8.17.2009

Days to kickoff: 19

Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

19

HAPPY DAVE BECK DAY!!!

Huntsville native Dave Beck was an All-SEC and ACADEMIC All-SEC cornerback for the 1972 Amazin's. His sure hands placed him No. 2 on Auburn's list of career interceptions, trailing only Buddy McClinton. Beck led the Tigers with 6 inteceptions during his first year with the varsity in 1970. His sure hands were also of great utility as holder for Auburn's extra point and field goal attempts, playing a crucial role in Auburn's 17-16 win over UA-T in the 1972 Iron Bowl as he calmly handled an errant snap on Auburn's first PAT.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to witness that Iron Bowl, but I did attend the 1972 Gator Bowl. The 9-1 Auburn Tigers were 11-point underdogs to the 8-3 Colorado Buffaloes. Beck's 5 unassisted tackles, fumble recovery and interception helped Auburn build a 17-3 lead. But Mr. Beck wasn't finished. With under two minutes remaining, he threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to TE Dan Nugent and Auburn proved the oddsmakers wrong for the seventh time that season.

The 24-3 dismantling of Colorado propelled the 10-1 Tigers to a Top 5 ranking in the final AP Poll.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* Trey Gainous

* Jaret Holmes

Let's hear some shout outs!!!

    Neil Caudle

Probably will go down as the cleanest #19 jersey ever worn by a QB

    ReplyDelete
  5. Happy Darryl Wilkes day

    ReplyDelete
  6. Does anyone know the status of Phillip St Peirre?

    ReplyDelete
  7. i don't remember seeing him yesterday. i may have just missed him at Fan Day. dunno.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Jay G, i caught up on watching some of your videos this weekend. i loved the cause and effect portion with Fannin. It was great, i just hope that gets cleared up by Sept 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good Morning Hot Ones!! I think I read that PPL was not going to rejoin the team until after classes started. I took that to mean he would be present and accounted for on Tuesday.

A little CFL update for the Hottest of the Hots:

Prechae Rodriguez caught 3 balls for 33 yards in today's 23-33 Hamilton loss.

Tray Blackmon made three tackles in Calgary's 35-38 loss to Edmonton. Blackmon was injured in the fourth quarter on a questionable block. He got an MRI on his ankle and is still awaiting the results.

Damon Duval was 3-3 on field goals and 4 for 4 on extra points in Montreal's 39-12 win. Duval also punted nine times with a long of 60 yards.

When is the CFL going to wise up and broden the fan base in lower North America by partnering with EA Sports for Canadian Football as a vg?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I would love a Canadian football video game.

Would it fare better than the arena football franchise?

    ReplyDelete
  12. War Eagle Monday!!
Just needed to make at least a weekly comment....

When the season gets started, then we'll have more to discuss instead of just speculating.

Thanks for all the great reminders THT!

And Jay for all the great video! (Still getting the Advertiser!)

    ReplyDelete
  13. So... not to pile on the "I'd rather not talk about last year" comments from the videos this weekend, I just read this little gem from Eric Smith (via EW): "Coach (Gus) Malzahn is a perfectionist. He runs everything at a two-minute pace, and we didn't really run it like that last year."

I'm so ready to get these guys on the field to see what it's really like.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anonymous10:18 AM

I'd be all over that as well, Sean.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous10:20 AM

I wonder how Eric Smith will fit in with this system. He strikes me as a power guy, short yardage specialist.

    ReplyDelete
  16. THT - going back to your Tucker Frederickson post...did you know that you are almost impossible to argue with? Nice job! I am not old enough to have seen him play, but I have read about him and heard some stories from my dad. I have one of his football cards from when he played with the Giants. That thing could use an autograph!

Sean - for some reason your Arsenal logo makes me want a beer, and it's only 10:20. Of course, it's definitely beer o'clock in the UK.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hmmm beer sounds good right about now...Bass...yum.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Trey Gainous deserves a shoutout ... he had a punt return for a TD as a freshman in Knoxville, but also had a HUGE-MONGUS catch against UAT in the game winning drive.

