Auburn def. Alabama, 81-54

Hey everyone. Welcome to Coleman Coliseum. We (were) live blogging the game.

HABOTN Player of the Game®

PG Whitney Boddie: 12 points (6-of-8), 12 assists, 0 turnovers in 27 minutes

  • FINAL (media timeout)
    Auburn 81, Alabama 54

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:36, 2nd half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 78-47. Same ol' stuff. This hasn't been a competitive game since the 15:00 mark of the first half. Auburn's reserves have played better than I expected. (I'm reaching, I know.)

  • THIRD TO @ 7:17, 2nd half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 70-39. Not close. Auburn has pulled all five starters.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:42, 2nd half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 60-32. Fortner is just playing around with her lineups now. Parrisha Simmons is in with Smalley at the point. How did Alabama get so bad? I mean, Rick Moody used to win a lot.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:07, 2nd half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 55-32. Same old stuff. Alabama is playing better by virtue of hitting a few shots, but they're still confused in general. Auburn is not.

  • HALFTIME:
Auburn leads, 47-21. This is ugly. Auburn has twice as many rebounds, four times as many steals and one-quarter as many turnovers. One item of interest for Auburn: Smalley didn't play much during the first half because of foul problems. Had she been available, perhaps the Tigers could have built a more comfortable lead ...

  • FOURTH TO @ 3:45, 1st half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 39-21. Nell Fortner, in an unusual move, has subbed in several reserves. They're still finding their way. I'm talking about Reneisha Hobbs, Morgan Jennings and Chantel Hilliard.

  • THIRD TO @ 7:56, 1st half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 32-16. Yep, that's a 10-0 run for the visitors. Alabama is not a good team. Weird passes, slow-to-react defense, no sense of purpose on the offensive end. Auburn is eating them up.

  • SECOND TO @ 11:24, 1st half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 22-16. Just to give you an idea of how confused (confusing?) Alabama is ... they just let Bonner miss a three, get her own rebound and drive in for an uncontested layup. As you can imagine, that took a while. Nobody was paying attention.

  • FIRST TO @ 15:28, 1st half (media timeout)
Auburn leads, 11-9. Alabama doesn't have an offensive plan that I can detect. They made a few nice defensive plays so far. Auburn is working hard -- just not hitting a lot of shots left.

  • Your Auburn Starters
    PG -- Whitney Boddie
    SG -- Alli Smalley
    SF -- Sherell Hobbs
    F -- DeWanna Bonner
    F/C -- Trevesha Jackson

Jay GT - it looks like the UA-T women's team, which has lost a bazillion of their last bazillion +1 conference games, can still draw crowds equivalent to AU men's team.

I have a question for you all.

Do you consider a person who did not attend a particular institution a "side walk fan"?

If so, do/should sidewalk fans received the same amount of respect as, for lack of a better term, "alum fans"?

3:08 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jet, the only redeeming parts of Assassins are Julianne Moore and a couple of the shoot out scenes. At some point, even Stallone had to ask the director, what's the point of all of this?

3:09 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sidewalk fans are fine, but I hate the sidewalk fans that insult alumni or another institution while claiming one they did not attend. That's where I draw the line.

I.E. a former supervisor is an Alabama fan because he grew up one. Attended the Naval academy yet claims Bama like he's an alum and goes after us Auburn alum and our school. Not acceptable.

Afternoon everybody. Gov. Jet, your response to the Gnome is classic even in the Jet Notes version. I'd love to see the full text.

Personally, gatiger never attended a class at AU main, though I attended more than my fair share of classes at AUM as I did not subscribe to the 4 year plan before I got my degree. So there's my painful admission before you all.

The fans of any school that really seem to bother me are those that not only never attended said college but I strongly suspect they probably didn't graduate from their local high school. You just can't reason with some people and those are a perfect example in my experience. On the times of late when I've submitted to the torture that is the PF show; those oxygen thief Bama fans who call in claiming to be fans since birth because daddy was I also suspect that not only did they never attend a college course anywhere but that these type of fan have never set foot on the campus even for a game. You know who they are, you just know it with every fiber of your being.

It's a dirty little secret that AU has a share of this type of fan too but I truly believe that the share is quite small by comparison. In my 4 years living in the state of Georgia, I've decided that I detest UGA fans just a hair less than I detest UAT fans.

Just some random thoughts by gatiger on the question above from Gnome. So that's it. Carry on. Nothing left to see here. Show's over folks.

