Depth chart guess: Defense
Auburn hasn't released a depth chart and probably won't until the first game, but I'm not above guessing.
So here goes.
SDE: Mike Goggans, (Hot Carter), Dee Ford
DT: Mike Blanc, Zach Clayton, Derrick Lykes
DT: Jake Ricks, Nick Fairley
WDE: Antonio Coleman, Nosa Eguae, Zach Clayton/Cam Henderson
SLB: Craig Stevens, Jonathan Evans, Ashton Richardson
MLB: Joshua Bynes, Harris Gaston, Wade Christopher
WLB: (Eltoro Freeman), (Spencer Pybus), Jonathan Evans, Ashton Richardson
CB: Neiko Thorpe, Demond Washington
CB: Walt McFadden, Harry Adams
FS: (Mike McNeil), Daren Bates/Mike Slade, T'Sharvan Bell
SS: Zac Etheridge, Drew Cole/Slade, (D'Antoine Hood)
*Of note: I can't get a feel for what's going to happen at that second DT spot. Fairley has been playing pretty well. I'll stick with Blanc for now.

NO DROPS!
Matt, I'll restore your position on the HoF. I know you by your avatar moreso than your handle.
Apologies.
you mean AU has enough D players for a two deep?
As you can see ... not really.
yeah, you probably had to go to the media guide for a few of those names huh...
Jay I heard again on the radio and read somewhere that Sullen is looking like a solid back-up. I'm glad he lost alot of the weight but it's hard to believe. He had a great interview on the radio though. Sounds like a very bright guy.
As far as the D goes, what are they saying about Evans? Can he really hold down the #2 spot behind Stevens??
Thanks for working so late Jay. And thanks to THT for your selection of Kent and Zofko - two truly great AU players.
And a good evening to all.
I've been paying pretty close attention to defense.
Offense? I'm not sure how I'd even build that depth chart. They have all kinds of positions based on each formation. It's a mess.
apparently adam herring is an afterthought?
BigCat, you know I was down on Sullen when he signed.
He has lost A LOT of weight and his body looks A LOT better. I rescind my earlier comments about him.
I'm not sure Adam Herring is going to play again. I hear nothing at all about him. Nothing.
That is one scary-looking lack-of-depth chart. Are the players listed in parentheses questionable due to injury?
just give us the two deep for the OL. we understand the dilemma you are in trying to peg the spot everyone else will be playing.
I was planning on going to bed, but that depth chart will keep me awake all night. We need some good karma up in here.
I think Evans is going to have to hold down a spot, though he'll be on the weak side for now.
I think Ted Roof is working those guys all over the place. He needs maximum flexibility these days.
the mess in my office is an afterthought. I guess it's time I start cleanup. See y'all tomorrow.
JayGT - thanks again for your great work!!! Please drive safely. Keep the music real loud.
chipper ... offensive two-deep will have to wait. It's late and I'll have to go through my notes.
Jay... on Herring do you mean not going to play again as in career change?
Thanks for the chart. Nice to see the players broken down by position.
The broken down position is called Muscle Beach
THT, any chance of getting your countdown pulled together into one document once we get to the season? I've learned a lot from your musings, and I'd love to have that as a reference.
from the sound of chiz's interview yesterday it doesn't sound like he has ruled out the possibility of using a 4-2-5 if needed.
we have a lot of depth at that position
i know. after all you're just superman jgt. not tim tebow.
j-z - all I got is the list of names. I haven't saved any of the crap I've typed and/or stolen.
Basic OL look:
RT -- McCain, AJ Greene, (Aubrey Phillips)
RG -- (Byron Isom), Jorell Bostrom, Andre Harris
C -- Ryan Pugh, Bart Eddins
LG -- Big Snacks Berry, John Sullen, Jared Cooper
LT -- Lee Ziemba, Vance Smith
BigCat ... career.
I hear nothing about Herring.
maybe you are tim tebow.
THT, broken down was probably a poor choice of words at this point and time. I'll try to do better.
Sullen had been playing exclusively at LG until Isom got hurt. Then Jeff Grimes moved Sullen to the other side to fill that hole.
