Auburn 41, West Virginia 30 BY THE NUMBERS
Let's take a look:
- Auburn's offense -- 74 plays, 400 yards.
- West Virginia's offense -- 80 plays, 509 yards.
- Auburn on third down -- 9 of 18
- West Virginia on third down -- 10 of 15
- Chris Todd -- 16-for-31, 284 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT
- Jarrett Brown -- 18-for-32, 1 TD, 4 INT
- Noel Devine -- 15 carries for 128 yards, 3 TDs. **He's a man**
- Ben Tate -- 19 carries for 75 yards, 0 TDs.
- Onterio McCalebb -- 8 carries for 20 yards, 0 TDs.
- The HABOTN Player of the Game: Darvin Adams. Six catches for 80 yards. Three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was ridiculous -- the one-handed catch.
- Runner up is Chris Todd. Second runner up is Noel Devine. Third runner up is Craig Stevens. Fourth runner up is Andrew McCain.
- Gene Chizik: ``I wish I had 87,000 game balls because our fans were a huge reason we won that game and I want them all to know that."
- Gene Chizik: ``We weren't tackling well -- that was the deal early in the game. That and the combination that they're really good on offense. The turnovers in the game were the huge momentum-swing differences in the game."
- Gene Chizik: ``What I did like tonight was I did see that our football team -- whatever the circumstances -- against a really good team fight and scratch and claw until the end to win it. I couldn't be more proud."
- Neiko Thorpe on QB Jarrett Brown: ``He is quick. You would think he has something on his jersey the way he keeps slipping away. We just had to keep coming at them."
- Chris Todd: ``Coach (Chizik) always talks about imposters during a game and we had to take them down with our will. We had to react to the situation as we always knew we could come back from the deficit."
- Jake Ricks: ``We had a lot of mistakes, but we finished. We've got to work on eliminating all those missed tackles. We stayed together -- even when they went up 14-0. They got off to an early jump, but we stayed together as a team. Nobody put their head down."

Winning is fun.
I love this team and staff. This is truly a team.
Whew, I still can't believe it. Even when we were up by 4, I kept thinking we were behind. Nice win, not a pretty win, but a nice win.
Man, I don't know if it's still the tummy bug, or was it the first quarter, but my tummy hurts.
Those interceptions of those middle screens were sweet.
Jhag with another snide comment...he's in HS for goodness sake...and full of comments born of ignorance.
JHAG....did you honor my request and spit out of the executive box down onto the Gaytor Fans for me? I hope so ...I hate Gaytors.
It was also good to see MSU's defense shut down Vandy. MSU isn't a push over, although they are just about a lock for 6th in the west.
Chris Todd definitely gets mixed reviews on this game. I saw around a half dozen poor decisions, although he was getting pressured. On the other hand, he made some outstanding throws.
The D was almost better at catching than the O.
I'd love to see Todd step into a throw... just once. I don't think it has happened yet.
Looks like we are headed to a 4-0 start. I thought this was the most important game of the year, and sure was great to win it.
I think that our chances of winning at least 8 games are now extremely high, and the 10 win scenario is still out there.
But I think TN and ARK are both tougher than I expected. I'd be happy with a split on those right now.
Good night to all the Hotties!
I saw both from Todd. Some passes looked great, while others needed work. Some were understandable because he was running for his life. His stats ended up looking good, but there were some obvious poor decisions.
I think we destroy Tennessee and likely get in a shootout with Arkansas.
Last week, I thought we had the TN game locked up. This week, not so much.
I didn't see much of the GA/AR game but it looked like they could move the ball quickly.
D. Miller - What amazes me is that Todd can throw it off his back foot and still get it 30 yds down the field. He didn't dream of doing that last year.
So far I am happy with Todd's arm. I was worried when he was named that starter that his arm would fade as the season went on. I haven't seen that.
Steve,
Nobody destroys UT because their D. Florida struggled all game long.
You have to remember it's our 1st road game as well.
Well, we get a chance to get some injured folks healthy next week and perhaps get some playing time for some backups building on some depth I hope.
I am aware of that RK. I just think their offense isn't there and we will look good against their style of defense. I feel pretty good about that game.