I believe it was 4th and 4 or 5 when Gainous came in motion from the right side, turned up field at the snap, dragging from left to right across the middle. He made a sliding catch of a low throw from Burger.

A couple of runs later, and and we were inside the UAT 10 to set up the Burger pitch to Tim Jessie, who handed off on the reverse for the TD.

If Gainous doesn't make that catch, UAT wins the game.

    ReplyDelete
  19. * correction ...

    dragging right to left ...

    ReplyDelete
  20. what number was shane wasden?

    ReplyDelete
  21. One of my favorite players Dave Bck. He was Lee High School(of Huntsville) Qurterback and a really good one. He stood only 5'7 3/4" tall but was a giant on the football field. How he evergot to play at a big SEC school like Auburn I will never know.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Remember when the CFL was in such classy places as Shreveport, LA?

    ReplyDelete
  23. oh, and B'ham, Memphis, Baltimore, and San Antonio.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I thinking Wasden was #8, but don't remember for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anonymous11:08 AM

When does the HS preview from the Advertiser release?

    Of have I missed it?

    ReplyDelete
  26. PF - are you suggesting in any way that my hometown of Memphis, TN is not classy?

Memphis' professional football history has been funny. We did have Lex Luger (the wrestler) and Reggie White on the USFL showboats team, but it has been downhill from there. We had the Mad Dogs in the CFL and the Pharaohs in the Arena league and some XFL team also. And of course, the Tennessee Oilers played there for a couple of years while they waited on their stadium. I remember Memphis getting a lot of bad press because they never sold many tickets to the Oilers games. Of course, they finally did for the Pittsburgh Steelers-Oilers game, and the crowd was about 75% Pittsburgh fans. Go Memphis!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous11:23 AM

How about a little Jaret Holmes memory?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like the dangerous mystique surrounding Memphis.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Michael, I have been to the center of Memphis culture, namely Graceland, and classy is the word that came to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous11:30 AM

    MJT,

Last I saw, Lex Lugar was suffering form some major illness/injury or something.

    What's the story there?

    ReplyDelete
  31. That 1997 Iron Bowl was incredible. Let me say this. I usually support our coach, but if we lose an Iron Bowl the way Bama lost that one, the coach should be given his walking papers before he leaves the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I thought Superman beat up Lex Lugar real bad or something, but it has been a long time since I saw that movie.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I expect PPL to be back in some capacity on Tuesday.

    ReplyDelete
  34. From the previous thread, thanks mytommyd for your encouragement. I have settled in as IV and will try to offer some meaningful substance to the HOBTON family of true Auburn friends. I have enjoyed the videos of the Auburn wins over the Evil Empire. I sure wished that there was one of our total beat down of the enemy from my freshman year when we put a real hurting on them, 40 to 0 in 1957. Of course, that was a catalyst for them to get busy and get the Bahr home. It was 34 to 0 at halftime. Shug was a true gentleman and did not run the score up on them in the second half even though he could have. WAR EAGLE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dave Beck - Very nice to look at back in the day!!! Haven't seen him lately.

I was at that Gator Bowl.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Please forgive me. From my previous post "HABOTN". How could I?

    ReplyDelete
  37. So IV your name is pronounced "four" not "eye vee" correct? Just checkin.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Memphis - Home to the Liberty bowl where I got to meet David King going through the stadium tunnel after the game. Love watchin Bo run all over those hogs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Seni, HS preview runs this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  40. There's nothing like second-rate (at best) minor league football. When the Birmingham Americans won the World Football League title in 1974 (I believe), they celebrated their victory in the lockerroom while sheriff's deputies supervised the repossession of all the team's equipment.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The XFL was my favorite upstart league, although I only watched about half of one game.

Seriously, did NBC actually think that people would buy into Vince McMahon running a football league?

I think it's championship game is still the lowest rated prime time broadcast in network TV history.

    ReplyDelete
  42. As Homer Simpson said "The X stands for Extreme".

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anonymous12:17 PM

Thanks, Jay G. I'll pick one up for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Also, the WFL had the greatest team name in the history of sport ... The Hawaiians. Not the Honolulu Hawaiians, or the any other geographic designation. They were just "The Hawaiians."