I thought Jared Cooper would have gotten a shot there instead.
depressed - i loved it; so apropos
whoa.....guess I'm late to the reading tonight. Seems like I'm going to have to quit lurking and start commenting so I don't lose my feeling for the heat!
thanks for staying up with us jay!
Isnt Jorell Bostrom the walk-on that hasn't played in like 3 years? These guys must really be busting their tails in the weight room and at practice.
Are they working that hard, or are we that desperate? I hope it's the former.
I think Bostrom played in juco last year. He may not have played for several years after H.S. He's old as dirt. I'm just guessing.
Peeps, this Auburn team is mighty thin in a lot of places.
Get used to it. This is how it's going to be for a while.
I'm now out for the night.
See you in the morning.
nite, nite jay....be careful driving back!
Drive careful Jay!
anyone know what tub's record was when the opposition scored over 30+? i know his record when AU scored 30+ was stupid good. at least we may have an OC that can keep us in a shootout if the O comes together like we hope.
nite tim. be safe on I85. thanks for the late nighter for our AU consumption needs.
I guess I'm still am leary of what is to come. Maybe I'll get excited after the first game. I went to AU during the Barfield years so I have to warm up to the idea
Woo! I got tickets for west virginia! And now I am once again sad for being dropped off the list.
I think we're all nervous about what's to come this year. The last few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster. We've seen flashes of brilliance from young men, selfless acts from a QB in the competition to start, and lows in the form of injuries and players being removed from the team.
All of these things will define the character of this team. It is my belief that this team will play with a fire in their belly the likes of which we haven't seen since Jason, Ronnie, and Caddy.
I don't think we have the depth or the talent in many positions to go all the way, but we'll fight to the last man. I fully expect this to be a team that we can all be proud to call our own. And at the end of the day, isn't that what we all want? I want a team that shows the passion on the field that I feel in my heart for Auburn.
here is a late night nugget for the insomniacs.
tub's record when the opposition scored 30+. (3-15)
yuk!
the three wins came against LA tech (48-41 OT), syracuse (37-34 OT) & UGA (31-30).
his teams never had the ability to get in a shootout much less win it.
that is going to have to change this year to get to the 8-9 win territory.
Damn...I need to stop posting this close to midnight.
Hopefully the offense won't be so inept this year and will be able to keep the D on the sideline taking it easy. I am VERY excited to watch CGM scheme towards our talent and incorporate a downfield attack with the young receivers we've had come in. I think we can look for the D to play more nickel than normal to compensate for the lb attrition.
I'm jacked to watch our DL work this year under CTR. There are many things that will factor into the season and some of them can work to help our attrition. The DL play will be crucial to keeping pressure off the LB position.
I will be happy just to see strides being made, which i think will happen. That's my after midnight stream of consciousness sunshine pumper post.
Thanks for the depth chart, Jay. It is nice to see names in sports, although way too many of them are new or haven't seen a lot of playing time. I feel pretty good about most positions, but the linebackers are an obvious problem. When you talk substitutions, you see a lot at linebacker.
The hope here is that we substitute very liberally early in games during the first third of the season. Hopefully with doing that we will avoid some injuries to the more experienced players and bring some young pups along.
My biggest concern is that players tend to get injured at two points, either early before they have worked up a sweat, or after they are tired. The tired part scares me with this amount of depth.
And kudos to Jay for standing up to the man (Nick Saban) and hypothesizing on a depth chart. Fight the power!!!
Good morning, Hotties!!! We made it! Where the heck is Tar Heel?? What day is it??
I found out whose day it is on the previous thread. Thanks, Tar Heel!
Luv - after going to bed at 1 a.m without getting much done, I've now been up for an hour without getting much done. I've got almost an hour before I head to work. I think I'll take all the junk in my office and pile it in the back of my minivan. Then I can dust and vacuum when I get home and after MrsTHT's party tomorrow (which I'll miss while doing the double-shift) I can sort through the crap and see what needs filing and what needs tossing.
btw, it's MAILON KENT DAY - see prior thread.
oops, you're too fast for me, Luv.
Have a great Friday!!! I've got to put the blog crack away now.
Happy Frank McIntosh day. McIntosh was a back up for Reggie Slack and one of three QB's to be considered to be his replacement along with Stan White and Corey Lewis.
