Freestyling from The Bay
Hey everyone. So I'm still stuck in this hotel room. It's nice to have a view of Tampa Bay and all, but it's really just me and the computer. Still.
Why not write more?
I'll take a few minutes each afternoon (pre-Outback Bowl) to pontificate on some Auburn topic. It'll be freestyle, stream-of-consciousness stuff.
So on that note...
Walt McFadden is underappreciated.
Sure, he's an all-conference cornerback. Sure, he was the most reliable element of a defense that was unstable for most of the season. Sure, he used free time to groom some of the Tigers' young defensive backs and share the lessons taught to him by his predecessors.
What you may not know is how valuable McFadden has been in other ways.
Talking with reporters isn't easy. Questions sometimes get difficult, answers become confusing. A balance exists between what players want to say and what they should say. Identifying that balance and manipulating it comfortably turns a normal player into a ambassador.
And that's exactly what McFadden became: An ambassador.
The senior on Tuesday was awarded the inaugural "Good Guy Award" from writers who cover Auburn on a daily basis. After years of watching players duck interviews in the craziest ways -- Kodi Burns has nothing on David Copperfield when it comes to escaping a closed elevator -- we wanted to reward the guys who take the time to stand up when it's not easy.
McFadden did it time and again. When Auburn was askew during the 2008 season, he strolled in for his weekly powwows with the same enthusiasm he exhibits these days. If stories about the Tigers' defense were out of style, McFadden adapted by discussing anyone on the team.
He is a social guy. He pays attention. The comments he provided about teammates were insightful, thoughtful and often novel.
All this from a guy who was a sullen mess during his first season at Auburn.
He has our respect. He deserves your as well.

Good job, SS
Phew, I thought Norm might come in and try and steal our thunder late.
west Virginia finished their season very strong. They played Cinci very close and then beat Pitt and Rutgers. Their most disappointing loss was to South Florida. We beat them early when our offense was clicking pretty well. I don't know that we could beat them now.
My guess is that the second half color commentary will involve little focus on the game and a lot of focus on FSU in the 90s.
I think we could beat them now. We ended on a bad note but we played some good teams. Yeah UGA kind of had a blah year, but they hung with everyone outside of UF and they've never been devoid of talent.
From more than one account James was lazy and had a poor attitude. He deserved what he got. The only reason this is a big story is because he is a baby and his daddy is on ESPN.
I didn't mean we could beat West Virginia now as a knock on us. We are also improved and I think we are much better defensively, but Cinci and Pitt are two very good teams. Nearly beating Cinci and taking down Pitt are very impressive to me. Rutgers seems to be a bit better than I thought, too.
In terms of TT, I have to agree with Jet, even in terms of Chaz Ramsey. I do think Nall is a very good offensive line coach, but I think he screwed up big time in his treatment of Ramsey, if what I have read is true. As an offensive coordinator, Nall is a great offensive line coach, but when a great coach has to go by what doctors say. If not, the consequences can be very bad, which is what I see happening with Leach.
The AD at TT doesn't like Leach anyway. Leach should have gone by the doctor's word on the concussion. If he really was trying to shame the kid, he made a fatal mistake. Great offensive mind, but a huge wiff in terms of decision making.
I think the Ramsey deal and the James deal are a little different. From what I have read it seems as though James might have been milking this concussion thing so that he didn't have to do what his coaches were asking. It's like the little cry babies in gym class saying they have a note from their doctor.
CHB, that may be true but when you are coach you have to take the cautious approach with major injuries such as this and a concussion is actually more dangerous than a back injury.
The NASDAQ has been evacuated because of a suspicious van in the area. Yes, we live in interesting times.
How would you like to be that car owner?
so, has this sissy released his medical records showing how they arrived at the diagnosis of concussion? When did his coconut get clobbered? A nice quiet dark room sounds pretty relaxing to me.
I was thinking the same thing. Apparently it has been parked there 48 hours. It is possible that it is just broken down, which would be hilarious. I have seen one report that it had a fake police sticker on it, but I am not sure what the heck that means.
Jet, I am still chuckling over the "Raising Arizona" quote on the previous page. Nice one!
