Post-practice notes, 8/14
Hey everyone. That's another practice in the books. Here are the significant things I saw and heard afterward.
- DB Walt McFadden said the factions that undermined the team last season (ie Burns Backers and Todd's Toadies) were still in effect prior to Burns' passionate plea for unity Thursday afternoon.
``It got to the position (in 2008 where) … we were like 'I don't know, man. We can't win it with him.' We know that Chris Todd is the guy so (there's) no: We should have this person, we should have that person. It's Chris Todd." - McFadden is a big Burns fan and pities the defensive coordinator who must find ways to stop No. 18. That's a near-verbatim summary.
- Gus Malzahn said Burns still will work with quarterbacks in practice at times.
- Malzahn on Chris Todd: ``As a quarterback, he's kind of got that `it' factor -- where he’s got some things that you don't have to coach," Malzahn said. ``It comes natural to him. That' s important and it's probably more savvy than anything. That's what I've been impressed with."
- I didn't get the sense that Burns will be The Solution as Auburn's Wildcat back. The guys Malzahn featured in previous season are fast fast fast. That is not Burns.
- DE Dee Ford is working at linebacker because of depth issues.
- TB Ben Tate said Bo Jackson, former Heisman Trophy winner, told players to make the most of their opportunities now because they don't last long.
- As Nooj reported a while back, the freshman quarterback from Texas is "ty-RICK" Rollison. Malzahn apparently is wrong to call him "ty-REEK."

what?
Don't see a scenario where Burns won't have a hard time finding a spot to contribute.
Is that a double negative?
I once had a fraternity brother run for SGA.
His slogan: Vote Pufy. He's not saying you're not stupid.
I just write what my mind says dude.
I write what the man in my head says.
That's why you're the pro.
I write what I think the Ewok with a whip who sets next to me all day (who no one else sees) wants me to write. I must be pleasing him so far since he hasn't hit me yet. I think he wants me to write weird things.
So, is Burns "fast fast, "fast," or "not so fast" (since he is not "fast fast fast," mein freund?
Or, are you not saying he's not unfast????
As Mike Vick would say, I have gratification for your clarification.
You say TyRick, I say TyReek. He be the future. Todd is the present. Franklin is the ghost of season's past.
ehyou substance = fail.
Burns is fast, not extremely fast. His best asset may be his quickness rather than speed.
So reading McFadden's thoughts a little deeper, it sounds like the team is still divided on who should play QB. This is sad news to hear for me, because that means that Kodi has been bad enough not to even be considered a QB anymore, yet some players still think he is better than Todd. Great.
I concur. Quick, not fast.
Is it possible that there's a secret position called wildcat2 that burns will be playing at least a couple of snaps per game?
Walt is saying the team was divided, but no longer is that way.
If it's wildcat2, I want to see Suzy Kolber and Keith Olbermann host.
Apologies for this re-post; the old thread became obsolete.
I'd like to throw this out there, despite that it's an "is what it is" kind of thing.
``His arm has gotten a little bit fatigued, but he still has zip on the ball,'' Malzahn said.
Todd, who did not throw in the spring and has been splitting reps with at least 2 other qb’s, has an arm that is fatigued a little bit. I can’t grasp for a second how the coaches believe his arm will hold now that he is taking all of the reps and will be playing as the #1 for at least 12 games. My comprehension is sputtering and that aggravates boknowsbo.
Wildcat2 = Scout team
New for Lifetime's Fall lineup: "Wildcat - The Ocho"
Or, as Bo Jackson said; "I coulda busted that line and I wish that I had did."
boknowsbo....3 and out?
Todd's Toadies, I could see Steve wearing a jacket with this on the back...perhaps with a fantastic muscley frog mascot, like the one from the SNES game, Battletoads.
I agree with Michael. If there is a group that still think KB is good enough to be the QB after 3 OC'c have basically said he is not, AU still has a problem.
Had a great lunch today.
Just sayin'.
Jay G. Tate said...
Walt is saying the team was divided, but no longer is that way.
It seems like a non-issue to me.
2 of those oc's got fired
JGT, regarding your Suzy Kolber/Keith Olberman suggestion - not good. We don't want a drunk Joe Namath showing up at AU practices.
How about Stuart Scott and Bill Pidto instead?.....on second thought, scratch that. I'd rather have a drunk Joe Namath around than Stuart Scott.
Agree with Michael and WTC. KB is not the QB. Let us joyfully move forward.
There is a huge difference from this year and last...last year the coaching staff was split between Todd & Burns and probably making the situation far worse than it should have been.
What idiot traded in his 1985 Maserati BiTurbo with 18,480 miles to be crushed under "Cash for Clunkers" program? That's just ridiculous.
boknowsbo, health QB arms get fatigued this time of year.
Norm. i can't watch you tube videos at work. so i am going to assume it was some ripped up, good loooking dude doing awesome things in that video. it was supposed to be me
Norm- also Bo doesn't eat KGC. He ate raw deer meat he caught in the woods, with his bare hands
I had a nice lunch too. Weird huh?
Bo Jackson would have been the most hideously amazing wildcat quarterback in the history of Earth.
I almost had a nice lunch, but didn't. Does that count for anything?
Big Snacks ...
OCs get fired. It's just what they do. It doesn't mean they're bad coaches.
Harrison - you should not make such assumptions but you should be sure to watch it at home. I once killed a cougar/mountain lion/puma with my bare hands so I'm not really impressed with that Bo story of yours. However, I didn't eat it because I just wasn't very hungry.
Hey check out this site:
http://collegefootballbelt.com/
It treats college football like boxing, where the champion has a belt. In this line of reasoning, the champion is always decided on the field.
Notice that we held the belt as recently as 2007. Bammers haven't held it since 1987. Ha! Bammers lose again!
for the record, I am completely and 100% behind Todd as our qb. RB-U doesn't need a qb that can throw the deep ball, anyhow, do we?
Video is UP.
You know, I've been thinking about the deep ball issue. It's true Todd's deep ball is ugly and thrown way too high for a real life college football player, but it's not like Kodi was completing deep balls left and right last year. His incompletions were just thrown harder.
Yes, but Michael mistakes should be made at full speed
Yeah, Toddzilla may throw the ball high, but Chris Leak threw the ball like he was trying to hit an invisible blimp, and he seemed to do alright.
WOW....Cant believe my name or nickname(and everyone calls me nooj by the way)made it onto my favorite Auburn blog. I consider this an honor and thank you from the bottom of my heart JayG. You like me, You really like me!
Love your blog Jay thanks for the hard work.
Put your faith in Todd and he will lead you to the promised land. Also, see Scottie B for your Todd Toadies t-shirt. Fear Todzilla!!!
Look for Kodi to be used at the outside receiver slot out of the Wildcat formation. That's where they typically move the QB, but in Kodi's case it adds an extra element ... he'd be an excellent threat for screen/double pass/decoy.
How would Kodi do at safety? Discuss.
CODE BLUE!
Love this quote from Andy Bitter,
"Malzahn said Tyrik Rollison will get the majority of reps as the backup for now so that the team can make an assessment of where he's at. He said they have a good idea of what Neil Caudle can do, since he had 15 spring practices and the first week of August to evaluate him."
Yeah... they know what he can do. He can hold the hell out of a clipboard.
It's pronounced TIE-rick... he clarified this in an interview!
