Coach catalog: Trooper Taylor and Ted Roof

Hey everyone. In my continued pursuit to bring you information you can get nowhere else -- even if it's pointless -- I now will share my thoughts about some of the Tigers' new football coaches.

I haven't met Tommy Thigpen. I still don't have a feel for Jeff Grimes.

I'll get through a few today. I'll augment as we move along.

TROOPER TAYLOR
  • Job: Offensive assistant (wideouts)

  • Age: 39

  • Previous job: Offensive assistant at Oklahoma State

  • Scouting report: He's a cheerful guy. Several times, I've happened upon him in the Athletic Complex and he's just singing to himself. He's a salesman -- always shakes hands and has something to say. High energy guy. He always seems like he's on a caffeine buzz. He's hilarious to watch with recruits. Taylor and fellow assistant Curtis Luper basically double team these guys. Taylor cuts up and Luper plays the my friend here is crazy role. Taylor uses a full-body laugh when he does. It reminds me of the way guys laugh in the NBA ... with arms and legs going.

  • Best quote so far: (asked how important recruiting is to his job security) "You'll be planting fruit for a living really fast. I don't want to be on the grapes. I like doing the football thing, myself."

TED ROOF
  • Job: Defensive coordinator

  • Age: 45

  • Previous job: Defensive coordinator at U. Minnesota

  • Scouting report: You never know where he's coming from. He seems pensive at times, yet he'll crack enough jokes to keep him from being perceived as studious. I was surprised to see that he's only a few years older than Taylor -- they seem separated by far more than six years. Roof is old school. He clearly has been groomed by men who see football as a test of mental and physical fortitude. I don't foresee Roof being a big player on the recruiting scene. To be fair, I have a similar forecast for offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. I get the sense that Roof busted his butt "meeting the people" during his days at head coach at Duke (2002-07), but he doesn't seem inclined to do that now. It looks like strategy is his primary concern. He will be recruiting in Georgia.

  • Best quote so far: (asked if he'll be head-butting players) "I might be the only guy in Atlantic Coast Conference history to get either a personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as a player, assistant coach and a head coach. Does that answer your question?"

  3. Jay G dropps the bomb on 600 ...

I remember Trooper from the 2004 SEC Championshp Game ... he was stoked the whole game on the sideline.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 575 posts and JGT starts another thread.

Seriously, I will hereafter see Trooper as Mr. T

    ReplyDelete
  5. Can't wait to see which AU hat he wears backward on game-day. Hopefully, the classic interlocking AU.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Depressed ... I'm seeing a white cap with the AU logo turned around backwards.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The cap, of course, not the logo.

    Misplaced modifier bug bit me.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jet, that would be a great choice. Trooper should go after a cut of gross receipts from future AU hat sales. He can be a trend-setter. More importantly, I think he will ba a hell of a coach for the Tigers. I am pumped.

  9. Harrison, Vortex has good burgers...or did the one time I went. I ate at the one in Little 5 points.

    ReplyDelete
  10. We are heading there this weekend. also going to cavs/hawks game to watch King James

    ReplyDelete
  11. From the other thread ... AUMom - I suppose you are aware that the golfer is Boo Weekly. Boo Radley was a character in To Kill a Mockingbird, of which I have a signed copy by the way. It's because I'm special. Don't hate me.

    ReplyDelete
  12. a coach getting a personal foul--that's worth seeing!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Harrsion you working? Me and Smitty are going to have beers at Locos.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Phred ...

I have a signed copy as well ... a treasured possession.

    ReplyDelete
  15. i have a signed copy of "oh the places you'll go" by dr. seuss. except it wasn't signed by dr. seusss--it was signed by my boss. ergo, quite lame.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yep Will. We actually have inventory tonight will be here until 10 pm. suck-o.
leaving to go to atlanta tomorrow. i'll have to party with you guys next week

    ReplyDelete
  17. Smitty loves Loco's

    ReplyDelete
  18. harrison, you work too hard. i propose a habotn commune, situated near a river for bathing purposes. everyone would be screened for puppets, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  19. scott. i really don't work too hard. I just work long hours.Three 12 hour days per week. Out of 12 hours i probably work 7 hours

    ReplyDelete
  20. Any Hottie tryin to smuggle puppets is immediately stoned, or banhammered, whatever the crowd wants.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What if the crowd wants death by stick?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Then that's what they get. we have a real democracy here, unless Jay G. overrules. then it's not a democracy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i'm doing 3 twelves myself. unfortuanately, it's on top of my other stuff. death by stick is acceptable. i suggest that they be dunked, first, to determine if they are witch puppets (or which puppets they are).

