Coaching Spotlight: Tracy Rocker
TRACY QUINTON ROCKER
Age: 43 (born 4/9/66)
College: B.A. from Auburn, 1992.
Playing career: Spent his career at Auburn, signing in 1986 and earning a slew of awards for his work. He later spent time in the NFL with Washington and spent a short period of time with Orlando of the World League.
Coaching career:
•Auburn, defensive line (current)
•Ole Miss, defensive line (2008)
•Arkansas, defensive line (2003-07)
•Cincinnati, defensive line (2002)
•Troy State, defensive line (1997-2001)
•West Alabama, defensive line (1995-96)
•Auburn High, defensive coordinator (1992-94)
Mentor:
Rocker has identified several. It was Larry Blakeney, though, who gave Rocker the biggest lift -- including a job (in 1997) at Troy University.
Previous Auburn experience:
Rocker was an outstanding defensive tackle for the Tigers and was the first lineman to win the Lombardi and Outland awards in the same season.
Coaching philosophy:
Rocker is a tough guy. That's the bottom line. It's not born out of hostility. Rocker played under Pat Dye and the two men use a similar approach toward football. They want results. In Rocker's mind, all the talking in the world can't touch the value of trial-and-error experience on the field.
To that end, Rocker is more motivator than strategist. Several defensive linemen spent the spring telling tales of how different things had become. Gone are the days of technique-oriented assessments. Rocker isn't too worried about hand placement or leverage. He'll adjust them if necessary, but he's not grading on that. He believes each player has his own way to best affect the offensive. Rocker gives his players the freedom to find that avenue and perfect it.
Mike Blanc provides an ideal example. Blanc is a bull rusher. That's his thing. Former assistants Don Dunn and Terry Price pushed Blanc to develop different methods to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt rushing lanes. Rocker, though, has worked with Blanc to enhance his bull rush -- believing the bull rush provides Blanc his best chance for a positive outcome.
Rocker doesn't make players conform to his specifications. He adapts to theirs.
Like most position coaches, Rocker is keen on building personal relationships with his players. Players say he's remarkably blunt behind closed doors and on the field, but doesn't embarrass players in front of their teammates. He screams rarely -- even on the field.
Personality profile:
Nearly 20 years after his career ended, Rocker still is an imposing presence. He's a big man, a strong man, a heavy man. He has a look that screams: I'd hate to be a bouncer if this guy goes off in a club.
He's careful with his words. He doesn't believe in criticizing players publicly, so it's rare that reporters get a glimpse of Rocker's true opinions. He speaks highly of everyone.
With that said, he's not a happy-go-lucky guy. Rocker is task-oriented. I don't see him laugh very often.
He's an important cog in the Tigers' recruiting enterprise. Rocker plays the realist role, meaning he works opposite of Trooper Taylor and his remarkably sunny demeanor. Rocker tells recruits that being great requires a ton of work. Recruits often see him as the anchor -- the guy whose opinions are most real and, to many, most valuable. Recruiting is 90% flash and 10% substance.
Rocker provides most of that 10%.

I love our Big Cat Coaches and I substantially hate bama
and that's one BIG CAT!!!
I want you to meet my son one day.
running back?
I thought he was a d line coach?
Jay GT - That's wonderful. Thanks so much. Check the first line of coaching career
Fixed.
Hating UAT is ...
Substantialicious!
Enjoyed that write up very much Jay G. Hope the trip is going well.
Interesting change of philosophy in coaching methods. Also, it is my understanding he will coach both DE and DT. Is that correct? Playing-wise, he was probably the most dominant defensive player I personally saw play at Auburn. Unblockable with one man, almost as unblockable being double-teamed.
Tracy Rocker - ranks right beside Terry Beasley as my all-time favorite AU players.
Two things in my mind stand out about The Rock ...
1. His needless injury at the end of the blowout loss to FSU in 1987. We were down four touchdowns, and he was on the field. He blew out his knee and missed the rest of the season. Never complained a peep.
