Aycock bound for Auburn?

MONDAY NIGHT
Post No. 1,026

Sounds like one of the Tigers' "secret" visitors may switch affiliations.

Tampa QB Dontae Aycock, whom Auburn wants at tailback, reportedly has lost his offer to Georgia Tech. He had been committed to the Yellow Jackets. They want/wanted him as a quarterback.

An excerpt:
“Auburn called him on Thursday and offered him on Friday,” Chamberlain coach Brian Turner said. “He was told [by Georgia Tech coaches] that if he took the trip [to Auburn over the weekend] the scholarship would be pulled.

Sorry WEG. I was too lazy to link the url! Jay got it on the front page.

If my child was being recruited, I would advised him/her to take all of their allotted visits. It's a time they should enjoy.

Aycock has a great pedigree. His brother, Dwight Smith, has spent 9 years in the NFL (7 if you don't count the last two when he was a Detroit Lion). Smith guided him through his recruitment - to a great conclusion.

From the ajc.com

Perry offensive lineman Johnnie Farms had said he was going to wait until Wednesday to pick between North Carolina and Auburn.

On Monday, Farms changed his mind, saying that he was sticking by his commitment to North Carolina. He made an official visit to Auburn this past weekend.

“Auburn is not where I want to go,” he said.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior said he will sign with UNC on Wednesday.

Michael - the BC coaching situation was the first thing that came to my mind as well. I applaud these folks for taking a hard stand, but when everyone else plays by different rules you're only hurting yourself.

Aycock's coach should take a page from Randle's coach and make some calls...that will keep the AU boogieman away.

Sponge here. Getting kind of crazy on the last days of cruitin. Just the fact that we may get some kids that UT,Ole Miss, Alabama etc wants is good enough for me. TT's initial class before his firing (eh.. resigning) we were kicking UT Martins and Lousianna Layfayett's butt for guys.

Easy Sponge....don't get me started. xCTT had a higher player star average than we do even now. In fact, several of the original recruits have higher ratings now that their seasons are over than when initially recruited by xCTT.

7:37 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

As for RB's. We need some, cause we aint got none. Maybe Fannin, but he hasn't bowled me over yet..maybe due to his shoulder surgery/recovery. Who else do we have that can take it to the house? Nobody on the roster now. We better sign about four of em and see if a couple pan out.

Jet - there was no help or hope for that team as I recall.

7:41 PM

Hoop. Yes and no. Lets see how we end up at the end. I'll say this. Rarely does a 5'7" player that weighs 170 make it for long in the SEC. I'm ok w/ one or two for a change in pace. Just take a look across the state. Hate to say it, but Nicks cruits have size and speed. NFL bodies. People didn't rave at his LSU teams talking about "how talented" they were for nothing. Lastly, players that AU recruits do get some credibility from the services regarding stars. They figure if we want them, they must be pretty good. I say stars dont' mean diddly UNLESS, a lot of other SEC teams are after these kids. Just my opinion.

It's time for this madness to end.

7:51 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since Utah averages around 40th each year in recruiting, I would say Stars don't automatically mean alot. Since only around 1/3 of recruits actually end up contributing to a team, it's as much about pedicting/managing attrition as it is assembling stars.

I trust watching the kids live in camps/workouts than watching stars and film or worrying about the rest of the SEC.

We need more OL and tall, fast WRs.

7:51 PM
Blogger Monica said...

It will be interesting to see how Tyrik develops.

7:53 PM
Blogger Emmett said...

Hoopie - Even Tom Luginbill made a similar point on the radio today. That Most schools, even big BCS teams, still have to refine and teach most prospects. Some time under the right coaching, and those are the players that can build a base for the team.

7:54 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

I agree w/that too Hoop. I'm not so big into stars as I am in seeing who else is recruiting the kid. Size and speed. We need both. Especially at WR, for sure.

Is the dead period on now? Or can the REC still buy a kid a car on Tuesday?....

Mon....I was considering Tyrick and his possible academic qualification issues. I remembered reading in the book "The Blindside" what Michael Oher's family (adopted Mother)did to get him NCAA cleared. If we need to go those extremes...let's do it.

8:00 PM
Blogger Slim said...

I agree...With a few 2x4's and some stakes you can construct anything out of cement. However, without the right combination of ingredients ie, rebar, water mortar and TIME...the structure will crumble. Coaching is key. Coaching good talent is AUsome.

I have no problem with coaches pulling offers when committed players decide to visit other schools. It is a lesson in commitment.

It is really hard to tell what direction Auburn will take, and it is only partially because of Auburn. The competition in the SEC West is going to be even tougher. The first goal has to be to be in the top two or three in the West. As of now, we are likely 4th or 5th depending upon how much improvement we see from Arkansas.
