Examining the Matchup

Hey everyone. Been a busy day here at HABOTN's Tampa headquarters, where we're writing to fill up the Thursday and Friday sections of the Advertiser.

They'll be chock full'o goodies for you all.

You want a sample? I knew you did.

MATCHUP: Auburn run offense vs. Northwestern run defense
Advantage:

Gene Chizik promised an offense that was built to run and he didn't falter, watching his team average 214 rushing yards per game. The figurehead is tailback Ben Tate, who emerged as one of the Southeastern Conference's top players with a best-case scenario season.

He enjoyed good health, consistent blocking and finished with 1,254 yards. Not bad.

Onterio McCalebb provides an ideal complement when healthy. He was troubled during the final third of the season with a chronic ankle problem, but coaches believe six additional weeks of treatment will give McCalebb the ability to cut inside while moving to his left for the first time in three months.

Northwestern isn't poor against the run by any means. Surviving in the Big 10 Conference requires toughness up front and the Wildcats have plenty with linebackers Quentin Davie and Nate Williams.

They conceded 212 yards to Illinois in mid-November, which was alarming, but held run-prone Wisconsin to a season-low 99 yards a week later.
Still, this is where Auburn thrives. It should continue that trend in Tampa.

MATCHUP: Northwestern run offense vs. Auburn run defense
Advantage:

Is that right? Auburn gets a defensive advantage?

The truth is that fatigue messed with the Tigers' defense more than anything. A thin depth chart was taxed when starters were asked to play at least 60 snaps every week. That left defensive coordinator Ted Roof looking for ways to fix an unfixable problem.

Auburn's defense played well against Alabama, providing a clear affirmation that Roof has the ability to scheme opponents. Now he has a defense that is healthy and rested for the first time since early September.

The Wildcats are committed to offensive balance, but that doesn't mean it’s a healthy thing. Quarterback Mike Kafka earns more carries than anyone on his team. While he's a fine runner for a quarterback, he's not a big-play threat.

Northwestern doesn't have any. Coach Pat Fitzgerald rotates several tailbacks into featured roles, but none have distinguished themselves. The team averages 3.1 yards per rush.

Auburn averages 5.

MATCHUP: Auburn passing offense vs. Northwestern pass defense
Advantage:

Chris Todd has enjoyed a fine senior season. He's made plenty of good decisions and, in the end, has been at least a serviceable option for offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.

He is not a game-breaking element.

In fact, it's now obvious how serious Malzahn is about featuring the run. Auburn dedicated 61 percent of its plays toward the ground game this season. That's not necessarily a knock on Todd -- he finished with 21 touchdown passes, after all -- but passing is a surprisingly peripheral part of the Tigers' offensive personality.

Northwestern has the pieces to undermine Todd. Four players have at least a pair of picks this season -- Walt McFadden is Auburn's only multi-interception player -- and the pass rush is at least ample.

Defensive end Corey Wootten, who struggled with knee and ankle injuries for most of the season, is expected to be fully healthy in Tampa. He was an outstanding rusher throughout the 2008 season and knows this game provides an opportunity to silence doubters.

Northwestern conceded yards during the regular season, but some of that was due to Fitzgerald's willingness to take chances. Will that be enough to confuse Todd? My guess is yes.

MATCHUP: Northwestern pass offense vs. Auburn pass defense
Advantage:

Mike Kafka is a very good quarterback.

He isn't remarkably powerful. He's not particularly fast. What makes Kafka so valuable is that he brings life to the Wildcats' offense. The senior understands Northwestern's short-pass system and makes it work without many snags.

He's accurate. He doesn't make many mistakes.

Kafka also has enough guile to add another dimension to the team's rushing attack. He finished the season with 465 rushing yards, but yardage lost due to sacks -- he was hit behind the line 25 times this season -- dramatically diminished Kafka's overall numbers. Still, that duality affects opposing defenses. Simply put, Kafka is a threat to do anything at any moment.

Auburn pass defense isn't remarkable. McFadden provides good coverage at cornerback, but the Tigers are inexperienced at safety. The team's other cornerback, Neiko Thorpe, was bust-prone in October and November.

If Antonio Coleman and Antoine Carter can generate pressure along the edge, Kafka could be marginalized. That has happened more often that expected; Northwestern has allowed 29 sacks this season.

MATCHUP: Special teams
Advantage:

Auburn's work on special teams hasn't exactly been memorable, but there have been bright spots. Kicker Wes Byrum doesn't get the recognition he deserves for hitting 14 of his 15 attempts this season.

His only miss was a 46-yarder at Tennessee.

Demond Washington also looks like a find on kickoff return. His touchdown against Georgia was memorable. Who knew he had that much speed?

