Coaching Spotlight: Tracy Rocker

TRACY QUINTON ROCKER
Age: 43 (born 4/9/66)
College: B.A. from Auburn, 1992.
Playing career: Spent his career at Auburn, signing in 1986 and earning a slew of awards for his work. He later spent time in the NFL with Washington and spent a short period of time with Orlando of the World League.

Coaching career:
•Auburn, defensive line (current)
•Ole Miss, defensive line (2008)
•Arkansas, defensive line (2003-07)
•Cincinnati, defensive line (2002)
•Troy State, defensive line (1997-2001)
•West Alabama, defensive line (1995-96)
•Auburn High, defensive coordinator (1992-94)

Mentor:
Rocker has identified several. It was Larry Blakeney, though, who gave Rocker the biggest lift -- including a job (in 1997) at Troy University.

Previous Auburn experience:
Rocker was an outstanding defensive tackle for the Tigers and was the first lineman to win the Lombardi and Outland awards in the same season.

Coaching philosophy:
Rocker is a tough guy. That's the bottom line. It's not born out of hostility. Rocker played under Pat Dye and the two men use a similar approach toward football. They want results. In Rocker's mind, all the talking in the world can't touch the value of trial-and-error experience on the field.

To that end, Rocker is more motivator than strategist. Several defensive linemen spent the spring telling tales of how different things had become. Gone are the days of technique-oriented assessments. Rocker isn't too worried about hand placement or leverage. He'll adjust them if necessary, but he's not grading on that. He believes each player has his own way to best affect the offensive. Rocker gives his players the freedom to find that avenue and perfect it.

Mike Blanc provides an ideal example. Blanc is a bull rusher. That's his thing. Former assistants Don Dunn and Terry Price pushed Blanc to develop different methods to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt rushing lanes. Rocker, though, has worked with Blanc to enhance his bull rush -- believing the bull rush provides Blanc his best chance for a positive outcome.

Rocker doesn't make players conform to his specifications. He adapts to theirs.

Like most position coaches, Rocker is keen on building personal relationships with his players. Players say he's remarkably blunt behind closed doors and on the field, but doesn't embarrass players in front of their teammates. He screams rarely -- even on the field.

Personality profile:
Nearly 20 years after his career ended, Rocker still is an imposing presence. He's a big man, a strong man, a heavy man. He has a look that screams: I'd hate to be a bouncer if this guy goes off in a club.

He's careful with his words. He doesn't believe in criticizing players publicly, so it's rare that reporters get a glimpse of Rocker's true opinions. He speaks highly of everyone.

With that said, he's not a happy-go-lucky guy. Rocker is task-oriented. I don't see him laugh very often.

He's an important cog in the Tigers' recruiting enterprise. Rocker plays the realist role, meaning he works opposite of Trooper Taylor and his remarkably sunny demeanor. Rocker tells recruits that being great requires a ton of work. Recruits often see him as the anchor -- the guy whose opinions are most real and, to many, most valuable. Recruiting is 90% flash and 10% substance.

Rocker provides most of that 10%.

Sorry, Eddie, I just went back and read that you were there too. Tell me some of your greatest times.

Not Scottie, but you learn about the campus, what Auburn is about, fight song and cheers, the Auburn Creed and kind of what to expect as an incoming freshman. When I was there, you ended up rooming with other and got to meet other incoming freshman. It was a fun time.

thanks Eddie for being me for a minute.

after 18 long years of dreaming of going to Auburn for college, Camp War Eagle was just the first step of making it till September. i remember heading up to the Plains on Thurs. or Friday before that '96 LSU game at home and being so excited when i stopped for gas that i locked my keys in my Blazer. don't worry, i broke in and made it safely. :)

Nothing like a staff meeting to kill a good mood on a Wednesday.

I'm proud of our coaches. Its fun scaring the bejesus out of the bammies. The obsession is just laughable.

Auburn is mentioned NINE times on the crimsonconfidential front page. Equal to the number of times they mentioned bama, or alabama.

Here's a gem from the lead bammer, eric stennet:

Milliner said he based his decision on five factors: the program, the coaching staff, early playing time and education

Uhhh.. yep. that's five, eric.

Staff meetings is one thing I don't miss about working at a bigger company. I swear in construction you have staff meetings all the time without any time to actually accomplish the goals of the meeting before the next meeting.

