Chizik LIVE BLOG

Hey everyone. Welcome to the Athletic Complex, where coach Gene Chizik will be holding his weekly press conference.

  • He has arrived. Let's BLOG.

  • Opening statement: "We learned a lot out our football team last week. We have room for improvement in so many ways. We did some really good things everywhere. So much room for improvement. We've gone back to work, as of yesterday, preparing for a Mississippi State team with a lot of energy ... new energy. It's a team that plays with extremely high energy."

  • More advanced that expected: "I don't think so. There's just so many question marks we didn't know. We were hoping we be in this kind of area. We feel like we got a great starting point."

  • Similarities between Malzahn and Mullen: ``There are some similarities. They use two quarterbacks -- two different kinds of body types. There are a lot of similarities with what they did at Florida. Defensively, that's a little bit of an advantage for us because we see that every day."

  • ``We have to do what we do and do it better than we did the week before."

  • On if Auburn needs more than two tailbacks: "We're always in the market for more. The more, the merrier. You need two or three tailbacks, guys who can carry the ball, to get you through the year."

  • On the McCalebb/Tate combo: ``When you have two bakcs who are that different on one team ... the physicality of one back versus the guy with great speed ... the defense runs all over the place and they get tired. It puts pressure on them."

  • On Eric Smith: ``You're going to see him in a uniform this week. We're going to move on."

  • On McCalebb: ``Anytime you bring a guy in January, it's night and day. He needs to stay humble because he certainly hasn't arrived. He played like we expected him to play. He absolutely loves the game of football. He practices like that."

  • "We're not anywhere near satisfied with the rhythm and the tempo of our offense. It's got to be faster."

  • On the coaches: ``In your first game, you worry about substitutions. You worry about adjustments. That didn't happen Saturday night. Communication was almost seamless. It's as good as we could have expected for Game One."

  • On Eltoro Freeman: "We're hoping there will be a couple more guys back. We're playing that by ear. We can't play a guy who's 40 or 50 percent."

(I spoke briefly with Freeman last night and he said he's feeling a lot better. He hopes to play this weekend.)

  • Is McCalebb durable?: ``The bigger guys can run outside and inside. The litter guys can run inside and outside, too. They can both doth both. They both will. I don't know if they'll be durable enough. We're going to try to be a very physical offense and run the football."

  • On Antoine Carter: "We're playing that by ear, too."

  • THAT'S A WRAP.

JGT,

Before Chiz arrives can you answer this

In the AP poll what determines the number of votes that come out of a state. Noticed some states had 1 voter, some 2, some 3, etc.????

Good question to ask the coach Is Eric back with the team?

From what I've heard, and I assure you I am not sure of this information's "truthiness":

Last week Eric Smith filed a harassment complaint against the pansy dude thing.

Usually that causes both parties to drop charges. However the court hearing was supposed to be in week 1 of November or somewhere.

I hate field goals I wish they would put the goal post on top of the end zone seats.
In stead of worrying about faster tempo they should concentrate on scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

I thought Eric Smith was a Rudy Johnson type, a power back. I am hoping they use him late in the game. No need to keep Tate or FAH in when we are up by 3 scores late.

College Football News, which picked us to lose, must have been impressed. We're No. 28 in their rankings -- trailing Florida, UAT, LSU, Georgia and Ole Miss among SEC teams.

Chris Low has us ranked 9th in his SEC power rankings.

It's early and everyone is all over the board.

12:54 PM

A win over West Virginia will likely give us a bit more respect, but MSU and Ball State aren't going to impress anyone. Ball State was beaten by North Texas. Who the heck is North Texas? I assume they are a school in Texas.

Monica, how long is the highlights? 11 minutes of video and it's still 'pregame'.

I've heard every ad of every business in Auburn, while watching every color girl thing.

I've also seen the cameraman get into the face of, and instruments of the band. At around 5:30 someone mutters "I don't know what I'm doing". If that's the cameraman, I agree.

Monica. Thank you for the suggestion.

For those that have not checked it, you can go to Official website and click on the link (Auburn football everyday: Lousiana Tech Highlights).

First 10-15 minutes of pregame thing are dull, however it gets better.

Now I wanna see the Auburn reality show thing.

1:12 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't have a problem with voting Baylor No. 15 at this point. It's just guessing right now.

There weren't a ton of BCS vs. BCS games last week -- about a dozen. If you're a BCS team and you beat another one -- that as good of a reason as any to give them a vote.

It's like the first votes counted in an election -- they're just the first piece of jigsaw puzzle. Plus, the AP poll is just for funsies these days.

1:20 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Man, now ya'll have done it. I am now pumped about the MSU game. LaTech probably has a better offense than MSU, but I bet MSU's defense is tougher. Seeing as we scored as much points in our first game as we typically scored in 3 games last season, it will be interesting to see if we can throw up some big numbers against them.

