Early scrimmage information, 4/4
Hey everyone. We have no pictures, no video, no stats, no score.
I'll still pass along the information I have about the Tigers' first real spring scrimmage.
I'll update with more information as it becomes available.
I'll have a video, but that won't debut until at least 3 p.m. CDT.

I'll still pass along the information I have about the Tigers' first real spring scrimmage.
- I think the defense won. I think TB Onterio McCalebb fumbled during the final drive. I think Auburn's "scoring system" rewards five points to the defense for recovering a fumble and that five-point surge was the difference. I don't know that, though.
- I think Kodi Burns threw one touchdown pass.
- I think Neil Caudle threw one touchdown pass, possibly a long one, to Terrell Zachery.
- Gene Chizik told the offense to slow down at one point. Auburn's defense was having a difficult time gathering its pre-snap bearings. The head coach said: "Today, we weren't trying to fool anybody."
- Eltoro Freeman, the junior-college linebacker, may have played as the top option on the weak side today. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof neither confirmed nor denied that report. Freeman had been working exclusively on the strong side.
- Quarterbacks went live -- ie were eligible to be tackled -- at times today. That was done to help offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn make more keen personnel assessments.
- I think former Prattville High tailback Justin Albert had a good day. Several players mentioned him.
- Chizik confirmed that OL Kyle Coulahan has left the team ... ostensibly to concentrate on academics. I don't expect him to return.
- UPDATED WR DEPTH CHART
*"9" (formerly known as X): Tim Hawthorne, Quindarius Carr
*"2" (formerly known as Z): Terrell Zachery, Philip Pierre-Louis
*"5"(formerly known as Y, inside slot): Darvin Adams, Derek Winter
I'll update with more information as it becomes available.
I'll have a video, but that won't debut until at least 3 p.m. CDT.

Hail yes!
For all of you who do not live in Auburn. It is one of those marvelous Spring days that you remember from your college yrs. Bout 75 or so, hardly any clouds, oh and the Alpha Psi rodeo is being held today. I'm too old to go now, but I've had many a good time at this event.
Good to hear Justin Albert is making his mark! That took some guts to pass up scholarship offers from other schools and try to walk-on at AU.
Yea it is a beautiful day on the Plains!! Had this scrimmage been open, I expect that there would have been a very nice crowd that I would have been part of.
I think I appreciate Jay's efforts. On the rodeo note, went to the Wal-Mart on South College this morning and I have never seen so many women walking around in daisy dukes and cowboy boots. Spring is in the air.
I think the final score was 45-40 in favor of the defense.
It was tied up on the final drive until McCalebb fumbled. That's a wrap.
Good news JGT. Too bad they won't let the media watch and come up with some in depth news. But we will just have to live with what we can get.
JGT any word about the commit or even Mr. Jones?
As I have said many times, I don't pay close attention to recruiting until December.
If Bryan says the kid committed, he committed.
I haven't heard anything official about the LSU transfer.
I think your use of "I think" clearly answers my question of a few days ago - "Hey Jay, how do you feel about the closed practices?"
Yep. Got it.
Bad day?
Hey Mon.
Are you asking if I'm having a bad day?
I am afraid to say yes.
Hey there AU1 - What's up on the east side?
Nada much....beautiful day today but a bit breezy.
I don't understand why I'm covering something I can't see and can't verify.
It's like covering my friends playing Madden ... over the phone. It's pointless.
OM can fumble all he wants to right now. just don't do it in a real game. luper now has time to correct that kind of stuff as well as he can before it means anything.
I don't know what to think with all of this thinking.
just knowing the players are on the field gets me ready for fall.
OM didn't fumble if no one saw it...kind of like a tree falling if no one is there.
I can understand the frustration Jay.
Word around HABOTN headquarters is that we could have some scrimmage video for your perusal around 3:30 p.m.
Confidence is "somewhat high."
I'll update.
The way AU and Alabama are conducting football practices may lead to the death of beat writers jobs. If fall practices are also closed, what can Jay and Co. do other than write what the coach tells them happened? I doubt they consider that to be reporting.
i'm not sure i want jones to transfer if he was not good enough to start at corndog-u. AU needs players as good or better than corndog-u starters since we play them every year. i seem to remember him playing some last year but not starting. i watch every sec game my tv can put on the screen for free so i watched a number of corndog-u games. if jones couldn't cover the corndog WRs good enough in practice to earn a starting spot, he can't cover them in a real game.
Well, I can always write about something else.
What sucks is that you all won't get reliable information about your team. Auburn should care more about making you all happy, since they don't get money from me. They get money from you. Playing this little shell game doesn't appear to give them any advantages, but they don't care what I think.
chris todd may have thrown for 500 yards and 6 TDs and we would not know it!!!!
I think you should be the new quote on the front page...
"It's like covering my friends playing Madden ... over the phone. It's pointless."
Nice.
Decoding this scrimmage footage from Auburn's TV guy is taking FOREVER. I need a Cray Supercomputer for this seemingly simple task.
I 2nd.
Jay, I may be in the minority of fans, but I prefer objective reporting over sunshine-pumping. The "fan" sites(Scout, Rivals etc.) provide that type of information. I fear more coaches like to see info coming from those type of places instead of independent reporters.
That's the beauty of Jay...he ain't a fan.
Exactly, AU1N04. That is what I have always appreciated about this site.
I wonder if Luper will make OM carry a football around campus next week?
Closed practices suck but remember how crazy it was this time last year? Every report was about a team fight and the drama with the Furr kid.
I read that Eric Smith and Justin Albert both scored TD's on a draw. Ralph Spry, transfer from Minn I think, caught a TD or so the story goes. Did I mention that closed practices suck?
Luper should make OM where a T shirt that says NO DROPS!!
I think we need to rent JGT a blimp to watch the scrm. from next week.
I would lend you a rocket but I am having issues getting it off the ground.
Chipx2 I heard two perspectives of the Jones transfer. One is that he is a really good DB that was just in a pack of really good DBs and there just not alot of room for mistakes. The other is that he was not very physical but really fast. More of a track star that a football player. Who knows the real deal. It's just food for thought, I'll let you do the dishes.
DL - I think we may shoot it down anyway.
The kid started 2 games as a redshirt frosh at lsu. Ill take that any day of the week. We need as much depth as possible, plus he's already sec tested. Seems that irons kid who ran the ball for the gamecocks did pretty well don't ya think?
I can neither confirm nor deny that closed scrimmage is lame. Nevermind - It is definitely lame.
thanks for all the hard work anyways. any little snippets we get at this point are nice.
covering madden over the phone......nice.
How did the Madden game turn out BTW? I'm dying to know.
When he hit the ball carrier they usually went backwards
I noticed that as well. He didn't always have the ballcarrier perfectly squared up, but even when he was having to make an arm tackle the runner still went back. I like that
Phelon Jones' Dad coaches my current high school. sweet.
OK. You all are going to be happy.
We have scrimmage footage. The video has been edited. I am in the process of uploading it.
ETA: 3:55 p.m.
This is a SUPER SIZED video ... it's four minutes long.
Better make that 4:00.
Woot! Woot! Hooray for practice footage.
Diggin a 4 minute vid.
We love long vids Jay!!
I read this Trooper quote from al.com:
WRs coach and AHC Trooper Taylor gushed about the offense: "Lemme tell you, Malzahn's a genius, fellas. Write it down. I'm telling you, he is the real deal, folks. I made the right decision, I can promise you that. I'm excited. I'm more excited than them (pointing to Tim Hawthorne) probably. I'm geeked about being in this offense."
I'm gushing a little bit too...sight unseen.
Coach Troop is Geeked about the offense.

