Ted Roof speaks
Here's a quick gander of what defensive coordinator Ted Roof discussed this afternoon.
- NEW @ 5:35 p.m. On filling out the Tigers' coaching staff (two vacancies remain): "It's more important to get it right than getting it done for the sake of getting it done. I have every confidence. (Chizik) is in the process of doing that. When it's right, it'll get finished. You want it to happen sooner rather than later. Any time you bring a new staff together, (you want to get) everybody on the same page as far as a schematics, playbook, ways of doing things. It'll happen when it's supposed to happen, when it's right."
- NEW @ 4:20 p.m. On his game-day personality: "I am who I am and what I am, and I'm going to compete and want to win. I want to see our guys play a hard-nosed physical style of defense that Auburn's known for and the Auburn people deserve."
- NEW @ 4:15 p.m. On his specific defensive plans: "We use (4-3) some. We're pretty multiple in what we do. You have to have a system that's adaptable to different types of people -- especially if you're coming into a new situation. It's one thing if you've been at a place several years and you recruit to a specific system. It's another thing when you come in, you're new and you have a system that's broad enough and diverse enough to handle whatever personnel."
- NEW @ 4:10 p.m. On his defensive approach: "This league, you don't trick people. You have to out-hit people. There won't be much tricking going on."
- NEW @ 4:10 p.m. On how he learned about his current players: ``The first thing I did the first day was put on three games and watch three football games. Then I had quality control, our graduate assistant, to make a 10-play highlight tape of each kid. I wanted to see what they could do. As a coach, you want to have assistants flexible … not just stuff something in there like a square peg in a round hole."
- His defenses at Minnesota were multiple. He thinks his defenses at Auburn will be more standard because, he said, the SEC is a "hit 'em in the mouth" league.
- He claims to be the only person in Atlantic Coast Conference history to draw a personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct call as a player, assistant coach and head coach. Assistant coach? "It was an inappropriate comment at an inappropriate time."
- He doesn't like discussing his personnel. That means we have no idea what he's thinking in terms of lineups, etc.
- He hasn't discussed Gabe McKenzie. Looks like he'll be a tight end.
- He said recent signee Demond Washington is "an offensive player." There was some talk that Washington, a 2007 Tallassee High graduate, would emerge as a cornerback.

As usual...I'm second.

Do I get any points for fifth? I plead the fif
Don't like discussing his personnel?
Demond Washington an "offensive player"?? I sure hope DW knows what he's doing. We already have a log jam at RB and he only has 2 years of eligibility left. Seems like an easier path to the NFL on the D side.
I was nervous in the win.
I was sure we would had a Demond on defense. It looks to me like we have plenty of players at the skill positions on offense. Unless he wants to put on about 100# and become a tackle, the defense seems to be where playing time would be for him.
Yea Steve...he better run a 4.29 for real. He just didnt look that impressive at RB from his vids.

is it me or does Ted Roof seem like a guy that will get down and dirty on his defense?
He has inward fear written all over him!
thanks for the post, jgt.
I like Washington on O
Added several Roof quotes to the main thread.
Roof says "We're pretty multiple in what we do", then he says " we'll probably be pretty standard, you don't fool people in this league". What, did somebody kick him under the podium after he mentioned being multiple? (shut-up Ted. ixnay on the ultiplemay)--geesh
Hello
I just relay what they say.
Hi, jhag.
Hey Jay G.
Heard the advertiser was getting or has recently gotten a sports editor, some yankee?
We've hired Popeye...
Still reserving judgment til the season begins. But I like what I'm hearing. Of course, that's why they say it. I also liked that our QB problem last year was a wonderful problem to have...
"This league, you don't trick people. You have to out-hit people. There won't be much tricking going on."
I moistened myself a little on that one.
Kristina
I thought what they were saying last year about the quarterbacks was very suspect. Tuberville does not play back-up quarterbacks unless the starter died. Just never sat well with me.
The grad assistant is named Quality Control?
Maybe saying he's not going to trick people is really a trick.
Righty, yeah, I never really bought that line either. Just pointing out how the coaches will say certain things...
We have a "new" sports editor at the Advertiser, yes.
I don't know much about him personally, so I can't confirm his Yankeeness.
When we're talking HABOTN, thought, it's a communal sports editorship involving everyone here. So you're hired, "Righty."
Well, the Troop speak didn't excite me, but the Roof speak makes me want to go buy a used car.
So was there a hot blog contest? Was it at a beach bar? What did this blog have to do to win?
Anybody see where the sheriff's department in SC is arresting people and trying to build a case on Michael Phelps just so they can charge him with a misdemeanor. Way to use those tax dollars prudently- idiots.
I have to be honest, after last season I was hoping for more multiple looks on defense. Oh well, that's why Roof gets paid the big bucks. Hope it works out for AU.
Jay G must've been a hippie in a past life with all of this communal talk.
michael phelps on a stick? now that's just going too far.
Jay, what are your impressions of Roof as far as recruiting go? Do you see him being someone who can sell the program to players?
Tests have revealed that my laptop runs hotter than any other laptop producing credible, blog-based information involving Auburn.
Therefore ...
As for Roof's recruiting acumen, I don't sense that is his primary function.
Thanks for the reply, Jay. He doesn't strike me as a very dynamic personality, but I know people sometimes come across different in person as opposed to reading what they said. I'm not sure what to think of Roof. Obviously, Chizik thought enough of him to make him the highest-paid assistant on the staff.
I read the new sports editor's column yesterday and was unimpressed. Apparently he's not from around the parts.
Just wanted to say how glad I am that HABOTN is run so superbly, kudos Jay G. Looking at the comments earlier today from "those blogs that we do not mention"-nothing but a bunch of Wankers having a 3rd grade name-calling contest. It is so good to be here!
Jay--did Roof mention anything about the empty coaching slots?
Suntiger
I have not read anything by him yet, but I spoke with a guy that covers a high school football beat with the advertiser and he was telling me that he was coming , I think, from Wisconsin. Not sure, that conversation was 2 months ago. Wherever it was, it was not near here.
Suntiger: Yes, Roof did discuss that. I'll post that to the main blog now.
Sorry, If I missed this earlier...but why is Finebum ranting about CGC...and the Montgomery News is saying he is getting heat in their 6pm news promo.
Welcome to the HABOTN Postermom.
I have no idea why Chizik would be feeling the heat. He doesn't post here.
"He doesn't post here." LOL
Every time I read a roof quote I say 3 times..
CGC is a defensive mind
CGC is a defensive mind
CGC is a defensive mind

JGT- you're in excellent form this afternoon/evening.
Dear Leader- I echo your comments on Ted Roof.
Peter,
Your post made me spit water on my monitor. I thought the same thing when I read it. the GA's name is Quality Control? Hillarious.
I find the comments from both coaches encouraging. I find the coaching changes going well. I plan to meet Chizik in the spring at a football function. Want to see what he is up close and personal.
Chizik feeling the heat due to some comment he made yesterday about "I've never made a mistake" But we all know Idiotbaum would never take anything out of context.
