Days to kickoff: 13
Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:
13
HAPPY JAMES MCKINNEY DAY!!!
James McKinney was a two-time ALL-SEC Free Safety for the Auburn Tigers in the late '70s. James led the Tigers with 5 INTs in 1977 and again with 4 INTs in 1979.
James McKinney matriculated in Sulligent, Ala., where he played quarterback on a team which featured a more high profile player: James's cousin, Joe Cribbs. They both arrived in Auburn in the fall of 1976.
HONORABLE MENTION:
* Tim Hawthorne: Former Homewood High standout who signed with Auburn in 2006. Involved in a hellacious one-vehicle accident in early 2007 along I-85 that claimed one life. He emerged from the mess with only a concussion. He's been a reserve player so far.

IV - perhaps I was a bit harsh on your man, Bryant Harvard, all because of one measley little play in 1959.
Let it be known, #14 Bryant Harvard led Auburn in passing offense (493 or 494 yds) and total offense (720 yds) in 1960. All this while also playing full-time on the defensive side of the ball where he led the team with 6 INTs and a healthy 19 yd avg per INT return.
Grrrr.
THT 2.0... is the new and improved THT?
FSJ & Pamela Anderson: Lacking substance.
THT 2.0 is THT's daughter. THTJR. named her 2.0 when she was about 10 yrs old because she was/is so much like her mother.
THT..
Somebody may have asked this already...but do you have some sort of Auburn Encyclopedia handy at all times? You are a fountain of information.
I just thought I knew a lot ($1.00 to michaeleiea) about Alabama.
THT, was Antoine Nolan worthy of a honorable mention? I believe he was #13. He was quite the character and played twice as big as his actual size.
It's finally Antwoine Nolan day!! Everyones favorite snake loving, diminutive blonde hair DB who frequently got toasted.
FSJ - for info and stats, mostly the 2008 Auburn Football Media Guide and Google, along with an occasional personal recollection.
For jersey numbers, Google not much help. There I have relied on:
Personal recollection (riddled with data errors)
Hotties
Old Glomeratas in the AU Digital Library
AU Football Media Guide
Most of this stuff I'm learning for the 1st time, too. I had no idea James McKinney and Joe Cribbs were cousins.
The problem is, by this time next week, I'll once again probably have no idea they were cousins.
Yep, WERK, I was afraid to mention Antwoine. I was going to let someone braver than I bring him up.
And the Honorable Mention for Tim Hawthorne was JayGT's addition. Although I don't question the worthiness, I have purposely avoided any current roster players.
Honorable mention to Dominiko Anderson, a safety on the late 80's teams.
Also, former back up QB Josh Sullivan. Sullivan who also pitched and I believe played catcher and 1st base for the baseball team and was drafted by the Rockies.
Tate TVs: Fulham vs. Chelsea, live from Craven Cottage
Jay G, you catch Kyle Busch this weekend. He was a rookie's crappy driving from sweeping at the Bull Ring.
I’d appreciate any editing to make this sound better/kinder so I can send it to the Auburn Media folks. You can send any ideas to my @gmail.com which is CarolinaRareMaps . Thanks, Hotties.
I have enjoyed reviewing the 2009 Auburn Football Media Guide which arrived last week. The new format was a big surprise. As one who is always pushing my co-workers to embrace new ideas and technological advances, I understand the need for change.
However, I must state my disagreement with the changes to the Media Guide. I am aware that the Media Guide has long been used as a means of getting information to recruits about Auburn University. However, first and foremost, it should be a Media Guide. The new format is nothing more than an Auburn Football Photo Album, supplemented with information. A true Media Guide is packed with information, supplemented with photographs.
I believe we should be recruiting high school students who are proficient readers. I also believe our coaches can get academically and athletically talented students to choose Auburn without resorting to a Photo Album. I hope you will revert to the previous format next year. If you intend to keep the new format, please have the honesty to call it what it is: Auburn Football Photo Album for Illiterate Recruits.
THT, I fully agree with you. The media guide changes are awful...plus they jacked the price up as well.
Ouch, THT. That is pretty harsh. Seeing as I have not seen it, it might also be fair.
I saw the West Ham and Tottenham match this morning...not very exciting.
THT as someone who has never seen the media guide but knows its value, I would agree with your statement and, might I add, it was well stated.
Also, it seems Eric Smith is in more trouble than we originally thought. The OA news reports he will turn himself in on Monday for a Third-Degree assault charge.
Since I've choosen the last three years to just download it, print and bind it myself, I guess I can't complain about the price. I do agree with the content, though.
I hope Chiz kicks him off the team. UF now has a longer no-arrest streak than Auburn, and that's shameful.
afternoon hotties.
glad RK mentioned Josh Sullivan. i had remembered him as a #13 this morning but for the life of me couldn't remember his first name.
