Video report: Inside the new basketball arena

Enjoy.

NOTE: I removed auto-play at 10 p.m.

You now may watch the video by clicking this link. Thanks!

ALSO: I (again) will be on WMSP's afternoon show tomorrow. Seriously. If you're interested, you know where to find it.

  1. What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

    ReplyDelete
  2. In it's current condition, the arena is already nicer than BEMC.

I'm glad it's not massive. Looks like something we can fill up once in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Byars said the new arena easily could fit inside Beard-Eaves ... without coming close to touching the top of BEMC.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Love it. Can't wait to attend some games there. Should be nice and LOUD.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Anonymous3:37 PM

    What will become of BEMC?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I know we don't fill up Beard EAves unless we are really good, but am I alone in thinking this arena may be a little too small?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I believe BEMC will be demo'd for parking.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Byars said there has been a change in the thinking about BEMC. It was assumed (from the beginning) that demolition was at hand.

Now people are looking at that facility as a useful "transitional" space. Other departments that get displaced during various construction projects can be relocated there temporarily.

In short, I don't think BEMC is coming down anytime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think BEMC is getting demolished in the next 5 years after the new arena is done and all of the other athletic offices are moved out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I think you're wrong, AU1292.

Also, I again avoided a layoff today. The Advertiser cut another 12 employees today -- our fourth wave of layoffs.

Not sure how long I'll make it here, gang, but I'm here today.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It sounds as though it may have a functional purpose, it's just rather unsightly on an otherwise beautiful campus.

    ReplyDelete
  12. JGT...
I think anyone currently employed is just "hanging in there".

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is the HABOTN property of JGT or the Advertiser?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Michael- it will have 900 fewer seats, but the selling point for smaller/more intimate/cozier, etc. is that every seat is a good seat and it's louder. At least that's what I read some place along the way.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The HABOTN is property of JGT.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's correct, MonD.

It looks to me like every seat is a good seat.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 82 Million for 9,600 seats? If my calculations are right, that is over $8500 per butt.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ehyou, cool Allman Bros connection on your project. I didn't know that about "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". I clicked on another link in that story that said "Little Martha" was also written as a result of hanging out in that cemetery.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That is an awesome looking facility.

I don't know about $82 Mil though. Does anyone have any comparative figures?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I stand corrected. They need to make the parking lot of BEMC and BEMC a green area where people can tailgate and what-not.

    ReplyDelete
  21. yep, BEMC will come down in the not to distant future. Good riddance. I can't wait to see the new arena.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nice work, Jay.

I know Byars. He's good folk.

    ReplyDelete
  23. JGT- The word is that Tim Hawthorne is injured again. Any truth to this?

    ReplyDelete
  24. JJ mentioned the fate of BEMC in his interview a few days back in ledger-inquirer or something.

It involved demolition at some point in not-so-distant future, because the operating costs. I don't recall his exact words, and he is very verbose.. so I'm not going to read that interview again.

    ReplyDelete
  25. South Carolina built a new arena about 5 years ago and it was in the $60-70 million dollar range. However, it holds twice as many spectators as the new Auburn arena

    ReplyDelete
  26. I hope that kid is the last person we see sleeping in the new arena.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd say the Hawthorne news is probably true. That's all I can say. My attempts to get an on-the-record confirmation have not been fruitful to this point.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Demolishing BEMC is not JJ's decision.

    ReplyDelete
  29. SteveFC: The facility also includes legitimate practice facilities for both hoops programs, a weight room and the athletic department's Hall of Fame.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Okay, so that will cut down the buck per butt ration a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Undercover is reporting Hawthorne out for 6-8 weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ChocoScott...
If you're interested, here's a very moving article on Duane's
    memorial service.

    ReplyDelete
  33. That HOF section looks like it's going to have a killer view of the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The Arena:

    Hot. HABOTNly hot.

    Awesomely awesome.

    Can't wait.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congrats on avoiding the layoff, Jay G. Keep the dream alive, brotha.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Alleged Tubs defender Paul Spina to leave AU Board of Trustees due to expiration of term.

Applications are being accepted for the District 6 slot. Must be a resident of Bibb, Chilton, Greene, Hale, Perry, Shelby, Sumter or Tuscaloosa counties.

    Preference given to HOTTIES.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd like to see a HOTTIE get on the BOT.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks for the link, ehyou.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jay G ...

