Gene Chizik speaks, 10/4

Hey everyone. We're making a small change here. I'll open with a TOP FIVE element of the weekly breakdown. Those are the FIVE things you really need to know about what Gene Chizik said.

After that, it's small stuff that may or may not interest you.

So here we go:

THE FIVE THINGS
  • On Auburn breaking into the polls: ``The higher the better and all that good stuff. We've only played five games. At this point, it's somewhat insignificant. It only matters where you are in the end of December. All that stuff helps recruiting, but we don't pay a lot of attention to it."

  • On coaching against Bobby Petrino, with whom Chizik served as an Auburn coordinator in 2002: ``He remembers me for x number of months. A large portion of that, we weren't going against each other, but I was around him enough to know he's one of the best in the country."

  • On Auburn's defense surrendering 200+ yards during the fourth quarter against Tennessee: ``When you know your opponent has to score three times to win, you just don't want to give the game away for doing some silly things. Most of the night, I thought we played much better defense that we had previously. The fourth quarter got away from us a little bit. We're not looking at numbers and statistics and all those things."

  • On Eric Smith: ``He's a guy we've got a lot of trust in. He can play two or three (positions) and he plays them well. Our goal is to never take a guy like that and play him on more than two special teams, but he could play on all of them."

  • Chizik said he'll continue to consider using Philip Pierre-Louis on punt returns, but not on offense. Asked if PPL's repaired knee was the sticking point, the coach said: ``That really hasn't been his issue."

THE OTHER STUFF
  • On what he learned about his team at Tennessee: ``It was more verification than anything. The verification was similar to what we learned at home -- that we'll play hard for 60 minutes. It was neat to see there wasn't much a difference in the way we responded. I don't know that there were many revolutionary things we learned. It was more verification."

  • On Auburn's defensive performance: ``I don't know if it was our best or not, but we took some strides in the right direction. I still think we are a work in progress, no question. We have to continue to get better on the defensive side of the ball if we're going to continue to win in October."

  • More on Petrino: ``He's very, very precise. He knows exactly what he wants. He coaches those guys in minute details. He knows how to run the ball. He knows how to throw the ball. He knows what to expect from you defensively."

  • On OL Bart Eddins, who earned his first career start Saturday: ``Really proud of Bart. He's really overcome some health issues. He played with the Saturday night. They didn't just go away. I was proud that he was able to step up and help our football team win."

  • On why Barrett Trotter travels with the varsity: ``We want to keep him around the offense. He does some things with signaling. That's his role on the road."

  • On S Daren Bates: ``He's gotten better every week. He's still so far away from his potential. He's more relaxed. You're a product of what you continually do. The reps are starting to pile up for him."

Ole Miss wasn't very impressive against Vandy. Do you think they were looking ahead? I heard Trahan's name a lot.

Does that mean the punt returns are so bad, PPL can play there, but he can't play on offense because the WR's aren't struggling?

I'm confused.

Blogger Kathy said...

Kiffen impressed with Gus and with Todd's play. He had a lot of good things to say about Chris. I think Chris only made a couple of bad decisions. He sure is cool under pressure. I bet he is sore today.

AUfan, I think that means: PPL is still in trouble, but his probation includes a gig returning punts.

If it were my decision I would say PPL is our punt returner. No, he didn't have a lot of return yards, but he looked very sure handed. Working on the blocking, and our punt return game will look much better.

As for what we learned, the biggest thing is that Todd can handle pressure and he didn't break into small fragments and need to be scooped up off the field when he took some hits. Yes, he made a few bad throws, but he had many more good throws, and a few I considered incredible.

We also learned that our defense is pretty darn solid. Tennessee did make some big plays, but when you look at it in terms of the number of plays, most of the time the defense looked very solid.

We also learned that this offense can control the clock, which was a bit of a surprise. We did a great job of keeping the defense off the field while tiring out that vaunted Vol defense. Yes, they were sucking wind.

5:43 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

I have never seen a defense sucking wind like that, well except maybe last year when Auburn played West Virginia!

The Arkansas game will likely be the biggest test our defense has faced so far. While Tennessee and West Virginia were challenges, it will take a lot of discipline to stop Petrino.

Steve, I was looking at the passing stats on the Foxsports website.

Todd has 12 TD's, 1 INT and has been sacked only 2 times all season. If someone had told me those would be his numbers after 5 games, I would have never believed them.

According to the Opelika news: Freeman played briefly in the first and second quarters but didn’t see the field much at all in the second half. While the defense met, Freeman stood alone on the other end of the sideline. He didn’t really associate with the team much when the offense was on the field.

Did anyone else notice this?

5:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUFan, I am loving it. While I was for Todd being the starter, I am pretty shocked at how well he has done. I was for him mainly because I felt he made good decisions last season and I didn't think we had another QB that could do it. If he had 6 or 7 INTs at this point, his numbers would still look good. It has been one of the biggest surprises of this season.

I'll dispense with the general poll lamentations and focus on a specific representative example of its foul and gangrenous qualities: why is Ole Miss ranked at all, let alone in the top twenty? What exactly have they accomplished this year to distinguish themselves from posers and pretenders, as opposed to convincing (fooling) the majority of preseason pollsters that they are the special? They looked horrible against a mediocre South Carolina team and haven't even competed with a worthy opponent. In my estimation, they represent what is most farsical with the whole ranking system: i.e., it merely perpetuates the speculation from previous weeks and disregards the reality of performance.

6:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, I think that is highly likely. After next season, who knows, but I doubt Malzahn would want to change teams after one season. He has also got a pretty sweet deal at Auburn with a 3 year contract and a ton of support. I wouldn't blame the guy for taking a head coaching gig, but he is in a great situation where he is. He had a bad experience at Arkansas. I think this is light and day from that.

What's a poll?

Auburn is 5-0, that's about all that's important to me at the moment.

7:02 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

You start with a preconceived notion about the teams because of a lack of evidence.

So as the games are played and insight is gleaned, voters then can begin making assessments based on actual performance.

Ole Miss' relative lack of accomplishments explains why I have dropped Ole Miss from 5ish to 15ish.

You may argue that Ole Miss sucks, the coach sucks, the team is worthless, Jevan Snead is a joke, Hardy is overrated, Dexter McCluster couldn't play at Auburn. I still think Ole Miss is a decent team and will be a decent team.

Is a No. 15 ranking indicative of voters being smitten? That's not even the top 10% of FBS teams. That's saying Ole Miss is in the top 15% of all FBS teams and, given the disparity between the various leagues, I think that's about right.

For the polls to be meaningful early on, you have to consider how a team did the previous season, particularly late. Ole Miss was very impressive against Texas Tech, which is why they were ranked highly. South Carolina has proven to be a much better than mediocre team, so that comment seems very ironic. South Carolina has a good team and it is why you see them moving into the polls.

Polls are overrated...winning isn't.

On the topic of The Bull...still waiting to see something from him. I'm guessing he didn't spend a lot of time looking over playbooks and was just an instinctual player for most of his life. Now he's at a level where you have to follow a scheme and he's lost.

This is the first week that semi valid comparisons for poll voting can occur. After next weeks games, pre-conceived/season type valuations should fully give way to actual accomplishments.

The continually growing parity in CFB makes poll voting a nightmare. In addition, the information age allows many teams to adjust and recover from problems quickly, causing early season losses to have less relevance by late season.

7:22 PM

Sensi...80's....yup

7:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It really depends upon who someone has played. Some teams, you get a good idea how good they are early. Others, it takes late into the season. Tennessee is always a great example because the success of their season is usually determined within the first 7 or 8 games.

I would have expected Bama to be a bigger favorite over Ole Miss after their performance against Arkansas. I would have anticipated Bama by 7 or 8 and that they will likely win by at least 2 scores.

As for us, I think we should be a bit more of a dog. Arkansas surprised many with their performance against Texas A&M. Arkansas will have the best offense we have faced.

Flesh Wounds- back when Ole Miss was 4, I had them at 15, and I thought even that was generous. UA-T should destroy them this weekend. Ole Miss needs to step up to the plate and prove they belong with the big boys. As of today, they've proven nothing. I don't hate Ole Miss at all, I just don't think they have yet shown themselves to belong in the top 25.

7:36 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

JGT, I take it by your comments that you agree with my philosophy re: ranking teams during they year.

Namely, you place them based on how good you expect them to be over the course of the entire season. I think most voters (not just in the AP, but in all polls) vote for them based on [a]how good they thought they were at the beginning of the season and [2]how well they played in their most recent game.

I like our way better.

7:38 PM

I think Ole Miss's defense keeps them in the game if Snead can somehow protect the football. Big if though.

Bama's 0-line isn't what it was against Utah last year w/o Smith, but it's still not quite the unit from last year. I know you look at the stats yesterday and say "what?", but UK was kind of manhandling the Tide's running game before turnovers let it get out of hand. Even Arkansas stopped the run a little bit the week before.

Ole Miss has a d-line that can cause trouble for Bama in the running game. I know the Tide are more dynamic this year and McElroy looks better than JPW, but they still need to run the ball for that offense to really click. I'd be surprised if Bama doesn't win on Saturday, but I think the Rebs can make a game of it with the way their defense has been playing.