Beautiful goal for Chelsea. Truly a team sport.
I would hate to lose Smith. Malzahn described him as basically a do it all type of back. I think of him as kind of a Heath Evans type. He got praise after the first scrimmage and the coaches were high on him in the spring.
Team discipline has to come first though, so if he must be kicked off the team, so be it.

I've not seen the media guide.
it's available at Auburtigers.com, aero
Disorderly conduct isn't huge. It can mean a lot of things. 3rd degree assault means you can win up to a year in jail for what you did, which is a very big deal.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I reserve my judgment about Eric Smith.
And I hereby revoke the man-card of the 22 year old LOSER that went into the fight, ate the knuckle sandwich and then proceeded to get on the whambulance and pressed charges.
Aero - I've got an extra one. You want me to send it to you? Would you get it before the 2010 season?
We just have to trust Chiz on the decision with Smith. I don't care who the player is. It doesn't matter how good of a player you are. Something that would get the third string deep snapper kicked off the team should also get the first string tailback kicked off the team.
I subscribe to the advertiser sports feed. For some bizarre reason I had a story on "raslin" shop up in my RSS reader. It was actually an advertiser story. Come on!!! Don't put that crap in a sports feed!!!
The auburntigers.com website makes me throw up a little every time I get on it. I think Auburn Athletics has the worst website out of all D1A teams.
Why did they give the official website to CSTV guys? They can't even get the countdown to kickoff to work.
You see those little 'NaN days NaN hours ...' ? that NaN means Not A Number. It takes an extraordinary level of incompetence to be unable to program such a thing. it's been that way for more than a month.
Thank you so much for the offer, THT. I'll download the pdf version and print it here.
I did wake up on the wrong side of the bed today. I'm just .. angry for some odd reason. Hey it's better than being sad or depressed.
Ima hit the gym. Keep hate alive.
Josh Moon actually wrote a story on Tuberville and how unfair the criticism of him has been. Josh is the same guy who interviewed Franklin month or two back. Jay, is Josh moon stuck in some time warp or is he in charge of attempting to resuscitate dead stories? I can't wait for his next breaking headline: "Did Doug Barfield get a bad rap at Auburn"?
I know Josh and JayGT are good friends, and Josh may be a very fine individual, but I do not like what he writes.
Auburn fans now "hate" Tuberville. Which ones? Where? Quote just one who does.
I don't think Josh does any research at all unless its about the NCAA and ASU. I really liked him at one time but his routine is getting old. I can't wait until Doug and his show goes off the air here in the Gump. The 12-2 time slot here definately needs a change. Tired of listening to Caddyshack trivia and BG Markwell.
Ps. I miss your snakes Antwoine.
No, I don't find the way Tuberville has been treated reasonable, but we are about to begin a new season. What has happened has happened. Put that period behind us and look to the future.
ChizCo is working hard to put together a quality football team. They deserve the spotlight.
I find nothing beneficial in living in the past. Sure, you learn from mistakes, but I don't find stories like that beneficial. Auburn eating their own in a fashion similar to Bama bothered me, but lets move forward.
I don't recall anyone not respecting Tuberville and I don't know anyone who hates him.
Moon is stretching a lot in that article.
"Somehow, over the last nine months, fans have been ever so deftly led to believe that what happened last year wasn't simply one bad mistake, but a sign of much deeper issues."
I was saying there was a deeper issue when we were 11-2 in 2006. That didn't just come up in the last nine months.
I don't think Auburn fans hate Tuberville, either.
Most seem his for what he is: A pretty good coach who did a pretty good overall. Had some great moments. Had some awful moments.
You know how Bag operates.
For some reason Josh likes to shed a negative light on AU fans and it doesn't matter if its total fabrication or not, because hell write about it nonetheless.
I agree with Steve, why live in the past Josh??? Every Auburn fan I know sure isn't.
Thanks for making up BS again Moon. One day you'll grow a pair and actually be a reporter and respected journalist like Jay G.
I would say 95% of Auburn fans view Tommy at least as a good coach.
I would say 99% of the fans definately don't hate him. In fact, most everyone still likes the guy.
So Moon read a couple of posts here and a few on AL.com and that's how he polled the masses to get his article?
As far as Eric Smith goes -- and propers go to Gribbs, who did a fine job reporting the story -- I don't think this will affect his standing with Chizik.
We know Smith was brawling. We knew that already. The receiver of Smith's fist elected to press charges, which changes things from a legal perspective, but surely Chizik knew the score on Friday afternoon.
I still expect to see Eric Smith in an Auburn uniform at some point.
I know he's your friend Jay and I'm sorry if I was a little harsh regrding Josh :)
No offense to you Sir!
Bag doesn't like pooping on Auburn.