Yea, this is a complicated process ... getting film footage off a DVD to my computer to the editing program and up to the Interwebs.
Trooper gets a little hyperbolic at times.
I never hear the term "geeked" unless it is from our coaching staff or Jay G. Is this term widely used.
Guess I'm just to young for it.
I hope all of this enthusiasm is warrented. I know one thing, my enthusiasm for the upcoming video is definitely warrented. I'm stoked (read "geeked" for all you old fogies)
Any news on OL Kyle Coulahan. Rumor floating that he has left the team.
I hate to bust your bubble Wakerider but "stoked" is just as old as "geeked". One seemed more prevelent on the West coast and the other on the East.
Man Kathy, as if that position wasnt hurting bad enough with depth issues.
Coulahan is out, yes.
Confirmed.
Third-team OG ... I didn't even think to put that in the notes. I will now.
yeah I thougth of that when I typed it, but my parents still hate the term stoked, so I figured I could make it fly,
The truth is I really am not up to date with the lingo of today. High schoolers sound foriegn to me, guess I'm old too.
Taking a bit longer than expected ...
I'm at the office waiting on the video. Don't have any service at home these days ... personal budget cuts.
Yesterday, I was playing in a golf tournament at Emerald Mountain. I had to shoo away a 7 foot alligator so I could chip to the green. I hit him in the tail with my wedge and we both jumped about 20 feet. Crazy and scary. I wanted to yell "krike" or however you spell it.
My first rule of golf is I take a drop if there is a gator involved.
Playing with my dad and his friend when I was like 10, the friend's lie happened to be about 6 inches form a gators mouth. He said no biggie, went towards the gator shaking his club and yelling, the gator came right at him, wasn't scared a bit.
And my gator drop rule began.
This was in Central Alabama, which makes the whole thing very strange to me.
As for Justin Albert, mark it down ... future blue collar superstar.
That O-Line is looking scarier by the day. I still can't understand what happened to the o-line recruiting. The starting QB may be the one who can best escape defenders in the backfield.
Video is UP.