Not sure I get the whole problem with being a "sidewalk" fan. Maybe it's because like gatiger I "only" went to AUM.

Why do you care why a person supports a particular school or not? Do we not have the same purpose in seeing our school be the best it can be?

6:12 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Oh and the above comment was not directed to anyone in particular....

Guess I should have said "I don't get why anyone cares why someone supports a particular school or not."

6:18 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I, like a few of you, did not attend AU... not even AUM. I am just as big of an Auburn fan as the rest of you, though. I do like the Auburn Creed, and it is part of why I am a fan of the University and what it stands for.
Neither of my parents attended AU either. My uncle is the only person in our family to have attended/graduated from AU. (My wife is currently in her 2nd semester of a 1 year program at AU, but will not earn a degree.) I have, however, spent my entire life supporting and cheering for Auburn. I have attended games and such for years. I do at least know where the campus is.

My only problem with sidewalk fans/alums/whatever you want to call 'em... are the ones who are obnoxious, condescending fans who have never even been to a game or set foot on campus. They spew forth reasons of why they are a fan that haven't been relevant since before they were born.

6:29 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

My thoughts on the sidewalk fan thing..

I'm fortunate enough to have attended Alabama. However, someone that didn't attend Alabama (or Auburn) pays the same taxes that I do. These taxes support both institutions. In my opinion, these fine folks can love or hate whoever they want...whenever they want.

6:33 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I guess you could say I was a sidewalk fan until I finished high school and went to Auburn. I haven't noticed any difference since. I love AU and hate UA-T with the same passion as before.

6:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Well, seeing as we are doing the personal admissions thing, I thought I might reveal some of my history. Yes, I have something in my past that is much more embarrassing than any of this. Was I in jail? No. Did I beat my wife? No. It is something much more embarrassing than that. I got my degree from the Univeristy of Alabama in Huntsville. If that isn't bad enough, it gets worse. I use to work for the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

I am glad to have finally gotten that off my chest. Maybe I should have just beat my kids or something. It would have been much less embarrasssing.

I have only recently heard the term "sidewalk alum". I think of "bandwagon fan", when I hear the term. Folks that go to a lot of effort, like doing internet research to know the team or buy tickets are not bandwagon/sidewalk fans.

Folks that "root" for a team b/c it is the popular thing to do and don't really follow or support the team otherwise seem to deserve those monikers.

My wife tells the story of when she moved to Alabama from Australia during her 9th grade. She was immediately asked "who do you go for?" She was informed that you MUST root for one team or the other. I guess that atttude automatically causes sidewalk fans.

I guess I would be considered a "sidewalk fan" as well. I attended AUM, but I was born and raised wearing orange and blue, however, this was also my choice to stay loyal to AU whether I went there or not. I was accepted to AU, but due to certain circumstances I stayed here at AUM.

I do agree that some of the worst fans, regardless of favored team, are the ones that have never even been to a game or are just a fan because it's the "cool" thing to do. I will say that in my experience, these type of people usually favor the state university.

And I have to say, honestly, I have felt like less of an AU fan than someone who graduated there. Don't know if I should or not, but sometimes it just hits you that you never experienced going to school for the team you cheer for. Thanks for listening, sorry to ramble on..

Found it interesting that tony said willis was an outsider on tubs staff and wouldve been on genes too. Wonder what that means?

8:49 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Alan ...

I take it to mean that Willis was not a BBQ Bunch guy, so he was an outsider to the Tubs crew, and to Chizik, Willis was the holdover Chiz felt like he ultimately needed to retain.

That's how you become a double outsider -- even as an alum. It's the tough side of coaching.

9:10 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Alan,
I would assume that if Willis was considered an outsider on Tubs staff it owuld be because he was not part of the original crew that came from Ole Miss w/Tubs. Willis was hired in 03 (I think). As for being and outsider on Chizik's staff... might be because he would have been the only holdover from the previous coach's staff...

That article on Tony Franklin was very interesting. Thanks for pointing it out. He doesn't seem as bitter as he once did. It is also really surprising to see that we were 5-2 with Franklin. It was after Franklin left that the season really turned into a disaster.

If the rumors I hear are ture, Tuberville was justified in getting rid of Franklin, but I still wonder how the season would have turned out if Franklin would have remained.

I know many believe Franklin isn't a good coach. I am not of that opinion. Just like there is team chemistry, there is staff chemistry. In this case, the chemistry caused an explosion. It doesn't necessarily mean there was a specific ingredient to blame. It just means that it was a bad combination.

9:15 PM
Blogger Jet said...

