More from T. Taylor (not the Toolman) and T. Roof

Hey everyone. The HABOTN, along with other credible news-gathering organizations, spent time Thursday discussing football and life in general with Auburn assistant coaches Trooper Taylor and Ted Roof (aka Rüf).

I provided an overview yesterday. Here is another dose of less gripping comments, though you may enjoy them more. We'll see.

TROOPER TAYLOR SPEAKS

  • On how Auburn's recruiting effort should be better in 2010: "The expectations are always going to be high because I think when you're at a place like Auburn, the expectations should be. When you're going to play in a league where if you don't play your best every week, you're going to get beat. We're going to fit our needs. If that puts us in the top 10 or the top 5, that's good."

  • On Auburn's specific 2010 goals: "We might have four senior offensive linemen (in 2009). Next year, offensive linemen better be a big deal for us. We might have three DBs that are graduating. Whatever that need is, we've got to make sure we're fulfilling that need. I think some schools get in trouble and you'll see them dip off because they'll go and try to get the highest-ranked kid or just the highest-ranked player regardless of position and then you stack them up. You fall short somewhere else."

  • On how esprit de corps affects recruiting: "We watch tape together. I want to know what Ted Roof is looking for when he's looking for a linebacker. What is Tracy (Rocker) looking for when he's looking for a defensive lineman? At most places, most coaches, the offense watches their players and the defense watches theirs. Well, I'm going to recruit a defensive player in my area. I'd better know what (the coach) is looking for. I think those things are important. We have really put our egos in our pocket in being able to do those things."

  • On pursuing (and signing) two-time LSU signee DeAngelo Benton: "I knew his coaches well. We were recruiting another kid from his school and I saw (Benton) working out still. I was like, 'Is that…?' and his coach was like, 'Yeah, that's still him.' I said, 'Well what's he got going?' 'Well he's going back to this school (ie LSU).' I said, 'Oh, he is, huh? Well, let's see if we can do something about that.'"

  • On what Auburn is seeking at wideout: "You can't ever get caught up in your own pride and say: I'm going to go get me a guy that's 6-4 and fits what I'm used to having. Dez Bryant would be different in this offense than anybody else. The things (Gus Malzahn) looks for in this offense is guys that can wiggle and make people miss. That's what we're going to do."

  • On Auburn recruiting more versatile kids with multi-positional backgrounds: "You have to find guys who are not locked in and say: Well, he's a Mike backer. That's all he's going to do is play Mike backer. What if he busts? Now you're stuck with a kid that – you're not going to run him off; he's somebody's family – but you're stuck with a kid that can't play and that doesn't help you. You'll be planting fruit for a living really fast. I don't want to be on the grapes. I like doing the football, myself."

TED ROOF SPEAKS

  • On promising playing time to recruits: "We talk about opportunities. I think you get into some real deals when you start promising kids jobs because if they come to your school you sure don't want them thinking you're out in a living room next year promising their job to somebody else. There will certainly be opportunities and then whatever is earned, players are going to get exactly what they earn."

  • On which players can contribute early in their careers: "I think the closer you are to a football, the tougher it is to play as a freshman. The reaction time is cut down, where if there's a bunch of blades of grass between you and the ball, you've got maybe a better chance of playing as a freshman. Not that it's easier to play away from the ball, but from a reaction standpoint, you've got a little bit more time."

  • On if he'll be headbutting players like Will Muschamp: "I don't know if you'll see that. I got a few more gray hairs than I used to. Maybe 10 years ago you might have seen that."

I'm a little confused about this "recruiting area" thing. So there's a DB in the OC's recruiting area. At what point do both the DC and DB coach step in and participate in the recruiting of that player? It seemed this year, much of the face-to-face recruiting was done by committee. Will this continue, and the "areas" are simply for talent evaluation and deciding who they want to recruit?

Oh, it doesn't bother me if any other post lacks substance, only the first.

Coaches have always been assigned areas. They do not move people in and out for a position player. These coaches have to build and work a territory just like any sales rep. They bring in the position/cordinator to seal the deal.

Do they think it is strong year for O-line recruits in the Alabama for 2010 class. I am just curious because he clearly recognizes, as we do, our need there. He also talks about making a big push in state. Sorry about the confusion.

4:50 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

PeterF- I'm guessing we just seen a minute bit of minutae. JayGT is probably still working on raising the Roof to the thread

4:51 PM
Blogger scott,will not,from tucson said...

i know we've all joked about au's o line--specifically re ziemba's manic compilation of penalty yardage--but aren't they returning bigger and better this year? i don't think they'll be the liability they were last year.

4:52 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

tigercowboy- I'm going to see if RC Luper will assign you to stalk that super OL from Olive Branch, MS who will be in the 2010 class.

4:52 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Tiger, that's beyond me.

I haven't had any conversations with Taylor about the 2010 crop of OL recruits. I don't get the sense -- talking with recruiting gurus -- that it'll be a nutty year for O-linemen.

Auburn better get to work.

4:52 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Peter, based on what I have seen so far Trooper will have the interesting and entertaining quotes. Roof has the others. Someone feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.

4:54 PM
Blogger tigercowboy said...

I believe they will be better next year but there is no depth behind them. I am just thinking are we going to sign a large number from in state and even if there are a large number available in state?

4:54 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Peter, I hope it clear to you now.

4:57 PM
Blogger tigercowboy said...

Maybe I could go and hang out in Olive Branch. Its so large they would probably not notice a new face. I think we need to kick start the OTC (Orange Tiger Club) to combat the REC.