    ReplyDelete
  24. Anonymous6:22 PM

    What if you like puppets?

Not saying I do, just what if.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous6:23 PM

    Do marionettes count?

    ReplyDelete
  26. i don't know anybody that likes puppets

    ReplyDelete
  27. puppets have been ruled evil by the queen. since this is apparently a democracy, though, the queen is more of a figurehead. decide what you want.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Phred, I knew exactly who Boo Radley is (or was). I pull for imaginary figures, real golfers, and little old ladies who play Tiger.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That's why the shanks comment was so funny.

    ReplyDelete
  30. FAMILY GUY RULES!!...just thought ya'll should know..

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am a little surprised that Jay thinks neither coordinator will be heavily involved in recruiting. Is this a common set-up at most schools? Muschamp is the only coordinator in recent Auburn history that I can remember being an active presence on the recruiting trail. Roof sounds like he is content to be a DC for the long- term. Malzahn, I doubt he will be very content as a long-term OC.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am not sure what to think of any of these coaches yet. I do like the old school description of Roof. I am glad Trooper isn't a coordinator. I like my coordinators serious.

    ReplyDelete
  33. My daughter has a signed Shel Silverstein....what a freak that dude is.

    Yes, Family Guy does rule.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The massive post count on last thread was truly impressive...I guess you never know when it's going to take off.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My deepest apologies. Should have used "was" concerning the (evidently) late Shel Silverstein.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Shel Silverstein was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  37. ehyou ...

it was michael's fault ... he got us wound up ... we got sidetracked on Walker, Texas Ranger and some other useless subjects.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It was my fault. I accept blame. I'm a dumbass.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I knew it!!!

    Michael IS Tony Franklin!

  60. Good Morning Hotties.

Tough day yesterday for Auburn Spring sports.

Baseball team got slaughtered by fifth ranked Florida State 14-5.. They move to the Plains today for game 3 of the four game series.

No. 5 Auburn gymnastics lost a heartbreaker to No.11 ranked Bama. I hear the Bamzo team used 14 year olds, though.

Softball started off their west coast tourney with a split of the two games they played. They'll see two more opponents today befor facing host Cal St-Fulerton tomorrow.

Men's Basketball will attempt to stay relevant and move two games over .500 today at Miss State.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

Senator - Dr Habotn would never swear by false gods; therefore, Hippocratic oath does not apply to Dr H.

  76. Anytime ..

J-Z and I were chatting on FAcebook, and he shared something w/ me about our crack athletic department (or our athletic department on crack) ...

Huge hoops game next weekend vs. LSU, and we've already given away 3,000 seats to Scouts for popcorn rewards ... you gotta believe only a handful will show.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Mon- I really enjoy all of JGT's reports, too. However, I didn't want to say so for fear it would insult his opinion of his latest as being "pointless."
    JGT writings =antonym of pointless

    ReplyDelete
  78. Doc - Never hold back a compliment!

Jet - Are you being an info tease?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Nah ... J-Z and I were yapping this a.m ... continuation of a discussion last night ... the j-Z's and the jets are likely to meet next saturday for din din.

he told me about the popcorn scout day this a.m. ... reminded me of the time in 1999 we yanked the tickets away from the scouts because we needed the tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  80. FYI Doc - I don't need Lola to track you down, mister!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I bet the Jet's and the JZ's have a great time together.

    ReplyDelete
  82. There we go ... a little chippiness on a Saturday morning.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Jet- That wasn't chippiness on my part. You just like to stir trouble among hotties. tsk tsk tsk

    ReplyDelete
  84. this board has lacked the Mon chippiness the past few days...

    ReplyDelete
  90. Mon- yes. FB account deactivated. Tried to do the same here but just couldn't figure out how to make the acct go away. So, being the compassionate Dr Habotn that I am, I gave THT a dose of Kevorkian therapy instead. Jay GT provides way to much great information and frequently does so in real-time. HABOTN is simply far too good for Dr H to stay away.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I've got to go pack. Mon - here's the only clue you and Lola will get. Daily forecast is rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, and rain. Highs in the 50s. With that forecast, I'm confident no one will come looking!