This excess celebration penalty after touchdowns is getting out of hand.

The one on Green of UGA was totally uncalled for....then they had to call one on LSU as a makeup. That judgemental call probably changed that game's outcome.

Defensive backs and linebackers celebrate more than that when they make a good play.

Auburn will hopefully never get an excessive celebration penalty because we are too busy trying to give the ball to the ref!!!

7:59 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

One more thing on the polls. 60 people from very different areas, with the potential to bring very different opinions vote in the AP. I think the fact that it is an average of their votes makes it pretty close to a representation of the feeling of the sports fan in America. These guys have their hands on the pulse of what is going on, and no one is bigger than the poll.

8:05 PM

missinit,

I've seen those flags fly for defensive backs this year. It's insane. I feel like there's been a flag for that in every game that I've watched this year. As a fan, I'm over it. I like the emotion of the game. For it to affect the outcome of the game makes it worse.

On the Lane Kiffin show, he really sounded like he thought they were in it at the very end. He kind of skipped over the whole deal we were running out the clock and didn't really give it 100% effort to get into the endzone.
If the arkie game has 80 points- I hope we have about 60 of them so I don't need CPR. Offensive shoot outs make me nervous. I'm not used to them.

I said it Saturday, and I'll say it again ... I officiated HS football for 6 years ... I'm a known officials defender.

Those celebration penalty calls were atrocious. The worst I've ever seen. It's bad when an official makes an error in judgment during a play. It's horrible when they misapply a rule, but it's the worst when they arbitrarily enforce a rule that affects the outcome of a game.

I'm not putting all of the blame on the officials. I'm also blaming the league/NCAA. They have told the officials to put an extra emphasis on certain things. UGA's gotten screwed twice this year on game changing personal foul. Once on a georgeous hit late in the OK State game that was in no way excessive anything, and then the thing we saw vs LSU Saturday. That's one team. Who knows how many other close games have been changed this year by similar occurances.

The technical analysis I tried on our team as a stock doesn't bode well for our future. We needed to score more than 41 points to confirm the uptrend. Not only did we fail to confirm the uptrend, but we fell all the way thru the support at 37 down to 26. This is definitely not good. There is no support below, and no limit to how far our stock could drop.

On the bright side, our opponents stock has been confirmed as a dog. It couldn't break thru the resistance at 30, and dropped all the way back to 22. It definitely seems headed back to test support at 13.

Fundamentalists would blame both of these developments on the level of competition, but true technicians say that fundamentals don't matter and everything you need to know is revealed in the charts - the charts never lie. I think pure technicians are mostly morons who eventually lose all of their money.

So the charts say we should beat ARK something like 24-14. I'd take that.

If we could have beaten TN 42-28, then we could make reservations for Atlanta. As it is, we won't likely be in the 80s by the bammer game.

great video compilation by think888! thanks for sharing the link, PF.

I noticed that our [former :-( ] very own Monica is a subscriber to think888, which led me to Monica's youtube videos.

sweet video.

Berry is the real deal, but he definitely got owned a couple of times.

I bought Auburn stock when it was pretty look, so I feel like I have made a pretty good gain on it already. The week before Arkansas is not a good week to buy though. Much more can be lost than can be gained at this game. Wait for the Ole Miss week to buy more stock if you still want to get in on it.

By the way, I went to the game yesterday... and I am pretty sure a couple of Auburn fans I was sitting close to post on al.com.

So you were sitting next to some happy go-lucky types, huh?

notice that on pollspeak, most of the voters that vote sec teams lower than JGT also vote tX USC and other higher....its all a hoax, most vote along party lines

i can't believe anyone has oklahoma ranked above 20. The whole pre season thing should go out the window, people are just trying to support what they said in the pre season by keeping their picks "hangin round".

I love Auburn.

That is all.

Bin, if you can email everyone who voted OK higher and any admit that that is the case, I will agree. I think OK could beat a bunch of teams above them if they played today.

I just came home from the game. Awesome time. Long drive.

Goodnight.

The only polls I don't agree with are the ones that awarded Bama titles they didn't deserve and the one that kept Auburn from playing USC in 2004. Besides that, I like the human element of them. No one voter is bigger than the poll and people make mistakes.

I think we've got a yin/yang thing going. You like to cook. I like to eat. Could there be a perfecter match? I think not.

I have a hard and fast rule about CFB polls:

They're lame.

Think back to the pre-season...many people said Miss State had passed or equaled us in the West.

We beat them.

Almost everyone said Lane Kiffin was a better hire and everyone as praising UT for the hire.

We beat them.

Everyone said Arkansas was a program on the way up and we were a program on the way down.

There is our next chance to prove people wrong.