2. His classy handling of his teammate doing him wrong. Kevin Porter, who signed with a rogue agent, took a friend with him on a party weekend with said agent and told the guy it was Tracy Rocker. It was not. Rocker focused his anger on the agent. Ultimately, he got his name cleared.
If Rocker ever goes off up in tha club, I want to be there....and I want him on my side.
Oh, no!
Will just Scotted the thread.
love me some Tracy Rocker. definitely a fav of mine growing up.
And so early too...what a shame.
Rocker was a DE, but we ran a 3-4 bacak then. The 1988 starting d-line was Rocker and Benji Roland at the ends, with Ron Stallworth in the middle.
That defense pitched 3 straight shutouts and gave up 20 points total in the two LOSSES that year.
Nice Rocker thread. Love having him back on the Plains.
FYI, there's a 3 hr concert on hulu.com that the Dave Matthews Band had last nite to promote their new album that dropped today. pretty sweet.
DMB?
Unless a band is prepared to cover Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry, George Jones, or The Gap Band, it's hard for me to get excited.
Why did AU lose to LSU 7-6 in 1988? Because the defense didn't do it's job. That was Tracy Rocker's explanation. How can you not love and admire a man like that?
A night that will life infamy, THT.
As crazy as Lester Gump's win in 2007 was, it won't match the 1988 game.
Evah.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Enjoyed the Rocker profile, Jay G.
If anyone knows the ASU/Kalvin person's boss could you arrange to have him called back to his real job and get him off the Roundtable?
This will be a long week on the roundtable with Doug gone.
Jet - I can imagine songs from their first set; Rock&Roll, The Race Is On, My Ding-a-Ling, and You Dropped Da Bomb.
I'd like to see that.
T rock is definitely my favorite coach on the defensive side. I like that he's adapting to the players' strengths. Defense shouldn't be about thinking, but about athleticism.
I love what a S. Cal LB said a few years back. They were facing a rushing QB and the media asked him what their plan was to contain said QB. He said we're just going play our normal D and if the QB takes off we're going to hunt him down and kill him. Of course that QB was Vince Young and he ran all over them, but still, that's a great defensive mentality. :)
By the way Jay, I saw a gallardo roadster yesterday...thought you might appreciate that.
Thanks again, JGT, for the awesome work.
Second set:
Misty Morning Hop
Roll over Beethoven
The Grand Tour
Early in the Morning
I don't want to kill the QBs.
Last year we'd get the starter QB out, and the backup QB would beat us. Happened more than once.
Besides, it would be a little messy.
And by 'Us / We', I mean Auburn. The little man inside my head tells me that I am part of the team just because I went to Auburn.
The dude on the roundtable with Moon is horrible. Can't believe I heard them argue for 10 minutes without either having a point.
If Doug or Josh is gone, it needs to be Jay G with the remaining host.
If Jay G is not available, they just need to pour Coke on the control board, and give it up until both are back.
I believe that was the longest roundtable ever.
Some random thoughts on a hot afternoon:
Tracy Rocker is a great name.
I like his philosophy of working with the player's strengths and natural inclination.
"You Dropped a Bomb on Me" was one of "our songs" when my husband and I were courtin'--I still like it. My son put it on a CD mix he did for me a couple of years ago--thoughtful of him.
I saw a white Crossfire two nights ago here in the Capital. Was a Hottie driving it?
This matches my impressions of rocker. If we could decide the Iron Bowl by just having two coaches fight it out, Rocker would be the one fighting for us. Of course, we might have to allow Bama two coaches to make it competitive.
Rocker always seemed like a nice guy, kind of quiet, but when you saw him on the field, watch out. Someone was going to be hurting, and it wasn't him.
Finebaum opens with the following:
Auburn needs stunts to measure up to Saban's inherent greatness.
Did Auburn break NCAA rules?
If they did, it won't be as big a deal as pending NCAA sanctions on Alabama?
Auburn is only in the news because there is nothing going on and the sports world is waiting on Alabama's NCAA news.
Sure, Paul. Sure.
Xaff, I have it worse. I never attended Auburn but consider myself an integral part of the team.
If Rocker ever lost it at a club, I see the bouncer just allowing him to do whatever he could just to save his own neck.