    I'd volunteer for that gig.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Trust me, I know what's best for Auburn.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Jay G or Hotties have you seen the Much Celebrated Auburn Billboard in Mobile? Email me if you would like a copy of the pic.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Mobile! Thanks so much for the pic!

    ReplyDelete
  43. How do you become a member of the BOT?

    ReplyDelete
  44. All HOTTIES should be an Automatic MEMBERS!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Monica ...

You apply to the Trustee Nomination Committee -- the gov, 2 trustees, 2 alumni reps. They forward a nomination to the Senate for confirmation.

It used to be that you stayed on the BOT until your successor was confirmed. This was when the governor was the sole selector of nominees.

Under the new law, you can serve for one year past the expiration date, and then your seat is vacated until someone is confirmed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks Mon! I don't understand the big deal with the Billboard.....

Bammers are just jealous they didn't think of it first!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I nominate Jet as the Hottie representative to apply for BOT membership.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I Second that Nomination and move that we close the nominations for BOT Hottie Nominee!!! can i get a second?

    ReplyDelete
  49. If Hawthorne hurt his foot, I'll say it becomes very difficult for him to work his way back into the rotation. The new players are going to be itching at the chance to take his spot.

Caudle threw an awful interceptions(or interceptions) in most every open practice/scrimmage that I have attended. I've not been able to see him like Jay or the reporters have, maybe I caught him on a bad day(days). Frankin seemed to ruin any confidence Kodi or Neil may have had. I just wonder about a QB who hadn't seen any real game action in years. I would love to see him get a chance, he stood in there when many people were saying he was leaving the football team.

    ReplyDelete
  50. im Outtie % to the House Hotties. I will check back when i get to the Hizzay

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jet doesn't live in the designated counties.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Jet would move for that gig.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous5:42 PM

Don't you have to be a wealthy friend of the governor to get on the BOT?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous5:42 PM

Jet's got to change that avatar....at least pretend not to be a lackey.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What are the designated counties?

Who says Jet isn't a wealthy friend of the Guvnah?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Anonymous5:44 PM

Bold prediction on Caudle there JG.

I don't care which one makes it as long as they come at it with passion and a good work ethic.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anonymous5:52 PM

Not to start the whole QB argument again, but notice the photos that JGT has randomly attached to the Kodi and Caudle Bios. Kodi is throwing of his back foot, off balance with his hips and shoulders open. Caudle, admittedly is not on a roll out, but is not doing any of those things that Kodi was doing wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Caudle may need to go on the instant experience plan. We need to bring back the Ethiopian offensive line for one game. There you have it. One full game of lookout blocks and he will be well seasoned.

    ReplyDelete
  59. "Phantom", I will erase your posts every single time I see one here. This will not change.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anonymous7:11 PM

I've not seen any of Phantom's posts. Thanks to JGT's quick banhammer...I may never..and am probably better off for such.

    ReplyDelete
  61. JayGT - thanks for the great video. Dare I say I can't wait for Auburn basketball in 2010? Let's start the countdown!

    ok, maybe just yet.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have to say, even though I rarely have a comment, the HABOTN is like my favorite warm blanket without which I would not feel quite right. Jay...may you always have something to say on this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  63. hey, Ralph Jordan Jr. lives within 20 miles of me. do i get some kind of 'designated county' waiver for BOT application? i mean, come on???!!!

it has been a while on a video JG. it was worth the wait. very nice.

    ReplyDelete
  64. long live the banhammer! erase phantom today!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hi guys, gals. Been lurking for a while. Everyone doing well?

    Note on recruiting, understand that
Corey Grant, RB from Opelika, he and father are concerned about the other RB's AU seems to be in on. We may not get him.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hi Sponge & Snow- it's really great to hear from y'all.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Sponge - I think he would have very good reason for such concern, IF things go according to plan. Is it safe to assume he's not interested in a job at H-back or receiver?

    ReplyDelete
  68. When JGT takes you out, there is no "comment deleted" left behind.

    And like that....he's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Howdy Tar. Glad to be back. Has everyone been as busy this summer as I have?

Jay, hope we get to keep you. Your an ass et, er asset to AU. LOL Love your work. Any more news on new recruits qualifying? We need more than 19.

    ReplyDelete
  70. If I can't be on the BOT, I might as well run for Gov!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Does anyone know what the designated counties are?

    Hey Spongeworthy! How ya doing?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Tar, if we get Seastrunk and Dyer both, I think we will be fine. I would hate to lose a homegrown product though. Based on all those recruits that have left or never made it over the last two years, 25 that qualify would be nice.