My guess is that Leach will be fired and my hope is that he becomes a color commentator. I think we all would enjoy it.
The van belongs to Mike Leach to deflect the TTU issue.
My dream would be a debat between Leach and Holtz. What is the over/under on how long it would take Leach to call Holtz a sissy?
Tiger enters rehab for sex addiction.
Come on man.
Cool pick, AU. My niece actually gave her father in law one of those leg lamps for Christmas:)
Thank you! That was during the pinnacle of our storm last week.
I was triple dog dared to stick my toungue on it but didn't
Tiger Woods? And the question? Name someone who is more screwed than Mike Leach?
Both literally and figuratively.
Leach fired! Shocker!
Rivals is saying Ken Adams is no longer committed to UT and they are no longer in the running. It is down to Auburn, LSU, and North Carolina.
Leach is a goner. Amazing.
Sorry to have missed the page flip. I was outside pulling down Christmas lights from a Crepe Myrtle. Nice job boys and girl. I have no issue with you tending to a page flip in my absence. I do have an issue with the direct and blatant mention by name of a former coach. We've been over this people. This is against the rules. My rules. Reference said coach (really, I'm thinking of 3 particular oft-mentioned former coaches) indirectly using whatever descriptor you'd like but never by their proper name.
So says Norm
Yes, it is true. The mad coach will be looking for a new job. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
That's on me Norm. I asked a question and it kind of seemed to be the unintentional answer.
And I would like to congratulate Texas Tech on the timing of the firing, just before they were suppose to go to court to argue if he should be allowed to coach the bowl game. Now, that is the type of ironic irony I like.
I figured they would have waited to see if they would have won the case and then fired him.
But then again, why delay the innevitable.
based on the info I've seen, and obviously that is only a tiny part of the whole story, I think TTU acted stupidly.
I personally like Leach. So he is a little weird....who doesn't like pirates?
On a side note, Leach was formerly a lawyer, so that is pretty ironic in itself.
I'm with THT on this issue. I'm not that old but I think kids these days need to toughen up. There is all this politically correct crap these days and it's making everyone freaking cry babies.

I do kind of like leach in a car wreck kind of way. He is a good example of a great mind that isn't well suited for being a head coach.
I guess the hearing is rendered moot, but Leach will not be mute.
For example: When I was coming up just playing little league sports, the coaches would make us run non stop. If we made a mistake we ran, If we complained we ran, if we were late we ran, if our stomach hurt we ran. No days try making a kid run laps or foul poles and watch what happens.
sorry for the multiple posts. There was nothing in this window when I hit refresh.
Anyhooo, I hope Leach takes TTU to the cleaners. TTU is no longer my 2nd favorite Texas team.
coach tubs on wmsp
I like that one Steve..."car wreck kind of way"
As stated earlier, I believe messing with a kid who has had a concussion is asking for trouble.
But the episode isn't about Adam James or tool sheds. It's about motive, means and opportunity.
The bosses at Texas Tech had decided they had had enough of Mike Leach, so they had motive to get rid of him.
Adam James provided the means and the opportunity to do just that and save $800,000 in the process.
Who does TTU think they are going to replace Leach with? Lubbock is a terrible place to live and recruit to. Leach will go to another school and be fine. TTU will return to a sub-par program.
Kiffikin has that same Leach kind of problem. When you are a head coach you don't make off the cuff kind of comments. You are calculating in terms of what you say and the effect it will have. I do believe it is why Chizik is so terse when discussing player injuries and suspensions.
dan dan, I suppose it depends upon what the goal of TT is. They are a university first, not a football program.
By the way, I did guess that Leach would be fired early in this thread, but I had no clue it would happen this quickly. I am pretty shocked.
ESPN reporting TTech has hired a new head coach for football...Bobby Knight.
CNN is saying that Leach will sue the university. Man, this is getting juicy.
This should become a real circus since Leache's lawyer seems to be as big a fruit cake as he is. I hope they show the proceedings on ESPN.
There is a lesson to be learned here. You don't get in a pissing contest with your employer when you are armed with a water pistol and they have a fire hose. It just isn't a good idea.
They had to fire him today because he would be owed $800,000 tomorrow, per his contract.
