I would argue that Nicklaus could have never made that charge if he had an even undersized Lee Ziemba blocking him.
P.S. I am more flexible with my opinions on Golf. Legalize the use of loud air horns during the game, and I am all for it.
I actually like womenz softball better than baseball. There is much more strategy there.
During the lull until spring practice, may I suggest the book,
50 Years of College Football by Boyles and Guido.
It's a wonderful book if you like this sort of stuff and don't care for novels.
in random Auburn news, i got my JOE CHILDRESS signed photo in the mail today! very excited to add it to my All-American collection. :)
I have little interest in golf, but I watch The Masters every year that I can. It just seems different from the other majors to me. First time I watched it in HD, WOW.
Jay with you on your involuntary unpaid vacation, will we be getting a guest spot from one of the other sportswriters on staff? I vote for bags.
Phred says - The key to overcoming poor pitching is to be great hitters and fearless base runners.
Anybody got tickets to the Masters? I guess I should be more specific... anybody got tickets to the Masters that wants to take me?
On Joe Whitt Jr: Jet is right. The younger Whitt now is a full-time assistant with the Packers and (rightly) considered one of the bright young NFL minds. He has bigger things ahead of him than a position gig at Auburn.
On Bill Clark: A possibility, indeed.
On Clint Moseley: He's a pitcher and a shortstop at Leroy. I think he'll at least consider baseball, but the football coaches will put the kibosh on that if Moseley has even a remote chance of earning playing time. He (will be) on a football scholarship.
JD: That possibility has been considered. I'd prefer to keep this a one-reporter operation.
Also: Though I didn't get to meet her, shesaid was at the AU-UA game yesterday. She met Wifey y Niña in the concourse.
Almost kept my streak alive!
I like Doug and Josh's show, but Doug takes longer than my wife to get to the point....
Jay G, when do you think you can beat this kid?
D. Miller...
As we are both poor state employees ... we should be a package deal.
Have you been to Augusta before?
Growing up in Georgia I've been to the Masters a half a dozen times. It is a beautiful place - gives you more perspective when watching on TV just how hilly it is, how immaculate the course is kept and just how large the galleries are. It also reveals how SMALL area wise it is - TV makes it look like every hole is all by itself out there with nothing else around. I'm thankful for the times I have been - but honestly - don't care if I ever go back or not. I get asked to go every year but pass it on the people who have never been.
Baseball - I watch a fair amount of the Braves on TV - but nothing compares to being at the stadium.
LT
No, I have never been to Augusta. I would love to go one day.
Since I went to school in GA, I had several fraternity brothers who were from Augusta and went to the Masters every year.
I had a ticket in hand to the Thursday round 1 year, but couldn't go because I had a big exam on that day. Made me sick to miss going like that.
Peter: "Through The Fire And Flames" is quite righteous. The kid sails through it like it's nothing.
Maybe I'll be awesomer some day.
LT... if you have a chance for tickets and pass them up... please send them my way!
Being at Augusta for the Sunday round is one of my top 5 (sports related) things to do before I die. It's on my bucket list, so to speak.
After furlough week, you should have him beat, no?
I've been twice ... for the week in 1996 and for a practice round in 2000.
I'd sell my kidney to Osama to go back. But I'd poison the kidney prior to delivery.
DMiller ... I hope you get the chance ... the TV is beautiful, the reality is even more.
Steve,
I feel bad for you wanting to watch sports with blocks and tackles because Lord knows I watched Auburn football all season long and never saw much of either...
D.Miller, what else is on your list:
Mine:
*Indy 500
*Kentucky Derby
*Some big international soccer match (I don't really care for soccer, but my Latin friends tell me I need to do this)
*College World Series
* and the fifth is a personal sports accomplishment that I actually accomplished on the first try: Birdie 17 at TPC Sawgrass...I guess I need to replace that now.
Sports Bucket List:
1. AU in the BCS Championship Game (preferrably snot-whipping USC, Oklahoma or Ohio State)
2. Final Four
3. U.S. Open at Pebble Beach
4. Ryder Cup
5. Wimbledon Centre Court
6. The Kentucky Derby
7. Michigan-Ohio State (just to get a frame of reference)
I was at the '89 Sunday round when Faldo won his first in a play-off. It was so dark you couldn't hardly see. How they played it out I haven't a clue. We had to look at the on course TV monitors to see what was happening on the green no more than 100 yards away. TV made it appear high noon.
LT
My top 5 Sporting Events attendance wish list:
1. AU in BCS Championship game
2. AU in Championship game of NCAA FBS PLAYOFFS
3. AU in NCAA Men's Basketball Championship
4. Pens winning a Stanley Cup (I did attend Game 1 of last year's Final)
5. AU beating the everliving stinky out of UA-T in football, i.e. by at least 35 points, preferably by 56.
My sports bucket list: (I've never put pen to paper on this before....)
No particular order:
- Sunday Round at Augusta
- Game 7 of World Series (preferably to see my Cards win another)
- Kentucky Derby (I have been to the Belmont, saw Smarty Jones come up a nose short of the TC)
--to add to the Derby, I'd love to witness a TC winner, and since I have already been to The Belmont, add in going to The Preakness.
- Watch AU win a NC in football
- See AU in the College World Series (I want to go to the CWS in person regardless)
- See AU in the Final Four (I want to go to the FF in person regardless)
- British Open @ St. Andrews
- I'd love to actually play Augusta, St. Andrews and Pebble Beach (among others, but those are top 3)
- Visit every major league baseball park (the ultimate father/son road trip?)
I'd love to hang a half a hundred on 'em ... by going for 2 at the end.
I just want to top the 55 they got in '48, or was it
50? I try not to remember those games.