What ever happened to David Rocker?
Great job on the bio Jay..Thanks!!
Did I see yesterday that the roundtable was still talking about the Turner Gill stuff and the AU is racist? I only ask because unless I'm mistaken we have more African coaches than any other team in the SEC. I'm sure this point has been made...just sayin...
You read correctly, wartiger.
That criticism comes from a guy working at Alabama State, well known for its own ethical practices.
nobody cares but i'm just saying i won't be able to listen to the rest of this week's Roundtable's shows
the end
Mon - you're wrong. I care.
Yeah, The SnoreTable is over for me this week as well.
Norm. You're my favorite.
Don't tell the others.
David Rocker is now a pastor in Georgia. :)
Well, I guess I have to hate Norm now with a ginormous fury.
Norm...
What's it been, a week or so? I still laugh at the jazz flute every time!
j-z,
She says that to all the Norms.
ginormous fury is a pretty big fury
that could consume a person
I am a ginormous kind of guy.
hawt
j-z - please don't go into a PBR induced rage & stream on me as referenced in an earlier post.
ehyou - yep, the current avatar was inspired by Mon, in reference to a "rock hard flute" comment.
Thanks, ScottieB.
Norm...I wouldn't waste PBR on you. Meister Brau maybe.
Here's a weird request.
I wish I could find out / know who is the agent for each of these coaches?
PBR & Meister Brau bring to mind when there was actually Generic "Beer" and "Lite Beer" back around 83/84. That was some bad stuff right there.
some women inspire song and poetry
i inspire avatars
And one rap, Monica.
How quickly you forget.
Rocker was one of the first football players I saw up close as a freshmen. That was back in the days when the football team spent all their free time in Haley. I remember calling my mom that night and telling her that I didnt know humans could get that big!
Just so I'm clear, this avatar is in no way inspired by Monica. I don't care to have Monica refer to me in unkind acronym format. I just happen to like the character.
An entire rap inspired by me? I don't think so.
And please forgive me out there, but someone actually did write a song for me.
Pics or it didn't happen.
I assume that means you can prove your paternity?
welcome Sensi. i have a thing for stalking former AU All-Americans. ha.
speaking of All-Americans,
#67, ED KING
Mon,
Was it the pina colada song?
yes
Mon - yes I can, so you can scratch that one from your list.
random puppet hour trivia:
Did you know that 3 former AU All-Americans wore #88?
Red Phillips

I'd be more inclined to think that rather than Rupert Holme's 'Pina Colada Song' it was more likely his song 'Him'.
Is Rupert Holmes a threadkiller? Apparently he is. This being the case; I believe I'll go home, hook the trailer up to the Trek and take my boy for a ride.
Good day to you.
How apropos that the announcement of the death of the thread on Tracy Rocker was on Norm's post No. 74.
I apologize, Jet. You did write an entire rap for me. Clearly, I am not worthy.
No, we're not worthy to be on the same blog with you.
(forlornly)
Puppet Hour just ain't the same without Michael and Harrison.

you're correct ehyou. it is puppet hour!
And today for puppet hour I say nobody post
Now that's more like it.
Let the rollicking begin!!!
Oh, OK. That's cool too.
YOU BLEW IT!!!
I think Scottie b killed the thread when he answered his own trivia question.

one of the VHS tapes i have converted to DVD is the 1988 iron bowl. rock blows through the line and sacks the QB on the first play of the game. that whole DL was a fav of mine. stallworth, roland, rocker they all made each other better.
rocker should tell his guys, if they can impress him enough, he might consider letting one of them wear his #74 jersey. i wouldn't have a problem with it as long as it is rock's decision.
Hola from the San diego wild animal park. I like rhinos.

I like them monkies with big red asses
Wow it's pouring now in Auburn. I think lightning just struck the new arena construction.
...and struck again
Teams starting 0-2 on the road in Stanley Cup Finals are 1/32 in their quest for The Cup. That means the Pens now have a 3% chance of winning The Cup. Why prolong the agony.
Go Red Wings!!!
