Practice notes, 8/23
I'll do this in stages.
STAGE ONE
STAGE ONE
- DeAngelo Benton has been named the starter at the "9" (wideout) position, though assistant Coach Trooper Taylor said that could change.
- Taylor said Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery have "basically locked their position up."
- Taylor on Montez Billings, who spent time today with the scout team: "Until he gets everything cleared with (Chizik) and back on page with doing things right, he and Philip (Pierre-Louis) are still in the same boat. Both of those guys have to prove they want to be Auburn Men to be back out there."
- Chizik had no comment when asked about Eric Smith's increasingly complex situation.
- Chizik said he won't institute a practice "deadline" for injured guys like Eltoro Freeman, Spencer Pybus and Byron Isom to earn consideration for the La. Tech game. ``They don't need quite as many reps as some of those other guys do. So you hope they have a great retention rate and they come back and pick it up real quick."
- Here is the closest I can get to an offense depth chart:
- "9" (outside): DeAngelo Benton, Darvin Adams, Kodi Burns, (Montez Billings), (Tim Hawthorne)
- "2" (outside): Terrell Zachery, Emory Blake, Quindarius Carr, Travante Stallworth
- "5" (utility receiver)
- When they go big: Tommy Trott, Philip Lutzenkirchen
- When they go small: Darvin Adams, Anthony Gulley, Kodi Burns
- When they go big: Tommy Trott, Philip Lutzenkirchen
- "4" (tailback): Ben Tate, Onterio McCalebb, (Eric Smith), Dontae Aycock
- "3" (utility back): Mario Fannin, Gabe McKenzie
- "1" (quarterback): Chris Todd, Tyrik Rollison/Neil Caudle, Kodi Burns, Clint Moseley
- RT: McCain, AJ Greene, (Aubrey Phillips)
- RG: (Byron Isom), John Sullen, Jorell Bostrom, Andre Harris
- C: Ryan Pugh, Bart Eddins
- LG: Big Snacks Berry, John Sullen, Jared Cooper
- LT: Lee Ziemba, Vance Smith
- "9" (outside): DeAngelo Benton, Darvin Adams, Kodi Burns, (Montez Billings), (Tim Hawthorne)

dominazione
she's so excited!
that looks pretty good, JGT.
btw, the link I posted on the old thread, mid right column of page 30 discusses Shug Jordan's X and Y solution to the 1952 substitution restrictions that went into effect.
Sorry to bust up the family reunion
is that Eye Tallian for Domino's Pizza?
that's what I'm thinking, PF.
i'm slow, how did they come up with that numbering system? Are they using derivatives or logarithms?
Madden '10, I think.
i hope Anthony Gulley gets on the field a bunch. I fell in love with him when you introduced us to him back in January.
Before "James in Bham" misinterprets "dominazione" into "Italian for kink" - she is likely younger than even your low threshold
Nice to see Zachery holding it down for the old school receivers. We have really only heard about how well the new guys are doing. Speaking of which, Benton must really be doing well because it seemed that Adams would have won a starting position from the reports.
Is the QB like the pitcher, and number 1 for those scoring at home? Hopefully all of those guys are #2 because they're catchers, and not #2 like Franklin's Spread for Dummies.
Oh, and hopefully they are all swifter than "catcher's speed"
It took me three months to finally get one first post.
Life's not fair.
DLO!
Can you believe they let Lindsay Lohan be a guest judge on Project Runway? That should have been Michael's gig.
Monica, please go back one thread. I typed so long that I got left behind. I have got to quit doing that or Mr. Tate is going to kick me off.
You watch Project Runway?
Even though Benton was in prep school and is a year older than most freshmen, it is still impressive for him to beat out the older guys. This is encouraging.
I may have to break down and read a book:
The anatomy of a game: football, the rules, and the men who made the game By David M. Nelson
or two:
50 Years of College Football: A Modern History of America's Most Colorful Sport By Bob Boyles, Paul Guido
Is Hawthorne so far back becasue of his injury?
I am a bit perplexed about the Gabe McKenzie utility thing. What is a utility back anyway?
i would guess so, jhag. He's not likely to be approved for play for a good while yet.
kind of like utility infielder, I suppose. Line up in the slot, at TE, or FB?
I'm glad I went back a thread for that story, IV. :-)
I left you a post there.
Also, I have a question for you that I'd like to ask you privately. Would you mind emailing me at monica_wareagle@yahoo.com ?
By the way Jay, good work. we appreciate you very much.
THT You can read Anatomy of a Game online. You probably already knew that.