    ReplyDelete
  92. OKU IN AUBURN
Lincoln (Neb.) East running back David Oku has been to Auburn on at least two occasions. He camped on the Plains before his junior season and then returned in late January for an official visit. Apparently, the two visits weren't enough because he's back, according to Rivals.

    ReplyDelete
  93. business or pleasure travel?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hag I'm worried about you if Oku signs some place other than Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  95. sounds suspiciously like seattle, doc.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I've discovered another FANTASTIC use for Lola. Yesterday I was driving along the North and South branches of the Potomac River. Greg and I love to fish in that part of WV. I found some spots we had not fished before. I pulled over to make notes so we could find our way back, but Lola said, "Monica! Use me!" All I had to do was a little "Where am I" and save the coordinates. Technology is hawt.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I know what I am ... I'm a man ... and so was Lola.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yeah Monica I would be heartbroken

sunny and warm here. matchplay going on up the road.

scott, I've been watching it on t.v. That course is so beautiful. It's so different from what I'm used to seeing, but I love it. I couldn't play there. I'd be in the cacti the whole time! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm not a jealous person.... but I am extremely jealous of the pro golfers right now, they get to play in beautiful weather, on meticulously groomed courses...
and here i sit, just wanting to go play on (what amounts to) a cow pasture in the rain, but I can't, cause it's too wet...

    ReplyDelete
  106. Anonymous11:53 AM

yeah, we had a tee time for tomorrow, but I cancelled it because I know it will still be too wet (and cold).

    ReplyDelete
  107. I have been playing well lately... I need to be out on a course somewhere...

    ReplyDelete
  108. Anonymous11:55 AM

I'm jealous. I never play well, but I still love it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. well in relative terms of course...

    ReplyDelete
  110. Anonymous11:59 AM

Oh, I'm sure you play better than me. Out of my 100+ shots, 5 of them might be good. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  111. Good Saturday morning to you Hotties. So far, the gatiger weekend sans female intrusion is going well. The tigercub and I went to our favorite place for breakfast. When finished, we entertained our former fellow diners by jumping, stomping, kicking, splashing and any sort of playing you can imagine which might take place in the many water puddles on the sidewalk and parking lot area. We could never have gotten away with such outlandish behavior if mrs. gatiger had been around. We'd have each gotten a serious whoopin and/or stern talking to right there in front of everyone. I like my plan much better than hers.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Oku is back?

That story is odd to me. Why would B-Matt or Jeffrey Lee not know about that? Did you notice that they're relying on one of the Rivals.com national guys on that story?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Anonymous12:01 PM

Good for you, gatiger! Did you get pics of the event so you could show mrs. gatiger what a fantastic time you had?

    ReplyDelete
  114. I am in the mid to upper 80's right now...
I'm convinced if I were playing on a better course I'd shoot better.
A better lie leads to better shots, right? When you're teeing off from an unlevel t-box and putting through bare spots, there's not much hope.

    ReplyDelete
  115. luv, it's a beautiful course. haven't played it yet(green fees=$225). out here, "in the rough" has a whole new meaning. last year's matchplay saw woods caught up in a swarm of killer bees.

    ReplyDelete
  116. JGT, one site says he is in AU, the other site says he is still in Nebraska... who's right? who's relying on bad sources? who knows?

Bo knows... he just ain't tellin'

    ReplyDelete
  117. Anonymous12:05 PM

Have you ever made up to the Bham area and played at Ballantrae in Pelham? BEAUTIFUL course, imo. We love it there.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Anonymous12:05 PM

scott, YIKES! I'd be afraid of rattlesnakes too!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Luv - it's those 5 shots which keep folks like you and I coming back. When I was still in the gump and a member of one of the CC's, I played a great amount of golf and got myself down to what I thought was a very respectable 11 h/c. Now, not so much. The priorities are different now and these days I only manage to play an embarrasingly few times a year. My game reflects the lack of play. When he's a bit older, I'll be taking the boy out with me and forcing him to enjoy it. I used to take my daughter with me and I enjoyed it but she didn't.

Also, no pics but we're regulars there and I'm pretty sure she'll be told about it by some of the staff. There's also the dirty clothes I'll let her wash.

    ReplyDelete
  120. nope, I have never played any of the courses in the B'ham area

sure to change soon, as we're moving up that way in a couple months...