Arkansas doesn't have a defense, but their offense could give us fits.
I am thinking at this point that our chances are better with Arky rather than with UT.
I know, Coosa... just imagine what he could do if he'd step into a throw for once.
Hoopie: Are you hatin' on jhag?
OK, I can't sleep.
Basically if you score three times on Tennessee, you likely win. They are great on offense on any plays where Crompton doesn't touch the ball.
Well preach to us Brotha Jet.
Any team we play better be able to put some points on the board. I can't see anyone keeping us from scoring at least in the upper twenties.
It's entirely possible that Auburn is pretty good.
Georgia is concerning me a bit because I think they are a team that is coming together. They may be tough by the end of the season.
I feel pretty confident we can win 8. Anything more than that is gravy.
Georgia's schedule is too hard. They'll be beat up by the end of the season.
I am more concerned with us being beat up at the end of the year, which is why I think we may lose 3 of the last 4.
Undoubtedly, the films will show a thousand problems, but they will reveal a special characteristic -- heart.
How many Auburn teams have we seen get jumped on and never get up?
Not just Tuberville teams, but some Bowden teams, and a few Dye teams as well.
We had that opportunity tonight. We chose the better path -- to fight to win or die trying.
Like I've said probably a half-dozen times tonight, I'll worry about the tackling and the special teams coverage tomorrow. I am so proud of a team that refused to phone it in.
Jay G gives Darvin Adams the player of the game, with Todzilla coming in second. That sounds about right.
It doesn't appear that either UGA or Arky has a pass defense to speak of.
This actually reminded me of the Florida game of a few years ago. It seemed in this first half that there was not way we could stop their offense, and then we did.
Quotes have been added.
I'm headed home.
Thanks for making the HABOTN part of your gameday!
Jet,
It is truly a different attitude on the Plains these days. I like it. I like the never say die attitude.
Thanks for the excellent coverage, Jay.
Everyone should check out Jay's quotes. They are pretty cool.
Mack Brown calls once of his receivers a vital "clog" in his offense.
No wonder, they're not scoring as much as they could.
Many positives, many negatives... The biggest thing is that it really seems that our team this year is just that... a team. They are all in it together and they don't give up or turn their back on each other during the game. I am very proud of that.
So, when is the last time Auburn scored over 40 points three games in a row? Was Roosevelt president at the time?
Jay G. --
Great work. Thanks for the hospitality. Scottie B, thanks for the very special cold beverage.
Tell Bag nice meeting him, Hater. And I told you we'd cover.
what a game. just got back to the rv. the fans were as insane as i've ever seen. even when AU was down. no one ever gave up. WAR EAGLE HOTTIES.
tubs was 3-15 in games in which the opponent scored 30+.
the wins were LAtech OT 48-45, Syracuse 3OT, UGA 2005 31-30.
chiz is now 1-0.
Just in from the game, wow, what a night it was. Just a few thoughts from the game without watching the replay:
1) It rained. A lot. We were sitting in the upper deck, and everyone was smashed together in the concourse after the announcement. The behavior was surprisingly good, but a pretty miserable experience. I don't know if I have ever seen so much rain in a short period of time.
2) I really like FAH and what he brings to the offense, but N Devine is a magician on the field. Unbelievable.
3)Neiko Thorpe seemed to have a hell of a game from the nosebleed section. Am I wrong? And Darvin Adams is just outstanding.
4) Not trying to steal Jet's thunder, but the heart showed tonight was hard to believe after seeing the team play last year. They just refused to go away.
5) I don't know if I will be able to attend any more games this year, but I won't soon forget this effort. The stadium looked pretty much full even after the flood, and it was great to see JH electric again. Sorry to ramble on.
nice win. i think w va will end up in the bcs. they sure helped us a lot tonight though.
Good God I need a nitroglycerin pill!!! War Eagle, and prayers for Jarrett Brown. One helluva QB, and I hope he and the Mountaineers have a great rest of the season. He and Devine must have eaten a bowl full of Wheaties and Awesome this morning. Very impressed with WVU, more impressed with AU! Way to go Coach Chizik, way to make Muschamp look like a school-girl Troop, and way to hang in there and play 60 minutes team. WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!!