Notice all the guys at UA that have either come up w/ medical issues or just quit lately. Nothing like making room for the new recruits. I even saw where Nicky said some that haven't recovered sufficiently from their "injuries" may take a grayshirt year. Any bets on who pays for that???? Free textbooks help a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Mon. doing great. looking forward to the season. I'm hopeful, but watching the attrition lately has me quite worried.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Note to self: Never piss off Jay G. Tate.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Jet - Don't tease.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Jet, you think you could take ol Yeller Feller?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sponge,

I'd 2 x 4 his pressure treated butt all the way back to Abbeville.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Monica...

check my 4:28 post for your answer.

    ReplyDelete
  79. On a side note. Anyone see where the democrates are considering taxing the rich to pay for healthcare? Read on, and find out they consider the rich as singles earning 200K adjusted and couples earning 250K adjusted. All from our congressmen that earn way more than that, but don't have to pay taxes. WOW WOW

    ReplyDelete
  80. Thank you, Jet. Apparently they were right. You will go blind.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Jet, better pick up a 6x6. don't think a 2x4 will get the job done.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Will someone please explain to me the difference between "taxing the rich" to pay for things and stealing? The line is pretty fuzzy to me.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Steve. I just saw an interesting piece of info. During the Carter administration, the Department of Energy was created. For what purpose? One purpose was to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. I forget the details, but currenly, they have a budget of some 18 billion (if I remember correctly) and some huge number of government employees/contract employees. And you know the results of our energy consumption, dependency. Now we want to tax the rich (ha ha) and let our government run healthcare. Gotta be a better answer.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yea, sometimes I wonder how politicians breath with their heads stuck so far up their ....

    ReplyDelete
  85. Sponge, I have a hard time seeing Grant being a full-time RB for whichever school he chooses. He seems more like McCalebb than an every-down back. I would love to seem him come to Auburn, but Opelika is full of Bama fans, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up there. He would be a great return man, that guy can flat-out fly and he can make people miss, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yeah, depressed. At this point, we need all the skill we can get. Maybe we need to create the Orange Tiger Club, to compete with the REC.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Night all. I've got six kids at the house. getting kinda busy.

    ReplyDelete
  88. New Orleans newspaper reports that the Corndogs are adding "LSU" to the front of their football uniforms this year.

    ReplyDelete
  89. sup Hotties..I'll third Jets nomination for a BOT position..I also love the sound of the banhammer getting laid down as I scroll through the comments for today..anyway just chillin on a Thursday night..here's one for the weekend folks...

    ReplyDelete
  90. hey Wartiger/PartyDawg

    ReplyDelete
  91. I have not been back to a basketball game since I got out (10+ years). I will be doing so after the new arena opens.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ehyou,

Will you be sitting with Kobiyashi, or will you be singing the national anthem with the barbershop quartet?

    ReplyDelete
  93. I haven't been since 84 or 85! I'll be going after we move fer sher.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Jet, you won't walk out on a solid floor, yet you'll put your life in peril on a death-dealing white water river? Now that is something I'm waayyyyy to chicken to do.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Yeah, after picking Guatamalan coffee beans, my quartet from Skokie, IL will sing the national anthem. After that, my guess is you'll never hear from us again.

    ReplyDelete
  96. THIS COMMENT IS ONLY FOR STEVEFC re: 8:03:

Why Walter Williams couldn't have been the first African-American president instead of the thief we have is beyond me, other than the fact he didn't run. I did vote for Alan Keyes in 2 or 3 elections back in the Clinton era. Anyhoo, Walter Williams is about a billion times smarter than me and I love the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonymous8:56 PM

THT-I just got my pictures from the Upper Pigeon river last week. Bug grins on all of faces. White water rafting is a blast.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Anonymous8:57 PM

    Bug=big

    ReplyDelete
  99. NoVa ...

The Upper Pigeon is the river in my avatar. We went last week.

    ReplyDelete
  100. THT, I am not particularly against Obama, because I think Bush made similar mistakes with the economy and McCain wasn't that different from Obama. I consider this time a learning period for America.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Anonymous9:05 PM

The Upper Pigeon is a great river. Fast paced, not too wild but lots of fun. Not much slack water either.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Can't you folks email each other if you want to talk politics? Or find a political forum? Why, exactly, are you so desperate to talk politics here? I'm just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Mr. Williams seems like a smart man.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Personally, I prefer to not get into a political discussion. I find it depressing to see how people are taken advantage of by the political process.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Steve is there some evil woman standing there with a gun to your head forcing you to participate in these political discussions?