So depending on how much we use a 4 receiver set, Blake could see some significant playing time, right?
Do parentheses = may not play at all?
nope, didn't know that.
books.google.com is missing pages.
where can i read the whole kit and kaboodle?
JZ I was just teasing you about Project Runway. Sorry.
on line for a 1994 book? Sure would beat $190 at Amazon.com, in which case I would continue my non-book reading habit.
No problem... I was being a smart aleck.
I have made some adjustments to the depth chart. I forgot to get Burns in there.
THT - I seem to be able to get all the pages here.
The Anatomy of a Game
j-z - I turned down that Project Runway gig. I am too much of a diva and it would have been a disaster.
Monica - including pages 101-247? plus all the illustrations?
Nope. Sorry about that, THT. It IS just a preview. :-(
So names in parentheses are either in the tub or in a fight club?
Mr. Tate's corrections answered my question.
Montez Billings has his own designation, d.
He's "crossways of the head coach."
Emory Blake is going to play.
Book it.
Monica, when you have time, check your mail box, you have an e-mail.
Maybe Billings should have delayed graduation until the end of the fall semester. I guess he misunderstood about the "no drops" mantra?
Billings has graduated and is crossways of the coach. that just begs for details to be released.
Billings goes to school at AU for 4 years and has no problems...now there are problems after he graduates. What's up?
You can read the full version of this one:
American Football
I wonder how many snaps our No. 2 line has taken collectively in their Auburn careers.
A dozen?
dnatl...drops would get him in trouble with Troop. HC issues normally indicate discipline or academic problems.
That number will obviously rise quickly jet. Maybe good, maybe not. We'll find out pretty quick.
2.0 meant to get that one. I expect DL to step up this week.
I'm talking abouth the late-registration sort of drops, not on the field - he could have delayed graduation maybe if he changed classes and added a few more electives for filler
Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?
Seems the coaches need to get the backups experience as soon as possible in each game without endangering the win.
Gosh that was easy to write...and dang hard to for a coach to execute.
Especially a new coach with something to prove.
I have added several notes to the main page.
Well j-z, the way I figure it, we can either fight or give.
You just keep thinkin' Butch. That's what you're good at.
THIS IS BILLY MAYS FOR THE UTILITY BACK ... THE ALL-PURPOSE BACK THAT CAN DO ALL THE THINGS YOU NEED A BACK TO DO FOR JUST $19.95! HE RUNS! HE CATCHES! HE BLOCKS! AND IF YOU CALL TODAY, YOU GET THE ALL NEW UTILITY RECEIVER ... ALL FOR $19.95!
dnatl...I guess I'm naive but why would earlier graduation affect his status with the HC? He doesn't have to go to grad school, he can pursue another degree.
Well maybe some extra time in the Tub will allow them to make the Club.
I hope they are healing and getting ready to play.
RIP Billy Mays
I wonder how many snaps Coach Gus wants to have in the first game and how many he'll actually get.
so to summarize,
can't make the club if you're in the tub
you're on scout team if you piss off Gene
you're going to jail if you kick ass at the hotel
can I get that with a rock?
I am now ready to make an educated guess that Eric Smith's long-term Auburn status is in doubt.
I didn't think that before.
Now I do. Let's see what happens when the arrest report comes out. To this point, it has not been made public.
Even if it was self defense against a drunk?
Then it would have to be because he was out too late and in the wrong place.
Calling a coach by his first name? ::gasp::
Hoopie - My understanding was that Billings had to enroll in graduate study in order to maintain "academic progress" after graduation, and that was causing problems
Who knows, I just like the idea of these guys going through late registration thinking "no drops, no drops" - of course, it is all electronic now, and they probably have the AlGore interwebs instead of the boxes of class cards
Well if utility backs can also work as linebackers, at that price I say get a couple dozen
Monica - your last link took me to iGoogle weather widget. How did you know that I've always had an interest in meteorology?
Paging Mr. Aycock, Dontae Aycock, please report to the sidelines with your game face on.
I'm surprised to hear the super harsh Eric Smith disciplinary actions (even if they are speculative).
j-z...
Perhaps not a bad thing.
J-Z, I meant to tell you I think I figured out the Scott Choco. enigma this AM. Could there be a "bar" in his name somewhere?
j-z - not quite the same as Otis Mounds being paged on the PA during the first half of a game (1991?)
Nice catch IV. You haven't slipped a bit. Remind me I need to call you tomorrow.
I played football with Otis Mounds's son last year, his dad helped coach a few practices, cool dude
LOL Oh well, THT. At least you got a little weather fetish fix out of that. The book is American football
by Walter Camp - 1893 - Harper & brothers and it's on Google somewhere.