After last year fuss with the administration, this had bad ending written all over it.
He would have been much wiser to go duck hunting. That always works.
Thanks for the enlightening info sfc. For the rest of you who, maybe like sfc, did not realize it, I was referring to the TTU football program as returning to sub-par.
Given that TTU acted stupidly, I suppose the White House should invite Leach, his AD, Adam James and Craig James in for a beer.
dan dan, I was just saying the goal of the university in firing leach wasn't based upon the record of the football team. That is secondary. As fans, we place a higher priority on that than we should at times.
I am glad there are no distractions prior to the Valero Alamo Bowl so that the student-athletes get to enjoy their award for their hard work.
Oh wait...
This the best part...
The school handed a termination letter to Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, just minutes before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock courtroom for a hearing on the coach's suspension.
Litagate that Liggett!!
Do you think someone said that?
Personally, I am wanting to see someone interview Mike "WTF" Leach. My guess is that he is still trying to grasp the size of the truck that just hit him, although I am sure he realizes that AD was driving it.
Or someones "fat little girlfriend"
I guess I think its a "cutting off your nose" situation with the TTU admin. Unless the new Tubs to TTU rumor comes true, I don't think they will get a coach on par with Leach, and their fball program along with the revenue it produces will diminish.
Hehehe, now that there is funny.
My opinion is influenced by the fact that I had a concussion that required bedrest for five days, and I felt awful the whole time. Darkness helps, but the idea of having to stand for long periods of time with even a mild concussion is ridiculous.
If I had been the parent, for the kid's sake, I probably would have not have filed a formal complaint. Better to withdraw him from the football team (can you do that?) and let him transfer next semester. The situation has set him up for ridicule.
I wonder what Chris Todd thinks of all this.
dan dan, football revenue is a small part of a university, although a large portion of the athletic budget. As for getting a coach that wins like Leach, I seriously doubt it. From what I have read, Lubbock isn't exactly a dream place to be.
I visited Lubbock years ago and its not. The football stadium is the tallest thing out there, including the trees. Dust bowl, comes to mind.
Is Jay G. Tate gathering all this good information for an article in the Advertiser. If not he is missing a great story.
In another twist or Irony, Texas Tech appears to be primarily a medical college. Go figure.
Tubs to Lubbock. HA! They just had a BLIZZARD out there.
I have never come close to Lubbock. I have been around the Houston/Galvistan area, but that is about it.
If the mean temp is not 72 degrees Tubs ain't going.
Hmmm, I hadn't thought of Tubs to Texas Tech, but it would be interesting. Somehow I don't see it, but he mike like the lack of pressure there.
You can't get close to Lubbock unless you are trying. It is 20 miles past the middle of nowhere.
I mentioned the Tubs to TT rumor because he was just on 740 and the host mentioned it to him and he didn't say no. So the host, after the interview, started the rumor.
Eight wins a year is what they expect in Lubbock.
Perfect for Tubs.
Absolutely perfect.
Personally, I didn't like Houston. It was way too flat for me. Lubbock is a long way from it, so I assume the area is a lot different.
That and recruiting is a breeze, he can stay within that radius he always talked about. If Tub doesn't end up there, I'll be shocked.
Yea, CTT was usually good for about 9 or 10, but the first and last season put him at about 8.5 if I remember correctly.
We are still only hearing one side of this whole thing..the James' side. You all know the saying there are three sides to every story.
Houston flat? Houston looks like Colorado high next to Lubbock
The weather in Lubbock could make it a no go. I am also not sure they could pay that kind of salary. My guess is it would take a couple of million a year to catch Tuberville's attention.
everything's a breeze in Lubbock. The wind blows non-stop. SFC - it's flat like Houston, just 3,000 feet higher. And without the trees or humidity.
Of course, since I don't expect Tubs to get a BCS job, I don't expect him to get the job at Texas Tech.
I would imagine Sexton is churning up his media campaign right now to have Tubs as the front-runner.
CHB, that is a very good point. Leach didn't seem to get any due process here.
Jet, I seriously doubt Tubs would take anything other than a BCS job, or a high profile independent. Nobody else would be able to afford him.
that's why he'll remain unemployed. BTW, is he still employed by the AU president?