    ReplyDelete
  106. How did you know?

    ReplyDelete
  107. To please Monica ... a subject change.

Have I told you how much I hate UAT?

    ReplyDelete
  108. As I say, I consider this a learning experience for America. I don't want to discuss who is right or wrong. It is easier just to let the results speak for themselves.

And I honestly do hope Obama is successful.

    ReplyDelete
  109. As much as I hate big-gubmint' liberals.

    Just kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Email me your address, Steve! I'm calling the cops for you.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Anonymous9:14 PM

    Here's a question:

Would any of the 7 QBs on the squad start at any other SEC school?

    ReplyDelete
  112. This is why I prefer to discuss football. I consider it much more interesting and I love seeing these kids develop into men.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Macho, definitely. Quite a few of them are 4 stars, three of them if I am not mistaken. Do you not follow football closely?

    ReplyDelete
  114. THT has gone silent suddenly!

    ReplyDelete
  115. If I recall correctly, Todd was a 3 star, but he was in an intense battle with Harrell at Texas Tech for the starting job, so the answer is obviously yes.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Maybe he fears the MonHammer?

    ReplyDelete
  117. I've been down the upper & lower Ocoee. Those are pretty wild rides.

Just as much fun was tubing the Little River from Wears Valley Rd back down to Townsend. A cooler-dedicated innertube was involved.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Mon - I've been quietly reading Walter Williams's columns.

    ReplyDelete
  119. If SEC means Southeastern Connecticut, like Yale or the Coast Guard Academy, absolutely.

If SEC means Southeastern Conference, uh, no.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I have no doubt that several of our QBs could start at other SEC schools. Heck, UT seems to be begging for QBs these days.

    ReplyDelete
  121. There are 2 guys in my office from the bayou, one from N'awlins, the other I don't recall, maybe Shreveport, and neither one of them cares diddly squat about college football. I just think that's wrong. I'm sure some state law is being violated there.

I don't mean to imply they are a "couple." They are each happily married family men who both happen to be from the land of Cajuns. And neither cares one iota about college football. I'm telling you, it's wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  122. THT - If only you had started that way.

The New River in West Virginia - gotta check it out for the class IV and V rapids.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I have wondered if football was followed as closely in Louisiana as it is in Alabama. Not many states have the intensity for it that Alabama does.

    ReplyDelete
  124. There's a pretty famous bridge that spans the New River Gorge.

    ReplyDelete
  125. White water rafting violates one of my primary rules, which is namely, don't die doing something stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Ocoee definitely on the agenda for me and ElTurbo.

    ReplyDelete
  127. The only white water I get close to is in a jacuzzi.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Jet- don't forget Connecticut College, I'm sure one of the 7 could play a backup role there.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Bridge Day is AWESOME! It's in October and a bazillion people show up. The BASE jumpers are ever so cool to watch. I met that really hawt guy that used to do sports on MTV whose name I can't remember...Anyway, I met him there one year.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I have a manual jacuzzi. Usually works best on Mexican night at The Hangar.

    ReplyDelete
  131. THT ...

They don't have laws in Louisiana. True story: insurance commissioner there is an elected position. The previous commissioner is under indictment. The three prior to him (including the dad of CNN's Campbell Brown) have been convicted. The current commissioner's platform ... "I won't get arrested."

    ReplyDelete
  132. My wife hates the manual jacuzzi. Almost as much as the previously mentioned "Dutch Oven".

    ReplyDelete
  133. ehyou are gross - your poor wife!

    hawt guy was Dan Cortese!

    ReplyDelete
  134. Anonymous9:41 PM

Jet...I like the avatar....looks like the JETsons enjoyed the river. Any river requiring helmets is worthy.

Wait!...Lady...get that gun away from my head lady.... OK ... ok......I hate all politicians. Will you go now?

    ReplyDelete
  135. hmmm, how do I want to die this week, rapids or non-functioning parachute.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Jet, try these:

I've lived in Al,Ga,Fl,SC,Oh and Az. No state can match AL for college football intensity. In fact, the intensity borders neurosis and is why I hang out on sites based in Al.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Interesting story from al.com ... the Hoover school superintendent recommended eliminating some coaching supplements -- including three each of the football staffs at Spain Park and Hoover.

That would reduce the coaching staffs in the varsity, JV, and freshman programs at the two schools to 22 each.

