First Post: Friday of Week Five

Hey everyone. Swell campfire last night. I love that we can get such great participate without a lot of notice. Thursday nights are alright for Campfiring®!

I'm pretty bummed about not being able to get to Knoxville until tomorrow. I wish the UT-bound HOTTIES could have convened for some casual dining on the river. So it goes. Calhoun's will be missed. Or Ye Olde Steakhouse. Or wherever Scottie was going to suggest.

Here's the Auburn situation at this moment:

So, I am trying to think if I have ever seen a starting SEC quarterback with less support than Jonathan Crompton. I haven't seen anything that could be construed as positive.

I can't imagine this game not being a sell out, but even if it is not, there will be a crap load of screaming hillbillies in attendance. I don't think the crowd will be a major factor, but we will just have to wait and see. I think, in general, players block out the crowd to a large extent.

Ha, well I don't really consider the 'noog or Knoxvegas Tennessee. That's Appalachian territory over there. More mountain folk and such. Might as well be West Virginia.

I have worried about this game somewhat until it occurred to me that their two wins are against W. Kentucky and Ohio. When they played teams that were not barely above 1AA(or whatever they call it now) they lost. Most of the talk this week has been questioning our defense while the much hyped UT defense(based mostly on the FL game) gave up 23 to Ohio.

5:32 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Easy Michael. If you want to kind of lump us in with the west part of North Carolina, that's one thing. But West Virginia?

Too far.

Questions for the TN game:
Will TN put 8 men in the box and take their chances with Todd to TZ and DA?
How do we game plan for Berry?
Can we reverse the get-behind-early problem?
Will our special teams finally show signs of life?
How do we handle an AWAY game in the SEC?

5:37 PM
Blogger michael said...

Haha, well of course you guys are better than West Virginia... I was just saying you might as well be West Virginia. See?

Everyone quit worrying about the game. Unless Auburn turns the ball over a couple of times early and lets the crows in the game and gets shell shocked, AU will win easily. Don't worry about it.

I like Chizik and Co's attitude on the offense. It has that Lombardi feel too it. Everyone can know what's coming and still not be able to stop it. Although with Malzahn's scheme it happens quicker, and no one is entirely sure where the ball is. Especially the camerama... camera person.

In my experience, alot of people in the South talk about everybody else in the South the same way that they're talk about in the rest of the South.

Dang, now Michael's observation about the crows has me worried.

Imagine the following: it's the fourth quarter, UT leads by 4, and AU is driving. The clock reads 00:07 and AU has just called its last timeout. It's 4th and goal at the UT 3.

Todd brings the team up to the line of scrimmage. He begins to bark out the signals, when suddenly...

CAW! CAW!! CAW!!!! An enormous flock of foul-smelling black birds descends from the upper reaches of legendary Neyland Stadium and swoops down over the AU side, their guttural cries piercing the night sky.

I dunno, Loganville, I kinda liked the all-black look back in the Glanville era. Beats the heck out of the boring hodgepodge they were these days.

I was living in GA when the Falcons started up in '66, and I liked that look too. When they deliberately modeled their unis after the Dawgs in the '80s, I wasn't as fond of them.

LT,

I think they will have to prove they can do it passing.

I think UT will force us to prove we can pass the ball before the run opens up.

7:37 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Wherever TN gives them, that's where. As good as Monte is, I don't think he can take away the run and pass simultaneously.

7:38 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

UT is going to put more pressure on us than we've seen yet...so I hope our OL and Todd are up to the test.

7:39 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

You can't exploit UT's front or secondary, they're both respectable. Gus will keep them guessing with balance.

7:40 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Hard to say what will happen. I tend to think Monte will stack the line to stop the run and make Todd beat them through the air, but the fact that virtually everyone thinks that as well leads me to believe he'll try something different.

7:41 PM

Find Berry and avoid him.

He usually steps up like an extra LB and falls back into coverage.

7:49 PM
Blogger wtc said...

AU pounds UT all day. UT puts 8 in the box and AU beats them by dinking the ball down the field. Eentually they cheat up to cover the short flair pass and Todd hits them with a hitch and go. Fannin has a good day Saturday. Todd throws for @ 280.