Good morning, Sensi. If it will improve your mood, I'll pause for a minute of uninterrupted bama hatred.

I did not find camp war eagle to be very fun. They tried to teach us cheers and stuff, but there was nothing to cheer for, so I was all like, "This is dumb." I even let out a few "Roll Tides" to annoy those around me.

I was not into all the kumbaya/bonding with incoming freshman stuff they had going on, but that's just me. I found many of the counselors’ cheesy cheeriness annoying. However, one of my best friends loved it and ended up being a counselor a few years later. Different strokes.

I loved the file footage that WSFA showed of Milliner the other night. The picture painted a thousand words.

Michael wears the Cone of Shame, he is not the Alpha Dog.

You would have to see Up to get it.

12:23 PM

Harrison, I am able to snort out the necessary obstructions while the cone is on. This has made for a pretty disgusting cone, but at least I am not picking my nose.

12:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

D. Miller, yes, I meant with the collar. My dog had to wear one of those after he had surgery several years ago so he wouldn't lick the surgery site. He ran into everything and if he looked down it would get stuck on the floor and that's when I thought he was going to give himself whiplash. It was actually quite comical.

12:28 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Luv,
Yes, he bumps into everything with the collar and has tripped himself and flipped himself getting it caught on the ground when he's playing. Its comical. There is water all over the place too. When he gets a drink and raises up, it drips all over the place.

I feel bad for him. I know it can't be comfortable.

It also hurts when he jumps up and wants to lick you and that cone scrapes across your face.

He got stuck because of it yesterday. He likes to lay under a chair and he somehow got it wedged under there. But when he woke up he couldn't get back out from under it because the cone was wedged in between the rails.

Since it is a slow day, what 5 players do you most look forward to watching for AU this fall(new or returning)? I'm thinking these guys..

1) ElToro Freeman- no explanation needed.

2) Onterio McCalebb- can he be the big-play man Auburn fans have waited for?

3) Lee Ziemba- he went from fantastic to awful in a year's time. I think the knee injury and offensive mess in general had lots to do with his play. Is he the most valuable player on the team considering OL depth?

4) The starting QB. Not trying to squirm out of naming one guy, but at this point, I have no idea who it will be. Burns? Caudle? Todd? Is Rollison really a serious threat to play?

5) Ben Tate- he has caught much grief from some fans for what he can't do. The problem is, he hasn't been the one calling the plays that don't seem to suit his abilities very well. Can Malzahn be the coach to give Ben the chance to show what he DOES do well?

If anyone would like to respond, I would love to hear your thoughts.

1:14 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Luv - I don't know what he does but given where he's doing it, I can make several assumptions. Each of which lead me to believe he's doing good things for us in some form or fashion.

1:17 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

1. Paterry Beasullivan
2. Tracy Rocker
3. Bo Jackson
4. Marcus McNeil
5. Ed King

I'm sure we can finagle a little more eligibility out of them.

1:21 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Good list Depressed:

My Five:

1. Tyrik Rollison- I truelly believe he has a better than average shot to be the opening day QB.

2. DeAngelo Benton- This offense will play WR's and you have to like the chances of him playing.

3. Emory Blake- See above.

4. Onterio McCalebb- He could be exciting to watch in this offense with his versitility.

5. Eltorro Freeman- Talk like Tarzan, play like....Tarzan?

Obviously i'm looking forward to the unknown's more so than the known's, but that is my list.

1. Kodi- I am really rooting for him. Like I have said..he's got something special.

2. Ben Tate-he's ready to break out!

3. Antonio Coleman- nuff said.

4. Phillp Pierre Louis (Frenchy)- Jay had some hype about his guy before last season started. I am really hoping he avoids injury.

5. Mario Fannin- again..nuff said..

1:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

My Top Five:

5. Lee Ziemba - which will happen first? will he attempt to permanently injure a teammate or jump offsides?

4. Wes Byrum - this guy sucks at kick the can

3. Mario Fannin - I'm going to devise a drinking game around how many times he coughs it up.

2. Kodi Burns - Another drinking game for his duck and run and pick throwing self.

1. Coach Chiznik - Will he make it past midseason? I hope so. Saban's got 42 points to hang on this neck.

3. Freeman-Small size for LB but tough, will he last the season?

4. Tate-Will he adjust to running up the middle instead of side to side?

5. Zeimba-Can he block out last year and progress?

It was tough to limit it to 5.