That's a perennial bowl team, and, in the end, a quality team compared to many of the first-week opponents of other ranked teams." ahhhhh NOT!!!!

1:31 PM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

So WVU's win over Liberty was more impressive that AU's win? And did the voters who gave Oregon votes think they were filling out a boxing scorecard? Oregon was pitiful!

1:36 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Re: Oregon. This program is overrated year after year after year. They always want this to be a quality team but they haven't been since the 11-1 Joey Harrington season.

Re: Navy. This is a perrenial bowl contender and runs a very unorthodox offense by today's standards. They are a tough opener for a team trying to shake the rust off.

Re: West Virginia. This squad has my respect until we beat them in 2 weeks. Until then anything they do will be non-consequential as they looked miserable and then came back and took our defense to the shed last season.

1:42 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Navy is a good team with an offense that gives almost everyone fits.

However, if you are Ohio State, you are supposed to have the athletes and discipline to handle it.

1:42 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

You just can't compare the performance of most teams from week to week.

1:43 PM

Of course Ohio State should be able to handle it. And handle it they did. They won. But they didn't look good doing it.

Steve, I couldn't care less where we are ranked. All we can do is take care of business, one week at a time. Let's get past Miss State before we start talking about 4-0.

South Carolina is a definite must win for UGA, and if they don't win, they will struggle to win 5 games.

2:23 PM

Ironically, I considered LaTech a must win for us. With Chiz riding a 10 game losing streak, an upset would have been a disaster. MSU isn't a must win, but we really do need it.

2:24 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

MSU is a big game for us, because a lot of people in the off season started thinking of Auburn as a lower level team in the west, barely ranking us above MSU.

I think in the school of public opinion it would do us good to prove there is still a huge gap between Auburn and Miss State. Just eliminate all of those thoughts all together.

2:26 PM

I am with you on that RK. We are not as bad as many think. More than likely depth will end up costing us, but I do think we have a shot at ending up in the top half of the SEC West.

2 of the many things that impressed me this weekend.

1. We have coaches that can see and evaluate what other teams are doing and make moment by moment adjustments i.e. long TD throw.

See them jump a route, then go the heck after them. Haven't seen that at AU in a while.

2. FAH moving from the left across the formation and picking up a DE (#91) to allow Todd to complete a long pass. He may be fast, but he's also smart and tough.

It's amazing how we haven't been able to get any other fast, capable, games breakers to block in the last several years, or so "they" said while those game breakers sat on the bench and we sucked.

2:58 PM

Full contact, and it is apparently not the first legends game that Notre Dame has had. They mentioned a legends game against a European team too.

In this case, the Japan team has Japan pros and college players I believe.

Someone asked about Gabe McKenzie. Well Trott had one pass thrown at him on the sideline towards the endzone by Kodi Burns. Many fans groaned it was interference, but Trott was no where near the ball or his route. So with that lone pass I did not see McKenzie either. I can only assume the coaches know something we dont. We didnt use the TE's much. We didnt have to.

I think that the T.E. position as we know it may be a thing of the past. I saw Gabe on the sideline but not in the game. Trott was so slow that The play had almost zero chances of being successful. Anyone else with any speed would have been able to get in a position to catch Kodi's throw.

That play to Trott was a failure from the get go.

One of the main complaints on Kodi is he doesn't have good mechanics and doesn't get set when he throws...well that play forces him to throw quickly which generally keeps the QB from getting set and using fundamentals and it looked like Trott either gave up on the play or didn't know what was going on.

Had he caught the ball it would've almost been negative yardage (by virtue of earth's rotation), and I don't think he would've made it to the end zone before Sunday morning.

So yeah, good decision by Burns.

Cincy,

Don't start on me again today, I can't take it. I don't know when I have laughed as much as I did last night reading your posts. That looks almost like the game we played in the first or second grade called bean bag toss. I think they could have come up with a better name than Corn Hole. Oh my God, I have got myself laughing now. Good that you made time for Bible study, I need to do some of that myself.

RK ...

It looked to me that Trott tipped the play and he was covered up quickly, and that the design of the play was to throw to Trott, or sling it away.

Also running the play to the short side prevents Kodi from improvising and running.

Steve,

Gus was yelling at Todd several times to run it, run it run it. It was not going at the speed he wanted.

Blogger mytommyd said...

Yeah IV my stepson caught me offguard when he wanted a cornhole board. I believe all I could get out was "Pardon?!?!" Yeah I think they could have used a different name, too.

3:51 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Can't imagine this offense going faster. And when they can finally do it the real way they want without subsituting any players for a period of time, that will be fantastic. I have a feeling because of our depth though we may be a little way off for that.

3:52 PM
Blogger IV said...

MytommyD,

Man, I have no idea what I would have said if one of my younuns had come up to me and asked for a Corn Hole board. Let's just say, I would have had severe concerns about his wardrobe, even to the point that I would have been checking his underwear drawer.

3:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea IV, I saw that. It actually tickled the crap out of me. Malzahn can be intense.

By the way, I can't believe Cornhole is really a game and not associated with Beavis and Butthead.

Hey Hotties,

Too much work today! Just popping in to say "War Eagle" and "Hate Bama!". JH was a lot of fun Saturday night. I looked around a bit for HABOTN gear, but didn't see any.

Also, alternate name/brand for "Cornhole" is "Baggo". I have a Baggo board. You can actually get them in AU colors with the logo.

Thanks for the explanation on the AP poll, Jet.

I kind of figured out the national votes but the state thing got me, such as, Georgia getting 1, Alabama getting 2, and Florida getting three. I figured it was based on something... I just didn't know what the something was. I didn't realize GA had a minimal number of Division 1-A schools.

Thanks again.

4:11 PM

I can believe GA has fewer Division 1A schools. You go south of Macon and there is a whole lot of nothing. Go buy and onion and that is about it until you get to Savannah.

Stay classy San Diego.

I don't even know who Babs is, much less what she said.

I assume Vince Dooley's wife, but that's just a guess.

Steve,

I don't know about 700 yards, but I do think we left a couple of touchdowns on the field with mistakes we made. (The Tate fumble and the first drive when we got a FG instead of a TD)

She said "chickensh#$" live on the air while telling one of her stories.

Ok, the one play I thought was most dangerous was the handoff from behind thing we ran in the first half.

That had Tony Franklin sandlot fumblicious written all over it in my opinion.

Anybody see the Auburn Football Review.
I was a little embarrassed when Mike Hubbard announced the Tiger Player of the game: Orlando McCalebb... Orlando? Sure, it's a city, but he could've at least called him Toronto.

5:27 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

I thought that particular handoff was a thing of beauty. The ball just slid in his hands perfectly. A tad risky though.

I think the team didn't sell fake handoffs and playaction too well. RBs timing and separation will probably improve as the season progresses.

While everyone is talking about offense, I think the defense was phenomenal.

5:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sensi, in general this offense is going to have more risk to it. The amount of options that are available and the speed they try to execute it at is bound to make mistakes more likely. Hopefully the gains outweight the cost. And yes, some of this offense is similar to what Franklin would have run, although I do think Franklin was a better coach than most gave him credit for being. The problem was with the individual, it was with the combination of individuals.

5:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The defense was amazing considered the starting linebackers had to pretty much play the entire game. Herring had to play 54 snaps, if I remember correctly, which is a ton for a guy that only had one week of practice. I assume he wasn't out there when we were in nickle.

You tell somebody around here it is time for dinner late in the afternoon and they will tell, we done had that several hours ago. Anyway, I want be around on this site much tonight. We are having a chat session with my high school graduation class of 1957. Gonna be fun. We will get caught up on everybody's ailments and such. OT: I had to take my daughter back to the doctor again today for another follow up and check of her WBC count. I have never been so happy to hear that her lab results came back with a positive for Swine Flu which was the culprit for the very low WBC. He had also tested her for leukemia and other blood diseases which were all negative, so you can imagine my relief. It was a very long weekend to get those results, so I wasn't able to enjoy the game as normal. Next week, game on!!!

IV, you are very correct. Also, blaming is pretty much pointless. There were a lot of people to blame for last years unique season.

I am curious about how CTF is doing though. MTSU lost to Clemson in their opener, 37-14. Apparently Clemson returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns. MTSU only had 299 yards of offense, while Clemson had 361 yards. The stats make the game look a lot closer that the score, which is what really matters.

I am more amazed at the unity of this coaching staff. There is plenty of room for egos to clash here and it apparently hasn't. Trooper Taylor is sporting a 3 year contract, just like Malzahn. All of the assistants are making over 200k. It looks like an amazing mix to me and I have to take my hat off to Chizik for putting this staff together.

6:54 PM

I do not want to say "good to hear" upon knowing that someone has swine flu. So I'm utterly confused on what to say about Kathy's situation.

Did anyone ready teh article in the Advertiser about our WR commit Jeremy Richardson? He earned the ASWA Offensive Player of the Week award after helping his team to a 40-39 victory.

Jeremy Richardson

"After falling behind 20-0, Richardson hauled in seven receptions for 195 yards and four touchdowns (51, 50, 9 and 49 yards). The performance earned Richardson the Alabama Sports Writers Association offensive player of the week award."

I like the idea of having incentive based contracts. I never liked the idea of guaranteeing a coach so many millions of dollars for 10 years. It seemed pretty ridiculous. Tying a coaches salary into the success of the program only makes sense. While Saban has likely more than made up for his salary in what he has done for the dark side, Charlie Weis is getting payed about as much to turn Notre Dame into an afterthought.