95 days and counting (down)
DIME SIZE HAIL ON CAMPUS!!
i armwrestled T. Rock once and almost won
That's nothing, Harrison. I armwrestled myself once and almost won.
T Rock shined my shoes one time, and I stiffed him. He was too scared to demand I pay or tell the cops or anything.
you should try shining T Rock with your shoes. That takes some nerve.
I wear sandpaper shoes, so they would make him bloody, not shiny.
The best thing about T Rock is that he would never go coach at that other school.
Unless it meant a lot more money for him and he had just been fired by the people trying to rehire him.
yeah, except for that, but when does that ever happen?
not in the past million nanoseconds
I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS I LOVE RED WINGS (does anybody know if reverse psychology works?)
nanoseconds aren't real, THT. I don't believe in a time unit that I can't count in.
I also don't believe in number I haven't counted to. Thus, I deem all numbers above 1,689 to be fake.
I love hot wings. Is there a hockey team called the Hot Wings? If so, I am a big fan.
I hope the same isn't true of nanodiamonds, those sparkly jewels found in carbon spherules.
For 29th anniversary, I think I'll get Mrs THT a nanodiamond ring.
1,689 + 1 = ?
there are red hot dogs called "red hots". They are curiously red and surprisingly tasty
Hockey Hot Wings? not yet. But there's a team for sale in Phoenix. You can name them Hot Wings if you are the new owner.
I will be having a biscuit in its cooked dough form tonight in my future as I am attending a Biscuits game.
Shouldn't the Hot Wings franchise be in Buffalo?
THT, if you can see the nanodiamond, then it is real. If not, well, just buy a box with air in it and tell your wife a nanodiamond is in it and she will probably fall for it.
Red hots are already the name of those little red cinnamon type thingies some people put in Christmas cookies, so I object to naming a hot dog a Red hot. They should call it a red rocket.
for dessert I just ate the last of Sunday's homemade biscuits with McCutheon's apple butter. It was like eating something really, really good, only better.
well I can't call it that cause that's slang for a dog boner
biscuits don't exist either.
I am out fellas. Enjoy yourselves.
re: red hot vs red rocket, I concur.
i just changed my vote
michale left and can't change his vote..therefore Michael enjoys red rockets
I will have the nanodiamond mounted on a ring under a nanoelectron microscope.
I've got some work today before I cheer for the RED WINGS in an hour. Catch y'all later.
Sure am glad I changed my vote before I left!
*to do
counting nanoseconds is easy...
one billion
two billion
three billion...
THT ...
Good luck against the Penguins. I think you've got in the bag.
Is Jet the new Norm?

Tracy Rocker will be coaching at THE University of Alabama in two years!
Just like James Willis, he wants to be a part of a winner.
Come on over, Tracy. We'll forgive you for your Barn ties.
Roll Tide!
10 minutes til puck drop.. GO RED WINGS!!!
I bet the Red Wings take it in four. Penguins don't even deserve to be on the same ice as the Red Wings.
THT- you are confusing me...I don't know jack about hockey but I coulda sworn that your team (the pens) was the the wings..unless something has changed...hmmm..
Salsa Shark- you are a cousin humper..nuff said..
*your teams was playing against the wings (proofread wartiger!! proofread)
Did anyone listen to the morning call in show in MOntgomery today with the 'journalist intern' from Scout and BamaMag?
What a homer. He was such a goof.
He says the UA president knows that he told a friend of his family what it was. Football was losing 4 schollys over 2 years. He may be right, I don't care, but does anyone thing a 'journalist' would come on a local call in show and say that when it is not public info yet?
Just thought it was a stupid conversation.
He also said the the UA campus was one item that attracted recruits. He had jsut left the campus after being on the 5 year plan and it was renowned throughout America for its' beauty. When McKnight said he thought the AU camppus was better, the nut head said that is becaue McKnight was biased since he lived there.
I almost spewed my diet Coke.
I'm baaaaccckkk!!!
And because I know you're interested; no, the son and I didn't go on a bikeride since it's danged hot. We played inside then ran some errands, ate and played at Chik-fil-A then home. I'm beat.