And Eddie, just for you, from the Bowden era, honorable mention to Clifton Robinson, a small WR, with some off field issues and eventually turned by Tub into a RB when we had no RB's.
Ahh...Frank McIntosh day. He's a government bureaucrat extraordinare these days.
WERK...
McIntosh and my dad were co-workers and I worked there over summers. He is a super cool dude.
Working for the Corps = Substantially lowered cool factor
Yikes, Tar Heel! You have a lot to do! It makes me anxious just thinking about it!
I like my pizza thin and crispy. I might as well like my football team that way, too.
I just remembered that we bought Frank's house from him when we moved to Lowndesboro. I wonder what else I've forgotten?
If I'm not mistaken in an hour Jay G will be on the radio in Mississippi for some Hatin' w/Jay G.
j-z...
Are you sayin' the Corps ain't cool?
Ok. This Troy vs. Auburn debate is good for May-July, but can we please drop it now. For whatever reason, it isn't going to happen under the Jay Jacobs regime. Therefore, the point is as moot as telling Jessie's girl how you feel about her.
Never realized how long it takes to read through 613 notes. Y'all were busy yesterday.
~My and/or Mr tommyd
RK- See previous thread about Clifton Robinson. He gets no honorable mention from me, and it's not even because of his off the field issues.
I think I missed something in Sensi's note
Sensi must be listening to the nattering nabobs of nincompoopism that beat the same drum out of rhythm and with little hope for improvement.
Eddie,
I looked for your comment, but couldn't see it.
Let's just say Clifton is a divider not a uniter. Email me and I'll share info.
Will do.
Clifton was a mathematics major ... He was excellent @ division, which multiplied problems. He was also proficient @ subtraction from you and addition to him.
Thank ya W
J-Z..nice inspirational post at 11:56 pm last evening.
Jet...I like the new flaky-type pizza crust. The good news....this coaching staff ain't flaky.
Thin crust meat lovers from Pizza Hut is the best.
@ the hospital with Mrs. Jet, who's having a minor procedure. I stepped out for a cup of coffee, and I saw, in the wild, the species known as Cousinhumperus Bamaearnhardticus. He was sporting a mullet, a black leather studded belt with a Rebel flag buckle and was leaning against his mode of transportation, which was a well-worn truck with a houndstooth hat magnet adorning the door. Sadly, the camera on my phone is in operable.
Benny Tudino's - Hoboken NJ. HUUUUGE slices, great thin pizza.
Not much better than a good Pizza Hut...not much worse than a bad one.
Prime specimen, huh, Jet?
That particular species is really thriving in the current climate. They were on the endangered list 5 years ago.
Pure-bred in-bred, Luv.
So to speak.
So is Hatin' w/Jay G. on a hiatus again?
This Memphis writer is going after Coach Calipari....
Calkins
Mailon Kent is a great choice for the day, but I don't have anything in the way of personal memories about him; I was too young. My HS was so small that we didn't play football, there wasn't many games on tv, and I was hyperactive and would probably have been on Ritalin if they had it back then. So I just wasn't interested.
First real memory of an AU football game was TN game in 1965. I was floating the Cahaba River on a bass fishing trip with my dad, and at 1:15 that afternoon he pulled out the a.m. radio and gave me the job of keeping it turned so that we could hear Buddy Rutledge and Charlie Davis call the game. AU had 5 or 6 turnovers, and tried a long field goal on the last play that was short, and the game ended 13-13.
I was hooked on AU football and never missed listening to the games after that day. Got to see them play on live tv a few weeks later and they beat Spurrier and FL 28-17. Of course, there was always the replay on Sunday afternoon that I never missed. It was an hour long and they showed every play. Those were the days.
Crickey Jet, don't get too close, I heard they are very I'll tempered, and subject to yell "12!!" and "36-0" at people wearing interlocking AU
What's funny is that people didn't expect this from Calipari. Hasn't this happened to him before?!?!
Mrtommy- They just randomly yell at everyone wearing under armour gear?
That's harsh.
LOL, mrtommyd!!!
"You are so right Carl". Back in the day, Carl Stephens and my dad both flew radio controlled model airplanes.