Thanks Jhag ... now I feel old.
Jack@$$.
Thank you for the email, IV. I answered you, but I'm not sure it went through. I got a funky message when I replied that I think I corrected so let me know.
that made me feel old, and I probably not quite JGT-ancient
now get off my lawn
Thanks, Mon. I've got that cute little book, first edition. I read it about 2 years ago. Maybe that was the last book I read.
Hung on deck!
Apparently, I'm old enough to be jhag's daddy. That doesn't make me feel all happy inside.
Would be nice to hear from Denny Crum now that the season is upon us.
Mon - you got yahoo mail, well, sort of.
Monica, that's me, funky IV. Yes I got it and I am thinking it over. I won't tell what and just let the rest of them wonder what the offer was and what I am thinking about. And J-Z, I will be out of town for a year and a half so don't call. Yes, call me if you just have to but I am not cutting your parole time down.
Careful, IV, careful.
I was wondering about Denny Crum just yesterday, I liked his comments when I was lurking.
p.s. before I had the passion to post. That was for you Monica.
You better be nice to me, Jet. Apparently I am your pipeline to the hot ticket info, mister mayun!
Thank you for considering my proposition, Funky IV. I promise I'll make it worth your while. ;-)
Fine IV, I won't call. I'll just send you a note...attached to a brick.
Brother Jet, feel free to keep me on the straight and narrow, near the foot of the cross. I feel like a good old tent revival with Brother Jet at he podium, can I have an amen?
So what else is new J-Z? I have an idea that you may be looking for a contribution to your "whatever" fund and I am out of business just now.
Of course the revival has got to have some good old Southern Gospel quartet singing and dinner on the ground. I love me some gospel music. Come to think of it I like the dinner on the ground idea also. Fried chicken, sweet taters, green beans, corn bread, hush yo mouth.
How 'bout a WAR EAGLE!!!
AMEN!!!
Picks can be entered now, but there is no spread posted...
Btw, are we picking against the spread as of kickoff, or at time of the pick being made?
Could we pick them without the spread the first week since we don't have it?
Sup 4? I don't think we have met, I am Jhag.
IV ...
Absolutely. Just remember, if it ain't King James, it ain't Bible.
jhag - i lost track of you when i got rid of FB, which I only had for a month or so. You graduated this spring? Are you going to Ole Miss? Please relieve me of my ignorance.
ok, some of my ignorance
No, no, no, no and it's not a problem...I'm a senior this year...I got accepted Ole Miss already though...and sending applications to Auburn (obviously) Florida State, Clemson, USCe...and College of Charleston...
Monica, Im hoping you were serious about that Word document... People (not you, of course, but 'people') always think about stuff like that after the opportunity has passed.
Entourage on deck!
Entourage is here be back in 30
thanks jhag! Good luck with your sr year, and with all those apps.
I like what I am seeing in terms of receiver depth. As for the line, it is even more scary in comparison to the receiver depth.
Zteven - Yep, I've got it in a Word document. I'm in negotiations with the author for a more publicly accessible delivery as we speak. He's playing hard ball.
THT, I have read of the XYZ system Jordan used and found it intriguing.
Mon, ever been to Helvetia, WV? Andrew Zimmern highlighted a local establishment this week.
I dunno. Ask the keeper of the key (is Miller heading it up).
Anywhere Andrew Zimmern eats is somewhere I don't wanna. Dude has a stomach of steel.
Just so I can be like THT i'm coming up with a few suggestions for the coming days to kickoff and maybe a few to leave off.
Put On
#2 Otis Mounds (HABOTN fave)
#4 Chris Schelling (personal fave and all time fave AU DB
#5 Karsten Bailey (even though he was known to have the dropsies)
#9 Ken Alvis (though he later transferred to Troy best known for the first INT of Jaimie Howard in the 94 LSU game and running over said QB at the goal line.
#10 Patrick Nix (IMO most underrated AU QB of all time- just a winner)
#11 Stan White- outside of Sullivan has there ever been a bigger "face of the program" at the QB position?
#11 Karlos Dansby- Jay cutler still has "flashbacks".
To leave off:
Cooper "did he play 10 years" Wallace. This guy used to make me so mad I could have punched babies.
Yes, I've been there. 4Wheel drive came in very handy.
If it works the way it has in year's past, the line changes up until the day before kickoff of the first game for that week.
Don't know if this has been discussed but Mobile is getting a Momma Goldberg's. Beer and darts.
Video being produced right now.
