Iron Bowl moving to ... Friday?

Hey everyone. Recently received word from the SEC office that CBS has gained exclusive rights to televise the Iron Bowl in 2009 and 2010.

So, what gives? The games will be played on Fridays.

The 2009 game, played at Jordan-Hare, will kick off at 1:30 p.m. CST on Friday, Nov. 27.

The 2010 game, played in Tuscaloosa, will be played on Friday, Nov. 26.

The Iron Bowl has been played on Friday five times before:
  • November 25, 1988 (Auburn 15, Alabama 10 in Birmingham)
  • November 27, 1987 (Auburn 10, Alabama 0 in Birmingham)
  • November 29, 1974 (Alabama 17, Auburn 13 in Birmingham)
  • October 23, 1903 (Alabama 18, Auburn 6 in Montgomery)
  • November 15, 1901 (Auburn 17, Alabama 0 in Tuscaloosa)

In the case of both dates, that's the Friday after Thanksgiving, right in the middle of a 4 day weekend. What's wrong with that? No one will be working and everyone will be able to travel and imbibe with fewer worries.

Besides, it's cheaper to drag your wife to the game than let her go shopping that day.

Isn't the Egg Bowl played on that Friday? Are you telling me that Mississippi V Mississippi St. isn't a compelling national matchup? And someone explain me this, how does CBS own a game this far out? My recent foray into the world of unemployment (and being a tax burden to the rest of you) has caused me to stoop to a new personal low. I was forced to check the REC website for employment opportunities, however, I think I am a bit overqualified as I can spell my own name correctly and pick my nose efficiently. I fear AU is falling behind Bama again…they may eventually take the lead for most number of years on NCAA probation by an SEC school.

These positions have all been approved by the University of Alabama legal council, University of Alabama Athletic Dept. and Compliance Office, Head Coach Nick Saban, and with enthusiastic support from Athletic Department Boosters. Eligibility and qualifications will be determined by Coach Saban based on strength, speed, and agility drills conducted in off-season workouts or summer recruiting camps. NCAA knowledge and approval of these positions is still pending but expected.

Some jobs w/ descriptions for players and recruits posted on the REC website include:

Senior Vegetation Regeneration Analyst.
Monitors the regenerative properties of local vegetation (such as grass) and determines at what time mechanical intervention is necessary to remove excess growth. Removal of excess growth will be performed by contracted landscaping company. Benefits include: Company Car: Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes, Hummer & Lexus available, meal expenses, and retention bonus. Cost del Mar sunglasses and lawn chair provided. Attendance is optional.

Pigmentation Moisture Retention Analyst.
Continuously monitors the level of moisture retained in interior and/or exterior paint that has been applied to a structure (such as the upscale house your parents/guardian/mentor will receive free of rent/mortgage). Benefits include: Company Car (available in the usual models), meal expenses and retention bonus. Wii, X-box, and PS3 + games provided. Attendance is optional unless you live there too.

Automotive Coating Reflectivity and Sanitation Specialist.
Sit in a shady or air conditioned observation post and monitor the progress of automobile detail work performed by hourly staff at local auto dealer or car wash. Benefits include: Company Cars for you and family provided by dealer, meal expenses and retention bonus. Attendance is optional.

Senior Package Contents Inspector.
Inspect various packages such as briefcases, cardboard boxes and brown paper bags for items such as jewelry, Rolex watches, car keys, and $100 bills. This is a work from home opportunity. All expenses incurred will be reimbursed (numerous times if necessary).

Positions are/will be immediately available in any city where a current star football player or highly sought football recruit lives or relocates to. Family members and high school coaches are also eligible. Contact your University of Alabama position and/or recruiting coach for further details.

1987 IB was also Friday. Our early morning flight was canceled and we arrived in B'ham near kickoff. The cabbie was going airborne at every intersection getting us to the game. We only missed the first 6 minutes of another GREAT AU win!