He just likes pooping on whatever issue strikes him. He's not a beat guy. Don't hold him to that standard. He's trying to get a rise out of you, if that makes sense.
I don't think Josh intends to malign, or sees the malice in his post.
He's just trying to come up with stuff that he thinks is interesting, or relevant.
We're buddies and all, sure, but it's not like I'm against you ripping him. He writes things I don't agree with. I understand your ire.
Alan, it's nice to have you back posting.
Where were you?
I guess he's not back, after all!
Just kidding. He probably has better manners than to take his laptop to the lunch table.
Thanks Jay, I still come here everyday and will do that until you move to Bristol, CT :)
Just haven't been posting as much lately until I realized that no man is bigger than one board when I felt the sting of my demotion. I'm gonna work my way back though.
Ps. You kept it real in the habotn hat photos. Straight Gump right there!
re: Media Guide
Thanks, SteveFC. I've taken the barb out of the last sentence.
I have read that Chizik won't confirm that Smith is still with the team. To me, that means he is still with the team. If he were not, Chiz would have said he is no longer with the team. It also means that Chiz is requiring him to pay for his mistake, which is understandable.
I take it to mean that Smith's position with the team is not yet certain. Smith is going through a learning experience and I hope he learns from it.
Kids don't realize that the fights you got in as kids will land you in jail for a long time as an adult. Being an adult means being held to a higher standard. I will let my lawyers handle my fighting. I am too old for such things.
What a day in our world ...
First of all I read two of the goofiest columns in the history of column writing.
Item 1: The Scarbinsky explanation of a fishing trip. Really? That's the explanation? I have considered Kevin thoughful, bright and professional. I can only surmise that he has a closed head wound and is serious need of medical attention.
Item 2: The Flaming "Bag" of Poo Column that insinuates all Auburn fans -- or at least "the average" one, to use his words -- thinks Tuberville is a bum. Is it possible and rational to think that Tommy did a good job for a period of time, but lost control of the program and a change was a reasonable thought? On the Dark Side of the Moon, apparently not. Broad brushes don't make room for reasonable thought.
Then, Sensi walks the aisle this morning and says he doesn't hate UAT anymore because we've got too many problems of our own. Brother Sensi, I can't hate 'em for you, and won't pretend to. But as for me, I'm sick of their sense of entitlement, and have been since about 1971 -- their useless arrogance, their half-truths, their legions of half-wit fans. I'll leave the coaching to Chiz and Crew. I'll handle the hate. Join me if you like, but if not, you're still my bro.
War Eagle, Love for the HOTTIES, and I hate UAT.
There's always room in my heart for hate, at least hate for UA-T. I was born with it, I was raised with it, I have instilled it in my children and my dog, and I married a woman filled with it. And I will surely die with it.
I still hate. I will continue to hate, no matter what. I said it before, I say it often, and I say it again now - KEEP HATE ALIVE!
In fairness to Eric Smith, we shouldn't really judge him based upon the information we have. Yea, being out at that hour was probably not the brightest idea, but he has not yet been convicted of anything.
The other thing that comes to mind is something that happens with high profile people, particularly athletes. Some people like to challenge them because they view them as snobs or something. This could be the case here. It may be that the guy Smith punched was drunk and decided to mouth off and express is maleness. We just need to let the courts decide here.
Smith is a bar fighting thug and needs to be banished to outer Mongolia, as far as I'm concerned.
There are times when a Grecko-Roman punch to the head is appropriate. You don't have the details, so don't presume to judge.
Here is the fine line that coaches walk every day: do you discipline to train the offender, or do you punish to serve as a deterrent the remainder of the team?
I believe the truthful answer is: it depends. It depends on the offense, and it depends what a team needs at a given time. It's no different than what happens in our courtrooms.
splitting hairs post:
If the intent is to punish, Inner Mongolia, a part of Communist China, would be more appropriate than the democracy of (Outer) Mongolia.
And no, I didn't know that off the top of my head. I was just prompted from the earlier post to google Outer vs Inner as it relates to Mongolia. And now I'm hoping I haven't prompted someone to do similar googling relative to the umbilicus.
Hoping that when the whole story comes out that Eric will be absolved of the crime. Staying out that late though was dumb and punishable in itself. Here's hoping you get a second chance to redeem yourself Mr Smith.
Mr. Moon.. there are only a few internet fans spewing this revisionist stuff. Yes..the supportive majority is silent once again and you and your little world has missed it. Even if your article were to be accurate...it is the wrong timing. It's obvious that your goal is to make some kind of Paul Finebaum wannabe statement just to get attention. Well you did....and as is the case most every day on your radio program....it is lame.