Auburn's coverage teams are putrid.

Northwestern is a little better with its coverages, but the difference is nominal. Both teams have terrible punt-return groups. It's hard to find teams that even approach Auburn's 4.5 yards per punt return, but the Wildcats clock in at 6.6.

It comes down to Byrum and Northwestern's Stefan Demos, who is an average kicker and a below-average punter.

MATCHUP: Coaching
Advantage:

Chizik has been a surprise.

It's difficult to know how much influence he has on the things we all see on game day. Coaches don't talk about it. Chizik certainly doesn't talk about it. One thing is clear: Auburn's staff works together well.

The offense has been much better than expected. Aside from missteps against Kentucky and LSU, things have progress. The defense is troubled, no doubt, but Roof doesn't appear to be the problem. He needs more players.

Special teams have been an issue, but even that problem seems to be less critical these days.

Northwestern has improved under Fitzgerald, who played linebacker for the Wildcats' 1995 Rose Bowl team. They're sound on defense and don't rely on trickery to compete despite rigorous academic standards akin to Vanderbilt.
Still, Auburn has a remarkable offense.

That's a big reason why the Outback Bowl selected Auburn. This offense is unique in some ways, generates plenty of yards and excitement.

MATCHUP: Intangibles
Advantage:

Both of these programs consider themselves on the upswing. Northwestern has been a bottom-half team in its league for generations, but has gained the ability to become competitive more often.

Auburn bottomed out last season. Chizik and his staff have changed almost everything about the program and created an excitement that hasn't existed since 2004. Though the team's record is only two wins better than a year ago, there's a sense that the Tigers are on the cusp of bigger achievements.

Is it real? Is it hype?

A win in Tampa could provide more meaningful data. Players are surprisingly eager to consolidate progress they believe was made in losses to Georgia and Alabama. They're looking at this game as a way to re-establish national credibility.

Northwestern is a pretty good team in a pretty good league.

Auburn believes it's better than that.

MATCHUP: Overall
Advantage:

The SEC has the best defenses around.

NFL rosters tell the story. They're loaded with guys from this league because it produces more professional-grade defenders than any league.
Auburn's offense has broken through against several SEC defenses this season. It's legitimate.

Northwestern ended its season with better defensive numbers, but Auburn may be different now. A strong performance against Alabama seemed to demonstrate significant improvement and the addition of outside linebacker Eltoro Freeman, who was out with two injuries, will give the Tigers more power in Tampa.

Auburn really wants this game.

Its offense is most outstanding element of this game.

Ben Tate is the best offensive player in this game.

Antonio Coleman is the best defensive player in this game. Auburn has plenty of advantages. Now the question becomes: Can it capitalize?

My guess is yes.

Geeze Jay, since I prioritize HABOTN over bowl games I stopped watching the finish to the Bowling Green/Idaho game. Apparently Idaho scored late, went for two, and got it, and won the game. Simply incredible, or someone at ESPN is messing with me.

I like the way the Oregon coach handled the Blount situation with the indefinite suspension. Bringing him back when he thought he had learned his lesson rather than at some arbitrary date makes good sense. Also, if I were a player, I would much rather know how long I was suspend for up front. It is a tough punishment to not know if you are going to ever get back on the field.

7:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I think we beat Northwestern because of multiple reasons. I believe our defense is much better than they appeared during the season because of lack of depth. Also, the speed that Tate mentioned will be a factor. And one of the biggest factors will be our offensive line.

I do wish Tate hadn't mentioned Northwestern being slow, though. No need to give them anything to get the pumped up.

Just to get an idea of what kind of monster Cam Newton is, he is about as fast as Kodi Burns. Burns runs a 4.50, while newton runs a 4.53. What's the big difference? Well, Newton is nearly 4 inches taller and outweighs Kodi by about 40 pounds. If he is an accurate passer, he can be scary good.

8:29 PM

Newton can be a difference maker. I think we'd be OK without him, but I'd much rather he be on our sideline than MSU's next fall.

If Newton can just pass as good as Todd, he will be scary good. Can you imagine him running the read option? From the video I have seen, he doesn't exactly run the ball like Chris Todd.

I agree that the championship says a lot. If he comes, he's the most likely starter.

Newton is ranked a 5* and the #1 JUCO prospect according to rivals. Last season in JUCO he completed 60% of his passes(204-336)for 2,833 yards with 22 TD's and only 4 INT's. He was the #1 duel threat QB and a 5* out of high school. He is a much better passer than Todd.

If he is a lot better than Todd passing the ball, he could be a Heisman candidate. It is hard to imagine that combination of passing and running all in one package. Even Tebow isn't an exceptional passer.