    ReplyDelete
  121. i haven't played much golf in alabama. the cheap course in auburn, the old course at maxwell. my new position has about 1 month of paid time off. i'm hoping to have an extended thanksgiving visit and try out one or two of the rtj courses (and catch the bama game).

    ReplyDelete
  122. and, yes, there are snakes--especially at the matchplay course. it's a very recently developed area ear a nature preserve. there will be rattlers.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Anonymous12:11 PM

gatiger, yes, it is those 5 shots that keep us coming back. Unfortunately, in the summer we play just about every weekend and I still get no better. Oh well.

d.miller, that's right. You're moving to Helena. You must check out Ballantrae and Timberline.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Timberline is the course just off the interstate at Calera... right?
    Where is Ballantrae?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Anonymous12:14 PM

    Tiberline - yes, in Calera.

Ballantrae - in Pelham (it's really more like Alabaster). Just a hop and a skip from Helena.

    ReplyDelete
  126. It's all so bizarre, the Oku story.

Takes some mighty large cojones to think you're bigger than every other 2009 prospect. That's basically what Bryan Brown and Oku are saying with their actions.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Anonymous12:17 PM

and just for kicks, you should try Magnolia Meadows in Colombiana. It's more my speed - just over 3000 total yards. They don't keep it up as well as they should, but it's only $25.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Anonymous12:17 PM

Not that anyone cares what I think, but I don't care where Oku goes as long as it's not Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  129. The house we just had our offer accepted in is in Alabaster (it has a Maylene address, but essentially is in Alabaster)

I'm gonna have to find a new golf partner when I get up there...

    ReplyDelete
  130. Anonymous12:20 PM

    I agree, Jay G.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Orsen Charles is doing this as well....

    ReplyDelete
  132. full agreeance JGT...

There's something very odd about the Oku deal...
Where are the kids parents in all of this?

    ReplyDelete
  133. Anonymous12:23 PM

A coworker lives in Grande View, which is in Maylene.

Hey, another good course is Highland Park in Bham. We play there a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I think Els likes the desert.... just went from one bunker to another...

    ReplyDelete
  135. Anonymous12:23 PM

jhag, I may be, but Auburn doesn't need his drama.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Miller - what course gets your golfing $ in the gump?

    ReplyDelete
  137. Terrell Pryor wasn't much drama for OSU this year, he did this as well turned out pretty well for the buckeyes..once we get him here the military staff will straighten his ass up

    ReplyDelete
  138. how does he like it there, luv?
This house is in the Sterling Gate Cedar Grove subdivision

    ReplyDelete
  139. Cink and I were in the same Sunday School class for awhile. That makes me famous or something, right?

    ReplyDelete
  140. gatiger,
I have been playing mostly at River Run (Now Tallapoosa Lakes) because a buddy of mine has a membership out there.
I have played Lagoon Park, Cottonwood, and a couple of the RTJ courses in Prattville.

    ReplyDelete
  141. gatiger, That should at least get you tickets to the Masters...

    ReplyDelete
  142. Anonymous12:32 PM

    d. miller, I think she and her husband like it. Sterling Gate is one of the newer subdivisions in that area, right?

    ReplyDelete
  143. ooops.... my bad...
Yeah, it's fairly new... less than 10 years old I think.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Anonymous12:36 PM

:-) There are several nice, newer subdivisions in that area. Just be aware that traffic is terrible getting to and from them during rush hour because of it (and the dang railroad tracks). We live in Pelham and love it.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Anonymous12:38 PM

gatiger, can you get me Stuie's autograph? ;-) JK!

    ReplyDelete
  146. I knew it would be bad coming out of Helena... hopefully it won't be quite as bad out of Maylene....

    ReplyDelete
  147. Miller - I killed a duck on what was then #17 at Kolomi. My playing partners to this day (10+ years later) still rag me about it. I felt awful, but not as awful as the duck.

You might think that knowing Cink would get me Masters tickets, but so far not so much. Also, my boss used to be a Caddy at Augusta National and he goes every year. Does he take me? Nope. So far, that's still a line item on my punch list of things to do.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Tuscon - you folks hiring? I wouldn't mind having 30 days paid time off.

    ReplyDelete

  159. Alas, my time here today is coming to an end. The cub is waking from his nap. Trains, trucks and Mickey Mouse will likely occupy the rest of my daylight and early evening time.