Speaking of watching replays, I miss the days of Keith Jackson doing the college replay on Sunday mornings/afternoon. LOVED watching that with Dad and checking off how we did on "our scores".
That's why they're despised Eddie.
Uh oh, Jay. Do you think Nick Saban is going to show up and chew you out for guessing at a depth chart? I think he is taking his position as SEC Unofficial Depth Chart Police very seriously.
I was thinking the same thing Michael.
Saban would be all over this blog if Jay G was covering Bama football.
and the Lindsey Nelson Notre Dame replay was also great to watch.
I do miss Keith Jackson. Even further back, I miss Bud Wilkinson and his little magnet board.
Coosa - I'm jealous. The only time we heard AU game on radio was the weekend in the late '60s we drove to the top of Grandfather Mtn and picked up the UT broadcast. Coincidence we decided to make a weekend vacation to the mtns when AU was playing UT? Probably not, but I was too young then to realize how smart my dad was.
Of course, we never got to watch Shug & Carl. Forty years and 1,690 cable channels later, we still don't get the Auburn show :-(
I miss Keith Jackson...John Forney, Doug Layton, John Ward, & Jim Fyffe. Heck I even miss Snake...he was the first "official" person to criticize Shula in public during the 06 UT game when he inadvertently said "what the hell is he doing" on air when Shula decided to kick a field goal from the one foot line.
I will not miss Eli Gold, Bob Kesling, or Rob Bramblett
Ehyou,
Regarding your 7:11 am post, let's just say the bureaucracy is rather stifling. I knew Frank from Camden. Never thought of him as fitting into that role, but he's good at his job.
I loved Jim Fyffe, and he's my favorite broadcaster ever, but second to him in my eyes is Larry Munson.
Munson was a lot of fun and UGA broadcasts aren't the same without him.
Faker, are they going somewhere or are you just wishing they would?
Good morning hotties, I see everyone was busy yesterday?
This may be taboo to say on this blog but I sure hope Virginia Tech puts a beatdown on the tide for their third straight loss. I am getting sick of listening to these bama fans bragging!!
I'm with you RK. Munson made listening to games a lot of fun. He and Fyffe will always be my favorites.
Think Trooper Taylor could coach and do the play by play?
paulmain, why would that be taboo?
unless they score on special teams, I'm guessing VTech won't exactly light up the scoreboard
paulmain...
We have no reservations about wishing Bama the worst around here.
paulmain - if you ever change your avatar, I think I would just cry.
ehyou, while wishing FSJ the best ;-)
My boss is an ex bama player. which makes my place of employement difficult to deal with while the bama nation is so full of itself!!
So to protest i am going to act like I am working and not do anything today until i can sneak out and go play golf!!
THT...
Believe me, the mental image that comes to mind when I think "Bama" has nothing whatsoever to do with FSJ.
Mr. G.W. Jet,
Good luck to Mrs. Jet on her procedure. Take good care of her and watch your backside when around that species of cousin humppers.
New thread UP.
in previous thread:
"§teveFC (AIC) said...
The thing with a QB is that you don't want to burn a redshirt for playing time that isn't productive."
Agree, but if he's going to be the man next year I'd prefer to get him some playing time running real plays when it's not "crucial"
instead of next year trotting him out there raw on the first snap.
Redshirts are for teams with depth and parking future QBs behind starting QBs that are underclassmen. If the position is going to be open, your candidate for next year needs experience.
My opinion. WE.
THT - Sorry for your deprived childhood. ;)
When I was about 14, my dad had a job offer in OK and we had a family meeting to discuss it. I don't think he really wanted to go, but he wanted to see how we felt about it. I said that I would run away from home and live in the woods. No way I would go to a place where I couldn't follow AU football.
I think I got a whipping for my answer, but we didn't go to OK.
J-Z, gonna be at the bowl tonight? I am going to Autuga Academy's game. A couple of former neighbor's sons play for the Academy this year, ex-Lions. I think at this point, the Lions progression toward 4 will depend on how fast our inexperienced defense plays early on. Sound familiar?
Jay, just for fun, take a stab at Bama's depth chart, then someone shoot Sabear a link. He'll burst a blood vessel at the presser this afternoon.
Last again.