JD...those rumors have surfacing every few weeks. Spongeworthy has on several occasions, tried to incite the HABOTN conversation without a lot of participation.

There is a lot of smoke....mostly coming from the AU folks. Is it really a serious fire or mostly a smoke machine? Bama will probably get at least some form of probation. I imagine only a few Bammer insiders really know if it will be bad. Notice that the national sports media isn't saying much?

Bama will get some sort of probation from textbookgate (primarily due to what happened with Harvey Glance's track team while the AD was in the repeat violator window) and the football team will lose few, if any scholarships over it.....

And that will be that.

12:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

And that is lousy, FSJ. Alabama promptly punished those involved and it took a toll on the season (except the UT game). They reported it quickly.

N - Never
C - Consistent

I sorta agree Sensi..

but I sorta don't...

The subsequent investigation found that the same thing happened with the track team and swimming team back until late 2005/early 2006.. (which was in the repeat violator window)

To me that means we didn't have enough oversight on the process from a University perspective. We should have been very diligent. Even though to you and me it seems like a small deal (getting books for your girlfriends/boyfriends/friends) we should have been more aware. I bet it caused every school around to examine their process though. :-)

Remember we are forbidden to take from the fruit of Bear and Saban.

Mon- no one told me I was overly loquacious (When the future Mrs THT met my mom for the first time circa 1977, my mom privately told her "he was a quiet child"). It's just a lot easier to not piss someone off if my mouth is shut.

You piss me off when it is shut! You're just fun, THT. Hope to see evidence that you're around more often.

Thank you Brother Jet! Help me be strawng!

Words NEVAH ascribed to Jet:

"He was a quiet child."

When I was at AU the IB was always the Friday after T'giving and I was happy when I moved back here that it was the week before

I was told by my seventh grade science teacher that you could power the whole city of Gadsden off of the energy provided by my mouth.

I never did like that woman. She was an Auburn fan too...

FSJ ...

She was just speaking truth to (non-hydroelectric) power.

The 92 game was on Thanksgiving as some recalled above. I think that took a little away from the game. Perhaps it was just because it was at Legion Field.

Outside of the 88 game I don't remember any other Friday games.

Maybe she was just calling you Green. :-)

I can find it in my soul to dislike people that throw bottles, whether they are Auburn or Alabama fans.

I must admit, it is easier to dislike Bama now that Saban is the coach. Beating Shula was like kicking a puppy.

I now go to the beach at Charleston, the week of T'giving and it is hard to leave! Had to come back early once when my daughter was on the flag line. They should make it more convenient for us that are addicted!

y'all excuse me; i must get 4 hours of work done in the next 90 minutes. Then it's a well deserved VACATION!!!

Where you going, THT?

Blogger War Eagle Girl said...

I never trust bammers who talk like Faker!

2:29 PM
Blogger Jet said...

WEG ...

As your creative writing teacher, I advise that you could have put a period after the word "Bammers" and would have had a more effective sentence.

"I never trust Bammers."

See, isn't that more effective?

Friday in 87, 88, 74

Thanksgiving also in 64

per quick perusal of the ever handy AU media guide.

FSJ, what really took away from the '92 game wasn't that it was played on T'giving, but that Auburn DIDN'T SCORE A SINGLE POINT. Oh the heartache and misery.

Faker gets a pass. As Bamers go, I consider him gifted:)

- 2nd part of the week, the Loveliest Village for A-Day. Haven't been to one of those boring games in 30+ years.

Confession time...

I hated Nick Saban when he was at LSU...It was an envious hate..but hate nonetheless.

Another confession. I liked Tuberville at Ole Miss and wanted him to replace Stallings.

Two steps down the aisle, FSJ.

Won't you finish the walk, and step into the light?

Harrison,
we had a lot of fun when our kids were about 12-14ish at the ruby mines near Franklin. It can get expensive, though, if you decide to turn your finds into jewelry. Sliding Rock can be a lot of fun with the right water level:

We aren't lake people, so I can't offer much help there.
