Reaction from Chizik's pre-game speech

Hey everyone. As we discussed in an earlier thread, football coach Gene Chizik provided a pre-game pep talk to the Auburn women's basketball team Thursday.

The team beat Kentucky, 81-69.

Here is what the Tigers had to say about Chizik's chat:

PG WHITNEY BODDIE
"That was so cool when he came in. He gave us a really good speech and I don’t if he practiced that before he gave it, but it was really good. I was fired up. That might have had something to do with that first half, but man, that was good stuff. He was just talking about how you can’t look past anyone. You have to take it one game at a time and he was talking about the triple a’s: anyone, anywhere, anytime."

COACH NELL FORTNER

"He was so gracious to do that and I appreciate it so much. Our team and me personally and our staff, we go to every home football game. We love football and we are at all of the Tiger Walks. We know the football players. We love that part of Auburn. I knew the kids would get very excited to have him in the locker room and it was just a typical coach speech. We all say about the same thing, but it was really nice to hear some things come out of his mouth that they hear come out of our mouth all the time and he’s got a lot of fire in him. I just really appreciate him doing that; I know the team really enjoyed it. It was good."

Nice coverage of the game Jay G... 'preciate it mucho mucho.

I wonder if Tubby ever showed support for the other sports by stumping for the other coaches like that? I think it was a very nice gesture on CGC part. The other sports/coaches/players support the football team, it is nice to see our football coaches doing the same in return.

I am really impressed with CGC and his efforts to get out and be part of what is going on at Auburn. You know, when I was U of L, I would attend women's volleyball and other sports when my schedule permitted. I think a coach should support other programs as much as possible. That is what collegiate athletics are all about.

I am very impressed with what Jay G calls the Fighting Fortners. This team as all the things necessary to make a good run in the post season. They have good guard play, they are unselfish, they hustle, and they get out on transition very well. Transition basketball can make up for a bad shooting night. From what I have seen of their half court game, they adjust well to changing defenses without the coaches having to do much. To me, that is what coaching is all about. When you have coached your players up, they know how to react during the course of the game. Unlike football, basketball is too fast moving to rely on coaches to make all of the adjustments.

A question for all off the subject: What do you use as a benchmark to judge a good breakfast out at a restaurant? For instance, I always order grits, well most always, to me a good breakfast in the south must be graded by the grits and how often they come with the coffee. Bad grits generally bad breakfast. In Montgomery, I rate the breakfast at Flips to be top notch followed by the Capitiol Grill at Mt. Meigs. I find the service at Cracker Barrel to be spotty as well as their grits.

Coach- you are EXACTLY right when it comes to breakfast. If they can't make good grits, they can't cook. Mrs. THT (and Miss THT) can cook a mean breakfast.
I was pleased with breakfast at the Auburn Hotel/Conference Ctr last fall. But I will certainly give Price's BBQ House a visit this fall.

I remember Capitol Grill quite fondly though I only had lunch there. For what it's worth, if my previously mentioned J. Christopher's were to decide to locate in the gump, they'd be a prime candidate for a spot in Eastchase. I've tried convincing them to open up something in the Seaside/Seagrove/Sandestin area but no one listens to me.

There is a gas station/BBQ place in Greenville. Great breakfast...cat head biscuits and the slice their own bacon.

For great breakfast SeanZ recommends the following:

In Nashville, TN:
Pancake Pantry in the village. Stellar breakfast.

In Atlanta, GA:
The Flying Biscuit Cafe or J. Christophers, many locations throughout. World Beater brunch/breakfast.

The worst part about Huntsville is that I haven't found a Barbecue House equivalent place for breakfast. I sure miss that place.

I get the Dunkin Donuts coffee at Costco. For coffee, the absolute best coffee in the world is this:

http://www.landof1000hills.com/

It is from Rwanda, I won't explain the rest, check it out. I have never had better and had plenty worse. When you buy this coffee, you do some good in the world.

I concur that grits are a key element.

Few establishments have the skill to season them effectively. Most leave 'em plain. That's an amateur move.

I also love sausage gravy. If you can't get that right, might as well shut 'er down.

Blogger michael said...

My dad always gets Ethiopian coffee,Crum. At least, I think it is Ethiopian, it may be Rwandan. Either way, it is definitely the best coffee I have ever had.

And sorry to go all mainstream, but a chicken biscuit with gravy from Chick fil a is reall really reall good. Most people don't try it with gravy. I'm tellin ya, it's good stuff.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

When we lived near the big chicken, our Sat trips to Auburn always, we're talking 100%, included breakfast at "chickafil"
Yum!

Blogger Denny Crum said...

Soupy Grits are a definite sign of amatuer hour and that the restaurant needs to be closed due to lack of competence. Gravy is a must for any breakfast featuring sausage. I haven't had any real red eye gravy from Country Ham, well, since I made it myself. Ham must be of the Country Ham variety, or it is a no go for me.

9:07 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I'll definitely lather the gravy on that chicken biscuit next time I'm there.

Michael probably likes Fruity Pebbles too. Me, I prefer Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch if I'm having a sugar explosion.

Blogger michael said...

Good doctor. I expect a full report on your enjoyment.

For best results, separate the chicken and cut up into small cubes. Return chicken to top of biscuit halves, and eat using knife and fork. Drink beverage intermittently throughout the course of meal.

I do like fruity pebbles. In fact, I bought a box last week (mainly for the kids, but I admit I had a bowl or two or three)

We got Cocoa Pebbles this week (first time for the kids to have em), and the kids got into the box and ate just about all of them. Now they are on cereal hiatus for teh next few days (can you believe it is punishment to give my kids eggs and toast instead of cold cereal?)

I don't like biscuits and gravy. I like my biscuits with butter and jelly. I also have to put sugar in my grits. Does that make me a Damn Yankee, Dr. HABOTN?

I had someone from South Carolina tell me that they put sugar in their grits and that I didn't know how to eat grits properly. So, go figure.

Denny, you couldn't be more right about "The Grits Standard" of breakfast.

I like the Farmers Market Cafe in downtown Montgomery for its grits, grilled biscuits, thick bacon and overall positive breakfast experience.

Dadgum, it's 9:30 ... probably too late to get breakfast.

Doughnuts can be "a" breakfast, or a snack.

"The" breakfast must include grits.

Man, I forgot about the Farmers Market, they have the Gold Standard for grits.

I'll take it up a notch Michael - I don't like grits OR watermelon. At all. I will not eat them. And I'm a true southerner. I've never lived any further north than where I am right now. I just can't stand grits or watermelon so sue me.

Let's hate on grits for a second: how can you truly be so crazy about something with so little taste? It just takes on the taste of whatever you add to it. If you add enough salt/pepper/sugar/cheese/whatever to cardboard, I imagine you can make that taste pretty good also. Loving grits is kind of like saying you love lettuce. Who says that?

why would you guys eat any cereal that doesn't taste like candy. No cereal is really good for you so eat the good stuff

9:50 AM
Blogger michael said...

If rabbits could talk, the first thing they would probably say is, "Stop this insanity! Our feet are in no way lucky!"

This would make me pause, because it is a little more unsettling to cut a foot off of something that talks as opposed to something that doesn't. But in the end I would still take the foot, because you can't trust rabbits, and I need the extra luck.
