Believe it Or Not

Hey everyone. I received this in the inbox not too long ago and, honestly, I decided to let it sit for a minute. Seems impossible.

Here's what it said:
AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn senior Chris Todd is one of 10 quarterbacks that have been added to the watch list for the 2009 Manning Award, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Thursday. The preseason watch list was expanded to include players whose play during the 2009 season warranted
inclusion on the watch list.

Todd has completed 106-of-190 passes for 1,443 yards and 12 touchdowns
with just two interceptions this season, while leading Auburn to a 5-2
record. He is ranked 17th nationally in yards per completion (13.61),
tied for 21st in touchdown passes (12) and 37th in passing efficiency
(149.45). His average of 206.1 passing yards per game is No. 4 in the
SEC.

Todd has established a career high in passing yards three times this
season, with a season best of 287 yards against Ball State. He tied the
school record for touchdown passes in a game with five against the
Cardinals, one week after he threw four scoring passes against West
Virginia. He became the first Auburn quarterback ever to throw at least
four touchdown passes in back-to-back games.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of
the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the
candidates' bowl performances.

Chris Todd: Watch List Maker

This is only a Manning Watch. If this was a Manning Warning, you would be advised to seek cover and avoid oblong heads with sour faces and pre-snap histrionics.

Hey, he is still close to the top of the SEC in a lot of categories due to his first 5 weeks. I think the Mannings have been too busy the last two weeks to watch much college football.

Is this for Southern quarterbacks only?

Nah, just kidding. It might look really foolish in the coming weeks, but good for Chris all the same.

Well, if things pick back up then he will be back in the running for best in SEC. Wasn't he up top earlier?

Congrats to Chris. I hope he rebounds from these two subpar games to become a finalist. Oh, and win games.

Also, most of the country is unaware the suspicion most of us have: the last two weeks weren't a midseason funk, but instead due to Todd's ailing shoulder, which will not get better this year. Some national columnists think our early success was due to schedule alone. I disagree - the team goes as Todd goes, and Todd hasn't been Todd since midway through the UT game.

But this does show the power of Chizik's coach robot speak. There are no quotes to flow up to the national columnists and national TV peops, so they are unaware of the prevalent wisdom in the comment threads on Auburn blogs (and yes, we are quite wise).

What a fine honor for a fine young man who's having a fine season, and feeling fine, too.

I didn't get to watch the first half of the Arkansas game, and I didn't really watch the second half since it was pretty well out of hand. And I did not watch the UK game.

Is it really more of the same from last year with Todd?

Lobbing balls, no velocity, etc.

Scott, I would say Todd was in early 08 form the past two weeks. His arm is not what we saw early this year, but it hasn't quite reached the weak noodle category yet. His balls seem to float more than they were early in the year. I think at this point he can still make most necessary passes, but doesn't have the confidence to due to knowing his arm isn't completely right.

That is my uneducated 2 cents.

And on another note, Sidd Finch was a hell of a pitcher.

Blogger michael said...

Not quite the wounded ducks of yesteryear, Scott. More like leaving multiple passes short and just not having much velocity on the mid-range stuff.

4:52 PM
Blogger michael said...

wakerider, I think I would agree with that assessment. I think he was more prepared in early 08 though... I remember thinking during the first game last year the crazy amount of air Todd was putting under the ball for a 25 yard pass.

Throws shmoes. We need to run the ball anyway. More yards for Ben Tate.

4:56 PM
Blogger michael said...

Indeed Sensi, since winning is clearly related to the number of yards Ben Tate gains.

Thank you Jet for that fine example of coachspeak.

CTodd pre UT game = throwing reasonably crisp passes.

CTodd in the Ky game = shotputting.

Manning watch list - Wow.

I would ask if the ten finalists are all from the SEC; but, that would sound harsh.

Actually, Chris looked like a world beater against UT.

I think this week with rest will tell the tale. TT was not willing to go another route until it was too late last year.

Caudle is a good option if Chris is hurt.

Blogger Unknown said...

I hope it's in his head and not his arm. If it's in his head, he can get it back.

If it's his arm, I think Caudle will do OK and we'll see him sooner rather than later.

5:25 PM
Blogger michael said...

You would think if it was his arm that was hurt, Caudle would be the starter for the upcoming game. The coaches won't learn anything new about his arm midgame that they don't know midweek. They must really think it is still strong enough to make all the throws, otherwise why play him?

5:27 PM
Blogger ADP said...

I think it's in his head. Really, I do. I'm serious.

5:29 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think that's why he is resting from practice. They want to see if the arm comes back with rest. This is the guy who won the job in less than ten practices and by taking mental snaps in the spring.

5:30 PM
Blogger michael said...

Phred, the way the coaches are acting, they would appear to think his arm is good enough or "fine".

But if it is just in his head, wouldn't he miss long at least a couple of times while trying to overcompensate?

5:33 PM
Blogger ADP said...

he did the week before. threw some high balls in UK also. I think the bounce pass was a "don't eff this up" mistake. I think he just got tight all of the sudden. I think if we score early with a TD pass, he comes back to life with renewed vigor. If we stutter and sputter, more of the same.

What is Burns' major malfunction?

5:37 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

If they were going to start Caudle, do you think they would let LSU know?

I still think Todd starts and I believe these coaches know what they're doing.

Burns - decision making skills in the heat of the moment.

5:39 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I haven't seen anything from Burns running the wildcat that makes me think he'd be anymore effective than last year.

5:40 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I concur on Burns.

I wonder what his future role will entail.

5:42 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Burns made himself a team leader with his speech. That's why he plays. His future will depend on him keeping that role as much as making plays on the field.

I think Fannin would be more effective than Burns in the wildcat.

I would just as soon dump the wildcat. Teach KB to be our Randall Cobb.