Only until we pay him part 2 of his buyout.
Got that right, Sean.
I wish I could get paid for screwing up and getting fired/resign.
Tubs is not exactly unemployed. He is still on special task at Auburn and working in the media. That along with 5mil in the bank he could hold out for a while. But the longer he is out of it the less chance he has of getting a good coaching job.
Jet and SteveFC should have a wager on whether or not a particular duck hunter winds up coaching again. Further details should include a timeline and conference specifics (heck, throw in ND just to be nice). Perhaps the proceeds from said wager would go directly to a particular charity.
Wait...this is like deja-vu all over again.
Someone will eventually go after Tubs, but you won't get one of the SEC's winningest coaches for less than 2 million.
Almost 100 comments in 2 hours on a slow news day. That's pretty impressive! Just wait 'til basketball season really gets cranking...oh yeah, nevermind.
Next comes cruitin' season.
Well between Tiger going to rehab for sex addiction (c'mon Tiger the rest of us dudes deal) and Mike "The Pirate of the Tool Shed" Leach there's all kinds of fun stuff flying around.
Combine that with a Tuberville convo and you got a heckuva a commenting day.
I believe we're smack in the middle of 'Krootin season.
By the way, should the evil empire expire due to Boom laying the smack down, those of you in Bama may want to keep all of your loved ones close.
My biggest question with cruitin' is if we will pick up a few surprises on signing day. If so, we could easily end up with a top 5 class and possibly the best cruitin' class Auburn has ever had.
Definitely keep the dogs locked up.
Steve, I think we'll be in for a pleasant signing day.
A 5.9 earthquake has hit near the border of Mexico and California.
Tuberville said that once ... oh ... wait ... he said...
PHEASANT SIGNING DAY.
Pleasant Pheasant signing day?
unlike last year, if we have any surprises on signing day, they won't be good surprises.
Do we have any Turtles in the group?
Okay, I guess it's not that slow of a news day. I'm just not that interested in the Leach or Tiger stories. Now if it starts looking very likely that Tuberville is going to TT (they might just take him for his initials), then I'll be somewhat more interested.
Nobody calls me Tommy, man. It's The Tub or Tubber or Your Tubbness or Tubberewski.
Hoops talk …
Auburn is a scintillating 156 in the Sagarin Ratings.
Our victories are over teams rated: 111, 114, 278, 335, 126, 205 and 269
Our losses are to teams rated: 67, 147, 82, 205, 32, 152,
Among SEC teams, we are 11th.
For Lebo, this is not good.
Fear the Turtle?
Fear the Gopher!
ehyou - how about "Dude"?
Afternoon folks...
FSJ! I'm glad to see you escaped.
Where I come from no one would willingly call themselves Dude...but this guy's a little different.
Escaped what?
Bryce?
No, yesterday you popped in for a minute and I said something like...
Glad to see you, FSJ. I thought Mike Leach had locked you in closet.
...well after that you didn't say anything so I feared the worst.
New years day. Traditions come and traditions go. For the first time in 55 years I will not be sitting down to a Blackeye Peas and Turnipgreens dinner. This was a tradition for the Digger family during the entire 55 years of marriage. With Mrs Digger gone and me being in Tampa for a Bowl game I will indeed miss it. I will enjoy being among friends and watching an Auburn victory (I hope).
I've watched nothing but library movies for 2 months. Tonight it's North to Alaska & Blue Hawaii.
No Country for Old Men last night. I don't understand the bad reviews, it was very good.
Digger - I'd bet you could scare up such a meal with some new Hottie friends if you were so inclined. That could possibly be the start of a new tradition.
ehyou - my review of that movie is incomplete since it put me to sleep.
Oh...since you brought up Leach...
My two cents...
Craig James is about to be blacklisted as a broadcaster, IMO.
Just for some Crutin' info.
The UA AA practice is on ESPNU
digger,
If you want we can meet at Pruett's when you get back and see if they have some blackeyed peas and greens...
Then we can fight over Alabama and Auburn.
unbelievable that Tech fires LEach. I think they should be prepared to write a big check.
Norm...
I highly recommend another (earlier) chance.
