Coaching snapshot: Gene Chizik
Hey everyone. So I made reference yesterday to a little feature we'll run here at the HABOTN for the next few weeks. Here it is.
We'll start off with The Head Coach. That seems reasonable. I'll be altering the categories based on the coach. Guys without any ties with Auburn don't need their Auburn ties discussed. Right?
If you have other categories that deserve discussion, mention them in the comments section. As you know, I abide the HOTTIES.
GENE CHIZIK
Age: 47 (born 12/28/61)
College: B.A. from Florida, 1985; M.A. from Clemson, 1991.
Playing career: Spent one season playing LB at Florida.
Coaching career:
Auburn, head coach (2008-present)
Iowa State, head coach (2007-2008)
Texas, defensive coordinator (2005-2006)
Auburn, defensive coordinator (2002-2004)
Central Florida, defensive coordinator (1998-2001)
Stephen F. Austin, defensive coordinator (1996-1997)
Stephen F. Austin, linebackers (1992-95)
Middle Tennessee State, defensive ends (1990-1991)
Clemson, graduate assistant (1989-1990)
Seminole High, defensive coordinator (1986-1988)
Mentor:
Mack Brown, head coach at Texas
Previous Auburn experience:
Chizik spent three seasons as Tommy Tuberville's defensive coordinator beginning in 2002. I considered him an upset winner for that job back then, which I figured would go to Chuck Pagano. He was one of Tuberville's buddies from U. Miami and, at the time, a defensive assistant with the Cleveland Browns. Chizik was a pretty private guy during his days as an Auburn assistant. He was thrifty with his words. I never got the sense he enjoyed speaking with reporters. Though I wouldn't describe him as unpleasant, Chizik was here to do a job and his focus on that task never seemed to waver.
Coaching philosophy:
I'd still put him in the "C.E.O." category, but he's more moderate than Tuberville. While Tuberville gave his assistants little (if any) significant technical oversight, Chizik provides plenty of real-time input during practices and staff meetings. With that said, his most meaningful assistant jobs (Auburn, Texas) were associated with head coaches willing to concede varying levels of control. Chizik isn't a micromanager. He is an involved manager.
Chizik employed 4-3 schemes at Auburn and Texas. I consider secondary coverages to be his specialty. Auburn's defensive backs were at their zenith during Chizik's final two seasons. They defended passes well, busts were sporadic and communication problems were rare. The Tigers didn't blitz very often. It's my belief that Chizik's abilities were most evident once David Gibbs made his one-year sortie in 2005 and Will Muschamp after that; the team's defensive backs clearly regressed in a number of areas.
One could argue that not having Carlos Rogers around made a difference. Still, I gained a new appreciation for the technical side of Chizik's defense during Auburn's 2005 season.
Personality profile:
He's a reserved guy who analyzes the long-term ramifications of what he says. You won't get into a war or words with Chizik. He doesn't gossip. Even when CB Montae Pitts was acting a fool in 2004, earning a one-game suspension at one point, Chizik was remarkably reserved with his criticism.
He's a vanilla kind of guy. He's aware of that image, though. I don't think it's a coincidence that outspoken guys like Trooper Taylor, Tracy Rocker, Curtis Luper and Jeff Grimes became members of the Tigers' staff. They offset Chizik's button-down demeanor.
He reminds me of a military officer in many ways: Direct with his words, task oriented, unlikely to kill time with idle pursuits.

Monica wins! Monica wins! MONNNNNNNICA wins!
OMNICA, OMNICA, OMNICA!!!
Nice substance too.
Substantially substantive in its substance, I'd say.
We didn't get fave food? movie? turn -ons and turn-offs?
Favorite food: Saban Heads smeared with Little Debbie Oatmeal Cakes
Turnons: 4 touchdown victories
Turnoffs: Dumb@$$ offensive coordinators
Hey, great insight Jay. I'm totally looking forward to Coach Chizik at AU. I was totally against the hire, but he's gradually won me over.
Also, Will Muschamp didn't come to AU till 2006...Gibbs was the DC in 2005.
yuck. the Gibbs era is easily forgotten
Gibbs! You are so correct. Gotta change that ...
I'm sure Gibby will be devastated.
Yeah, not a memorable time...under Gibbs that is. But I agree, for all the hype about Muschamp, our best defenses were under Chiz the Wiz.
Granted, Gibbs looked "The Cruiser" from "Stripes," but the two regular-seasons losses in his season at Auburn were hardly his fault.
The bowl loss ... well, I've considered that an overblown event -- unmotivated team plays highly motivated team. It happens.