    Peace out.

    ReplyDelete
  160. GaTiger takes this daddy thing way too seriously ... slip the little nipper some Benedryl, and -- voila! -- nap time has been extended by four hours.

    ReplyDelete

  164. DMiller ... don't know if you commented at the time but when the Limpin' Lebos took on the Mercer Bears, which team did you support?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Mon,
I didn't realize until now it was a problem... plans are underway...

Jet, that was tough... as it usually is when they meet on the baseball diamond... I wore an Orange AU shirt under my black Mercer shirt, with my orange AU visor...

    ReplyDelete
  166. i'm starving.... time to go pick up some Chappy's

    ReplyDelete
  167. DMiller ... I always recommend the Chicken Salad Supreme.

    ReplyDelete
  168. In basketball, why does the announcer say the shot is "partially blocked?"

In football, it has meaning as to whether the ball crosses the line of scrimmage. In basketball, it has no bearing. It is either blocked, or it's not.

See, this is what happens on a boring Saturday with no substantive discussions ... c'mon folks ... save me from myself.

    ReplyDelete
  169. What is Chappy's?

    ReplyDelete
  170. patriots just traded matt cassel to the chiefs. i wonder if croyle can work his way back to starter.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Chappy's = Deli with 3 locations in Gump, one in Auburn.

    It's OK.

    Croyle = Clipboard in Perpetuity

Luv....the quickest, easiest way to lower a golf score to sub 90's is to improve the short game. Take a couple of short game lessons and commit several multi hour practice sessions. The RTJ courses have good practice facilities.

Learn to rely on the short game, take pressure off the long game and then improve course management. The long game will improve with less pressure.

  173. Hoopie speaketh truth.

Sadly, I ignore truth on the golf course.

  174. I don't care how much money Jim Calhoun makes, but I'm tired of the TV media pimps feeling like they have to prop him up.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I miss watching JJ Redick at duke :(

    ReplyDelete
  176. Jet, chicken salad supreme is exactly what I got... on a croissant, no tomato.

Hoopie is dead on... sadly my putting has been failing me lately. But, my driver has been getting better.

    ReplyDelete
  177. DMiller, our similarities are amazingly ... similar.

I have them hold the tomato as well.

    ReplyDelete
  178. ate half now... save the other half for dinner...

yes, it's uncanny how similar our similarities are...

    ReplyDelete
  179. OK ... that's where it ends ... I've never "saved" a half a sandwich.

  180. Can someone explain this weather we're having? This morning we we having tornadoes and flooding... Right now it is 70 degrees and absolutely beautiful outside. But, we're now under a winter storm watch.

WTF? (stands for What the FAQ?)

    ReplyDelete
  181. I usually don't either... but the wife decided she didn't want to go out to eat tonight (like we had planned)... so I had to take certain measures in order to ensure that I would have something available for dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Speaking of FAQ ... maybe Jay G is working on the HABOTN FAQs. Ha.

This has to be an excruciatingly frustrating time for him.

I know what's for dinner ... our school athletic booster club has a dinner and draw down (10k total prizes, 5k largest prize). Maybe I'll win.

    ReplyDelete
  183. I bet JGT is playing video games...

I would be if the Ogilvy/Cink match wasn't so close...

    ReplyDelete
  184. Tornadoes in auburn today huh..?

    ReplyDelete
  185. Yeah ... Jhag ... I think one hit out near The Bottle ... north of town.

I saw the photos on TV, looked like Tuscaloosa after it hit.

Jet....It's always more fun to grip it and rip it, than exhibit a great short game. I learned golf while living in So Fla in the mid-80's. I lost a lot of $$$ to old creaky-kneed guys that hit it short and straight and made all sandies and greenies.

My neighbor (scratch golfer) finally convinced me that I wasn't playing baseball and that homeruns weren't possible.

    ReplyDelete
  187. What just happened to force Paul Casey to try that ridiculously impossible drop on the bank of the bunker?

since the mrs. is studying... I am on full mute and don't have a clue what is going on...

    ReplyDelete
  188. someone recommend me a good (affordable) pair of headphones I can use while wifey is studying, so I don't have to sit in utter silence...

    ReplyDelete
  189. I'm sure y'all know that B'ham may get 3-5 inches of snow. wow