On another note, D.Miller just reminded me of one of my already attained highlights: playing a round on the Old Course. In 1987, just signed up the night before and was placed with a married couple who were serious golfers. I felt like a retard, but that didn't take away from the amazing experience. Cost back then was about $40 for green fees and a few more bucks for rental clubs.
Isn't Bill Clark the DC at South Alabama? Would we really swipe their coach before they even fielded a team?
Steve - I say swipe away. They haven't played a down of football yet as anything other than a "rec" team. I think he'd be a HUGE win from recruiting standpoint. A direct line into the football hotbed that is Prattville. A great source for virtually every other
6A team in Alabama.
The only no-brainer about it in my mind is why he even made that particular move at that point in time. It has just never made any sense to me. But then, my phone never rang from his extension in order to get my advice.
Doug Amos is all on the Bammer hate wagon* today.
*Bammer Hate Wagon - hate every other school except BAMA
I hit it right on, Josh Jackson's teammate top WR prospect for 2010 is visiting
Jhag, you're wise beyond your years. You will do good things at Auburn.
SteveFC - you reminded me that we almost swiped John Thompson off Bill Curry's Ga State staff; they haven't played a game yet, either.
In fact, I had forgotten that we hadn't hired him.
jhag, I think his name is Tai-lor Jones. Mentioned him last week, also ATH Simms.
He is visiting now? Is there another NSD?
Well, A-Rod gains a half ounce of respect back by coming out and admitting to using performance enhancing drugs rather than keep up some tired charade like Bonds and Clemens.
Still a cheater.
Never thought of a sports bucket list, but here are a few.
AU BCS championship game
Going to a game in Fenway (hate the Red Sox but feel I need to go)
Marked going to a game at Wrigley off my list last year.
Go to a MX race at Glen Helen
Go to a game at every SEC stadium
Go to races at Talladega and Bristol
When is Tai-lor visiting? Surely an unofficial... Or a junior day or something, right?
Also, pronounce Tai-lor. Is it like Tyler or mor like Taylor? I keep thinking Tyler.
i can say i have seen AU play at every SEC school. AU @ Kentucky in 2005 completed my tour. good times.
Coworker's son plays at G'ville - he pronounced it "Taylor"..... supposedly has 20+ offers.
It would be great to see this staff pick up a big name recruiter in the southeast. There is going to be a limited number of players coming from OK and TX to play at Auburn.
I guess that makes more sense than "Tyler". For that to be right it would probably be spelled Thai-lor.
I hope everyone is preparing themselves mentally for Puppet Hour. See you then.
The only Tailor Jones I see online is a girl basketball player down in Florida. On the upside, from the video, she looks quicker than most of our wide receivers.
Yes, Michael. My oozie is locked and loaded.
RE: the kid from Gainesville....
Junior receiver Tai-ler Jones (pronounced Tyler), 6-foot, 175 pounds, received the news Monday that Auburn was extending an offer.
I suggest you keep your fingers out of the puppets' heads.
Don't forget the "-" Steve.
Any news on when Junior Day is at AU?
I can't believe I just asked that question. Like it really matters.
THT, the former Dr. HABOTN, you need to seek medical treatment.
hehateme - I have Rx'd 2 aspirins and a large dose of reality for TarHeelTiger.
My sports bucket:
1) See Bama win another national championship in football ( I was lucky enough to be in New Orleans on 1/1/93)
2) See the final round of the Masters (in person)
3) See the Celtics in the NBA Finals (in person)
4) Go to the Kentucky Derby
5) Play a round at St. Andrews
6) See a Bama/Notre Dame game in South Bend
7) See the Bama basketball team in the final four
8) See the Red Sox in the World Series (in person)
9) See a game at Wrigley Field
10) See the Dallas Cowboys play in their new stadium
Things I missed out on but wanted to see:
1) A game at the old Boston Garden
2) A baseball game at the old Tiger Stadium
3) Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, & Magic Johnson playing basketball
Having been there for 4 practices rounds and 4 competitive rounds, I'll choose the practice rounds.
You can see so much more.
Of course, I got to follow Tiger, Jack and Arnie around in '96 (Tiger's last amateur year).
wakerider, LMK if you want tixs to Bristol. I've got 3pair I need to sell. spring race
Sports bucket list:
*See my daughter score a goal as a full scholarship soccer player at any college program.
*See Man United play/beat Chelsea at Old Trafford.
*Attend a World Cup match ... preferably England-Spain or Brazil-Argentina.
Jay GT - THT and THTjr were not pleased with the recent results at Upton Park/Boleyn Ground. Congrats to MU
You like West Ham United?
I didn't think they had any fans ...
Oh, I forgot two items on my wish list
1. Watching TurboProp impale Saban with a drumstick next fall at Jordan-Hare-Dye
2. Ditto Willis.
New thread up on Tai-ler Jones.
Shamelessly snagged from AuburnSports.com, but I have them full credit.
I'm excited about AU baseball this spring. To me, Plainsman Park is the nicest venue in the SEC.
Mr. Jay G., Can you shed a little light on the probable starting rotation and tell us what to expect?
Things I have checked off my bucket list
1. Saw Andre Agassi play his final match at the U.S. Open
2. 1989 Iron Bowl in Auburn
3. visited St. Andrews - didn't play, not a golfer
4. Game at Fenway. Saw my buddy Oriole Gregg Olson give up the game winning homer.
5. Saw the Rangers at MSG - Beezer in net
6. Every home game (and some away) of Bo Jackson's career
7. Auburn football team wearing Orange jerseys 3 TIMES.
8. Practice round at Augusta.
9. Dinner with A.J. Burnett
10. Played a fantasy hockey game on the Predators home ice