7:50 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Negating the defense or special teams, if Auburn can hold the ball 58 minutes, TN will only have 2 minutes to score enough points to win.

7:50 PM
Blogger wtc said...

UT wins the time of possession, as every team has against AU.

7:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Malzahn's shell game with the ball keeps the UT defense baffled. The game is close at the half, but AU pulls away late in the 3rd qtr.

7:58 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Todd has got to hit the flair, screen, dink, dunk - what ever you want to call it to the running back in stride - only pass he has failed to execute well. That will get them out of the box.

For some strange reason I don't think we have seen just how strong Todd's arm is yet. I'm feeling a frozen rope deep post to Adams on one of those cheatin' 8/9 in the box times.

8:03 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Only thing that concerns me with Todd this year is that he hasn't been under pressure much at all.

Well that and sometimes the ball hangs up on him downfield.

8:06 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I didn't see the UT-UF game and that's what UT's defense's rep seems to based on. Was it simply being able to key on Tebow?

8:09 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

WERK, thought the same thing. What happens when and/or if Todd is constantly pressured?

8:09 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could have a whole game like the first half we had in TN in 2004? I really hope this isn't a close game - it makes my heart have to work too hard.

8:10 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Someone on this blog said this earlier, sorry I don't remember who, but I think we will see aspects of Malzahn's offense that we haven't seen before.

8:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

They are pretty solid tacklers...and seem to be very disciplined.

They are definately well coached by Monte.

A big key is their QB on the D, Nick Reviez is out for the year. He made all of their defensive calls, and he's being replaced by a freshman.

So if Gus' offense can get the ball snapped by the 30 second mark on the play clock we can confuse their D with a new caller.

8:11 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Seems the times he has had so deres he has had some good pocket awareness and drifted away from it. He hasn't seen anthing like UT's D so far this season - I think we can manage though.

8:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Kathy,

The key to keeping Todd's jersey clean is tempo...keep things moving fast and keep the crowd quiet.

8:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I agree tempo is going to be key. I think we need to run 80-85 offensive plays.

8:14 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If we snap the ball quickly, those 100,000 won't have a lot of time to build noise. If we do that enough the 100,000 will be cut in half quickly.

8:18 PM
Blogger Loganville Tiger said...

Good point RK - keep the crowd out of it.

8:21 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Cincy-I'll take credit for that one.
Todd hasn't been pressured that much becasue the line has done a great job of blocking, IMO. I think it continues. They may press him osme, but I think he gets rid of it quickly. AU receivers know to look back when they see 8-9 rushers. All you have to do is turn around. They can't cover everyone if they bull rush. Trooper will make sure of that. I do understand evreyone's concerns though.

8:21 PM

Florida is not as good as they were last year. Tebow doesn't have receivers he can count on. He's trying to do it all himself. They stacked the box to stop the run. I think Auburn can answer that. Cincy, thanks for the offer, but I think I'll hang around here. My sister invited me to go up to Knoxville with her and her friend, but I just hate going to a stadium where Auburn is outnumbered. I can't stand to hear our team "booed".

I posted this earlier today, but I think they played UF close because is really a one man show now. Tebow carried the team. i think he had 25 carries. He has nto found a P harvin yet, and were they missing Dempster the speedy RB? UF became very one deminsional. I don't think UT canmake Au one deminisional. Imay be wrong, but I think GM has too many weapons and AU doesn't count on 1 or specific guys to carry the load. it is spread around, just like at Tulsa.

Blogger wtc said...

Shut down the run, AU can pass. No one receiver that you can just shut down and therefore shut down the pass. Same for the run. Just too many weapons. Not all are GREAT weapons, but they are consistent weapons.

Not only have I sipped the kool aid, if AU wins by 14+, I will make a BIG batch of and pass it out for free at a location TBA.

That's the problem that defenses face. There's no star to try to shut down, just a lot of capable guys that can burn you if they get a break.

Misdirection and us continually running the triple and quadruple option is why Todd shouldn't get pressured often. It is hard to pressure the ball when you don't know where the ball is.

