Taking a look at: Offensive line

Hey everyone. Though basketball will be picking up tomorrow, there isn't much going on today ... yet.

So we'll start an occasional series on positions along the football depth chart. We can examine what went well in 2008, what went awry and what you can expect in 2009.

  • LAST YEAR: It was a mess. The Tigers' initial offense was flawed because, as we discussed many times last season, nobody seemed to take ownership of it. Tony Franklin said it wasn't his. Hugh Nall said it wasn't his. You know Tommy Tuberville had no role in offensive administration.

Once Franklin was dismissed on Oct. 8, Auburn's offense became an amalgam of different ideas that assembled into a confusing array of nothingness. The team had no identity. The line didn't know how to play anymore. It had been conditioned during the off-season to be a leaner group ready to handle an 85-play day. Now they were being asked to be bulldozers again -- without their standard weight. You know how that ended.

  • WHAT WENT RIGHT: Not much. Guard Big Snacks Berry played fairly well when thrust into full-time duty at West Virginia and beyond. Center Ryan Pugh doesn't quit.

  • WHAT WENT WRONG: Lee Ziemba was injured (a torn meniscus in his left knee has been repaired), Jason Bosley was injured, Byron Isom lost his job and, for reasons I can't explain, Tyronne Green didn't play well.

  • WHAT'S NEW: Everything. New offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn will have ownership of Auburn's 2009 offense, which means there probably will be a singular vision of how the line should execute. New OL coach Jeff Grimes, hired from Colorado, accepted this job because he believes in what Malzahn is teaching. A united front among the coaches should prompt significantly better performance.

Ziemba will be ready by summer. He was very good as a freshman.

Auburn added two signees -- guard Andre Harris and tackle John Sullen. Harris could push for playing time. Sullen is expected to redshirt in an effort to re-build his body.

  • A STAB AT THE 2009 DEPTH CHART
    • LT: Lee Ziemba, A.J. Greene
    • LG: Byron Isom, Bart Eddins
    • C: Ryan Pugh, Big Snacks Berry
    • RG: Berry, Kyle Coulahan
    • RT: Andrew McCain, Jared Cooper

I cant believe I just bought a TV. Talk about buyer's remorse. I guess "ordered a TV" would be a more accurate statement. The one I have is only 14 years old and it still works. I caved.

after bashing plasmas for years, I ordered a plasma. Panasonic TH-58PZ850. Its screen is less reflective than the usual/old plasma tvs and the lcd I was considering actually has a new screen that's more reflective than usual/old lcd tvs. I.e. about equal on screen reflection. And the "experts" say plasma is still better for fast motion/sports.

I would have liked to get the newest Sony LCD but the $6,000 price tag was a bit silly for a TV. Ok, it was a LOT silly.

Harrison and Will: I challenge you to any Saved by the Bell trivia. My wife and I were flipping the channels a couple of months ago, and we stumbled upon SBTB. It was the driver's ed episode. My wife would pause it, and most of the time, I could quote the next few lines word for word. That's what two episodes on TBS followed by two episodes on WGN a day back in elementary school will do to you.

My wife was so impressed she even wrote about how I knew the lines on facebook. Of course, it was more like, "My husband is a freak," instead of, "Look at how cool my husband is," but recognition is nice, whatever form it may come in.

Hola Hotties, I'm back. Sorry I missed what reads like a lively Puppet Hour and roid (ster not hemi) discussion. In my time away from you today, I learned that if you and your Golden Retriever are on a run and about 1/2 mile away from the house she decides she does not want to run, there's just not a great deal you can do about it. Thankfully, I pack heat everywhere I go. I'll miss that dog.

Update, Navin R. Johnson has just found his "special purpose".

Mon - I'm with you on the TV. I have the Sony Bravia XBR 46" LCD. I just can't imagine how it gets any better than that.

I got his attention and showed him how I thought he was #1. Very immature, I know but heck I was 17. So, F.O. if you're a lurker, please accept my apology for that and that only. Did "The Jungle" moniker ever really catch on enough that it needs to be officially dropped? I mean, yeah, we played "Welcome to the Jungle" and there were a few t-shirts, I think.

But it's not like people went around taking about the game at The Jungle like it was Death Valley or The Swamp.

The Jungle idea never took off. They didn't really push it like they should.

I actually thought it was a good idea, they just didn't do much to market it.

As for the last two position coaches, I think they need to be reserved for scapegoats. I believe not having enough scapegoats was the biggest problem with our team last year. Sure, we fired Franklin, but we really needed another high profile coach to fire at the end of the season.

Yea, 2 scapegoats work well. I have a theory for being a headcoach. You fire one assistant after each loss. By having two designated scapegoats you are covered for losing streaks. After all, it wouldn't be fair to fire a coach that had only been on campus a week.