22 TDs with 4 ints says a lot.

Having a QB that's a threat to run will help our backs.

Todd isn't exceptional, but he is a solid QB, but not a runner. I like Todd in terms of his decision making and his ball placement. I would call him a good manager of the offense.

As for Newton, I call someone like that a weapon. If he is as good at running as advertised you won't see a wildcat QB coming in.

In his video, he reminds me of some great runningbacks when he hits the secondary. You look at the DBs and they aren't eager to tackle him. It may be because he is as fast as them but out weighs them by 50 or 60 pounds. They have the same look as DBs trying to tackle Walker or Bo in the secondary. They are hesitant and want to slow him down until help arrives.

I really shouldn't get this excited about someone who is not a proven starter, but this guy has a lot of potential.

Nothing is certain yet, and even if he signs, it isn't certain he will ever make the field. I just like the possibilities. That is assuming Rollison gets out of the doghouse.

USC is a good example of how playing an inexperienced highly regarded QB can kill you. Supposedly the guy is very talented, but experience means a lot in college football.

My guess is that if Gus asked Chizik if he could sleep with Chizik's wife, he would consider it. No, he might not agree, but he would consider it. Gus has been that important.

Think about what Malzahn did. He took basically the sample players from 2008 the looked so offensive as an offense, and made them one of the better offenses in the NCAA. I think we moved up nearly 100 spots in the rankings. That is remarkable.

9:46 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The only players new for 2009 that I would call major contributors were Lunchinkitchen and FAH. Other than that, it was mainly the same players.

Well, let's be honest. Chris Todd was basically a brand new player without a bum shoulder.

Jay, what are your thoughts on this staff staying together through the offseason... Do you see any assistants leaving? Was the Thigpen interview with Urban a rumor???
Thanks in advance

OK - here's the scoop. Chad Froechtenicht, Cam Newton's good friend, joined Auburn Tiger Paws group as a fan on Facebook, and said the decision is imminent. He's rumored as a walk-on at AU. So the new direct info source on football, Facebook, has spoken.

Maybe Tyrick will change his profile message and we'll get more news.

On that note - good night.

Sorry I said Briles, Sumlin, and Fedora earlier. Take out Fedora and add in Tuberville and Venables(DC at OU)

Just read the Len Pasquarelli piece on Cadillac that Jet posted earlier. Good for Lac.

But it seems that Pasquarelli isn't really familiar with Lac's style. He says b/c of his injuries, Lac has lost some of his speed and his more of a slasher/power runner now.

That's the way Lac has always been. He's certainly not slow and his feet are amazingly quick, but he was never a burner. RonnieB was faster than Lac. Lac's slashing, power style is what made him a special back to begin with, even more so given his body type.

At any rate, great to see Carnell doing what he's doing this season.

Newton may end up being something special, but we got a long way to fo before that happens.

In those films I saw a powerful athlete that outmanned some JUCO players. I didn't see any accurate passes to tightly covered receivers and I never saw Newton through to the 3rd or 4th WR.

CN has a powerful arm, but routinely threw off of his back foot. He will pass better than Kodi(who couldn't), but doesn't have the good passing fundamentals of Rollison.

Before we annoint the guy, let's see if he can learn the O and make decisions other than taking off on a run.

10:26 PM

I only saw a small amount of Lac's film. He looked like he is completely back to full abilities.

Wow, didn't see any of the AZ-NU game, but saw where Zona had a whopping 37 net yards with 7 minutes left in the game. Finished with 109, but still 0 points.

That's a pretty fair defensive performance by the Huskers.

So I go out of town and you folks blow up with the Newton thing and the Malzahn thing.

My mom says don't worry about the malzahn thing. She also said if Newton comes to AU, other SEC teams should worry more about AU, if he is the starter.

Reporting from Disney, I am out.

E-Bro, you are dead on with Caddy. He is very quick and suprisingly powerful, but Ronnie Brown was the speedster and even more powerful. What really made Caddy special was his quickness. He would juke people out of their socks. That, combined with surprising power and durability for his size, made him special.

As for Ronnie Brown, give me 22 Ronnie Browns and I win a national championship. He was pretty much a do it all guy.

Looks like there is just a small chance of rain for the Hotties during the game tomorrow. This has sure been a wet football season. That old la nina.

Hopefully there are still a few of us "unfortunates" left on the computer for tomorrow's game.

I find it very interesting the Mike "WTF" Leach now has players coming out announcing they are glad he is gone. This, to me, seems to indicate there was more wrong there than we new. Players don't hate a coach for working them hard. If they did, Pat Dye would have been one of the most hated coaches around. Players hate coaches that don't respect them.
