Auburn adds a cornerback

Hey everyone. Our friends at AuburnSports.com are reporting that Georgia DB Taikwon Paige has received a scholarship offer and will sign with the Tigers tomorrow morning.

He wasn't recruited by many BCS-conference schools. Not sure why.

Auburn now has commitments from 21 high-school players and two junior-college guys.

Julio wasn't the big difference for Bama.

9:29 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Julio is clearly a difference maker for them ... but they got their OL act together ... they were outstanding at NG, MLB and safety.

And they had a senior QB that wasn't bad until the bowl game.

Even so, Julio will make a lot of money -- even after he leaves West Vance.

Julio was the game changer on that team. Take him out, they don't get to 10 wins. Ask John Parker

I have no doubt Julio will be in the NFL, but what made Bama last season was how they played as a team and executed better. One player here or there doesn't make you undefeated. The best example was our 93 team. They won because they played smart and played as a team. They had confidence in each other.

In terms of Auburn talk, the issue was we never jelled as a team this last season. We had the potential to have the best defense I can remember, but Simms going to the NFL and the lack of participation by the offense turned our outstanding defense into a punching bag. Hopefully next season will be different.

Ron....I'm guessing that if one of the following players can't step up, then we are in trouble for many years:

Berry, Jr, 6'-3", 312#
Cooper, So, 6'4", 291#
Coulahan, So, 6'-4", 311#
Eddins, Jr, 6'-4" 289#
Isom, Jr, 6'-3" 294#
McCain, Sr, 6'-6" 295#
Odom 6'-5", Sr, 303#
Roseman, Jr 6'-4", 275#

Those are last year's heights/weights and this coming season's class. Surely some of these are ready to step up.

One thing that most (but no one on here) doesn't give much credence to is that the lack of injuries helped our rival and punished us. I agree with JET in that the big lineman was their best player. Look what happens when he wasn;t in the Sug bowl. Then the replacement goes out. They then see what happens when injuries occur and you have no depth. For goodness sakes, we played Pybus a lot this past year.

But a much better year is ahead.

Big. (love your picture) To your point, no one considered Bama's RB's to be better than above average, but their O-line opened some big holes. On the other side, remember Rudy Johnson. Robert Nelson, a UT commit, was also on Auburn's list. He says the UT coaches told him this.

“The coaches told me I am going to be a part of a new program at Tennessee, and I may have the opportunity to play in the NFL,” he said.

A coach telling a new recruit that he may have the opportunity to play in the NFL is distasteful to me. To say you will have a better chance of making the NFL if you come to UT might be fair, but college coaches don't know what recruit will turn into an NFL level talent in general.

We are actually 5th in the SEC West in terms of last season and in terms of next season we should be 4th or 5th. It is too be expected with losing out entire coaching staff. As for settling, I am not sure what option you believe we have? We made the choice. We can look to the future and get behind this program or we can make childish remarks and whine.

Shouldn't be a terribly stressful thing . Who signs and who qualifies and ever sees the field are two different things anyhow. What if we signed 4 of the top ol we could have and none qualified? We got lineman, we're about to have some mph on the field.

11:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Kathy, the difference in the GPA versus ACT could be due to where he went to high school. I went to a small country high school. It wasn't as challenging as the city schools I attended. Maybe that is the difference.

The offensive line will be a concern, but I don't think it is a concern that can't be addressed. We look okay for this coming season. In terms of the running game, at times it looked like Tate would become a breakaway threat, but he always seems slow to get to the corner. Once he heads down field, he has good speed. I guess I am saying is he lacking quickness. Fannin certainly has potential. McCalleb could be interesting.

What will likely make the biggest difference is if we can stretch the field with the receivers. I know that Malzahn says we will do it, but after the Franklin Experience, I am definitely a show me guy.

The other question will be where all of these RBs will play. You can bet we will see a lot of them change positions.