My top 5 (already here) players that I'm looking forward to watching this fall...
1. Lee Ziemba - Was solid his freshman year and was expected to make further strides in his 2nd season. A knee injury and a clusterf*** on offense derailed that. With added weight and his health, will he anchor the line?
2. Andrew McCain - The o-line is very thin, and has no established RT. Can the only senior on the line finally step up and take charge?
3. Josh Bynes - He has the size and speed to be unstoppable at MLB. Will he take on more of a leadership role and use his talents to wreak havoc?
4. Tim Hawthorne - Was highly touted coming out of HS. Some snags along the way and terrible coaching hasn't allowed him to meet those expectations yet. Can he step it up and become the go-to WR?
5. Airon Savage - How is the knee? Will he be 100%? We need his senior leadership in the secondary.

Top 5 position battles I will pay attention to this fall...
1. QB - For obvious reasons. We have to have 1 guy rise up and become a team leader.
2. Interior DL - With a thin LB corps, this group become vital to the success of our defense.
3. RB - Should be Tate's for the taking. But how many carries will Onterrio and Fannin get?
4. WR - Hawthorne, Zachery, Benton, Blake, etc. Who wants to step up and be playmakers?
5. RT - Somebody has to step up and claim it.

Top 5 incoming players I want to see this fall...
1. DeAngelo Benton - We need a playmaker at WR.
2. Eltoro Freeman - LB corps is thin, he has to produce.
3. Nick Fairley - See my above comments about the DL. Will he play inside or on the edge? Can he be the playmaker on the line to replace Sen'Derrick Marks?
4. Tyrik Rollison - Can he come in and make push for PT? How fast can he learn the offense?
5. Andre Harris - OL is so thin, he has to come in ready to play if needed.

Hi THT. Why would I want to watch the Red Wings (or the Pens)?

I watch teams, not sports. I have to have some interest in one of the teams or the game holds no attraction for me.

Norm- If you will it, they will come.

NoVa - that's the way I am with NBA. The only NBA I ever watch is the Finals, and then only if the Spurs are there.

But hockey, I'll watch every playoff game I can no matter who's playing, no matter which round.

THT- How did you get into hockey like that? That is some serious dedication.

Eddie - it started with 1980 Olympics
then we lived in Pittsburgh for 13 months during which time they won 2 Cups; then came NHL Center ice in the mid 90s

That make sense. I believe it would be tough to grow that kind of love for it living down here in the south.

it's a lot more fun to play. I tried ice hockey at a rink in East Cobb, but I never could learn how to stop. I'm retarded on ice skates, but much more proficient on inline skates. Roller hockey is more fun than skiing or playing football.

THT- I agree with the inline skate hockey comment. I played a lot of that in high school with a bunch of friends. WE had a singled tennis court that we would take the nets down put up goals and play for hours. It was a blast.

As for what is occurring in terms of Bama violations, it really don't matter to me. Now, should the NCAA lay the smack down, well, then there is the potential for some humor. For instance, paying a coach $4 Million to coach a team that can't go to a bowl or be shown on TV would be hilarious. That would be a real knee slapper there.

I don't know of Jonathan, as I am not a regular listener, except what I have heard here.

I'll catch 5 minutes in the a.m., and then whatever lunchtime allows me. As started before, I don't support the afternoon show.

Jonathan was the tool that was on two days ago in the AM and said he wrote for Scout and BamaMag as an intern. Sounded more like he was 14 years old though.

I listen in the AM on my 4 mile drive from the house to work and the lunch bunch only from driving to and from lunch. Never listen to the afternoon show.

Norm - Thank you ... THANK you for that wonderful "IF" link. I especially love the "get into the mood to speak a song by lighting up a cigarette" thing that Telly does so so well. Truly truly awesome performance.

On another note, yesterday afternoon 680 am in Atlanta had Coach Rocker on. It sounds like he's waiting for some guys to step up, and is concerned with the D line depth. I find it interesting that they have him on after Mr JGT put the bio on here. Perhaps they're checking the HABOTN for their material now. Incidently 680 is in the Auburn network although I've never heard them broadcast a game.

The Braves got substantially better yesterday. They will be in the running for the division all season.

Can't say I'm a Braves fan ...

But it's a business. The Braves had a million reasons to make the break.

Is it a sweet way to end the story? Nope. But it's real.