(slang for dog boner made me laugh right out loud)
WTC - I did hear it and I think Eddie and Sensi were listening too. I seem to recall Sensi thinking he may know the guy.
Any news yet on the drawing?
And yes, you're right, the dude was quite a tool.
No news on the drawing yet.
I did ride tonight at 6:00. 25 miles and finished at a pace of 18 mph. Getting better at it. May be looking for a triathlon one day.
WTC,
I have audio of that guy if you'd like.
Email me.
Maybe tomorrow will be your day.
I didn't ride because I'd thought I'd hook up the kiddie-trailer to the back of the Trek and take the boy out for a ride, but when I got out into my office parking lot I decided it was probably too hot for the boy. I have an older Trek 8000 Mountain bike, I've actually been thinking recently of getting myself ready for a duathalon next year. Though, I feel near 100% confident that I will NOT be getting ready for it atop the 8000.
Sensi - did he call back a 2nd time? I heard Barry reading his email and challenged the guy to call back but I lost the stream during the email reading. If he called back and you have that audio I'd like to hear it.
He did, Norm. And he called the Roundtable.
THT,
I know this was several posts back, but this year is also my 29th anniversary, and I would not like a nanodiamond. I would like a megadiamond, or maybe two. Just sayin...
When are we getting rid of this salsa shark douche?
If you all want to hear the caller "Jonathan" who supposedly writes for Scout and thinks Auburn is grasping at straws, Click Here to download the audio file. It's part of his first call, the entire second call with reaction and the third call with reaction. Enjoy!
I thought Jay dumped him yesterday, but he is back
wartiger - see 5:46 pm post
cincy - it's actually only our 28th this year, so I guess the nanodiamond will be ok ;-)
Looks like salsa believes Bama wants to collect traitors. Somehow that works for me.
Jhag, I agree with you on Shark, but look on the brightside...everytime he posts I feel better about going to Auburn over Alabama and assorted others. I also sometimes literally LOL at his posts and that's good considering it rarely happens from a stranger on the web.
Also, I was recruited, had offers from others and signed with Auburn. War Eagle!
You have to appreciate people like Salsa. He does remind me why I would never want to be a Bambi.
Well, maybe my Red Wings can win Thursday
THT- ahhh I see..if it works you may have to become a bammer for the rest of next season ;)...just kidding...I wouldn't put that on my worst enemy..
I thought Jay banned him from here. Maybe I read it wrong.
His life must have been miserable when they were down the past few years. Now with one good year, he gets all juiced up and wants to run his mouth. If they lose he may jump off a ledge.
nope, he just deleted a post of his
i wouldn't hold my breath waiting on him to be banned
g'night Hotties...check y'all tomorrow..just for some substance..any guesses on who Jay will do his next bio on?
I'll go Jay Boulware...
Naw, asking him to be banned is like feeding the Mog-wai water after midnight...just take him for what he is...(insert clever adjective here).
Cowardice of him/her to not allow others to see who he/her is.
Put me down for Thigpen in the next coach pool, wartiger...
I'll go with Trooper as the next bio.
Biscuit rain out ...
Back at the Hangar.
Still hatin'
Sponge in the house
wtc - i'm just soooo happy you allow us to see you
where the heck you been, Mr. Worthy?
Mon. Nice pic. Been snoopin around gathering info on those we hate the most. Lot of smoke, and some fire, and it's getting hotter.
Thank you, WorthyOne. You're too kind. Just watch yourself when playing with fire...
The Sabenator will be the one dealing with the fire. Bookgate, a drop in the bucket.
Mr. ...Worthy- you're such a tease!
2nd Frasier now on Lifetime
Tony Montana has a pile of coke on his desk.
I'm betting this doesn't end well for him.
Good night.
That Jonathan clip is hilarious. I am very impressed with is journalistic integrity. You know, Walter Cronkite use to be a big sports fan and was noted for calling into radio talk shows talking crap.
HABOTN cliff's notes for 2nite:
rocker = greatness
? > 1689
red wings/hot wings/red hots/red rockets/dog boners

Good Morning Hotties!!!
Happy Hump Day.