I had no clue that I hated Tubs. I'm glad Josh cleared it up for me though. I'd be lost without him thinking for me
Unless Eric Smith was wearing an "I'm Eric Smith of the Auburn Tigers, yes I really do play for Auburn ...yes I know you don't recognize my name, but I am a player" sign on his chest, I doubt he has the level of celebrity where someone would call him out in a bar and talk trash to him because he's a football player.
AS for hating Alabama, I got past that a long time ago. For a long time the Iron Bowl had almost become irrelevant. Bama was no longer one of our top opponents. LSU has been the best series we have had for a long time now and I favored playing them in our last game of the season.
I don't hate Bama because I understand them. They are what they are and unlikely to change. I don't hate a Bama fan for being and Bama fan any more than I would hate a squirrel for liking nuts. It is their nature.
Smith played in every game last season and was likely going to be our number two tailback. Being a tailback at Auburn is high profile and he is a big boy for a runningback. My guess is that he stands out in a crowd.
i hate squirrels.
Mr. Smith's incident didn't involve guns, drugs or alcohol. It was a fist fight and he punched a drunk guy. I say if the coach is convinced of contrition, give the kid a second chance. Our no tolerance world has reached the level of rediculous.
As stated above..revoke the whiner's man card.
I know that it was a different world back in the day, but David Langner and Terry Beasley each got in several fights while at AU.
I will not remove a bunch of trees just so I can have a squirrel-free platform feeder for the cardinals, doves, grosbeaks, and other non-perch feeder birds. Therefore, I hate the squirrels who prevent me from feeding those birds. I think UA-T sent them here, so that's just another in the long list of reasons I hate UA-T.
is the HABOTN football pick em contest just college or is it college and pro?
First off, there is nothing wrong or abnormal about a college student being out at 1:45 on a Thursday night especially the first week of school. He was obviously sober and had no drugs on him but he just got in a fight, so what, that happens every night in Auburn. And for what its worth, if he gets a good lawyer it should be easy to get a 3rd degree assault charged dropped or at the least get the charge lessened. Trust me, this is nothing to make a big deal of.
I spent many a night out @ 2 while at AU - though no camp.......Just classes the next day....
Kids will be kids..... Welcome to the internet world where bowel movements are reported within minutes.
LT
IV here. Just lurking today cause you guys are hot and kicking it. Enjoying reading what you have to say. I just had to jump in and say I started off liking to read Josh Moon's articles very much. Then something happened and I didn't like them so much starting about a year ago. Now I am like Jay in the fact that all of a sudden he was just trying to get a rise out of his readers. He is an antagonist and a contrarian that's for sure. Now I read his articles, very quickly realize what he is up to, it's so obvious, and then I move along saying you won't get a response out of me. Mr. Moon's problem is that the Advertiser Sports Editor needs to find some productive assignments for the bag man and you might be surprised, he may be better than we think. Just find something worthwhile for the guy to do.
Steve..probably b/c I grew up a Bammer, I tolerated and gave them the benefit of the doubt for too many years. One of my best AU buddies chided for years about that....as he should have.
When the Dubose, Francione, Price and Shula oddyssey started and Bama lost 6 in a row, my hate started ....primarily because of the reaction of their fans and the UAT admin. Their denial, backbiting, lashing out and blaming others was awful.
The GOT12? lie perpetrated by the UAT admin really chapped me.
The extremely low class responses by actual UAT graduates during 6 in a row chapped me. I was a Bammer during their win streak over AU and the AU fans handled that with much better class. Those AU fans stuck together and didn't engage in rampant negative specualation and eat their own.
I've only spent sporadic time in Al since graduating. My hate amplified, when I bought my lake place in north Alabama and because of my travels over there, I realized how many fools living in trailer parks that can't even find Tloser on a map..call themmselves Bama fans. Then, of copurse, the UATers brag about how large their fanship is based on having those fools as fans.
Those fool Bammers induce arrogance and some kind of twisted football birthright into their personalities just so they can fake having self-esteem.
Bammers are to me the most embarrassing aspect of my home state.
oops...forgot..May the hate be with you.
If he was my kid I would not be happy that he was jeopardizing his free education. I would hope that I had taught him that it would be foolish of him to think of himself as just another kid @ Auburn. That like it or not, part of the price for the free ride was outrageously hard work and seemingly unfair scrutiny.
That's just me.
Steve,
I know you keep saying he was going to be the # 2 RB, but I just don't see it.
Monica,
I concur.
Kids will be kids, I agree, but like Monica said, he's going to be held to a higher standard.
On a more hilarious topic, anyone see where Lou Holtz picked Florida vs Notre Dame in the BCS title game?
IV..those are good points about how to live with Bags. I however, don't think that the sports editor should have to babysit and find him something better to do. Bags is a grownup and needs to find better stuff to write or go away.
Alabama is one of the few states that someone like Finebaum could get away with what he does and prosper. Bags seems to be a PF wannabe. I say he should take notes from TBarnhart in Atl or Dooley in Orlando.