    ReplyDelete
  45. ElTurbo just finished his first class as an AU student ... Spanish ... fellow classmate: Barrett Trotter.

Saw Josh Bynes on the concourse.

Dad misses him. More than that, he's jealous.

    Youth. Wasted on the young.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sensi - I am not sure if Lex Luger has an illness or is even alive, but I do know he gave this awesome interview after his prime:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHTj7qfnTak

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have to disagree with Jet on the best team name ever. I still vote for the Idaho Vandals, but I'm a thuggish sort.

Please caution ElTurbo that it's frowned upon to interrupt class to ask for an autograph. Don't ask how I know.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Best high school name ever:

Poca High School in Poca, WV

    Poca Polka Dots

    ReplyDelete
  49. J-Z ...

ElTurbo is more the type to tell Barrett, "Gee, sucks you're hurt. You could be competing with Caudle to see who gets the clipboard."

    ReplyDelete
  50. Actually, one of the best ever is at a school that is no longer a high school. In Barbour County, there used to be Rebecca Comer High School.

They were the Rebecca Comer King Kongs.

Of course, we still have the Frisco City Whippets.

Thankfully, consolidation in Lamar County took care of the irritatingly named Millport Junior Tide.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I agree, jet. My sister is done with her classes for the day. Now she's off with some new friends to the Gump to get a homecooked meal. First day of classes and she's already got a friend bringing her home for food.
I'm not sure if this girl lives in the dorm with her or is one of her new sorority sisters.
It was at least a month before I got a homecooked meal after I moved to college. She gets one after the first day of class.

I'm goi g to gave to find out if she has any classes with football players. She is in the sociology dept.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My wife had a class with Tre Smith, TJ Jackson, and a bunch of footballers back a few years ago. Apparently the discussion of race relations came up, and teh significance of the N word was discussed. According to my wife, Tre Smith said to another player in the class, "Hey (insert football player's name. My wife can't remember who), remember the time I said 'What's up my n____' and you got really mad at me?"

That story makes me laugh, because I could totally see Tre as being the guy who thinks he's buddy-buddy enough with someone to use that word.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Michael,

That was awesome. "These t-shirts are too tight Billy!"

I need to shop where the guy doing the interview dresses.

Also, I noticed that there was a link to the great "Boom goes the dynamite" clip off to the side.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And I thought the Sidney Lanier Poets were bad....

    ReplyDelete
  55. rk - I also like how the interviewer starts the interview by yelling "Mr Luger, Mr Luger!" as if he is trying to fight for position amongst other beat reporters or something.

    ReplyDelete
  56. When I was in HS, some of the girls had the habit of shoe-polishing cars on game days with the admonition "You Can Trust a Trojan!"

    ReplyDelete
  57. The HABOTN turns to raslin. Argh!!! This is scary. There has to be some other news out there.

    ReplyDelete
  58. mytommyd,
Either four or "eye vee", I am not particular. As I said yesterday, I am the fourth in line in my family to have my name, very proud of that fact. More proud that I come from a long line of Auburn supporters in my family.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I want to go out for wings and beer with Rick Flair. Is that so wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Completely off topic... But does anyone happen to have the Excel spreadsheet with the helmet schedule for all D1 schools broken down by conference?? If so, could you email it to me. Please.
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I've got it at home Dusty. If you don't have it by then, I'll send it to you.

    ReplyDelete
  62. D Miller:

    ReplyDelete
  63. JZ I'd rather have beer with Tommy Wildfire Rich!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I just looked for it but apparently I printed it off and then deleted the file.

It's got some interesting versions of helmets on it. I guess they had their hand slapped by the NCAA or something.

My favorite is Kentucky, whose helmet has the state of Kentucky on it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. That would be much appreciated.

Am I the only one having trouble keeping ip with all the name changes going on around here?

    ReplyDelete
  66. That's nothing ... I've got a helmet with an Excel spreadsheet on it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. IV-Z, we know each other. OA?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Don't forget about the Macon Whoopee.

