Coaching Spotlight: Tracy Rocker

TRACY QUINTON ROCKER
Age: 43 (born 4/9/66)
College: B.A. from Auburn, 1992.
Playing career: Spent his career at Auburn, signing in 1986 and earning a slew of awards for his work. He later spent time in the NFL with Washington and spent a short period of time with Orlando of the World League.

Coaching career:
•Auburn, defensive line (current)
•Ole Miss, defensive line (2008)
•Arkansas, defensive line (2003-07)
•Cincinnati, defensive line (2002)
•Troy State, defensive line (1997-2001)
•West Alabama, defensive line (1995-96)
•Auburn High, defensive coordinator (1992-94)

Mentor:
Rocker has identified several. It was Larry Blakeney, though, who gave Rocker the biggest lift -- including a job (in 1997) at Troy University.

Previous Auburn experience:
Rocker was an outstanding defensive tackle for the Tigers and was the first lineman to win the Lombardi and Outland awards in the same season.

Coaching philosophy:
Rocker is a tough guy. That's the bottom line. It's not born out of hostility. Rocker played under Pat Dye and the two men use a similar approach toward football. They want results. In Rocker's mind, all the talking in the world can't touch the value of trial-and-error experience on the field.

To that end, Rocker is more motivator than strategist. Several defensive linemen spent the spring telling tales of how different things had become. Gone are the days of technique-oriented assessments. Rocker isn't too worried about hand placement or leverage. He'll adjust them if necessary, but he's not grading on that. He believes each player has his own way to best affect the offensive. Rocker gives his players the freedom to find that avenue and perfect it.

Mike Blanc provides an ideal example. Blanc is a bull rusher. That's his thing. Former assistants Don Dunn and Terry Price pushed Blanc to develop different methods to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt rushing lanes. Rocker, though, has worked with Blanc to enhance his bull rush -- believing the bull rush provides Blanc his best chance for a positive outcome.

Rocker doesn't make players conform to his specifications. He adapts to theirs.

Like most position coaches, Rocker is keen on building personal relationships with his players. Players say he's remarkably blunt behind closed doors and on the field, but doesn't embarrass players in front of their teammates. He screams rarely -- even on the field.

Personality profile:
Nearly 20 years after his career ended, Rocker still is an imposing presence. He's a big man, a strong man, a heavy man. He has a look that screams: I'd hate to be a bouncer if this guy goes off in a club.

He's careful with his words. He doesn't believe in criticizing players publicly, so it's rare that reporters get a glimpse of Rocker's true opinions. He speaks highly of everyone.

With that said, he's not a happy-go-lucky guy. Rocker is task-oriented. I don't see him laugh very often.

He's an important cog in the Tigers' recruiting enterprise. Rocker plays the realist role, meaning he works opposite of Trooper Taylor and his remarkably sunny demeanor. Rocker tells recruits that being great requires a ton of work. Recruits often see him as the anchor -- the guy whose opinions are most real and, to many, most valuable. Recruiting is 90% flash and 10% substance.

Rocker provides most of that 10%.

Interesting change of philosophy in coaching methods. Also, it is my understanding he will coach both DE and DT. Is that correct? Playing-wise, he was probably the most dominant defensive player I personally saw play at Auburn. Unblockable with one man, almost as unblockable being double-teamed.

Tracy Rocker - ranks right beside Terry Beasley as my all-time favorite AU players.

Two things in my mind stand out about The Rock ...

1. His needless injury at the end of the blowout loss to FSU in 1987. We were down four touchdowns, and he was on the field. He blew out his knee and missed the rest of the season. Never complained a peep.

2. His classy handling of his teammate doing him wrong. Kevin Porter, who signed with a rogue agent, took a friend with him on a party weekend with said agent and told the guy it was Tracy Rocker. It was not. Rocker focused his anger on the agent. Ultimately, he got his name cleared.

Rocker was a DE, but we ran a 3-4 bacak then. The 1988 starting d-line was Rocker and Benji Roland at the ends, with Ron Stallworth in the middle.

That defense pitched 3 straight shutouts and gave up 20 points total in the two LOSSES that year.

Why did AU lose to LSU 7-6 in 1988? Because the defense didn't do it's job. That was Tracy Rocker's explanation. How can you not love and admire a man like that?

T rock is definitely my favorite coach on the defensive side. I like that he's adapting to the players' strengths. Defense shouldn't be about thinking, but about athleticism.

I love what a S. Cal LB said a few years back. They were facing a rushing QB and the media asked him what their plan was to contain said QB. He said we're just going play our normal D and if the QB takes off we're going to hunt him down and kill him. Of course that QB was Vince Young and he ran all over them, but still, that's a great defensive mentality. :)

By the way Jay, I saw a gallardo roadster yesterday...thought you might appreciate that.

Some random thoughts on a hot afternoon:

Tracy Rocker is a great name.

I like his philosophy of working with the player's strengths and natural inclination.

"You Dropped a Bomb on Me" was one of "our songs" when my husband and I were courtin'--I still like it. My son put it on a CD mix he did for me a couple of years ago--thoughtful of him.