I wish you would open up and tell us how you REALY feel Hoopie.....
:-)
LT
RK ...
When is the van from the home coming to pick up Dr. Lou?
Josh Moon started co-hosting the Roundtable about a year and half ago. Coincidence?
Mon...as a parent, I agree. If this issue is only what it seems to be, I hope that the kid gets a second chance to not wreck his chance at a better life over a fist fight.
TBlackmon was underage drinking, got out of the car and ran from the law. That seems worse.
Hoop ...
My sense is one of the determine factors -- fair or not -- is the message that Chiz thinks the team needs to receive.
We'll see where it leads.
Lou is a clown. He has to remain a clown for ESPN to keep him around. One day ESPN will realize that their broadcasts would be much better without him.
ESPN keeps Lou, because he gives them access to ND that they never had before.
I hate that Lou is replacing Corso in Gameday.
I'm with you on PF surving in AL. There is not another state in the union where his format would work. AL vs. AU 24/7. Maybe a little TN and FLA mixed in for good measure. I lived in B'ham in the late 80's when he was at the Post(?). He was a good reporter and investigator in that time. A Poisen Pen repoter. Its when he became a " Editorial Columnist" I started to question hid objectivity.
LT
Since I don't watch much of GameDay, but do watch the evening games when I'm home, I think Lou belongs with Fowler and Herbstreit.
For eternity.
Actually, looking at the Gameday webpage, maybe they changed their mind.
I know last year they had announced that Holtz would be in Corso's chair, hopefully that's not happening now.
I watched Twilight last night. Can I keep my man-card, or will it also be revoked?
I love the Gameday guys.
I love the Gameday show as it is. Don't take it seriously and it's a fun show to watch.
People get upset at Corso, he's just there to play a role and I think he does it well.
The only one that bothers me is Fowler, he's just obnoxious, and I wish they would replace him with Reese Davis. Davis may be a Bama guy, but he is good at what he does.
Michael,
Your man card is officially under review.
Jet..as mentioned above. the coach will have to balance the message to the team the chances for the kid to succeed if allowed to return.
I can't imagine that this team needs more examples from the coach after the 3 guys got kicked off this summer.
I'm normally not very tolerant and certainly the kid shouldn't have been out that late, but the fact that there were no drugs or alcohol gives me the impression that this is not something so heinous that the kid should lose his chance to do better in life.
You should have your smart person card revoked at a minimum.
I like Lou Holtz a lot, going back to when he was NC State head coach and did his magic show at our H.S. sports banquet. But I must admit I prefer he not move up to the GameDay stage.
I hereby declare THT the most likely first to drop out of the HABOTN college football pick em contest.
When are we supposed to make our picks for the 1st week?
In my humble opinion there are three situations where you can watch a chick flick and retain your man-card.
1. With your woman, knowing that rewards immediately follow the movie.
2. As a last resort sleeping aid. You can't sleep and can't find the baseball bat to knock yourself out.
3. Practice to toughen yourself to face that torture in real life situation (forced to watch a chick flick) by terrorists, bad henchmen or frenchmen.
There can be more situations. Further elaboration is necessary regarding the chain of events where one put his man-card in such serious jeopardy.
Hoopie, I am with you on the fact that nobody should have to baby sit Moon. My statement concerning the Adv. S. E. was based on the assumption that the S. E. was his boss and gave out the assignments. Maybe my knowledge of how the print media works is weaker than I thought. I just believe that someone should be monitoring the bag man a little closer and see that he does more productive things than trying to rile people then laughing about it when he gets a rise out someone.
I watched the movie with my wife. I threatened to come surf the internet numerous times during the first hour. The, "Oh, I am so dark and complicated and disaffected" was intolerable.
But then the movie ended, and you know what? I was like, "I really didn't like that movie, but I am really interested in seeing the sequel so I can see what happens." Then after going over it again and again in my mind, I think I have come to the conclusion that I enjoyed the last 40 minutes or so of Twilight.
Thus my final recommendation is skip to like the 1:15 mark or something like that. The boyfriend is a vampire, the girlfriend is a human, and they are complicated in ways that high school girls might be interested in watching, and that is about all you need to know.
ha that was a great post, Michael
you do crack me up
Michael, you have a man card? I knew J-Z had applied for one on several occasions and had been rejected. I have been married so long, 41 wonderful years, she was looking over my shoulder but is gone now, darn visitors day here at the home, I had my man card revoked a long time ago.
I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE A VIDEO OF CHRIS TODD AND HIM THROWING OR SOMETHING... IF NOT, ANYONE KNOW OF ANY LINKS WITH HIGHLIGHT FOOTAGE OF CHRIS TODD LAST YEAR? PREFEREBLY THAT SHUFFLE PASS HE DID WHILE HE WAS FALLING IN THE SOUTHERN MISS GAME?
thus spake Steven
Not sure about Bag, haven't read him, but it wouldn't surprise me if he only chooses topics to get hits on his site and responses to his stories. I have a feeling there are MANY many people in the media biz that do it.