Good stuff, Jay G. Just what I was hoping for. Thank you, sir.
more things i think bammers deserve: pine sap, ice milk, 1 ply toilet paper, 4 cylinder trucks, mosquito bites, kenny stabler, hamburger king unexpectedly closing to go fishing, unlevel double-wides, mcdonald's forgetting their french fries, mudslides, second-hand somke, dead fish, forest fires, rectal itch, dial-up access, no cell phone coverage, skid marks, DUIs, laryngitis, bad hair/mullet days, flat pepsi, bleaching their bammer "got 12?" shirt so it turns pink, dirt roads, bear maulings, the black jelly bean, fire ants, dull razor blades, low brake fluid, dry counties, <6% alcohol content beers, termites, rust, unnecessary colonoscopy with no anesthesia, biting their tongue while chewing, swallowing their dip, bad bbq sauce, parking tickets, sunburn, grass stains, THE HABOTN making fun of their cousin humping ways, Destiny from Pcola, cavities, yugos, spinal taps, credit card declined, dead batteries, adulterous spouses, tetanus shots, sour milk, the "a" key breaking on their keyboard, missing the bus, nba playoff ot preempting their a-day game, identity theft (who would want it?), rotten eggs, biting flies, imitation crab meat, teddy ruxpin, sinkholes, burnt out light bulbs, chemical castration, cats that shed, clogged drains, frostbite, burned popcorn, roadkill, tennessee football, skunks, envelopes with nasty tasting glue, broken eyeglasses, smushed oatmeal pies, bill curry, moldy cheese, tree stumps, worms, *sshole players, a boot to the head, going 0-12, and most of all our un-dying, un-ending and everlasting H-A-T-E!!!!
who do you have on the hook for tommorrows bait?
very nice Chip Chip...
Chip- I read that looking for one thing that I actually might enjoy outof that list, and I came away with nothing. Well Done!!
Where is Gibbs nowadays.?
Nice, Chip. Real nice.
oooo I'm going to invite Greg to go fishing with me! Good plan. Thanks Dear Leader.
i've been hating bammer more than usual today. i did not know this was possible. maybe its out of my system now. i think it's like most things that are fun--unhealthy.
Gibby was with the K.C. Chiefs last I heard.
Which coach do you want next?
may hundreds of bears, driving thousands of puppets, descend upon tuscaloosa. good work on the chiz, jgt.
Troo-Per! Tay-Lor!
Gus Malzhan or Ted Roof. Shouldn't coordinators go next?
Hi Jay, do you think you may be underestimating Tuberville's influence on the offense. It is one of the criticisms I think applicable to him. For instance, the longer Borges was around, the more conservative he got. I assumed it was because of Tuberville stressing his conservative style and defense wins games philosophy.
In terms of Chizik, I do hope he is a hands off guy with the offense. My belief is you get a solid OC and let him do his thing. Put the success or failure of the offense in the OC's hands. Make him accountable and reward success.
It is ironic how Chizik has grown on people. I wasn't particularly a fan of the hire and took a wait and see attitude. So far I consider him a success. I don't necessarily consider wins and losses the measure of a successful head coach. It is being the CEO that is important and not doing stupid things. As a counter example, see Kiffin. I expect a good head coach to make the necessary hard decisions to eventually produce a winning team, but the biggest thing is ensuring the team is well prepared and receives the coaching that these athletes deserve.
Good stuff Jay. I'm ready for some football! We definitely had our best defense under his tutelage.
By the way, I didn't think Boom was a good choice as a head coach. I prefer coaches like Jordan, Dye, Tuberville, and Chizik; who are more picky with their words. Boom seems like a candidate to be a Kiffin.
If it makes you feel better steve, chiz hasn't grown on me at all. My full opinion probably won't be in stores until December
Hi Jay, do you think you may be underestimating Tuberville's influence on the offense.
No.
My feelings on Chizik are pretty much the same as they were when he was hired. He is an outstanding DC and secondary coach, and he took a lousy HC position at Iowa St. I will be the first to say I was ready for a new HC at AU, and I think he and his staff have brought some much needed enthusiasm to the program. I also think the outcry from the public as a whole(not the AU fans) over his hire probably helped get him support from Auburn fans who were initially upset over his getting the job. I look forward to seeing how he performs as the HC this fall.
I do think Chizik has been a very good choice so far. We will have to see how he does when he has to make hard choices. It is much easier to hire someone than it is to fire them. It takes a real man to suspend one of the better players on the team for violating team rules. Things like this are what I am waiting to see.
One of the things I always admired about Tuberville is that I was consistent with discipline. My guess is that Chizik will be also. The lack of discipline of his team is one of the reasons that Fulmer is no longer at Tennessee. I hope we never see Auburn get that kind of reputation.
I will take your word for it Jay. But I have another question. Why do you think Auburn's offense always seemed to turn conservative under Tuberville no matter which coordinator was present.
Also, do you not think that Tuberville was pushing for Kodi to be the starter last season?
On an aside, I do respect how quickly people recognized the issues with Franklin. It didn't take a lot of time for people to question him. When discussing the offense I would often see people type wtf, which I assume means Why Tony Franklin?
Steve-This will be my only discussion about that subject as I have moved on from the past.
Franklin was a good hire. Tubs problem was that he either didn't explain to the assistants that this was who was going to run the offense and if you are not on board don't let the door hit you on the way OR he thought Franklin would change his ways to a more conservative 'spread' offense.
Franklin is not a bad coach. He was put in a bad situation. Tubs is to blame as the CEO and he paid for it.
That is all.