I saw a white Crossfire two nights ago here in the Capital. Was a Hottie driving it?

2:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

This matches my impressions of rocker. If we could decide the Iron Bowl by just having two coaches fight it out, Rocker would be the one fighting for us. Of course, we might have to allow Bama two coaches to make it competitive.

Rocker always seemed like a nice guy, kind of quiet, but when you saw him on the field, watch out. Someone was going to be hurting, and it wasn't him.

Finebaum opens with the following:

Auburn needs stunts to measure up to Saban's inherent greatness.

Did Auburn break NCAA rules?

If they did, it won't be as big a deal as pending NCAA sanctions on Alabama?

Auburn is only in the news because there is nothing going on and the sports world is waiting on Alabama's NCAA news.

Sure, Paul. Sure.

Xaff, I have it worse. I never attended Auburn but consider myself an integral part of the team.

I thought Jay banned him from here. Maybe I read it wrong.

His life must have been miserable when they were down the past few years. Now with one good year, he gets all juiced up and wants to run his mouth. If they lose he may jump off a ledge.

That Jonathan clip is hilarious. I am very impressed with is journalistic integrity. You know, Walter Cronkite use to be a big sports fan and was noted for calling into radio talk shows talking crap.

Good morning, Hotties! If we get through today, it's all downhill from there!

Jay G, thanks again for the great writeup on Rocker! Have another great day in Disney!

Ever since I've been posting on here, Spongeworthy is always saying how there's smoke and fire coming out of Tuscaloser. I haven't seen anything yet. Not hatin'. Just sayin'.

Luv, Sponge is not the only one saying these things about Bama. I listened to the first portion of Finebaum yesterday, and he said that he had been sent a folder full of details about what had been going on in Gadsden. He didn't blow it off as you would expect him to, said he was still studying the information. The new co-host of Sportscall here in Auburn(his name escapes me) has been saying something is coming down for months. I believe things are happening, but I doubt the will to investigate them. We will see what does or doesn't happen.

I used to like the Red Wings, but they've just gotten too good. I now consider them the evil empire and I can no longer pull for them.

I have friends that swear up and down that the NCAA is about go Old Testament on the Cousin Humpers just like the Lord did on the prophets of Baal, the Egyptian Army in the Red Sea, and numerous other of occasions. They, too, like Brother Sponge, are talking beyond the textbook scam.

I want to believe, but I need a sign.

7:20 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

I have no idea what to think about possible Bama violations. It's either a lot of substance or another example of the self-perpetuating rumor mill. Only time will tell.

What I do know is that I hate Bama and I hope they are decimated. Laughing at Bama is one of my very favorite pastimes.

You'll want to reschedule your Biscuit visit for the 11th - Gump celebrities John and Barry are going to be there. Any heckling would be appreciated.

7:28 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I don't know if Bama is or is not cheating, but something needs to be done about the Forest Fire that is getting out of control.

Blogger ehyou said...

Can someone tell me:

Is John or Barry the goofy looking one with darker hair.

(I'm guessing John)

7:58 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Brother Ehyou,

I am sorry. I am otherwise booked on the 11th. I will be visited the Holy Land with ElTurbo for Camp War Eagle.

Plus, I would view that effort as a waste of time. They would enjoy it as some sort of validation.

8:04 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Morning Hotties - we're almost halfway through the toil and trouble.

ehyou - yes, it's John.

Jet - don't worry yourself looking for a sign. As of about 24 hours ago thanks to the kind, informative writer for Bamamag and caller to 740, we now have it on good authority that not much is going to happen. Terribly sorry to burst your bubble.

8:08 AM
Blogger ehyou said...

I am so jealous. Camp War Eagle would be a blast.

8:09 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Camp War Eagle- Oh the days. Sensi is getting to live it all summer since he is getting paid to participate in it.

8:11 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Speaking of Barry McKnight, why can't Auburn replace Rod Bramblet with him. I love Rod as a person, but he lacks big time in being able to paint a play on radio.

8:12 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eddie, can anyone really replace Jim Fyffe?

8:14 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Norm ...

Can't say my bubble could be burst. It's not anywhere near fully inflated.

The young man, whose role model is BamaMag Tool, who has spent his life's work and total existence basking in the glow of the toxic waste that is the stench, corruption and arrogance that is UAT, doesn't qualify to have an opinion that registers on the Jet-O-Meter.

i met several of my best friends in college at Camp War Eagle (1996). good times. i think i still have my 'MISSION POSSIBLE' (play in the Mission Impossible movie that summer) t-shirt somewhere.

Jet, come on, tell us how you really feel!

8:16 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Rod needs to go. He's a baseball guy.

Not sure Barry is the answer.

And, no, no one can replace Fyffe.

8:16 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I've gotta go, but I've got faith that Norm is going to sing us a set from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band.

8:17 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Agreed, no one can replace Fyffe and no one will, but we deserve better than this. I have had the fortunes of meeting Rod several times, but he is not a football or basketball play by play guy. I like what I have heard from McKnight at Troy but I am open to anybody that can call a good game on radio.