Doc - I really liked that story too (obviously).

THT - in '01, I took my daughter (then 10) to see NSync and Britney Spears. 2 separate shows. She of course loved it, as a fan of music, I hated them. Now, had I been say 17 - 20ish at the time, that would have SO been the place to be because the great looking girls were aplenty. Or, if girls just aren't your bag there was plenty of the Brokeback type there too. So I thought then, and still do, that I deserved a medal or something for having endured those 2 crapfests so my daughter could have her first and second concert experiences.

On top of that, I was a designated driver for my wife and a couple of her friends so they could see Duran Duran. My payment was a free ticket to the show. After that experience I decided I didn't care to do anything nice for people again. I hate Duran Duran.

Finally; yes, I'm aware of the relationship between Doc and THT. The above comments are in response to posts by Doc and another one by THT.

Not sure Auburn will ever have a qb again that could execute the 2 minute drive for a go-ahead score the way BC could. He was so good at it that you were almost in shock when he didn't pull it off. I still think he could have beat S. Florida in regulation. Still have not forgiven Tubs for that one.

Sorry. The '07 FL Game reference made me think of that.

Righty, Cox was amazing with last minute drives, but I always kind of thought that was an indication that the offense wasn't living up to its potential. If two minute drives seem to work, then start the darn game with them.

gatiger -Thank goodness my daughter didn't like Nstink or Britney. She wouldn't have been at the concerts. You're a braver dad than me.

Righty - thanks for the bad memories (of the lack of a good 2 min offense). Dameyune Craig was great with it, as was Brandon.

Ironically enough, what got me coming here this last season was all the people with man crushes on Kodi Burns. Yes, in the al.com forums there were plenty of people that had already declared Burns our saviour.

Could not agree more Steve. I never thought we spent enough time in 4-wide from the shotgun. Seemed to work every time we did it but we only did it when we absolutely had to.

2 minute drives work because (1) the defenses are tired and (2)the defensive coordinators abandon their whole game plan and play that bend but don't break prevent nonsense

Worst Experience Ever:

In 1997, when I was officiating HS football. My crew had a game in Greenville. We thought it would be fun to play golf before the game.

So we left that morning in mid to late September -- a 98 degree day and played 45 holes of golf. Really bad idea.

The game was a barn burner ... I was having dizzy spells in the fourth quarter thanks to dehydration and announced to the referee that by whatever means necessary the game would not go to OT.

Thankfully, Greenville scored late to win without my or the crew's intervention.

The next day ... I had forgotten ... I was obligated to take Stewardess to see the Barney show at the BJCC as an early birthday present.

I couldn't move ... I was cramping ... I was in the most pain I had ever contemplated in my life, and I was stuck listening to two hours of Barney songs in Birmingham with 4,000 screaming 4 year olds. This is a glimpse of Hell without the UAT contingent.

Only saving grace, Dameyune led us back to beat Idiot Gerry DiNardo and Cecil Collins in Baton Rouge that night.

If the offense had opened up a bit more with Cox, the running game would have likely done much better too. So many people underestimated the contribution Cox made. He may have not been the best QB we have had, but he may have been the toughest and one of the more accurate. He is also better than anyone we are likely to play this coming season.

10:43 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

ballin, I can't think of an Auburn QB that had more success in last minute drives than Brandon Cox. True, the defense is partially due to it, but still, Cox had a knack for making it happen.

10:46 AM
Blogger Righty said...

Ballin
If that is true (and it probably is a lot of the time) you would have to think that opposing D- coordinators would have enough film of Cox embarrassing defenses at the end of games and do something different. I think in this case, Cox was just much more comfortable not being under center and being able to see the field better. I believe he is still the most accurate passer to ever play highschool qb in AL, and he really showed it when he had to.

10:47 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I think you have to view Cox in two chapters (Before LSU 2006 and After LSU 2006).

Before, he had more talent to help him and was in better physical condition.

Afterward, he suffered because of his minimal arm strength and accumulation of big hits in addition to the shrinking talent around him.

He made some huge plays for us, and engineered some big wins, and was a very gritty young man. Too bad, the Brandon of 2005 wasn't the Brandon of 2007.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The only time I recall Cox not finishing a game winning drive where he had time was against Miss State in 2007. That was a horrible pass on 4th down that he threw.

Almost every other time, given just a little time he found a way to get us down field.

The hard part is many times he was the reason we were behind and needed a last minute drive.

I think one of Michael's puppets on meth could have coached LSU to a victory that night ... but not DiNardo.