It was combination of a gas leak and a hand grenade with the pin pulled.

9:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I really think a lot of what went on was because of Tuberville's lack of offensive knowledge. He knew he needed a change, but I am not so sure he understood the magnitude of the change he was signing up for. The is likely his and Franklin's fault.

There were indications early in the season that they weren't on the same page. Tuberville kept saying we would still be a running team. Franklin would say we were going to pass to set up the run.

I do think Malzahn presents an offense that is similar to Franklin's, but hopefully we will have the chemistry on the offensive coaching staff. I also hope they will continue to let Ziemba eat donuts.

Miller, like you I am trying to get back into going to the gym. I am not really an early morning person, but I know at one time I loved going to the gym early and often. If you can make it a couple of weeks it really gets easier.

My philosophy is always to set my goals low. I try to do 30 minutes on the treadmill every day, no matter what. I don't care how fast I go on the treadmill. It really doesn't matter. The more you do it, the faster you will go. You inevitably want to get more in.

I did it without a partner, but I found reading while on the treadmill worked well for me. I am not what you would call an athlete. I do what I can do and not one bit more. If I find myself thinking of stopping early, I just slow down a little. If I get bored, I speed it up a bit. Typically I also try to speed it up as much as I can during the last five minutes, but it depends on how I feel.

Getting sick is what got me out of going to the gym regularly and I am trying to convince myself to go back. I went Saturday, but not today. At one point I would go in as many as 5 times in a day and it felt great.

Prowler, that is an excellent question. My guess is that Chizik will only be a long time solution if he is able to stablize his staff, namely Malzahn. If the OC, Luper, and Troop stick with him, he could be around for a while. I think this staff has potential, but there is a very good chance Malzahn will come up looking like a genius and be off to a head coaching position.

Steve, I agree with you. I know that things don't always work out like you think they will, but I really think Malzahn will be great as well as Trooper and Luper.

As JG has said many times before, alot of these guys are right on the cusp of being sought for head coaching jobs and other high positions. If everything goes well they will be in high demand and it could be difficult to find comparable replacements. Not exactly a horrible situation to be in, but possible nonetheless.

D.Miller, if things go well I wouldn't change, but we've all seen stranger things happen. I just know quite a few people that were under the impression that this was going to be a temporary thing regardless. I just hope that the powers that be don't screw a good thing up...if it turns out being good, that is.

I could see gus tearing it up and taking off with trooper being the next oc. Getting way ahead of myself there, but that's how I hope it plays out.

It's all on the menu. Blackened redfish over dirty rice (the dirty rice will make you whoop somebody). Shrimp Creole over smoked gouda grits, too. Turtle soup will be my breakfast in the morning. Topped with a boiled egg and some cream sherry. Wish i could blawg it at work, maybe i'll take some pics or something.

Jet- How are the crowds at Anytime Fitness. I've thought about joining Planet Fitness, but everytime I drive by it looks like everyone and their grandma is there...kinda understandable for $10/month.

I'm gonna have to see me a lil "tearin up" before i worry bout any coaches leaving. Can't wait to see what he puts on the field, though. I believe in CGM and have set the bar high for my expectations.

I pay for 2 of us ... and it's 50 a month, I think. I'm not sure for one ... it's a 24/7 place, which is good.

I was fortunate enough to be at the women's game today and let me just say that there were more AU fans there than UAT. Those ladies put a hurtin on the Tide that I thoroughly enjoyed. And Jay, I met your wife! I saw her before tipoff. She had a HABOTN shirt on so I naturally had to say hi. Keep doing what you're doing on here. It's appreciated. War Eagle!

Not to hijack a question, but Big Love is consistently awesome. I say before it is over, Nikki takes Roman down. Love the future number 4. Sorry for the intrusion Monica and Steve. Jet, keep mrs. jet company and enjoy the best show on TV.

You're absolutely right, depressed and hijacking is always welcome. It really is the best writing in television. A very close second is Mad Men on AMC.

I LOVE the 4th wife candidate. I thought Niki and the DA were going to engage in some flirting. Was I just imagining the tension between them?

Monica, with Nikki involved I can't tell if it was flirting or simply how far she would go to help Roman. What about the relationship between Sarah and Ben? That one has me a little worried. Is it just close brother-sister love or something ...else?

Big Love was fantastic. I am beginning to really like Nikki and the look on Roman's face after he took the tumble was priceless.

For a while there I thought Nikki might decide to testify against Roman, but I was wanting Roman out of jail anyway. Somehow Roman needs to get Albert sent to jail for some serious man lovin.

