The List of New Football Players

WEDNESDAY MORNING
Post No. 1,033

Hey everyone. It's National Signing Day. You know what that means? It's ON.

THE LATEST
(11:30) DE Terrance Coleman, WR LaVoyd James and DL Nick Fairley -- all of Williamson High fame -- have signed with Auburn. That bumps the Tigers' 2009 class to 28 players.

OTHER THINGS OF INTEREST
  • (11:18 a.m.) DT Jamar Travis of W.S. Neal High in (East) Brewton has signed with Auburn.

  • (10:40 a.m.) LB Harris Gaston of Bessemer Academy has signed with Auburn. He'll emerge as an outside guy with power.

  • (10:25 a.m.) ATH Robert Cooper of Daphne High has signed with Auburn. He is expected to "gray shirt" this season and join the team in January.

  • (10:10 a.m.) TB Dontae Aycock and DB Taikwon Paige have signed with the Tigers.

  • (9:55 a.m.) DE/DT Nosa Eguae of suburban Ft. Worth, Texas, has signed. Read about him here: Truth sets Texas DE free - to sign with Auburn

  • (9:30 a.m.) WR Anthony Gulley of Brantley High has signed.

  • (9:25 a.m.) WR DeAngelo Benton of Bastrop, La. (also of Hargrave Military Academy) has signed with the Tigers. I consider that a completely crazy development. He's supposed to be a big-time wideout, but he hasn't played organized ball since November 2007. Either way, this is a significant NSD coup.

  • (9:15 a.m.) WR Emory Blake of Austin, Texas, has signed with Auburn. That is a major development because Blake was the most important "bubble" prospect on the Tigers' list.

With Blake and now DeAngelo Benton signing on with Auburn today, it's clear that offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and his offense has captured the imagination of offensive prospects.

  • Here is your up-to-the-minute list of signees:
    • LB Eltoro Freeman (already enrolled)
    • TB Onterio McCalebb (already enrolled)
    • TE Philip Lutzenkirchen
    • LB Donald "Dee" Ford
    • DB Daren Bates
    • OL Andre Harris
    • WR Travante Stallworth
    • QB Clint Moseley
    • DB Reggie Taylor
    • RB Brandon Jacobs
    • DB Izauea Lanier
    • LB Jonathan Evans
    • QB Tyrik Rollison
    • OL John Sullen
    • DT Josh Jackson (of Gainesville, Ga. -- new to the scene)
    • WR Emory Blake
    • DB Demond Washington
    • WR Anthony Gulley
    • WR DeAngelo Benton
    • DE/DT Nosa Eguae
    • DB Taikwon Paige
    • TB Dontae Aycock
    • ATH Robert Cooper
    • LB Harris Gaston
    • DT Jamar Travis
    • DE Terrance Coleman
    • WR LaVoyd James
    • DT Nick Fairley

I definitely don't believe recruiting was responsible for what happened last year. It seems that we have fair weather fans that believe one bad season erases 10 years of success. I guess it is a matter of opinion. And as for loving Tuberville, I wouldn't say that. I just find that many have absolutely no clue about the quality of a coach.

Brad Bradshaw likely to be awarded the prestigious Recruiting Tool of 2009Award. He's a darkhorse candidate, as the award typically goes to the college coaches recruting HS players, not HS coaches making idiotic comments on a nat'l stage for their own advancement.

My money's on BB.

I don't think we ever had Oku, although I think we were in the mix. I have to agree that if I were him, I don't think I would go to Auburn. We have signed enough RB talent.

I'm by far not a fair weather fan, but that's ok Steve.

I was calling for people to question Tub long before we went 5-7 last year.

Tuberville was a good coach. He did a good job. Not great, but good. He had his time 2004 and he didn't capitalize on it and we started a slow decline after that.

Blogger Unknown said...

As all of you know, I don't believe in starting a freshman at QB, but other positions are a different story. I think Malzahn will now have the players to make his offense work. A little more depth on the offensive line would be great, but you have to think there will be a world of difference between last year's offense and this years.

My concern will be on defense. We have the talent to be great. From what I read, Roof isn't the level of DC we are accustomed to, but Chizik may be the best DC we have had since Wayne Hall, so things are looking up.

11:05 AM

I admit i get worked up over recruiting, but like i said a few weeks ago, go pull last years Athlon or Lindys and see how many of those guys played. Recruiting is tough because its a fact 25 recruits dwindle down to 10 after four years. They fall by the way side of injuries, transfers, grades, quiting or whatever else. It will be interesting out of this class to see in four years who sticks around and is remembered.

Franklin is much better than some think. He will be successful. He just didn't fit in with this staff. I do think he has a lot of growing up to do.

ESPN's team rankings are kind of weird. They don't have us in the top 25. They have Bama at 8th. Their team rankings seem totally different that scout or rivals.