    How will they survive?

    ReplyDelete
  139. The only state I have lived in that comes close is Tennessee primarily because of the nutty UT fans.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Anonymous9:50 PM

THT....the skydiving deathrate is much higher.

Soooo basically do you want to fall toward earth for 2 minutes knowing the outcome...or... drown for 5 minutes in a hydraulic hoping that's not the outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I'll just eat another giant bowl of ice cream and hope I have an MI in my sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I choose option 3:

A fine meal, with refreshing drink and dessert, making passionate love with Mrs. Jet, the day before my 100th birthday.

    ReplyDelete
  143. ESPN reports Erin Andrews hit on chin by foul ball at Dodgers' game.

Tests negative ... probable for Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.

    Whew. That was close.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Anonymous9:54 PM

Jet, our city in NW Ga has one 3A HS(1100 students). We have that many coaches also. There's like 20 of them on the sidelines.

    The QB club is well-heeled.

    ReplyDelete
  145. For all my bombast and bluster regarding Tiger Prowl and the like, I truly hate the way youth sports (including HS) have become overblown.

I don't like HS games on TV. I hate Little League baseball on TV. There should be no games nationally broadcast games of 11 year old kids playing baseball. Wanna put games on local cable? Fine.

But ESPN chasing the next LeBron or Reggie Bush? Don't like it. Even if means I don't get to see some five star.

    ReplyDelete
  146. We head out to Blue Ridge, GA Friday morning. Gonna ride the middel Ocoee on Saturday.

I did do the New River in WV. It was fantastic but very cold water. We went under the bridge you guys are talking about. I recall GM did a commercial there. They allowed a Blazer to bungee jump off the bridge. The guide said they did air the commercial in WV. I do recall seeing that here in AL.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I am jealous, WTC.

    Very jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Last hoorah with daughter before we send her off to AU.

    ReplyDelete
  149. WTC ...

Yup ... that's what we did last week with ElTurbo ... spent this week getting utilities set up ... Move in day is 5 weeks from today.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Someone asked if any of Auburn's seven QBs could start at another SEC school.

Don't ask Eddie. You know he thinks The Chosen One could start at Southern Cal ...

    ReplyDelete
  151. Anonymous10:10 PM

We are a baseball factory. There are around 30 kids from each age group playing travel ball in the East Cobb league. They all take private lessons. The kids that can't make the HS team move to the county (or even another county)in order to get on the field with one of those teams. Our town has less than 20,000 residents.

Our neighbor was devastated when his kid burned out on baseball and quit the HS team and rejected a D1 scholly. The $$$ spent on baseball would have paid 2 years of college. The kid now installs carpet for his dad's company.

The game is not fun for those kids. You can see it in their faces when playing.

    ReplyDelete
  152. That's it!

Tyrik is hereby decreed, by Jay G, as THE CHOSEN ONE.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Jet, we move in on the 27th for rush. Buying all that furniture for the apartment is killing me. I hope Southern Homes & Garden is stopping by for a photo shoot. She has nicer things than I have.

    ......Just helping out Eddie.

    ReplyDelete
  155. WTC ...

We're going used ... using the fam discount at Eastbrook Flea Market and Antique Mall!

    ReplyDelete
  156. You gotta give Eddie credit: He's consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I was over ruled. Most things are used but NICE used. I tried to get her to use the wicker furniture on the patio but that got me in trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Anonymous10:20 PM

WTC...we found a brand new furnished apartment 3 years ago when our daughter started at Ga So and she hasn't moved. She had no desire to live in the sorority house. So far we're convinced that was a more economical and much less hassle.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Anonymous10:21 PM

SCUBA is much riskier than than white water. The rafting was during the "quiet" part of the vacation.

Live a little! There's still a big world out there to enjoy!

Anyone who would step out of a perfectly good airplane (or jump off a cliff) is just plain nuts though!

  171. Good morning Sean and all the rest of the Hotties!

When we bought our AU condo for son and daughter back in 2005, it looked like a spread from a decorator magazine. Then daughter got married and took it all! WTC, she is also a princess with a queen's taste.

Now with son it is wall to wall electronics - 50" TV, surround sound, Wii, MacBook Pro, three other computers, you get the picture. But at least he bought all of that himself. And thankfully it was all insured when struck by lightning last week. Over $5000 worth of ruined stuff.

One more year and he is off of my payroll!

  172. That's right Jay G. Southern Cal missed out on a gem of a QB and we are very fortunate to have TR!
