Coaching spotlight: Curtis Luper
CURTIS SCOTT LUPER
Age: 43 (born 1/22/66)
College: B.A. from Stephen F. Austin (communications), 1996; M.A. from Stephen F. Austin (communications), 1998.
Playing career: Spent three seasons as a tailback at Oklahoma State, 1984-86. After a six-year stay in the armed forces, Luper completed his final season of eligibility at Stephen F. Austin in 1993.
Coaching career:
•Auburn, running backs (current)
•Oklahoma State, running backs (2005-08)
•New Mexico, running backs (2002-04)
•Texas A&M-Commerce, defensive backs (1999-2001)
•McKinney (Tx.) High, running backs (1998)
•Stephen F. Austin, various roles (1995-1997)
Mentor:
Gene Chizik. Luper worked as a graduate assistant under Chizik at Stephen F. Austin.
Previous Auburn experience:
None.
Coaching philosophy:
Luper, at first glance, is the Tigers' least fiery coach. It's rare to hear him scold players or even raise his voice. His displeasure is communicated calmly via one-on-one conversations generally held on the field. He doesn't appear to be a stickler for "micro-technique," instead allocating most of his coaching efforts toward explaining errors and giving players a snapshot of how they contributed to a play's demise.
In psychological parlance, he's Carl Rogers to Eddie Gran's B.F. Skinner.
He's cerebral in his approach with players. Luper doesn't like to discuss depth charts because he's sensitive to the message that could send to reserves. He served as a college reserve behind Thurman Thomas and, later, Barry Sanders.
Luper also is a major element in the Tigers' recruiting enterprise. He is an accomplished networker who seems to know an unusually wide array of people -- or has a friend who knows a friend. He uses evolved relationships throughout the Midwest to learn about up-and-coming prospects. Auburn successfully plucked a pair of coveted recruits from Texas in February. WR Emory Blake and DL Nosa Eguae hadn't considered the Tigers prior to Luper's arrival.
Luper's recruiting acumen is intriguing because he isn't boastful. There is no bravado. He makes the connections and lets other members of the Tigers' staff (most notably Trooper Taylor, Tracy Rocker and Jeff Grimes) handle business from there. That construct yielded a strong 2009 signing class and has stoked Auburn's 2010 expectations.
Luper is central to that revival.
Personality profile:
Luper is among the brightest coaches I have met. He speaks carefully, though it's not because he's worried about potential repercussions. He wants to make sure he uses the correct words to explain his point. He's precise.
Luper often holds deep conversations that span well beyond football. That's not exactly universal among people in his profession. Talking with him, you get the sense that you're talking with an entertaining professor; not a football coach.
His moods are stable. Luper is Luper on the best days and worst days. He greets days with a smile. He seems unhurried and free of worry. He'd make a great mafia consigliére ... stable, thoughtful, calculating and aware.
He has much bigger projects ahead. I expect his stay at Auburn to be short because he has the skills to flourish as an offensive coordinator or head coach. His relatively late professional start (first meaningful job came in 1999) means he's less experienced than many early-40s coaches.
Still, his day is coming soon.

War Eagle #1!
Way to go WEG!
Military background will make him a tough read and a tough coach
Thanks, ehyou. Happens once in a while....guess our Dear Leader is too busy with the nukes
The pope is beautimus, btw.
Don't you love him?! He always has positive comments to make about having faith in the team...takes a lot of guts to dress up like that! I don't even know who he is! Maybe he's a Hottie!
Mafia Consigliére...my favorite HABOTN word of the day!
Not as fast in my old age...
Great job, JGT.
Is Luper working on PhD?
I love this guy, maybe he's Auburn's next OC after Malzahn gets promoted to a head coaching gig? I know I'm making lots of predictions at once but it makes sense.
every time I have seen a film of Luper speakign he has this "thing" going on licking his teeth.
just feaks me out a little.. sure he is a nice guy
I retro posted an item about the SEC payouts. Auburn (and every other school) got $11,080,000.
Check it out.
Ya gotta love 53 million for tv....
as it has been said before... football funds so many other sports...
I added this to the earlier post...
"ALSO OF NOTE: Jay Jacobs was named to the SEC's Executive Committee. He is the only athletic director on the seven-member committee."
Congrats, WEG!!!
Now, Luper...Here is the Coach I would like to hang out with for a while.
Way to go WEG. Proud of you representin' the Gump.
If Luper's the consigliere, then does that mean Trooper's gonna get gunned down at the toll booth?
'Cause if that's the way it's gonna turn out, I don't think I can take it.
Will the day come when a team(say Alabama), says we deserve more than other teams do? We bring in more money so we should be given a higher percentage of money. I hope not.
Teams get to keep a portion of their bowl revenue.
So that gives the more successful football programs some consolation ... so they don't feel like they're supporting Vanderbilt all the time.