As far as mr. Smith, yaa gotta know better, son. Part of the game, and I imagine some of the more difficult parts of the game is understanding that there are folks outside trying to bust you down because of who you are. Not that this is what's going on, but you have to try your best to keep yourself out of situations that you needn't be a part of while you are representing your college.
Unless of course you go to school on the west side of the state where if you can play ball you can pretty much do whateverinthehell you'd like.
Always like to keep my audience riveted
I am totally riveted. You're almost as riveting as a movie about emo vampires.
I've spent the afternoon watching the Solheim Cup, the women's version of the Ryder Cup.
Put almost anything in the flag and I can get interested.
I said it few weeks ago watching the Women's British Open. My new favorite golfer is Christina Kim. She has fun. And golf needs fun.
MytommyD ...
Jet don't know. Jet only pawn in game of life.
Michael, I too got the pleasure of watching the vampire flick. With the wifey. It was okay. The final 40 was much better than the first however long it was. But then again I'm no teen nor am I filled with all the drama and angst like those kids.
I was looking for a video of Chris Todd, but ran across a pretty cool video of about Brandon Cox and the issues he had to deal with. It is ironic that I think of him as one of the tougher QBs we have had at Auburn. He really go the crap beat out of him in 2007.
Why is Steven yelling at me?
As for Bag, from the description it sounds like he is a Finebaum.
Wasn't part of the problem for Brandon in 07 that he was still recovering from the 06 pummelings?
SHUFFLE PASS????
"Shuffle pass" is a common mistake, rk. Kind of like when people say, "Remember Boise State's awesome Statue of Puberty play!"
Re: JGT's articles in the paper about doing the situational work and picking up the tempo, has anyone heard whether or not the offense is getting close to the "ludicrous" speed that Coach Malzahn wants?
The more I think about it, Sober football player vs drunk frat boy = unfair fight. He should've walked away. Punishment should include both a trip to the show "Bully Beatdown" and a trek across Inner and Outer Mongolia. If he makes it back with eligibility remaining, reinstate him to the team.
Cox must have taken more of a beating than I thought to be still recovering 9 months after the season ended.
That kid was tough, no doubt. However he wasn't the same QB once we Kenny Irons was a little lame in 06 and then in 07 when we didn't have a solid consistent running game or WR's that could get any separation.
With a good running game, he was a pretty good game manager.
I know this has been a Smitty discussion but have yous guys seent the Juilio Jones/Mark Ingram story in the BammerHam News?
Gold Jerry, Gold I tell ya!
anybody seen or can provide a link to a projected depth chart pretty please?
Yeah, it's perfectly normal for two 18-19 year old black kids from the other end of the state to be friends with a cripled 55 year old white guy who doesn't watch football. Either Julio and Ingram are on the DL, or Bammerham News thinks we're all stupid.
boknowsbo, check out This site for a projected two deep on the defensive front. I don't think anyone's been brave enough to try and tackle that confusing mess (in a good way) that is Gus's offense.
That's pretty funny, a lot of coincidences as to how they became friends I'm sure...however I don't see it as a big deal.
My mancard is secure....Mrs. Hoopie and I went to see "Inglorious Basterds" last night. Her lady card is also intact, she properly hid her eyes during the minor gore scenes.
This is a good movie and like none I've ever seen.
ha, I hear that, big snacks! thanks for the link.
link took me back to HABOTN home page
Offensively, I think we have a pretty good idea who will play. The offensive line is pretty set in terms of starters. Depth there is uncertain. In terms of the receivers, we don't know who will start, but it is pretty certain who will play.
That is because Jay blogged about the depth chart on defense.
Here is a link to Jay's guess at a defensive depth chart.
watching my dog with a pretty much empty 8 ounce peanut butter jar is pretty funny. I don't think I need to worry about what she's doing for a few hours.
In case anyone was wondering, Steve is a nicer guy than I. I consider that a character flaw (in him, not me).
in the spirit of hate, here are some more things bammers deserve: burnt toast, mole crickets, grease stains, fish not biting, rosie o'donnell, stubbing their pinky toe, wet dog smell, chipping their only tooth, splinters, overcooked pasta, the wrong prescription, back hair, falling up the stairs, root canals, seeing their ugly reflection in the mirror, "touchdown auburn!", getting shanked in prison, an ES fist to the head, man-perms, losing their wallet, locking their keys in the yugo, customer service from india, flooded basements, scratched glasses, service charges, undercooked chicken, chinese shrimp, denied facebook friend request, getting poked in the eye, paper jams, parallel parking, broken bicycle chains, government run healthcare, windows 98/me, carpet burn and finally sensi's hate.
come back to the light!
thanks for that chip chip!! I think that sums up most of it.
