Depth chart guess: Defense

Auburn hasn't released a depth chart and probably won't until the first game, but I'm not above guessing.

So here goes.

SDE: Mike Goggans, (Hot Carter), Dee Ford
DT: Mike Blanc, Zach Clayton, Derrick Lykes
DT: Jake Ricks, Nick Fairley
WDE: Antonio Coleman, Nosa Eguae, Zach Clayton/Cam Henderson
SLB: Craig Stevens, Jonathan Evans, Ashton Richardson
MLB: Joshua Bynes, Harris Gaston, Wade Christopher
WLB: (Eltoro Freeman), (Spencer Pybus), Jonathan Evans, Ashton Richardson
CB: Neiko Thorpe, Demond Washington
CB: Walt McFadden, Harry Adams
FS: (Mike McNeil), Daren Bates/Mike Slade, T'Sharvan Bell
SS: Zac Etheridge, Drew Cole/Slade, (D'Antoine Hood)

*Of note: I can't get a feel for what's going to happen at that second DT spot. Fairley has been playing pretty well. I'll stick with Blanc for now.

Jay I heard again on the radio and read somewhere that Sullen is looking like a solid back-up. I'm glad he lost alot of the weight but it's hard to believe. He had a great interview on the radio though. Sounds like a very bright guy.

As far as the D goes, what are they saying about Evans? Can he really hold down the #2 spot behind Stevens??

Thanks for working so late Jay. And thanks to THT for your selection of Kent and Zofko - two truly great AU players.

And a good evening to all.

I've been paying pretty close attention to defense.

Offense? I'm not sure how I'd even build that depth chart. They have all kinds of positions based on each formation. It's a mess.

BigCat, you know I was down on Sullen when he signed.

He has lost A LOT of weight and his body looks A LOT better. I rescind my earlier comments about him.

I'm not sure Adam Herring is going to play again. I hear nothing at all about him. Nothing.

That is one scary-looking lack-of-depth chart. Are the players listed in parentheses questionable due to injury?

just give us the two deep for the OL. we understand the dilemma you are in trying to peg the spot everyone else will be playing.

I think Evans is going to have to hold down a spot, though he'll be on the weak side for now.

I think Ted Roof is working those guys all over the place. He needs maximum flexibility these days.

I think we're all nervous about what's to come this year. The last few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster. We've seen flashes of brilliance from young men, selfless acts from a QB in the competition to start, and lows in the form of injuries and players being removed from the team.

All of these things will define the character of this team. It is my belief that this team will play with a fire in their belly the likes of which we haven't seen since Jason, Ronnie, and Caddy.

I don't think we have the depth or the talent in many positions to go all the way, but we'll fight to the last man. I fully expect this to be a team that we can all be proud to call our own. And at the end of the day, isn't that what we all want? I want a team that shows the passion on the field that I feel in my heart for Auburn.

11:56 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

here is a late night nugget for the insomniacs.

tub's record when the opposition scored 30+. (3-15)

yuk!

the three wins came against LA tech (48-41 OT), syracuse (37-34 OT) & UGA (31-30).

his teams never had the ability to get in a shootout much less win it.

that is going to have to change this year to get to the 8-9 win territory.

Hopefully the offense won't be so inept this year and will be able to keep the D on the sideline taking it easy. I am VERY excited to watch CGM scheme towards our talent and incorporate a downfield attack with the young receivers we've had come in. I think we can look for the D to play more nickel than normal to compensate for the lb attrition.
I'm jacked to watch our DL work this year under CTR. There are many things that will factor into the season and some of them can work to help our attrition. The DL play will be crucial to keeping pressure off the LB position.
I will be happy just to see strides being made, which i think will happen. That's my after midnight stream of consciousness sunshine pumper post.

Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks for the depth chart, Jay. It is nice to see names in sports, although way too many of them are new or haven't seen a lot of playing time. I feel pretty good about most positions, but the linebackers are an obvious problem. When you talk substitutions, you see a lot at linebacker.

The hope here is that we substitute very liberally early in games during the first third of the season. Hopefully with doing that we will avoid some injuries to the more experienced players and bring some young pups along.

My biggest concern is that players tend to get injured at two points, either early before they have worked up a sweat, or after they are tired. The tired part scares me with this amount of depth.

Mailon Kent is a great choice for the day, but I don't have anything in the way of personal memories about him; I was too young. My HS was so small that we didn't play football, there wasn't many games on tv, and I was hyperactive and would probably have been on Ritalin if they had it back then. So I just wasn't interested.

First real memory of an AU football game was TN game in 1965. I was floating the Cahaba River on a bass fishing trip with my dad, and at 1:15 that afternoon he pulled out the a.m. radio and gave me the job of keeping it turned so that we could hear Buddy Rutledge and Charlie Davis call the game. AU had 5 or 6 turnovers, and tried a long field goal on the last play that was short, and the game ended 13-13.

I was hooked on AU football and never missed listening to the games after that day. Got to see them play on live tv a few weeks later and they beat Spurrier and FL 28-17. Of course, there was always the replay on Sunday afternoon that I never missed. It was an hour long and they showed every play. Those were the days.

Coosa - I'm jealous. The only time we heard AU game on radio was the weekend in the late '60s we drove to the top of Grandfather Mtn and picked up the UT broadcast. Coincidence we decided to make a weekend vacation to the mtns when AU was playing UT? Probably not, but I was too young then to realize how smart my dad was.

Of course, we never got to watch Shug & Carl. Forty years and 1,690 cable channels later, we still don't get the Auburn show :-(

Agree, but if he's going to be the man next year I'd prefer to get him some playing time running real plays when it's not "crucial"
instead of next year trotting him out there raw on the first snap.

Redshirts are for teams with depth and parking future QBs behind starting QBs that are underclassmen. If the position is going to be open, your candidate for next year needs experience.

My opinion. WE.