On the gym question, I found that keeping a rigid schedule is important at least at first until you're in the habit. I'm on an commuter train so my schedule is pretty much set and I don't vary it. I ride in in my sweats and the gym is at work. I get in 30-40 minutes and shower there. It's a great way to get the day started.

I like the elliptical for aerobics. There's almost no impact and you get some upper body movement. I've also recently started with a rowing machine. I do 2 days a week with weights (1 upper, 1 lower). Vary your routine in gym, not the time you go.

I would think it would be harder to get started doing 3 days a week than going everyday. It would be easier to put off if it's not an everyday thing.

On the gym question, gatiger has been setting the clock for either 4:30 or 5:00 for quite some time now for the sole purpose of getting up and doing the morning run. As much as I hate it, the early morning is really the only time of day that works with my schedule considering a 2 year old in the house. I've also learned that if you're going to run many, many miles on a treadmill that you should spend more then $1,000 for it and apparently $650 is not quite sufficient. So, on the really cold days I do come to the office gym and get my running done here and shower afterwards. On nice days, I'll run at home then ride the bicycle into the office and shower. After all this time of running, I still don't like it. I don't like it when I'm about to start it and I don't like it while I'm doing it. But, when I'm finished I'm always glad I did it.

So, I guess my point is that you just have to force yourself to make the committment and stick with it. You'll be glad you did. Eventually.

7:43 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

GA, I've tried to do the treadmill thing and as a former track guy I have no aversion to running in general, but man the treadmill is the devil. I admire your perseverance.

7:48 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Wow, I'm surrounded by exercise fanatics. I sure wish I was one, but alas, I have no self-discipline in that regard. If I hate it, I'm just not going to do it. And I do not like exercise done just for that purpose.

7:59 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

THT, I enjoy playing two sports, Tennis and basketball. So I justify weightlifting by telling myself if I reach my goalsm I will be better at both sports. Therefore I'm encouraged by my uber competitive nature to be in the gym. I love it when I trick myself.

8:04 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Seanz - I dislike running period, and I really dislike it on the treadmill. But, there are some days (such as last week) where the weather is just too uncooperative in my opinion so treadmill is my fallback. This week will be nice, so I'll get 100% of the running done outside. I didn't mind the treadmill too much during football season since it was located in my cave with a clear line to the big screen. This week should be a good one to allow me to run outside and bike into work at least 3 days with the long run on Saturday on the local Greenway.

You're my hero GaTiger. I wouldn't dare get on a bike in the Metro Atlanta area. Not even for money.

8:08 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I enjoy football, roller hockey, and skiing. Unfortunately, those are not the typical sports played in this area. When I lived near Atlanta there was a roller hockey rink near us for about a year and that was a blast. That was also 14 years ago :-(
I'm sure I'd enjoy the occasional ski trip or summer vacation hike more if I'd get in shape first, but so far I've survived... knock on wood.

The DC area is great for biking. Time and weather are the killers here. I'd love to get more of my exercise on the bike but it would be too irregular if I tried to use it for my primary activity.

THT, it really is worth it. I have so much more energy since I started working out regularly. You'll feel much better and once you start you'll find it hard to stop.

8:14 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

So what, I guess we're officially on coach watch between AU basketball games?

8:22 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Seanz - I'll be your hero but I will not be your huckleberry. My ride to and from work really isn't that bad. It's less than 6 miles for one thing. For another, I typically leave so early in the morning (5:30 or so) that I have very little traffic to bother me. I'm only on a stretch of about 1.5 miles in the afternoon that has any traffic to speak of so if it's really bad then I'll be a scofflaw and ride on the sidewalk since that stretch does not have a bike lane.

Now, if I weren't living in a norteastern suburb of ATL, I probably wouldn't consider riding the bike. Even though it did make a tremendous difference last summer. Instead of paying $4+ per gallon to fill up a Tahoe a few times a month, I reduced that to maybe 1 fillup every 5 weeks.

8:23 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

yes I remember the $4 gas very well, I also remember when there wasn't any gas...I made a conscious decision to move within a mile of my place of employment when I moved to Atlanta and I was breathing easy that whole time.

Jet, Re: Turbo Prop's FB status. Does that imply he has faith in Tyrik, or that he has been appointed Tyrik's "body double" for qualifying tests?

Tar Heel (aka Dr. HABOTN) ... Turbo is a "standardized test consultant." The body double part will be difficult as he is 5-5, 130.