ETA: 10:30 p.m. CDT.
All I know is, there's a lot of banjo music going on this week on Bizarre Foods.
Craig - you can rest easy. They're all there. Except stay away from babies on Friday.
Jared Cooper is 3rd string behind a true freshman? I can remember a heated recruiting battle between AU and the Evil Empire for his signature. I was hoping he might make a push for playing time this year, looks like that's not happening.
What lack of depth...
Monica, not me, I would never play hard ball, not an old softie like me. Check your e-mail box, there is a fresh one from me.
Ok if you must add Cooper "No Hands/Here's a Lookout Block" Wallace then could you please add childhood hero Shayne Wasden at #8. May soften the blow a little. My best friend and I have this saying that anytime you drop something then you have "Cooper Wallace'd it"
JayGT - I'll catch it in the morning when I wake up. Please drive safely back to the Gump.
Good night Hotties. And in case I don't catch you before I go to work in the a.m., y'all have a great Monday. I must report for incarceration tomorrow morning with bammer bernie. Then I have my parole hearing tomorrow evening. No HABOTN pour moi :-(
Craig,
I hope we can do better than Ken Alvis and Karsten "Hands Down" Bailey.
Depressed I was thinking the same thing about Jared Cooper of EAST Brewton/W. S. Neal fame.
What gives?
Craig - Wasden has been on the list from the get-go.
We called it an Obumanu thanks to the Ole Miss game in '01, I think.
I only put Ken Alvis in for that 1 memorable play. (More than Tim Hawthorne has done and he got love). Also consult your records book for Karsten Bailey- may remember Dameyunne Craig had to throw the ball to someone. (though i know what you mean with him short-arming balls)
I am trying to figure out this numbering system. Do I need a slide rule for this?
15 yards penalty on THT for mentioning the Obamanu Ole Miss drip.
Should do a poll on here of the player you disliked the most. I've already shown my hand but I imagine there are some funny ones out there of players people haven't cared for over the years. I imagine Eric Ramsey would get top billing so we'll take apps for #2
The players I disliked didn't play much. Try Greg Smith, Lectron Williams, Leon Hart... I hate the stars that fall before they even begin to shine.
depressed: I haven't heard much of anything about Jared Cooper. I figured he was the No. 2 behind Isom, but Grimes went with Sullen when Isom went down last week.
I was surprised, too.
Hey, Leon Hart tried to be good.
I watched that Ole Miss game replay the other night and my wife is like why are you watching this, you know how it ends. (All that was missing was her saying "They'll break your heart kid"
Jay, any idea when we might hear of Phillips is going to be elligible?
Monica, I have heard little news on Cooper since he arrived in Auburn. Sullen was earlier thought to be a probable redshirt, but that looks to be a change in plans looking at the depth chart.
If Cooper can't break the two-deep chart now, I don't think that is a very good sign for him.
Dang it folks. Don't discuss that Ole Miss game. That was one of the most frustrating....blah!!!!! I can't take it. We pulled a Dubose!!!
Oh man Darryl Lectron Williams from Vigor High. Good one. One I like that I can't remember if he got love for #23 was Fred Beasley- fullback in 95'ish. BEAST.
You could be right about Cooper, depressed. But there are just some kids that take a little longer to adjust to college and also the work it takes to play college football. Many could get by on athletic ability in HS. It doesn't work that way in college.
Jay G,
Would love to hear if you could or want to which players were your faves to interview and talk with and those who were less than pleasant to be around. Would be fascinating to hear who is/was nice and who is a D'bag.
SteveFC...I have a slide rule if you find the need for one. I might even let it go cheap. Nah, it's in my things to keep that was a part of my earlier life. You know sentimental crap that doesn't mean anything to anyone else but you?
Fred Beasley was one of those backs I loved. He didn't usually bust the big run, but he was always ready to play and very solid. He is another in the mold of Heath Evans, Tommy Agee, Rudy Johnson. He was the anti Tristan Davis/Brad Lester.
Yeah, my pop had a slide rule too. I use to find it fascinating, but never learned how to use it.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Regarding that 2003 game against a team from mississippi who's mascot is a Rebel. Didn't Southpark do a episode and say that after 5 years things that are bad can be funny. Can't remember what they related it to like AIDS can now be funny. Maybe we should adopt that rule here.