Everyone here getting some windy conditions? Wind chill just N of ATL is 1 degree!
Signing day needs to bring the HABOTN Hotties some HOT LOI faxes!!
Steve, who will be the biggest surprise as an AU commit?

12:17 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hmmm, I have no idea. So far, the list of surprise commits seems to be dwindling.

Here in ATL, GA took the news of Reid to FSU very badly....... they thought they had him.
AU will get one or two big surprises (just my prediction, but what do I know?).

Dontae Aycock is probably the most likely on Jay's list of on the bubble players. Earlier today I was hoping we would get 3 out of the 10, but I was hoping Phillips was one of those three. Now I am hoping for two.

I am just guessing based upon what I have read. UT and UGA losing recruits to FSU doesn't bother me that much. It seems a lot of people had hope for Phillips, but I was very uncertain based upon his comments. He mentioned a surprise and he gave us one to some degree.

At the moment, I am glad I am not a UT fan. They seem to be the most likely to have a disappointing day tomorrow. Unless we lose some commitments, like possibly Heavens, I feel pretty good about this class.

I am in Columbia, SC and it is 37 outside now. That is about 20 degrees too cold for me:)

An extra gear at some skill positions will cover up some ol flaws. Ziemba will be at 100% this year. I'm not worried, can't wait to see the battle at qb/rb/wr

12:26 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

Aycock would be good for AU - let's hope it happens!

12:28 AM
Blogger BinOBA said...

Given the circumstances we have a great class. We've done more at the skill spots this year than the past 5 combined.

12:28 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

I can see spring practice.... when you have 4-5 QB's (or 7!) line up to take reps - they will hand off left AND hand off right to get all 10+ RB's some reps!!
Should be interesting.

12:30 AM
Blogger BinOBA said...

I wanna see rolison, burns, and aycock on the field at one time. Never knowing who would line up where. Malzahn could probably have a field day with that. Opposing teams will have to worry about more than winning individual matchups and stopping our "scheme".

12:36 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do think the QB position will be wide open. If Burns doesn't show a better grasp of the offense, Todd or Trotter may end up being the guy. Somehow I don't see Caudle in the mix. As for the incoming QBs, they will likely compete to be the backup at best.

12:38 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't believe you will see a lot of freshmen play this season. If I had to guess, I would think we might see a runningback get playing time and maybe a couple of receivers. That high profile TE will also likely see the field even with out talent at that position.

12:40 AM
Blogger BinOBA said...

Rolison has the kind of accuracy that can get him out there pretty quick

12:42 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

Never know about QB - I think the kid from Leroy ran the spread in high school, so he might have a head start on the other incoming QB's........... but, he needs to eat 5 PB&J's a day, or the SEC defensive ends might break him in half!

12:43 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Early playing time can be the death of a good quarterback. We made that mistake with Burns and Campbell. I hope we don't see it again.

12:44 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

The Rolison kid is supposed to be the real deal! Maybe he can compete early for PT.

12:44 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

A freshman competed and played in every game (I think) for a high profile team this year...... of course that freshman was the number 1 recruit in the nation.

12:46 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Anything is possible, but successful QBs tend to get redshirted their first season. If I am not mistaken, we will sign three QBs this class, which is astounding. I would be surprise is none of them are moved to other positions.

12:46 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jason Campbell competed as a freshman and I think it cost him a couple of years. It really hurt his confidence.

QBs are different than most positions, and with an offense like Malzahn's, decision making is the key. I hope that Burns can be the guy. If not Burns, I hope Todd's arm is vastly improved. As for Trotter, I think a lot of people got excited about him, but I am uncertain. The guy I don't think we will see is Caudle because, even if he is good, he won't be around long and hasn't gotten enough experience.

12:49 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

Mulzahn can make some quick decisions and focus his time on installing his system. If a young QB steps up, they can take advantage of the opportunity.

12:50 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

I think Campbell played for 2-3 different OC's, correct? It's difficult to change systems every year.

12:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Of course, I am only guessing. The other scenario would be similar to what I think Franklin was doing this last season. I think he wanted to bring Burns along knowing that Todd wasn't going to last for the long haul. Unfortunately I don't think Burns caught on as quickly as hoped and Todd's arm was pretty much jello after the first half of the LSU game.

12:52 AM
Blogger BinOBA said...

Rolison appears to be MUCH more assertive than the other two guys. We'll see if any of them pan out eventually, here's to a lil surprise sometime tomorrow, guys. I think if we approach with cautious optimism we'll do just fine.Night, and war eagle!!

I am thinking Campbell played for 4 OCs: Lovette, Petrino, Nallsminger, and Borges if I recall correctly.

12:54 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

OK, 4 OC's. That hurt him more than playing early, wouldn't you think?

12:55 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

That is what jhag was mentioning earlier. It really stinks because I think we could use him. I hope to see us get a surprise linemen tomorrow, but I don't know who. I think we have playing time to offer.

12:55 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

What hurt Jason Campbell the most was a guy named Dwight Freeney at Syracuse. After the pounding Freeney gave him, he changed.

12:56 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

And yes, it is the Dwight Freeney that plays for the Colts now.

12:58 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

I do think throwing someone to the wolves early can be costly, but the right coaching, and coaching decisions, can do wonders!

12:59 AM
Blogger Blake_34 said...

Steve,

I started to disagree with you, then wikipedia searched several of the top QBs from this past season that I knew played as freshman. Turns out they were redshirt freshman.

(McCoy, Bradford, Harrell. Tebow played as a true of course, but only in limited action.)

12:59 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I have no doubt some QBs start as freshmen and succeed, but it is the exception to the rule. I have no problem with a freshmen QB being the backup and would actually love to see it. It is one of the criticisms I have always had of Auburn. You should always play two QBs similar to the way Florida did with Tebow and Leak. Leak was the starter and Myer made it clear. He even said that if Tebow had a problem with playing time, he wouldn't play at all. That is the kind of way I think a backup QB should be brought along.

1:02 AM
Blogger Blake_34 said...

But I still don't like the idea of playing Burns. He doesn't bring much, if anything, to the table. He is inaccurate, makes poor decisions, apparently can't learn a playbook, and is not the incredible athlete some seem to think.

1:03 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

What we saw from Burns in the Iron Bowl was very much like what you see with inexperienced QBs with too much pressure thrust upon them. Our offense was too limited and Burns looked very uncomfortable.

1:04 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

There is no doubt 2 QB's should play! One guy gets hurt, you actually stand a chance of winning more games after the injury.

1:04 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

By the way, I am no expert. I just have been watching or listening to SEC football for over 35 years.

1:05 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

Yes, he looked uncomfortable for the reasons you mentioned, as well as that other team breathing down his throat all game!

1:06 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, and we keep making the mistake of not having a QB prepared when the starter graduates. Cox did very well after Campbell graduated, but there are numerous other examples where we had an off year because of an inexperience quarterback. The worst example was Damien Criag. Bowden didn't play any other QB. We had a very tough time the following season.

1:07 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

And I think the SEC will be improved next year!
I'm telling myself Chiz and crew can handle it.

1:11 AM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Blake, Burns certainly has some drawbacks. But to say he doesn't bring anything to the table is Ludicrous, theres a reason he was one of the top QB recruits. He has a rocket arm, and is very mobile. Obviously none of that means crap if he makes poor decisions, is inaccurate, and generally looks lost like he was for a good bit of last season. But if he can make some good strides under the new staff, he has alot to offer.

1:12 AM
Blogger Blake_34 said...

Why not Caudle/Rollison? Caudle, to me, seems like he would make a good "game manager" QB that could distribute the ball to the team in this Malzhan offense. And he is a senior, so Rollison could be more comfortable feeling like he only has to be limited for one year. I guess you could do the same with Todd, if he is healthy, but the fans are already against him.

1:12 AM
Blogger hehateme said...

Yep, Todd has a mountain that may be too high to climb......