Noel Devine -- 15 carries for 128 yards, 3 TDs. **He's a man**
As Was Jarret Brown. What a great team we played tonight.
Heart. Our team has it. Spirit. Our team has it. Desire. Our team has it. We didn't give up, ever. That game could have swung either way, and the difference was the coaching staff. I love it that Coach Chizik makes the team learn, recite, and adopt The Auburn Creed. I love it that Coach Taylor is on fire from the time he gets up in the morning, til the time he goes to sleep. Heck, he's probably on fire when he's asleep! I love it that although the crowd was stunned, they got right back into it when the team said, "No, we aren't out, thank you!" If you can't find inspiration in this game, and support our team, let me recommend a bus ride to Tuscalooser. They need more band-waggon fans! War Eagle!!!!
From what I saw, WV has a great chance to win the big east.
I am just now getting in from the game AND IM STILL WET!!! lol This was the most fun Ive had at a game since the 1993 UF game. JH was so LOUD it was rediculous!!
One more thing, I don't know if it has been discussed, but part of Chizik's talk to the team was shown on the HD screen at halftime. Randy Campbell and Bo were in the locker room and Chizik talked about how the team was just continuing the excellence that was there before they arrived. A nice touch I thought.
Great game to attend -- especially in the student section. Got soaked, but wow, what a game.
AUBigCat... That 93 AU - UF game was one for the ages, much like tonight's game. Wow did we fight, and give 'em Hell in both games!
MTSU beat Maryland. It is nice to see Franklin have some success. I do think he caught more than his fair share of crap at Auburn.
Todd had the flu this last week. I didn't realize that. What a gutsy performance.
Trooper Taylor has just ran all the way from Auburn to come to my condo in Atlanta to get me fired up, and then turned around and ran back to Auburn so he could watch HABOTN! What an awesome guy! And when I say ran, I mean on his feet! 18-wheelers had to get out of his way!!
woot woot, war damn eagle!
Great to meet all u today..
Back in Atlanta... Night all
The replay is about to start on ESPN2... At 3:00 am EDT and going until 5:00 am EDT. I have to watch it because I can not sleep after that win! Hotties, we needed that. Thanks you coach Chizik for what you brought to Auburn. You are a true Auburn Man, and understand what it means to be an Auburn Man. All Auburn Men and Women love and appreciate you and what you are doing for our beloved. War Eagle to you. Oh, and Jay, thank you too. This blog means a lot to all Auburn people here. You too, are a true Auburn Man.
GREAT! TO BE! AN AUBURN TIGER!
said it's
GREAT! TO BE! AN AUBURN TIGER!
This ESPN replay sucks. It's more like the ESPN replay of commercials we didn't get to show during the rain delay.
Just in from Auburn. What a fantastic game. I tried to find Kristina's tailgate but failed. I was looking for folks wearing HABOTN hats.
I claim this blog in the name of scrappy wins.
WDE.
The game is on sec digital networks page.
Good Morning Hotties and War Eagle - I said it last night and I'll say it again (which echoes a lot of your sentiment), definitely not a pretty win full of highlights, but a fantastic and gutsy win. Those kids played with more heart than I thought they had in them. I think this one goes a long way towards establishing the rest of the season. Hopefully, injuries are few and far between. Based on what I saw from our Tigers and what little I've been able to see of some of the rest of our opponents, I'm leaving the "cautiously optimistic" area and heading right over to "downright pumped".
I hope those of you who were there don't get a cold or anything from that dousing.
War Eagle. Keep Hate Alive.
And another thing. I've decided that our friend Jet deserves a promotion here. I've known Jet for a very long time and have seen him do many great things. He has a gift with the language which I envy. I have all types of thoughts run through my mind which may seem profound while rattling around my dust trap but Jet can pen them in the most eloquent way. Because of this, because he has a background in journalism, because he has a background as a spokesperson, because he took a comment probably intended as a joke and turned it into an official resolution from Alabama's Goat Hill and because I say so, I'm hereby appointing Jet to be my official spokesperson on this most esteemed forum.
Now, don't let me down boy or I'll yank that privilege from you in a hot minute.