WTC - Rahrin! If my recollection of Blazing Saddles is correct (and I think it is) that means I agree.
It should be noted that Coach Chizik is not above moving on from coordinators. I remember he made changes at ISU during his short stint there.
Also, let's not feel too bad for CTF. He's getting paid $280K for not coaching here and probably making decent jack at MTSU. (I have no idea what they are paying him; I'd guess $90-$95 maybe. Jay G. may know this.)
Also, Chizik and Co have done a great job of getting Auburn mentioned again by top players in recruiting. Now, can Chizik(and staff) close the deal and get them to commit to Auburn? I think they can, but as we know, in recruiting, if you don't finish first for a player, you may as well be 4th choice. Did Coach Chizik do much recruiting when he was at Auburn as DC?
JGT - thanks for that Chiz synopsis. I'm looking forward the the rest of them.
All you hotties have a GREAT weekend.
Norm-I registered for the NYC marathon today. Have to see if I am chosen in the lottery. If so I will start training right away. If not, i will join the ice cream group on HABOTN.
What up peeps? Good read, Jay, I am patiently waiting for tomorrow's edition.
Monica!!! You are my hero today!
Thanks for the read Jay, good insight.
All Hotties have a great weekend and don't forget to thank a veteran!
amen war eagle girl.. too many foret what it is all about.
forget...
sorry
I think Memorial Day is for buying more memory for your computers and cameras etc.
Probably I've received one too many memorial day ads.
Conservative offense: I think Tuberville had some influence on that, but it wasn't exactly deep. He (probably) said: "Just don't **** this up with dumb calls."
I'm with wtc. Tony Franklin is not a bad coach. He's not a bad guy. I have no doubt that he'll be successful elsewhere. He was the wrong guy for this particular situation.
WTC - good luck to you on the lottery. I have an appointment to run 18 in the morning. My running buddy and I will probably do one in November in Raleigh. I'd love to join the ice cream group. Before I started running regularly, my freezer was rarely without Blue Bell. I miss it.
Sensi- Chizik only made coordinator changes at ISU because he was forced to. I'm fairly sure he didn't want to do that yet.
10 yr anniversary today. Needless to say, I will not be hanging out with you guys tonight.
War Eagle.
A pox on Bama.
And I agree with what Jay G said about what WTC said about Tony Franklin.
That's authentic frontier jibberish.
Congrats, ehyou.
i seem to remember gran was the instigator is hooking tubs up with franklin. i guess gran did not consult the rest of the inside circle before dropping that bomb on them. i still think that was tub's fault for not performing due diligence on the chemistry HIS staff would have with franklin. he simply trusted one of "his guys" and got burned again. he also trusted "his guys" and ended up with nallsminger I in 2003. franklin should have been able to bring at least two or three of HIS folks with him (i.e. knox, ensminger gone).
I don't think Tony Franklin was a bad coach either. It was just like you took a wonderful cat and through him into a pin with a bunch of wonderful dogs. It didn't work out too well.
my feeling at the end of 2008 was that either tubs cleans house except maybe for gran, rhodes and darth willis or we start over with a new coach. i really didn't care which happened at that point as they would ultimately achieve the same end result. new blood in the system.
if tubs ever had a staff like the current one, i think he could have done some major damage in the sec for a long time. tub's personality just gave everyone the warm and fuzzies. chizik not so much...
Norm-Let me know which one you are doing in November? If I do no tmake the lottery I may be looking for one and can join you.
and from the discussion earlier today about sisscum crying after that ib fumble, one of my vhs tapes i'm converting to dvd is the 89 UF game. emmitt smith is quite shaken up after wasden caught the td to win it 10-7. for some reason UF decided to cover wasden with a defensive lineman on that winning play. auburn made the nfl's all time leading rusher cry. go figure. i did see an interview with smith late in his career and when asked if he had any regrets about his career he responded, "i didn't go to auburn." someone needs to dig up that quote for urban the whiny.
Hey ehyou my anniversary is Sunday. 12 years.
WTC - the one we're discussing is City of Oaks on 11/1 in Raleigh. I expect we'll talk about it tomorrow and perhaps confirm it.
Norm-Just read the reviews on this site:
http://www.marathonguide.com/races/racedetails.cfm?MIDD=2740091101
That race will be very hilly. Every comment is about the hills. Probably not for me. I liek flat terrain like Chicago.
Good luck though.
As for the coach thing-Chizik was nto my choice, in fact he wasn't even on the radar for me and I thought JJ had blown a gasket when he made the hire. The passage of time and the hiring of an aggressive staff has softened my opinion of him. I am one to say that no matter how bad ISU was, his record was terrible and got worse the 2nd year.
Everyone forgets that stuff if he wins. If not, the 'I told you so' crowd will be all over AU very quickly. But I suspect he will win more than the media think this year which will draw in more talent in 2010.
Anyone watch The Life & Times of Tim?
Update on Mrs. Digger:
Improvement in blood chemistry and lungs. Still on Vent and now on Trach and feeding tube. If they can't remove Vent by Tuesday they will have to move her to Anniston long term breathing rehab.
*crickets*