7:38 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tommy.....I've picked up the AU game on 680. Sometimes in the fall, the WS preempts us. I'm not sure that they carry all the games against lessor opponents either.

Glavine's fastball was in the low 80's without much movement. The Braves need pitchers on the roster. Maybe if the Braves were without chance at the playoffs and if he had taken almost zero salary, then the Braves could have done the farewell thingy.

I say that if a pro wants to go out with a farewell and he can still contribute to the team during the farewell, that's great. Because of the salary these guys demand, the team doesn't need to compromise a season just for a farewell tour.

C'mon Tommy G take it like a man and we will luv ya.

7:42 AM
Blogger wartiger said...

Morning Hotties, I kinda hate to hear that about Glavine. I don't watch the baseball much anymore but back when I did he was one of my favorite players. I remember the days of Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux. I guess that was the early 90's. I also liked Penneldton, Crimedog, Sid Bream..it was fun..I don't know if I could tell you one person on the Braves roster now..Best of luck to Tommy though. That team also had a relief pitcher that was another Rocker you may not wanna run into at a club. He used to sprint out of the bull pin. Anyway just reminiscing..

7:57 AM
Blogger wartiger said...

How could I mention that team and not mention David Justice..whatever happened to him?

Blogger Norm said...

Morning Hotties happy Thursday.

Jet - chains? They've been moved.

mrtommy - you're quite welcome, though partial credit should go to Jet for saying something which reminded me that bit existed. I posted a couple of links on my FB which are sure to get you (collectively speaking) going. If they don't, well then there's a problem.

Anytime I've tried to pick up a game on 680, it seems to have been preempted by something else. I haven't found that to have put a very big crimp in my weekend. I can usually pick it up on XM if it's not on TV.

7:59 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Oh yeah, the Atlanta Auburn Club is hosting a pre-Kickoff event at the Cobb Galleria on 7/16 and Tracy Rocker will be one of the featured AU people there. I don't remember the other specifics but if you're interested, let me know and I'll pass it on.

8:02 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I was a HUGE Braves fan but I haven't watched baseball since the Braves won the Series. That was about the time I got NHL Center Ice. Try turning to baseball after watching hockey. What a snoozer! I'd still love for them to win the Series again.

8:16 AM
Blogger Norm said...

THT - I love me some baseball and will watch any level of play at anytime. I took my son to the muni-park just down the road and we watched some soccer practice and a baseball game. Actually, I was primarily watching my son to make sure he didn't get into anything (like the dugout) he shouldn't. We're standing at the fence right between some bleachers and the dugout and hangout there about 15 minutes or so before he remembers that he's at the park and then want to go to the playground. As it turned out, I'd been standing right next to Javy Lopez all that time and didn't even realize it.

As to hockey, I don't understand it, I don't know anything about it other than you want the puck in the opponent's goal. My employer happens to own a Suite along with some EXCELLENT seats at Philips Arena (home of Thrashers) and I've been able to go to probably 6 hockey games (and alot more basketball) there. I can tell you this, I never have any idea what's going on but it's an absolute blast to watch in person.

Sorry to everyone else for the long post.

8:28 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Norm - it only takes a few minutes to learn the basic rules of hockey. But I wouldn't suggest you get involved...your baseball passion will suffer!

re: soccer...did anyone else watch the US team look horrible last night?

8:38 AM
Blogger wartiger said...

Norm- When I graduated basic training in Texas our reward was a ticket to a minor league hockey game in San Antonio..you are right..hockey on tv is hard to watch but live is freakin awesome..I got a bobble head too..

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I sure wish my employer had a suite at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Actually, I'd prefer my employer get a suite in the new arena in Pittsburgh. Neither is going to happen.

...oops. Did I say Pittsburgh? I meant a suite in the Joe Louis arena in DETROIT! GO RED WINGS!

Work getting in the way of the HABOTN wathc again. I guess my problem with the Auburn games on 680 was that I was trying to find those non premier games, since they weren't on tv.

As for Glavine, I'm not sure if he would have been able to do it, but it seems like you could have at least given him a start or two to let him know he isn't quite there any longer. I think, and yes it's just my opinion, the organization owes it to the hall of famer to be. I mean a million bucks in today's MLB is a drop. What's also going to be interesting is what they are going to do with Jordan Shafer now that they picked up Nate Mclouth. He's evidently a gold glove, allstar center fielder with four years left on his contract. So next year I guess it's going to be Francouer v Shafer.