Incredible game. INCREDIBLE game. I'm not sure if or how many people mentioned it, but even at 14-0 with 4-5 minutes gone in the 1st Quarter, you didn't feel like these guys were out, they were still playing and working hard. What a great TEAM this groups of players and coaches is.
By the way I'll also mention that the wall cloud we saw approach the stadium was impressive and a pain in the butt.
Several couch burners on my flight to ATL. Sporting my orange and blue shirt. Gettin' the evil eye. Love it.
Had a very interesting situation at the game last night. For whatever reason on WVU fan and his companion felt the need to stand while WVU was on offense. We were in the press side upper deck. Stood up in foron of this older lady that in my opinion didn't need to look through him. It was awfully nice to watch him walk down that stairwell with 12 minutes to go in the game, cause he knew what wasn't going to happen - even with his standing. Just a note.
BTW other than that DB had a great time meeting up with the other WVU fans as we huddled on the concourse trying to get out of the deluge.
I enjoyed seeing their fans misery this year on TV. After the things that were said to me and my wife after the game last year I wish we scored 50.
But pulling a win out of this game was even better.
Spoke to a Couch Burner -- grqacious in defeat. Called the stadium "amazing," and the people "the nicest he's met." Said "you can keep the rain."
During the rain delay (and many other times throughout the night) WVU fans were scooping up water on the upper deck and pouring it down on the students. I'm not talking about just a few more drops, it was massive amounts of water that people were dodging. Classy!
Stay classy, Morgantown! - Ron Burgandy.
did anyone see any hot ladies wearing WVU colors at the game?
didn't think so...
most i saw looked like female weightlifters...
but the WVU fans i encountered were nice before and after defeat. at least they got to have a good time for a little while on their long trip. the can carry that big 'ol "L" back to morgantown now.
What up, Hotties?! I feel like I aged 10 years in a 3 hour span last night. Nevertheless, great win by the Good Guys, as most have said, they showed a lot of heart and a lot of fight. That attitude will lead to more wins.
As Jhag said, I guess I'll take it.
By the way, who knew Eric Smith had hands?
What a great game. It's been a long time (UGA in 05?) since we got in a shootout like that.
PROPS!!! to the AU grounds crew and the designers of the field drainage. it drained spectacularly after the pregame deluge. i've seen other field where half that rain and it would have looked like a lake. footing did not seem to be much of an issue for the players in the game. now the field itself needs a few weeks off after ball st.
Like an old movie:
The Good - we won
The Bad - gave up too much yardage
The Ugly - Tackling
What a win though. TEAM is the word of the night.
That high crown on the field works very well.
I still say in the big picture the D won the game for us.
24 points off of 6 turnovers won that game.
Yes the tackling was bad, horrible in the first quarter and bad overall for the game. However if the D didn't confuse Brown and get those turnovers and set the offense up, then we don't win the game.
I'll be happy, if I never see Noel Devine and Jock Sanders again.
Any word on the cruits?
Jock Sanders and Noel Devine need to be investigated for taking a Vaseline bath during the rain delay.
FENG!
May be but when our guys are grabbing air they don't need Vaseline. Taking bad angles hurt more than anything. This should be coachable and get corrected.
Noel Devine, which is a phrase of Hillbilly derivation, is loosely translated "Fred Talley."
I liken the game more to "Big Jake." Some good folks were lost in the beginning, and there were struggles along the way. But the righteousness of our cause.and our hard work, we defeated the bad guys and recovered the little boy.
As the Couch Burners left Jordan-Hare, some may have said, "Auburn football? I thought you were dead."
In the flood and mud of a miserable night, Auburn answered, in its best John Wayne voice, "Not hardly."
First of all, War Damn Eagle!!
Darvin Adams is a BEAST!! Todd was very good at times and very bad...nearly gave me a heart attack! And yes, D. Miller, I'd love to see him step into a throw as well.
I've never seen SO many missed tackles by a team that won the game. You would have thought WV was greased down with Crisco! They are a very good team though. Good luck to them the rest of the season.
Our team definitely has heart...and a lot of it. They could have very well fallen apart, but they kept their heads up and kept fighting. I attribute that to the spirit and teaching of the coaching staff. Trooper Taylor is so fun to watch...he's like a mexican jumping bean on speed.