At some point, some genius evidently had this thought: "Hockey in Macon, GA would be a successful business venture". I'd like to give them a Nelson Muntz Ha-Ha.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Personally, I'm lookin' forward to Jay G's "What I've Learned" later on today because I don't know what I've learned, but whatever I learned it's important.

UAT is in the Axis of Evil.

    ReplyDelete
  70. don't forget the UC-Santa Barbara Banana Slugs. one of my faves

    ReplyDelete
  71. IV,

That is a distinct possibility. Son named G?

    ReplyDelete
  72. There was a high school team in Alabama at one time that was called the Red Tops but I can't remember who it was. We still have the Highland Home Flying Squadron.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Slocomb Red Tops

    ReplyDelete
  74. IV-Z, I ain't saying I do and I ain't saying I don't but you and I see each other at the PHS Lions football games now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Careful about that Sidney Lanier stuff Kristinuh

Oh yeah I'm just catching up on the posts.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks George W. Jet. My memory isn't as good as it once was.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Isn't there a small college named the Aardvarks. Somewhere out west I think

    ReplyDelete
  78. I remember my days with the Flying Squadron of the Alabama Air National Guard at Dannelly Field during Vietnam. During those perilous days, we won the decisive battle for air supremacy over East Vaughngomery, which paved the way for the spread of democracy and economic development outside the Bypass.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Still love the name "Zips" with Zippy the Kangaroo as the mascot.

    ReplyDelete
  80. It is indeed a small world IV.

I guess I should warn everyone that IV played a large role in shaping j-z into what he is today.

I'll let you come to your own conclusions.

IV, think we'll get the 4th in a row this year?

    ReplyDelete
  81. J-Z ...

I'm not sure that's something IV wants on his resume.

    ReplyDelete
  82. How far is Mike McNeal for participating in practise?

    ReplyDelete
  83. I don't think anyone wants that to be common knowledge!

    ReplyDelete
  84. mytommy, I am a Lanier grad actually.

DMiller, I sent you the helemt schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Long Beach State Dirtbags baseball is one of my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  86. My mistake -- I was thinking of the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes. I knew there was an "A" at the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  87. The topic of what we have learned will definitely be interesting. The naming of Todzilla as the starter brought about an understanding of what a well organized circle jerk last season became.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Steve, you aren't looking back at the past are you? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Anonymous1:32 PM

    MichaelJanTerry,

    Greatest Promo Ever

    - Sensi

    ReplyDelete
  90. My favorite alternate nickname, though, is the baseball team from Delta State.

Ordinarily known as the Statesmen ... they are also known as the Fightin' Okra.

I need to get a Fightin' Okra shirt and hat in the biggest way.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Hmmm, learning from the past I suppose, or taking pride in the quality of circle jerks we have been able to produce.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ah, well in that case Steve, reminisce away...

    ReplyDelete
  93. Sensi, someone needs to tell that dude to blow his nose before he does an interview.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Check the collegefootballstore.com site W Jet. They have them there.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Thanks, K.

Jet, I have searched for a fighting okra t-shirt with no luck. If you find one let me know where.

    ReplyDelete
  96. TommyD to the rescue.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yes, I am making you copy and paste...

    http://www.bkstr.com/ProductDisplay/10001-10003-10163-4000000000000142602-1?demoKey=d

    ReplyDelete
  98. The one Kristina found is actually much better than the one I found

    ReplyDelete
  99. I'm thinking as much as I can about Okra to distract us from Steve's contemplation of "Theater in the Round."

    ReplyDelete
  100. I am trying to avoid what little work I have to do...anything else you guys want me to look up?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Something, Kristina. Anything. Everything.

How about a tale of the tape of the high school statistics of Caudle, Todd, Moseley, Burns, Rollison and Trotter?

    That should keep you busy.

    ReplyDelete
  102. That looks more like the Fighting Jalapeno's.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hey, the fighting jalepenos sounds like a pretty cool name.

    ReplyDelete
  104. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Not that I agree, I just wanted to see if it would make it 3 times in a row.