It's a twist on an old joke: Who are the two teams that could stop Cecil Collins? The Miami-Dade Police and the LSU coaching staff.

11:06 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We've had a long string of games vs LSU where the team that deserved to win probably was on the losing end of the game due to either bad coaching or strange occurances.

WERK- starting in 1970 in Auburn. AU with Sullivan and Beasley were heavily favored. It poured rain all morning and the field was an absolute quagmire (I lost a shoe in it after the game). 17-9 LSU. Auburn would have won by a couple of TDs on a dry field, but such was not the case that day.

11:12 AM
Blogger Righty said...

Speaking of LSU, they have had 2 one-year starting quarterbacks in the last 6 years show up and win BCS NC. I would like to get one of those. Neil Caudle maybe?

I cant think of QB I'd rather have in a 2-minute drive than Brandon Cox! He was gifted in those situations.

Tarheel that '70 LSU game brings back some memories. I was ushering at the game that day (boy scouts) and it was miserable.

11:19 AM

I don't think his knees are an issue anymore. He has just been rotting on the bench like every other back-up quarterback that has been in Auburn since 2001. Why he did not get a look this past year is beyond me. He has to be the happiest kid alive that Tuberville is gone.

Well if I could have any QB in a 2 min drill, it would be John Elway.

I think he still holds the NFL record for most game winning drives.

However, if I had to choose an Auburn QB, I'd take Reggie Slack. I think he might have lead more late game comebacks than Cox.

I don't think Reggie Slack's AU teams were behind as often. Just a guess, I don't have any stats to back that up.

Typical game with BCox 2 Qb: AU starts off scoring utilizing running/short passes off playaction. The defense moves up and shuts down the offense. AU slowly loses the lead gained early in the game.

At the end of the first half or game.....the defense backs up to play nickel/dime and gives BCox and our slow WRS room to operate. BCox audibles well and we normally score to win....except when Obumanu drops the ball while standing in the endzone.

Moral of the story....we need WRs that are respected and a strong arm QB that can read and audible.

I'm out and back to work so I dont cause Jet any headaches.

"except when Obumanu drops the ball while standing in the endzone."

That was Campbell passing, not Cox. That was the 2003 Ole Miss game.

A lot of people forget that Campbell threw late to an open Jeris McIntyre on the next play because we were all stunned by the Obomanu drop.

11:56 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"Tubs was obsessed with Kodi"

I don't recall that. I guess that obsession lead to Chris Todd starting half of the season and Kodi not playing a full game until the West Virginia game?

11:57 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

WERK - I'm still stunned from that play. Every time a ball is dropped in our games of toss, it's "an Obumanu"

Blogger JgobravesHAG said...

What was our record with Todd starting then tell me our record with Burns starting please?

11:59 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

To Ben Obomanu's credit, he stood there after the game and answered every question asked of him. Most kids (and coaches/Gibbs) would have ran away from the media.

12:00 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Todd had a decent record (4-2 as a starter I believe)... but to say Tub was obsessed with Kodi isn't accurate in my opinion.

He just didn't want to play Caudle. Maybe he had an obsession against Caudle, but I don't think he was obsessed with Burns.

12:01 PM
Blogger michael said...

Comparing Todd stats to Kodi stats isn't very telling since Todd played mostly against crap teams.

And I wanted to go give Obomanu a hug at that press conference.

Todd may have made the single worst pass I've ever seen against Arkansas.

The majority of the people who post on Auburn message boards back from July-October were obsessed with Burns and Fannin.

There was some major obsession there.

12:06 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Another aspect to consider when discussing Cox is the decline of the AU running game. Since Kenny Irons was hurt in the early part of '06, the Auburn running game has been average at best with a few exceptional games sprinkled in. The play-action doesn't work when there is no threat of a running game. I think every team in the conference figured out the feared AU 5-yard out pattern on 3rd and 8 also.

12:14 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Maybe Caudle will step up.

I will be a shock to me. This guy hasn't played more than ultra mop-up duty since his junior year of high school (Remember he missed his senior year due to a knee injury in the first game). That will be five years ago this fall.

I know he had a bunch of stars, and I know he went to the Elite 11, but for whatever reason he has played against Tennessee Tech and UT-Martin. And that's about it.

That's why I'm highly suspicious that he will be a contributor next year.

12:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Todd was much better at running the offense than Burns, but it was very clear that Todd was done. If the second half of the LSU game wasn't evidence enough, the second half of the UT game was. Todd was very good when his arm was decent, but it was very clear early on he wasn't a long term option at QB. Either Burns, Caudle, or Trotter will need to step up this season unless Todd's arm is vastly improved.

As for short passes, my hope is that we don't see the bubble screen to nowhere so often this coming season.