Great job, Tigers and all of the fans that stuck out the weather and cheered them on for the win!
I can't quit smiling.
Sensi?
Oh,Sensi?
Where are you, Sensi?
Auburn didn't do a lot of tackling during practices. With Auburn's depth (HAHA) not only the game execution suffers, the practice suffers too because you risk injuring your ..eh.. the first string freshmen LBs, and his backup is in high school.
An SEC team should NEVER have to send freshmen LBs, OL, DL, CBs and safeties as starters... EVER. When you do, you should expect errors in execution.
I am watching the replay on TIVO. The announcers are HORRIDDDDDD!!!
If you cannot get the players name right bu reading his number, try reading the back of his shirt...
Called Burns - todd
and Adams - TZAC..
PS 4 missed tackles (from my count) on no -l's first long run.
DL
Sensi is engaging the enemy over at Tidesports.com...I go over there just to see how the infidels react...Sensi, he gets knee deep.
werk, you can see ND & JS every sunday coming to an nfl team near you.
These announcers were akin to John Madden and Al Michaels discussing Brett Favre during a Monday Night blowout. I liked how Bob Davie starts talking about USC and Washington and then has to throw Nick Saban and how no matter how successful we are, it will only be relative to Bama.
Leader,
Wait until the 2nd half when Mark Jones says "he steps out of bounds at the 81 yard line".
i just assume the espn announcers are bad now. last week we got the "U" team (as apposed to the "A" or "B" team). They were awful. on the duce we probaby got the middle of the pack announcers as the good ones were on the games that mattered.
I would love to see the "A" team announce an AU game. mr. t would be awesome doing play by play!
RK - That was funny lastnight.
The wife at the time said, oh it was just a mistake. By the end of the game she was saying to me that these guys suck.
That was a crazy, crazy game.
I assume we will be working on tackling drills this week.
I think we have a long way to go, but I love the way this team plays.
And a HUGE thank you to THT!!!! You and your wife are the best!

bout the only good wvu pic i have seen
War Eagle Everyone!!!
Well, this team would have rolled over and died in recent years but this team played awesome. It's not the greatest team by any stretch, but this team has a lot of heart and a lot of confidence. I don't know how far that will take us in wins and losses, but it setting a great foundation for the Gene Chizik Era.
I'll echo my brother's earlier statement "IT's GREAT TO BE AN AUUUBBBURRRNNN TTTTIGGGEERRR!!!!"
Anyone know the legality of cops digging their hands in your pockets when entering a football game at Auburn? Happened to me yesterday.
DL. You might wanna stop counting the missed tackles.
I had no idea Devine was a trained matador.
No idea about the digging in your pockets, Matt.
Was she hot though?
Yea she was hot. Asked if I had weapons. Man, I had to bite my tongue on that one.
Well, we won. It certainly wasn't pretty, and WV caused themselves more problems on offense than our defense did.
But we proved we could fall WAY behind and keep fighting, and be forced to play catch-up for almost an entire game and still come out on top
How many times in the Tuberville era did we come back from a 14-point deficit?
I can only think of one offhand: Syracuse in '02. Any others?
According to Rivals, Dyer had a great visit and will announce with-in two weeks and said that Auburn fans have nothing to worry about.
I hate to say it, but after two games, I don't see Eltoro living up to the hype. He's looked really bad when he's been out there.
New thread UPZ.
Eddie, that is goodness. RK - I think it is too early. It was his first start and he has had moments. I don't think you can peg him already.
Matt, I am pretty sure they are allowed to search you legally and are you sure it was WVU fans dumping water on the student section? There are drainage areas that when there is that much rain end up dumping huge amounts periodically.
'Say hello to my little friend' would've been too cheesy, right?
----------
Back to the (offense) game review:
Andrew McCain will need to work on his assignments.
Kodi Burns needs to practice throwing.
Jay Wisner is one fast whiteguy.
Eric Smith: his rolling ball like stride and catching motion. Beautiful. 5 ft 10 / 240 lbs slot receiver? I think I saw WVU DC's head explode.
YOU'VE GOTTA HAVE HEART. MILES AND MILES OF HEART.