My hubby is not happy that I picked bama to beat KY by 15.5. He says I should always pick against bama for the principle of the thing. What do y'all think?

missinit,
I think you can pick all the other games, just not the Friday one. But, I am far from being in the know on this stuff.

10:07 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, you can still pick the games that haven't started. That reminds me. I haven't reviewed my picks.

10:09 PM
Blogger missinit said...

okay then, what am I doing wrong??????

It let me click on the circles of all the rest of the games but when I click to save it goes through the proacess of refreshing but it still says incomplete, but all my circles are still there.

GRRRRRR....anybody got any ideas????

10:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

You may need to pick scores and the highest and lowest scoring teams.

10:16 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Maybe it is saying incomplete because you can't pick that first game?

10:16 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Man, I may be too hyped over the game to sleep tonight.

Blogger missinit said...

Dang Cincy....

Duh.....

I am so lame!!! You must be right. It does say 16 of 17 but incomplete evidently because of the one that I could not choose.

I am embarrassed to say I actually have an education, from Auburn no less, but evidently I cannot yet read!

Thanks y'all.

Sorry (long):

Saw some earlier commentary on t's QB - thought I'd pass along something a friend in the media somewhat verified as true:

September 30, 2009
What do you get when you put Peyton Manning and Jonathan Crompton in the same room? A ticked off former UT quarterback, that’s what.
At least that’s what some are saying from their last meeting with each other.
Remember when Manning was in town recently? Think back to the weekend Tennessee played Western Kentucky at Neyland Stadium- that’s when Manning had an interesting exchange with Crompton in the training room at the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex- at least that’s what sources say.
Manning is a team player and when he’s on campus he is usually busy either awarding his scholarship or in the case of his latest visit, giving a bucket load of money back to the athletic department.
Anyway, according to one source, the Tennessee great sat down in the training room with the Vols’ current signal caller and Manning began talk to him. As Manning and Crompton talked, members of the team in the training room began to gather around to listen to what Manning had to say to Crompton.
It appears the only person in the room that wasn’t paying attention to Manning was the very person who could use his advice the most- Crompton. Sources say Crompton was looking around the room as if to appear disinterested in what Manning had to say.
It gets better… errr… or worse, depending on whether you view this story as a tragic inside look at the Vols’ offensive leader or a humorous story to illustrate why the Vols can’t seem to get it together. I view it as both.
Crompton’s next move, according to a source, was to excuse himself to the restroom. He never returned. Needless to say, Manning wasn’t happy about Crompton’s insulting behavior. The term “pissed off” was used to describe Manning’s feelings regarding the situation.
Like a true professional, Manning shook it off and talked to the receivers for another half hour.
First, if this is indeed what happened, Crompton showed a lot of hubris to think that he doesn’t need to hear what Peyton Manning has to say to him. Second, if he refuses to show interest in what Manning, an NFL great, has to say, is he really capable of learning from Lane Kiffin? Is he smart enough to realize who he needs to be listening to?
If there ever was a QB at Tennessee that could benefit from the lessons taught by Peyton Manning, it would be Jonathan Crompton.

I usually watch the late west coast game, which is either PAC-10 or WAC. But tonight's interconference matchup between the Rams of Colorado State (MWC) and the Hawkeyes of Idaho? Puh Leeze! If there are still Hawkeye fans lurking, I don't want to give them the satisfaction. So I won't be watching the Idaho Hawkeyes tonight.

mornin' Hotties.....I started this past week thinking this game was a tossup. Realizing the UT injuries and AU fan optimism has convinced me that we have a better than 50-50 chance.

War Eagle, Hottie Hooooooo! It's game day, FINALLY. It's been a long week. After watching Auburn Every Day, I ready to get our swagger back.

8:19 AM
Blogger AUfan said...

The main thing I worry about is UT going out in front early, and then just pounding on Auburn with the running game.

I think it is crucial for Auburn to come out strong early and put some points on the board. If Tennessee has to come from behind, I feel very good about the game.

Regarding the Malzahn-Monte Kiffin matchup- A UT sportswriter implied that Monte Kiffin had a big advantage because he was a former NFL DC, while Malzahn was a former high-school coach. I don't see it happening that way.

In Gus I trust.
