Practice notes, 8/18

Hey everyone. Let's get to business.
  • Gene Chizik indicated LB Eltoro Freeman's most pressing physical issue is a hamstring; not the wrist issue that elicited a cast.

  • WR Philip Pierre-Louis was on the field tonight in helmet and shorts. Chizik, asked if it was fair to say PPL has a long way to catch up, Chizik said: ``Yes, that would be very fair to say."

  • Kodi Burns said he's still working at quarterback, under the auspices of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, after each practice. Burns spends practice playing wideout.

  • Auburn's practice didn't end util 9:30 tonight. That's pretty late for college students who (presumably) need to study at least a little. Chizik said he's going late tonight and tomorrow to help avoid snags with class schedules. He is planning to move practices up to 5 p.m. or so beginning Friday.

  • WR Anthony Gulley said he "expected to redshirt" this season, but said he has been practicing with the first-team offense fairly often. He also is playing "behind" Mario Fannin in the sense that Gulley is shuttling between the 2 (outside wideout) and 3 ("H" back) positions like his more muscly teammate.

  • LB Joshua Bynes, in a rare move, gave a "you'll have to ask Coach Roof" when asked who is playing behind him at middle linebacker. That makes me think nobody is playing behind him.

  • Chizik said freshman S Daren Bates is challenging for a starting job. Keep in mind: Bates was a 2-star recruit.

That's all I have for now.

Scottie B, can you make visors?

is rod woodson (bate's olive branch teammate and all world bammer recruit) still on their team and challenging for playing time as a freshman?

that could speak to this staff's talent evaluation or to AU's lack of depth at safety.

remember, $aban picked daunte culpepper over drew brees to QB the fins...

great work as always jgt. first with the update tonight.

not with the logo we're using Kathy. visors are tricky b/c they're harder to hoop and you can't put the stitches as close to the bill. if we went that route we could put HABOTN on it or make the flame about a third of the size it is on the caps. if we were going to order them embroidered we could (again, it would be smaller) we would have to pay a set-up fee. my guy did it for free so we save money that way. that probably doesn't make sense. sorry. it's late here in the ET.

i meant to say if we ordered the visors from the cap company with the logos already on them they can do it but it is much more expensive in the quantities that we will be doing b/c of set-up fees.

Keeping it in mind, is this a testament of how well bates is doing or how incredibly thin our secondary is?

Don't worry about it Scottie. I was just checking. I have a small head with very short hair, so I get lost in a hat. You do great work.

Eltoro's hamstring is a huge issue. Some players end up having an entire season with trouble with their hamstring. That is scary.

As for PPL, I would at least like to see him and McCalebb returning the kickoffs. Can you imagine the choice the guy kicking off would have. Well, I can kick to that dang fast guy or that dang fast guy.

Yep Steve. I'm much more concerned with the hamstring injury than the wrist injury.

Otis Mounds? nice. ha.

stars? we don't need no stinkin' stars to win in the SEC do we? we'll take 2 & 3 stars all day long & coach 'em up. wait....wrong coaching staff. if the kid can play so be it.

Kathy, i can put the website on the front of a visor in 2-color if you want. that would look fine, but no campfire. sorry. we can always do a beanie for those november games! :)

I still can't get over our shortage at linebacker. If we weren't known as runningback u, it would be linebacker u or defensive end u.

Injuries, or lack thereof, will be the tale of this season.

11:03 PM
Blogger Jonesy said...

Jay, my question wasn't at all rhetorical.

Sure, I could decide for myself but if I thought I knew everything going on then I certainly wouldn't be reading Auburn blogs to find out. I don't know the answer, I was interested in knowing if you had an opinion on it.

Speaking of Otis Mounds, where is Fred Smith circa 94 (corner/safety/constantly injured) but solid tackler and up for the occasional pick 6

Besides, everyone knows the great character and exploits of Jason Campbell, and Jet provided us earlier today with a synopsis of the accomplishments of one Reggie Slack, so...

HAPPY CAMPBELL-SLACK DAY!!!

Jonesy, I think it's part that Auburn has almost nothing at safety ... and that recruiting services base most of their rankings on hype, politics and the rolling of dice.

I hope that clears things up for you.

No not related to D Miller, last name isn't even Miller. I got on here once before as Isaac Vasquez as I longed for the days of you coming on sports drive and talking to Neal about which "establishment" you guys would meet up at. Anyways love the vibe here and hope to participate daily.