Jet turn on your Yahoo PLEASE :-)
Faves: Sen'Derrick Marks, Quentin Groves, Ben Leard, Tre Smith (later in his career), Adlai Trone, TJ Jackson (earlier in his career), Tony Franklin, Eddie Gran, Doc Robinson, Hayden Gliemmo, Whitney Boddie
Least favorite by a MILE: Chris Porter
I have always thought of Craig Stevens as a mild mannered guy that didn't say much until I saw him tweet "LMAO" about the reporters fighting over interviewing him. There is something special about a kid laughing at some "adults" making idiots out of themselves that just seems special to me. I like people that don't take life too seriously.
SteveFc..So I am old enough to be your pop huh? I used this slide rule in many, many classes at Auburn. Even used it some in the earlier part of my working life.
Steve, I am not giving up on Cooper, I don't know what type of player he is.
But, for a true freshman thought to be a project to come in and move ahead of you on the depth chart, that is usually a pretty bad sign for any player. I hope J Cooper can be a contributor.
Funny you mention Adlai Trone. We watched the 98 (i think thats right) Georgia game. Had never seen/heard of him but there he is after the game celebrating with a winter cap on with pieces of the hedge stuck in it dancing like he just sealed the game with an INT. We all adopted him there as a fan fave. You could see he had personality and maybe not as much talent.
IV, just holler if you want me to help you across the street or something. I am 45 at the moment, but that number seems to keep rising.
ditto Depressed
This Adlai Trone talk confuses me. I recognize most player names. I draw a complete blank with him.
Trone shows up at Pro Day every other year or so (he's a financial planner) and it's always a pleasure catching up with him. He's a really cool dude.
Trone was a walk-on safety who earned a scholly and was decent for a few years.
I wanna say he played 1999-01?
As long as the number is rising SteveFC, you are okay. When it stops rising that is when the fun is over and they through dirt in your face. I do have a 45 year old son myself. Apretty good kid as kids go.
Hey Mon
You do have a point depressed. Considering the shape of our offensive line, I would have expected him to be working his butt off realizing that playing time is available. To have a young pup show up and beat him out definitely says something.
By the way SteveFC.. I don't think my slide rule will help in interpriting Gus' numbering system. Just hope that it baffles the enemy as much as it does us.
Those were during my dating years, which caused me to be distracted. Those evil women.
lol @ "as kids go"
Hey Craig
So is there a way to meet up with a beat hack and buy him a beer and pick his brain about all the questions you wanna ask but you can't say during a radio interview. Big fan of the odd-ball stories and personalities involved with Auburn football.
I am interested in seeing how watchable this offense is. I saw a bit of the Tulsa offense in their bowl game. It seemed that if you blinked, you missed a play.
To me, what offense it is isn't as important as execution. With this offense it looks like many players will be handling the ball, which says more chances for errors. It is part of why I think Ole Nutt didn't like it. If Malzahn can get these guys to execute, Ole Nutt will regret that decision.
Bringing my lunch pale to one day reach "ROF" status. I would have been on here more this week but laptop crashed b/c of a bet with friends to be the first to find the Erin Andrews video. For those of you keeping score at home I lost the bet and got a virus. On a old computer here just to get my Auburn football fix.
Bribing a reporter with beer? That is crazy enough to work!!!
Yeah I'm not talking Natty Light or Keystone either. We're talking Yeungling or something to maybe get a few off the record stories. Jay G you wouldn't have to worry b/c I wouldn't mic you- you know just keep it down home cuz.
I can be bribed with beer, but I am not a reporter. In fact I am not anything. What's your occupation IV? Nothing, I just do what my wife tells me all day without much compensation.
I am hearing that we will have another scrimmage this week. I don't think it was in the plans earlier. I am getting the impression that we aren't as far along as the Chiz would like.
IV -
"throw dirt in your face"? LOL... I dont know why thats funny to me, but it is.
Im Steven, btw. Its been a delight to read your stories and comments the last few days. I normally just lurk and laugh, but wanted to say hello. And I second whatever Monica's email said...
Zteven, don't just lurk. There is room for every opinion.
I am also pretty interested in how quickly Kodi got into the mix at receiver. With his build I can see him as a possession type receiver.
As for Benton starting, I kind of expected that based upon how old he is. I think the requirement to go to the NFL is being 21 and he is already there. We better play him while we got him.
As for Billings, it bothers me a lot. When in doubt, go with experience, and he is the most experienced receiver we have.
Steve FC
Be careful what you ask for. My Grandmother once told me I didnt have to share EVERY opinion I had. As I get older, I realize she was right most of the time.
Zteven...I am trying my best to stay away from the dirt in the face scene for now. Thanks for the nice words. If I have entertained you, I am happy. Just an old "geezer" having some fun with a bunch of good Auburn peeps. New Thread up.