    ReplyDelete
  106. IV - fwiw, I too am a IV. Unless my son chooses to resurrect it, it ends with IV.

Looks like we could come up with a game of 6 Degrees of J-Z. He and I grew up in the same neighborhood (at different times), he and Chocolate were hoodlums together, he and George/Jet were...well, that's about all I have to say about that.

    ReplyDelete
  107. It wasn't THAT awesome

    ReplyDelete
  108. Most people would prefer to be further than Six Degrees away from me.

    ReplyDelete
  109. J-Z ...

    The restraining order works.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I'm going to continue to let you think that.

    ReplyDelete
  111. And the 12 gauge picks up where the R.O. ends.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Kristina,
the email you sent... The SEC tab was the only one updated for the 09 season??

    ReplyDelete
  113. Do business with Dave Beck (in ATL)from time to time, less frequently lately....great golfer too by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Norm, if by some chance it were actually true that I ever associated with j-z, the term would be "hooligans", not "hoodlums". That said, it is possible that j-z was also a "hoodlum" in his spare time.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Do we all get clipboards to hold on Neil Caudle day?

    ReplyDelete
  116. It is going to be interesting to see what happens with Caudle. He could end up the number 2 guy, but it seems unlikely at this point. Hopefully he will find a way to contribute in other ways, possibly holding kicks. The kid has had a rough time on the plains. I don't think he has ever been able to adjust to the speed of the college game, but that is only a guess on my part.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Well, shoot, Miller. Sorry about that. I guess I only looked at the SEC schedule....

    ReplyDelete
  118. Sensi -

Read something on Lex Lugar a year (or more?) ago. All this is from memory so take it with a grain of salt.

He was on a flight either to or from the left coast when he had a severe pain in his neck. Tried to "Correct it himself" - pop his own neck or something. Had to take him off the plane on stretcher and spent a good amount of time paralyzed from a blown out disc. Spent many months at Shepard Clinic here in Atlanta. He "found religion" during this time and was living at Shepard while mentoring to other paraplegics. I think he has limited mobility back now and can walk - some what. He is also just about broke.

    LT

    ReplyDelete
  119. LT - that jives with my memory of something I read in the AJC a year or so ago.

    ReplyDelete
  120. j-z, I just wasn't sure you had the time to be a full-fledged hoodlum, given the hours you put into being a hooligan. In either case, you were definitely not holding the clipboard (or so I've heard).

    ReplyDelete
  121. Not that his experience isn't real, but it's amazing how many people who used to have money hit rock bottom and then find religion.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I'm terribly upset now. I just saw a commercial for Reverse Mortgages and the "senior citizen" woman looking into it doesn't look all that much older to me. I guess I'll have to look into one too. I'm sure my AARP membership information is soon to hit my mailbox. Dangit.

    Keep Hate Alive.

    ReplyDelete
  123. 2009 Helmet Schedule

This is the only one I could find, DM. It uses throw back helmets and I didn't much care for the lettering, but you can play around with it.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'm going to need a little bit more time on the What We Have Learned item.

    Gimme 3:30 CDT.

    Thanks. xoxoxox

    ReplyDelete
  125. Jay G must've learned a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Sorry DM that was just the SEC I'll see if I can find a full one.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I would like to tell the SEC to kiss my rear! Good luck with this new "media" policy and not allowings fans to Twitter or update facebook during events. I'm going to do it just to spite them.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I'm so bored and procastinating so badly I actually looked up Lex Luger.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Hey, feng's back. I've missed him/her.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Feng!

What up, bro? We've missed you.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Zookeeper, if you're that bored, hit feng's link and explore it fully. Then report back to us.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Norm, I'm bored, not stupid.

And I agree about the new media policy. I get they are trying to be proactive against new technology that may jeopardize their TV contracts, but fb and twitter are not going to take away from anyone watching the game on TV. Also, this is completely unenforceable.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I think Claudette just arrived the Gump. Sheesh!

    ReplyDelete
  134. Anonymous3:31 PM

Claudette's remnants are dropping water on the students as I type this.

    ReplyDelete