At one point, I think bowl payouts were divided 14 ways -- 2 for the participating school, 11 for the other schools, and 1 for the league office.
That may have changed, or may not have happened that way at all.
consigilere luper should have godfather lowder put out a hit on $aban and REC members. poison oatmeal pies. cut brake lines. undercooked ruth's chris steaks...

Another excellent blog Jay. It always impresses me how you don't usually have any typos. That can't be said of a lot of other sites. You are precise.
I am not sure what to think of Luper, but so far so good.
As for Auburn's recruiting class being stronge, I wouldn't exactly say that. They got some high profile players that were not expected. I think they failed to fill specific needs in terms of linemen and linebackers. They really should get a pass on that considering the amount of time they had to get it done.
do we know anything about what was supposed to be an announcement that would make Auburn fans happy? I hope it wasn't the one about JJ being on the exec committee.
I think you'll be surprised/impressed by the players Auburn brings to summer camps in a few weeks.
I wont be impressed until we sign some of these guys, and specifically fill some of our needs. We have some high profile runningbacks and receivers that are looking at us, but I have only begun to see the high profile lineman. I want to see a significant influx of big uglies.
Luper sounds like a coach you could count on to calm the waters during a 3-game losing streak.
Let's hope he's the kind of coach that calms the waters so we don't have a three-game losing streak.
I hope he's the kind of coach that coaches football realz good
I like your plan better, Jet.
Harrison ...
Start warming up, Puppet Hour is near, and I haven't seen any Michael tracks lately.
We need you.
If he was reserve to Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders, he may know a thing or three.
Do either of those two have any eligibility left?
Jay,
One of your best posts ever for my money. Absolutely love this..."Luper often holds deep conversations that span well beyond football. That's not exactly universal among people in his profession".
Don't know how you could make the point any clearer.
Also, as a psych guy, I appreciated your Skinner/Rogers analogy.
Props for a post with "substance"!
WoW Jay GT - you're spoiling me. Quantity AND Quality today. WARRR EAGLE and a big thank you!!!
Congrats WEG! And way to go DL on the other one.
This week has been much busier than usual; I suppose that is a real good thing, though I miss keeping a constant eye on HABOTN.
i'll try jet-- short staffed at work today for the stretch run. Although I am ready to talk nonsense anytime. Plus i got big beer and golf plans this weekend starting tonight
27 hours 10 minutes til hockey!!!
Where you playin', H?
SEC passes signing class limit of 28.
28? that's pretty significant
Giggity, Giggity, Goo!
What's Nutt gonna do?
Nutt went nuts this year with 38 I believe.
note to self: proof read posts for lame puns prior to publication
Sorry to drag up the earlier post, but I wasn't around to comment. This will be my only comment on the Lowder retirement.
I hope this means that AU can finally rid itself of that cancer. I know of numerous dastardly, clandestine acts perpetrated by the man. After Jetgate, he started acting more like a national CEO instead of a "Jerry Jones" and got much better at hiding his interferences.
Folks in certain circles that dared to speak ill of him paid dearly. AU needs to bigger than one man and we really don't need his money. If he will truly go away, then groups of folks (that now stay away) will fill the economic void.
That is all.
Those aren't gang signs Luper is throwing are they or is that a hook'em horns thing?
Hoopie, quit sugar coating it. How do you really feel?
Hmmm, I heard the signing limit might get pushed to 30, but 28 sounds reasonable. I know Nutt is all for 38, but where are the extra 13 signies going to end up?
Steve....not as strongly as years ago.
Luper's hand motions aren't the style used in the military. Maybe that's a technique he picked up during his communication masters studies.
Limiting signings to 28 will probably serve to reduce commitments to marginal qualifiers. This means that more kids will have to go to Juco or Prep without at least having had a commitment. For socio-economically disadvantaged kids, this reduces motivation.
There probably should be some limit. 28 sounds too low. 38 is way too high. Maybe 30 IS right.
Congrats to the HS graduating Hotties and offspring of Hotties.
THT
The other one was kinda cheap.... check the timestamp...
Just could not stand to see a zero on one of Master Jays posts..
oh man. OK. He is "counting". He is doing that index finger tap on the little finger. No "gang Signs" or whatever.
Those commitments become meaningless anyway. They're supposed to be competitors. They should look at it as something to prove.
AU undercover says the story of what is going down in recruiting tonight will be available at 8PM CST(?). bring your info at 7:59 jgt! i hope luper has masterminded something good with all the hype out there. if it is high profile commits, then a reserved "yay!" until february 2010.
i also agree that 30 is better than 28. it is quite conceivable that there would be non-qualifiers and attrition of at least 5 total players on every team in the sec each year. 3 narrows the margin for error considerably.
NoVa.....Go read "The Blind Side"(Michael Oher story). There are kids that don't even know HOW to learn. Their parents didn't give them a chance. These kids can give up easily without reinforcement and hope.