Michael,

That's the problem with all recruiting services. They rank teams based on total points. So a team like Auburn ranks 10 in total points (3390 points, 28 commits) but Florida ranks 14 in total points (3296 points, 17 commits). Even though their average player is about a star higher in the rankings.

11:35 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Fairley is a huge get ... Willis apparently had been instructed to get him away from us ... Muschamp has told folks that Fairley is the real deal out of this group, from what I've been told.

Oku would be the cherry, but all in all, this is very impressive class for the Chiz and Delta Force Z.

Hey Jay G & Kathy - just cause the new guy running AAPL is from Auburn doesn't mean you have to go all "open command" on us!

Blogger Kathy said...

Lowcounty, once you go Mac, you won't go back!

Blogger AUBigCat said...

I figured Jones was gone when we took Josh Johnson

Kathy, I've heard that, but I just can't bring myself to cross over. Well, except for my iPod.

Jay, thanks for the excellent recruiting coverage. As usual, if you read it in a HABOTN blog, it is true.

This was a turrible day to be busy at work. Congrats and thanks coaches for a job well done.

The 2 WRs are huge. Now if we can just trade a short WR and an Athl for 2 OL, life would be perfect.

Kathy,

I need a gov't bailout for a Mac.

Blogger AUBigCat said...

Jay I just reviewed your "issues" list and noticed that Kendall Kelly was not on there. I guess that means my pining is in vain, huh?

LOL @ Hoopie.

I like the trade idea.

Blogger Nooj4AU(qualify tyrick!) said...

i think we get oku....randle would be nice but not happening..maybe kelly suprise..doubt it, we are probably finished

11:56 AM
Blogger Howard said...

Hoopie, you are right on. I think we have good talent at OL for Gus' offense, but it sure would be nice to fill the stable a little.

11:59 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a couple of lower ranked commits later in the day. There are often recruits that are conditional, meaning if someone else don't sign, they get offers.

12:00 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

So Jay G, we got Blake, Benton, and Aycock on the your "Issue Two" list. Maybe Oku later. Not too shabby.

Dre on ESPNU coming up.

Blogger AUBigCat said...

A Kelly suprise and Oku would send this class through the roof! I'd start making my plans for the SECCG.

Kathy, I think this is a strong class ... and likely an upgrade over where it was headed prior to Dec. 1.

That video of Lutzen... throwing the ball back in bounds is incredible.

Jay G, great article regarding Nosa on the front page. Thanks! I really like that kid.

12:11 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

Steve, that was a great highlight. Lutz will be great in Gus' offense.

12:11 PM
Blogger Will said...

Do I dare even mention B. Brown? When is he expected to sign?

12:13 PM

Will, I think Brown is in a couple of weeks.

Has bama asked KK to greyshirt??

12:18 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

If KK signs with Auburn, and that's a big IF, that will be Bama's story!

12:20 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

is the "big surprise" rumor still alive? if so, any ideas?

12:26 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

If Dre Kirkpatrick signs anywhere but Alabama I'll........

12:28 PM
Blogger hehateme said...

Harrison, small chance for another surprise, but if it happens, you need to take cover!

12:29 PM
Blogger astatguy said...

IMHO we already have great skill. I'd like the "surprise" to be a big ugly.

12:29 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Harrison there's a chance Kendall Kelly goes somewhere other than Alabama.

12:29 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Binoba, I saw the same thing on the JustinTV chat...I doubt that to be true...

12:29 PM

Seanz:

I was told by a GCHS coach that KK had a no strings attached offer from Alabama.....

Whether that is true or not, I don't know.

12:31 PM
Blogger BinOBA said...

Word is KK has a sports hernia and has been asked to greyshirt at bama.

12:33 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Faker, I am 98 percent sure he signs with your squad.

I'm stoked thus far, all else is gravy at this point. Great job on surpassing our expectations on the recruiting class CGC !!

BinOBA:

I agree...Chizik and his staff have done a great job in a small amount of time on the recruiting trail.

I don't care what anybody says, Tubs was headed toward a 20-22 ranked class. The only reason it was ranked so high to begin with is because y'all had so many early commitments.

I expect Chizik and company to end up around 15...Good job.

12:37 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

Haven't been through all the posts- -is it accurate that Bryce Brown signed with Miami?

12:38 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

This has been a satisfying day for me. I think Chizik did a fantastic job considering the time restraints he had and all of the controversy surrounding his hire. Hopefully he can prove to be a good hire on the field as well.

12:39 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I've seen no news of Brown signing anywhere. All reports point to him not signing anywhere today.

its not who get to comm early.. its who you keep on the last day.

At the end of the day we will have our team.... and I believe
...

Way to go CGC.. now start figuring out how you keep all of your asst. coaches next year...