Musings of a Senior citizen and long time Auburn fan.
As we approach a new season the players and fans need to take a deep breath and not dwell on winning every game but take them a game at a time. Don’t expect lofty finishes, for an early failure in that frame of mind can destroy a season. If we win the first game, as most expect, just look to the next game and so on for this season. If we lose one as surely we will, take heart and press on keeping your heads up high and take the next game in stride. I feel we have descent players and a really good coaching staff and if we make progress this year then we have something to build on for next year and the coming years,
War Eagle and have a great day, football season is almost here.

Don't let hate get stale, keep hate fresh.
Amen Digger. That is exactly what I think about this upcomming year and hope others do as well.
As for Sensi- Just wait to you get another 36-0, then the hate will burn strong again.
I still hate Bama and I'm still leading the Rollison Express down the fast lane!
Sensi = hate vacillator
I think Eddie made a good point the other day about not getting too overly optimistic.
I also view the first game as the most important of the season. That game is one we must win. If not, the heat will grow on Chizik quickly.
As for the games that will determine the success of the season, UT and Arkansas are the games I will be looking at.

IB games that I wished I had seen but did not:
1949- AU 14, UAT 13. This was the second year after the series had been revived and actually was not known as the IB until years later when Coach Jordan gave it that distinction. Bammer had busted our butts the year before in the worst beatdown of the series, 55 to 0. That is why many wanted Coach Jordan to run the score up on them in 1957. The halftime score in 1957 34 to zip. Final score AU 40, UAT 0. Coach Jordan would not do it and played everyone in the second half. The Tiders thought that they were going to give us another beatdown in 1949, saying it was a cinch. Travis Tidwell had something to say about it that day.
1972 - Au 17, UAT 16. The "amazins" and they truly were. Two blocked punts and a field goal saved the day but defense was what really won that game. You talk about an abbreviated play book on offense. What they did that year is a story for the books. I think it would even make a great movie.
There are others IBs I wished that I had witnessed , but Lord I wished I had been there in person for those two games.
I hate Bammer, Fishing and herniated disks.
I tee tee on their milkshake!
And I'm having a hard time #13.
Rodney Crayton?
Are you going to the Iron Bowl this year, IV?
A concern I have. What if, and yes its a huge if, we destroy La Tech. Does that tell us more about us or them? I mean truthfully we're "supposed" to wallop them. And if the reverse is true (although I can't imagine we'll be walloped), does that account for our injuries, new offense, lack of depth?
Trying to remain cautiously optimistic
Hold the phone. No need to watch football this year. I found a video that lets us know exacly what is going to happen in 2009.
My Tommy you are just looking for stuff to worry about!
If we beat Louisiana Tech by about 3 scores, we will be about where I expect. Four or more scores and I would get excited.
I'll be at the IB.
And here is a good guessing game. You see a video on youTube of someone predicitng the SEC this season. The person predicts Auburn last in the west and Tennessee last in the east. What school is the guy a fan of?
hmmmmmmmmmm. not sure Steve. Perhaps there's a clue in the video.
Monica ..... you're right.
I was at the 1957 game and was happy to see us manhandle the Tahd, but there were many around me as we walked to our cars that were mad has hell because Shug called off the dogs.
Monica, no I want be able to get a pass from the home. Just kidding. I have not been a regular at games for some time now. I very much would like to go to homecoming this year. I know that we usually don't have a very worthy opponent for homecoming, but I just love the atmosphere. Back in the day before JH was enclosed in either end zone, they would not turn anyone away at homecoming. Of course, it was always a sell out but you could get in and sit on either of two banks in the north end zone. Coach Jordan said all of the old grads should be able see the homecoming game. The last game that I actually went to in Auburn was two years ago when we played Tulane at homecoming. That was my most remembered trip back to Auburn; however, that is another story for later.
Chris - I am frequently mistaken, so take my guess that Rodney Crayton wore #10 with a grain of salt.
Digger - You plan on making any games this year?
IV - You're such a story tease! Also, I hope you get to go to Homecoming this year if you want to.
I would like to get to a game this season, but I now have a 103# puppy to take care of and I haven't travelled well in years. More than likely, I will just be glued to the tube.
Digger, I talked about it earlier but I hope you did not get as cold as I did that day in '57. I just about froze to death and I am generally a cold natured person. That was the coldest I have ever been at a football game.
Sometimes I wonder how they named the field "Pat Dye Field" in JHS?
Is there any other single field stadium with a separate name for the field?
I would have loved to have been at that 1957 game. I still feel blessed to have been at the 2004 UGA game and had an ideal view of the hit.
boknowsbo ... I posted a projected defensive depth chart maybe two days ago.