I would rather break the poverty cycle using CFB revenues than taxes.
The announcement can't be anything like we are proud to announce Seastrunk has committed unless we want to pull a Kiffin.
Ah, they are going to name Bobby Lowder the head of recruiting:)
Great book and story, Hoopie.
You forgot to address the most important topic concerning Luper... what's up with the glasses? :)
WDE!
Does anyone know what has happened with michael? I miss the sparkle in Jan Terri's eyes.
Michael Jan Terri made some great bbq.You ever see Fried Green Tomatos?
Hey Norm...
A Luper, you know, a caddy, a Luper, a jock.
What's up PF, where you been?
has anyone seen this list of recruits that are suppose to be in town this weekend, ie now? If this is true, this is just bannanas!!
Here is a list of "known" recruits in town this weekend:
Ken Adams, Ryan Ayers, Victor Beasley, Shon Coleman, Tyrone Cornileus, J.C. Copeland, Jessel Curry, Khairi Fortt, Antonio Goodwin, Jake Holland, Shaun Kitchens, Marcus Lattimore, Eric Mack, Johnathan Mincy, LaDarius Owens, Trovon Reed, Jeremy Richardson, Lache Seastrunk, James Stone, Nigel Terrell, Mike Thornton and Jawara White.
BigCat,
Jawara RaRa White from Troy was a stud as a frosh. at Charles Henderson. How has he progressed?
Interesting that there is some big announcement at 8:00 CDT and that a lot of big name recruits will be in town. My guess is that the coaches have come up with something to really impress the recruits.
Hmmmm, this is some coincidence. This is big cat weekend on the plains.
rats, just missed Lemieux
but just in time for Jagr
enjoyed reading the lowder debate on the previous post. he ain't gone, to be sure.
hey ehyou. the short answer is busy. the long answer is that I am on a secret mission.
I'm nice and clean and hopefully tick free after a nice long shower following 2 hours of yard work with Mrs THT cracking the whip. I don't like yard work in the fall & winter, but at least it is somewhat tolerable then. I hate it in the spring & summer just as much as I hate UA-T. Anyone who finds even a smidgen of pleasure in yard work is either utterly insane or not nearly as lazy as I am. I can't stand coming inside and finding out I have lots of new friends of the 8-legged variety. You think I don't like to socialize with people? Just watch me around ticks. I can't begin to tell you how much I hate ticks. I once found 13 on my person after an afternoon outdoors. Having said that, I'll take 13 tick bites any day for a 40 point win in the IB.
one minute until the big news. Is Jay G live blogging this?
Big Cat Weekend is the big news, if they can get half these 'cats' to sign, heck, we're in business.
I think the announcement must be big cat weekend, but I could be wrong.
is Jay G live blogging Big Cat weekend?
so, are these official visits? Or did all of these big cats come to Auburn on their own dime? I didn't know you could have "recruiting" weekends this time of year. What is/isn't allowed this particular weekend vs. the usual Fall/January recruiting weekend?
Thanks to any/all who can clarify.
oh, and WARRRR BIG CAT EAGLE!!!!!!!!!
Demarco McNeill has been named DL coach at Birmingham Southern (that's defensive line coach, not Dear Leader coach).
Congrats to Demarco! Best wishes to a GREAT Auburn Tiger!!!
oops, that information was courtesy of Evan Woodberry.
me likey BIG CAT. another winner of a brainstorm for the chiz, luper and staff on the recruiting front.
when was the last time tubs had this many big boys in auburn,al at this point in the year? about never o'clock...
let's see how $aban and urban cryer figure out how to spin a watermelon contest into an ncaa violation. my guess is copius amounts of watermelon are not considered extra benefits.
I'm thinkin' Dr Chiz has cured me of my cat allergy.
Wow.
Just ... Wow.
Jay G. is going to Los Angeles this weekend. That means ... no Big Cat weekend for this big cat.
Have a great trip Jay GT. I'm already suffering an overdose from substance abuse. Too many great blogs filled with fantastic information from you today. THANKS!!!!!!!
THT ...
I need a ruling. I have some Mayfield Vanilla, and some Blue Bell Dutch Chocolate.
Is it appropriate to mix?
Have a good time in the city of Angels. Cover you butt in West Hollywood and watch your back in EastLos.
Any chance you can get the Marilyn Monroe lookalikes at the chinese theatre to pose for a pic in a HABOTN shirt?
Jetzilla. Mixing the two might end the world, but it would definitely be worth it.
Jet- yes, mixing is allowed, though I'm not a big fan of mixing. Particularly in your case, the mixing would be an insult to Blue Bell.
I can report that the Blue Bell is getting over the insult, and I feel pretty good about it.
ok, we made it to Beasley. Let's all go to the other thread.
The answer is Tubs had been time recruits in like this every year, although he didn't call it big cat weekend and preferred the camps in the summer. I thought that was common knowledge.