Morning Eddie! and all the other great Hotties!
Luv -we're halfway there!
chip chip = great Cliff notes!
Good morning, Hotties! If we get through today, it's all downhill from there!
Jay G, thanks again for the great writeup on Rocker! Have another great day in Disney!
Ever since I've been posting on here, Spongeworthy is always saying how there's smoke and fire coming out of Tuscaloser. I haven't seen anything yet. Not hatin'. Just sayin'.
That's right, TarHeel! Think we'll make it?
Luv - with grit, determination, a fighting spirit, and Coach Rocker, how can we not make it? Watch out hump day, here we come!
Great work on the profile JGT - It's great Rocker is back home.
LT
Tar Heel, I thought you wanted the Penguins to win...
THT is successfully using reverse psychology.
Luv, Sponge is not the only one saying these things about Bama. I listened to the first portion of Finebaum yesterday, and he said that he had been sent a folder full of details about what had been going on in Gadsden. He didn't blow it off as you would expect him to, said he was still studying the information. The new co-host of Sportscall here in Auburn(his name escapes me) has been saying something is coming down for months. I believe things are happening, but I doubt the will to investigate them. We will see what does or doesn't happen.
I used to like the Red Wings, but they've just gotten too good. I now consider them the evil empire and I can no longer pull for them.
I have friends that swear up and down that the NCAA is about go Old Testament on the Cousin Humpers just like the Lord did on the prophets of Baal, the Egyptian Army in the Red Sea, and numerous other of occasions. They, too, like Brother Sponge, are talking beyond the textbook scam.
I want to believe, but I need a sign.
I have no idea what to think about possible Bama violations. It's either a lot of substance or another example of the self-perpetuating rumor mill. Only time will tell.
What I do know is that I hate Bama and I hope they are decimated. Laughing at Bama is one of my very favorite pastimes.
jet...
You'll want to reschedule your Biscuit visit for the 11th - Gump celebrities John and Barry are going to be there. Any heckling would be appreciated.
I don't know if Bama is or is not cheating, but something needs to be done about the Forest Fire that is getting out of control.
Can someone tell me:
Is John or Barry the goofy looking one with darker hair.
(I'm guessing John)
Brother Ehyou,
I am sorry. I am otherwise booked on the 11th. I will be visited the Holy Land with ElTurbo for Camp War Eagle.
Plus, I would view that effort as a waste of time. They would enjoy it as some sort of validation.
Morning Hotties - we're almost halfway through the toil and trouble.
ehyou - yes, it's John.
Jet - don't worry yourself looking for a sign. As of about 24 hours ago thanks to the kind, informative writer for Bamamag and caller to 740, we now have it on good authority that not much is going to happen. Terribly sorry to burst your bubble.
I am so jealous. Camp War Eagle would be a blast.
Camp War Eagle- Oh the days. Sensi is getting to live it all summer since he is getting paid to participate in it.
Speaking of Barry McKnight, why can't Auburn replace Rod Bramblet with him. I love Rod as a person, but he lacks big time in being able to paint a play on radio.
Eddie, can anyone really replace Jim Fyffe?
Norm ...
Can't say my bubble could be burst. It's not anywhere near fully inflated.
The young man, whose role model is BamaMag Tool, who has spent his life's work and total existence basking in the glow of the toxic waste that is the stench, corruption and arrogance that is UAT, doesn't qualify to have an opinion that registers on the Jet-O-Meter.
i met several of my best friends in college at Camp War Eagle (1996). good times. i think i still have my 'MISSION POSSIBLE' (play in the Mission Impossible movie that summer) t-shirt somewhere.
Jet, come on, tell us how you really feel!
Rod needs to go. He's a baseball guy.
Not sure Barry is the answer.
And, no, no one can replace Fyffe.
I've gotta go, but I've got faith that Norm is going to sing us a set from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.
Agreed, no one can replace Fyffe and no one will, but we deserve better than this. I have had the fortunes of meeting Rod several times, but he is not a football or basketball play by play guy. I like what I have heard from McKnight at Troy but I am open to anybody that can call a good game on radio.
down on mainstreet?