Yes, there are other teams with separate field names. I think it was Florida State who named their field a year or two before we did.
Tennessee at one time, and maybe still is, Shield-Watkins field at Neyland Stadium. I also think that Florida has that arrangement. I am sure that there are others.
Wow. SteveFC for the quick reply. You are brimming with knowledge, Steve.
Doak Campbell Stadium - Bobby Bowden Field.
I find it a tad cheesy. Just make an indoor practice facility or something, and name it after the dude instead.
Aero - I thought it a bit peculiar, also. Next thing you know, Tubs has us 13-0 and I'm wondering, what on earth are they going to name after him? I'm not so worried about that anymore.
Just finished dinner...and I'm more useless than normal. I made eggs benedict j-z style. Take out the canadian bacon, insert thick cut bacon and crawfish tails and throw an egg on top and smother it in hollandaise sauce.
It actually hurts to type this right now.
I was starving. Now, not so much.
Monica: Yes I am going to homecoming (Furman)
IV: I believe that was the game we all like to shook to death. Walking fast to get to some warmth probably kept me out of trouble
Isn't Grant field also Boby Dodd Stadium.
Auburn's baseball field has a similar naming arrangement.
I don't know how to take Florida's. It's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field (as opposed to Pat Dye Field at JHS).
JayGT - those 1,690 hits from NC lately... not me.
Does any one here remember Shug Jordan's inovation back before free substitution. 1953 I think, he came up with two complete separate teams "X" lead by QB Vince Dooley and "Y" lead by QB Bobby Freeman. They alternated as needed but both QB's had to play on Defense and were DB's has well as I remember.
PS
They may have been safeties. Back then Safeties did not support the running came so much and could hide out in the tall grass 30 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
Digger, you win the cigar. You are 100% correct about the stinging insects stadium and field names in Atlanta.
I think it may have been after or because of an end of free substitution. I think the weird substitution restrictions were from the early 50s to the 60s. Most peculiar rule. I mean, this ain't futbol.
safeties "hiding in the tall grass"
That's hilarious, digger. And probably not too far from the truth back in those days!
Bobby Freeman did not mind hitting someone but Vince would fake a hamstring pull if a huge back got free.
Oromashadu making a very nice play and gets an Auburn shout-out. Nice.
We are blessed to have Digger and IV amongst us.
What you watching ehyou?
1954 sports illustrated article about platoon football and rule change
seems like waaaay back they had substitution restrictions, subsequently lifted, then resumed in 1952, and again lifted in the '60s
I saw a little Oromashadu in a rebroadcast of the 2003 Ole Miss game. I think that was on Friday night.
Yes, Digger you win again about the X and Y teams at Auburn. You have a wonderful memory. I loved what Paul Dietzle sp. did at L. S. who. You could substitute for and return your starters once per quarter during the one platoon days. Dietzle had a White Team, the starters, The Gold Team, a team of offensive specialist and the Chinese Bandits, a special defensive team. They would substitute each quarter one time as the situation called for it.
I know they had it from 1952 thru 1960
Yes I remember LSU especially the chinese bandits they were damn good.
Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field (State)
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field
Neyland Stadium/Shields-Watkins Field
gosh, you old geezers have turned this into the most Historic Auburn Blog on The Net.
I like reading it, though. :-)
Digger, As I remember, Dietzle named the Chinese Bandits after the characters in the comic strip "Terry And The Pirates". He said that the Chinese Bandits in that comic strip were the meanest folks on earth.
LSU won the national championship in 1958 we wound up 4th with a
9-0-1 season.
IV you are right he sure did.
Guess who tied us 7-7 and may have kept us out of a spilt for champs
one and only North Ave Insects.
Yeah and you had better take advantage of us old f@rts and our memories. We aren't gonna be here forever. But we have accomplished something that you don't know that you are going to do, we have become old geezers. That was cruel, I am sorry Lord and take care of the pygmies in wherever it is that Larry the Cable Guy says. I never understand when he says that, he mumbles.
You tell him, IV!! LOL
got to go get something to eat us old geezers got to keep up our strength
IV and Digger ...
The stories you tell take me back to when my dad was still with me. He was API, Class of '49.
I think the younger HOTTIES are lapping up from the bowl of your memories the same way I did with Dad.
From this middle-ager, moving in quickly on 50 ... thanks.
HA.
Digger, do you remember what we did to Tennessee in 1958? You talk about defense. No first downs and a total of negative 10 yards of offense for the entire game. They were still running the single wing then but not much longer after that. The score of the 1958 game was either 10 to 0 or 13 to 0, I'm not sure.
Make it flip, Daddy
Totally agree, Jet.
PF just this once couldn't you not be a jerk and stop calling these guys "old geezers"?