4:57 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

tc- at this point, Scout doesn't show any OL with offers from AU. Offers have been made to Mr. Robinson in Olive Branch, MS and also to a TX OL and a FL OL, the latter not interested in AU.

4:58 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Lee Ziemba is probably the most irreplaceable player on the roster for '09. OT is a disaster waiting to happen.

Bark, those guys trashed me for years. It seems like they're relenting lately, not sure why, and I'm really disappointed in their lack of constancy.

Have a great weekend. Warrrr Eagle to all, including the lurky-one, Criminal Type.

JGT - I get your point about L & M even though I do enjoy listening (sometimes) to their show during football season, I understand your point and I'm glad you put it out there tonight. I'd been curious.

And yes, because you're all curious, the local bike shop did have that nifty jogging stroller AND I even convinced them to sell it to me for $100 less than the marked price. So, gatiger can drive a bargain and close a deal.

You'd better weep for Turbo's future. Other plans which did not include his girlfriend on a Friday night of Valentine's weekend??? In my mind that's one of two things; either it's sheer lunacy (typical given his father), or absolute brilliance in that he's about to put said girlfriend to the curb.

I used to really enjoy the 740 until I realized that they were no account blow hards. I like McKnight and I don't think he was that tough on Jay G. But Longshore, man, he is such a no talent unprofessional poor excuse for anything, it is a miracle he can make the jack he makes doing his same old tired schlock. I wish Jay G would just bust him out every opportunity he has. When McKnight is on by himself, it is a good show, but Longshore is such a buffoon. He reminds me of Boss Vic Koss from the movie, THat Thing You Do

Once he starts losing (and he will) to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, & Auburn, they will run him off with a quickness. His mouth will be used against him by Vol fans at that point. I know a few that are horrified already.

Kiffin reminds me a little of Terry Bowden without the 20-0 start.

You have to be clever with it ...

JGT: "Coach, is there anyone else you are recruiting?"

CHIZZLE: "Why, yes, Jay. We're a bigger underdog than DAVID vs. Goliath or BROWN vs. UConn in hoops on a couple of them, but, I said to our staff this morning, 'OKU -- I mean OK, let's work ourselves until we're crazy enough to end up in BRYCE.'

G'Day all ... Happy Valentines Day to fellow Hotties!

With that said, hope to see y'all at the game this afternoon.

FSJ, I believe you are right, CLK has his job cut out for him and he's not making it an easy trip.

Appropriate day for the HABOTN, Happy Valentine's Day to all the Hotties. I do love this site!!! Only site I come to for all the latest AU news, rumors, and humor!

You guys/gals crack me up.

War Eagle! Let's make it a big win today.

After reading the interviews and comments, I have to believe that the Auburn players are very excited to have this new coaching staff. They are really emphasizing how they are all on the same page. I think Chizik is being very methodical on these last 2 hires. He is a defensive guru, so I have no doubt he will hire some great coaches on that side of the ball as well. I'm anxiously waiting the start of spring practice! In the meantime, I better go get my Saturday cleaning finished before the grandbabies come over. Hopefully I'll be back for the basketball game.

Auburn 2-13 in last 15 games against MSU; outrebounded by an AVERAGE of over 11 rpg during that stretch. Even rebounds in 2 of 13; MSU won rebounding in all others. AU has not outrebounded MSU since at least 2001.

At least they've never had 56 boards against us like they had against UA-T a few years back.

Jay GT- 77-70 MSU? I hope it's that close.

I just realized tickets are $15. Wow. I'd barely be willing to pay that much to watch a good basketball team (like the one 4 miles south of me). No wonder the seats are empty at BEMC.

How many more days til kickoff?

I've been once D Miller. Fondue is a bit of a novelty I guess. Food was fine. There weren't a lot of good ol' boys like me in there - pretty artsy fartsy.

Jay G - Just curious, the pics of the coaches offices are not really what I expected. Will this be a major upgrade when moved to the new facility? Any renditions out there regarding this and will Fortner get 1st choice?

My granny used to take the train from LA to Tybee back in the day (i.e. c1910). It was the place to go. When we lived in Savannah I only made it as far as the Baskin Robbins on Victory Dr. I don't think it's there anymore (business fell off dramatically after we moved to San Anton)

Anybody else feel like we should bring on Whitt Sr., and Whitt Jr.? Sr could focus on recruiting, specifically in Mobile. Jr is known as a national recruiter and could learn the secondary from Mean Gene.

Rivals has something up claiming to name two emerging candidates that sound like they could be the Whitts, but I have no password.

Blake - I've sent Omnica, Queen of Habotn and Hottie without rival (but with Rivals), a request for such information to be transmitted to her loyal subjects here.

I used to spend summers on St.Simon's.

JMacs- nice place to go for dinner. Don't sit next to the piano. It gets too loud to hear each other.

Gnat's Landing: a must for lunch.

Mullet Bay- cool little local joint. Food is comfortable. Brown paper tablecloths with crayons. Turns into a locals bar later.

Brogan's raw bar-Good oysters on the half shell. On the marina. There's another Brogan's location that I'd frequent for pizza or a good sandwich.

Barbara Jeans- of Fernandina fame. Supposedly the best crab cakes in the world. Crabdaddy's and Crab trap may argue that its the second best on the island.

Brunswick:

Cargo is downtown. Higher end food. Never had a bad meal there.

Spanky's has the best fried food ever. I'm a fan of their buffalo chicken fingers, but pretty much everything on the menu is good.

Plus those two places THT mentioned.

I am thinking it may be Lolley and Thigpen from UNC, named one of the top recruiters by Rivals 2007 and 2009. From reading the UNC site he landed 5 , 4*'s for UNC.