Norm I will see if any of the Hotties are interested, that sounds like a good idea.
FSJ I will take you up on that. Pruett's use to have some good ones.
I would love some black-eyed peas and cornbread on New Years Day! ...in front of the TV while I watch the Rose Bowl.
asfkljasdfkl
THT I am sure we can find a TV but where can we get the blackeyedpeas?
i don't eat asfkljas... too spicy for me.
good question, digger. We'll have to work on that.
It sounds like the reason Texas Tech fired Leach was partially so they wouldn't have to right him a check. Apparently they are saying he violated his contract, which basically means "no soup for you", I mean check.
IS that made from goat cheese?
I was askinf about
asfkljasdfkl
as;ldkfj you too, Michael.
For the raslin fans, "Pro wrestling legend 'Dr. Death,' Steve Williams, dies of throat cancer at 49". Don't know Dr. Death myself.
So for those watching at home:
Texas Tech fired a coach with the following accomplishments:
-never had a losing season
-never missed a bowl
-has a winning bowl record
-shared a division title with OU/UT
-had an 11 win season a year ago.
Also for raslin fans, Bret "the Hitman" Hart will be hosting Raw next Monday, the first time he will have associated with WWE since Vince McMahon screwed him over a decade ago.
I haven't watch this stuff in ten years, but consider the DVR to be set.
For what it's worth, the TxTech prez, Guy Bailey, is a bammer and a vol grad.

Tylerson just got a call that someone wants to see the student condo. He's off to show it now. Fingers crossed please! I have no doubts it will sell, but would love for it to be sooner than later!
E-Bro, that is actually very interesting. I don't folow raslin closely, but I have heard of the Montreal Screw Job. It is pretty famous.
Not to mention:
- 4 seasons completed with team ranked in the Top 25
- 19–11 record against in-state conference rivals Baylor, Texas, and Texas A&M
- 2008 AP Big 12 Coach of the Year[29]
- 2008 Big 12 Coach of the Year[30]
- Coached 1 Fred Biletnikoff Award (Best Wide Receiver) winner: Michael Crabtree (two-time winner)
- Coached 1 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (Best Senior Quarterback) winner: Graham Harrell
- Coached 1 Mosi Tatupu Award (Best Kick Returner) winner: Wes Welker
- Coached 3 Sammy Baugh Trophy (Outstanding Quarterback) winners: Kliff Kingsbury, B.J. Symons, and Graham Harrell
- More than 150 NCAA, Big 12 and school records broken as Texas Tech's head coach[51]
Good luck Cincy.
Steve Williams wasn't just a pro-wrestling legend.
The guy was an all Big 8 lineman and a four time heavyweight All American Wrestler at Oklahoma.
Thanks RK. I hadn't heard of the guy.
For those planning a new year's diet....
We live in interesting times.
"Police defuse molotov cocktail found near Homeland Security, immigration offices in Philadelphia; man sought"
ehyou,
I remember my grandmother using AYDS about 40 years ago!
Steve Williams also teaches a Concrete class in the Building Science Dept.
Williams was a legit tough guy, he got the Dr. Death nickname at Oklahoma when he broke his nose during a tournament and taped it up and continued.
His senior year he finished runner up to Bruce Baumgartner in the NCAA championships, and a lot of people thought had he focued just on wrestling in college and not split time with football he would have been a candidate for an 84 or 88 gold medal in the Olympics.
Bret Hart on RAW? Wow, never thought I would see that.
Believe it Michael. It's happening.
I may even watch.
only 7 more hours at work and I can go home and pack!!! Only 13.5 hours til we leave for the airport!!!
GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bret Hart doesn't wrestle any longer, correct?
I don't have cable at the moment, so I will have to check the internets tomorrow for the rundown
With the whole Leach thing, I almost wonder if this is a publicity stunt?
James' father works for ESPN who recently discovered the attention they can garner from coverage of the Tiger scandal. So now they proposition James with a payment to get Leach fired and flex the media muscle.
I just checked their main website, and so many headlines are trying to stir up mud. You'd think it'll become even more of this with all these segmented cities sites.
I believe if Tuberville wants a BCS job, TTU is probably his last, best chance.
Unless it comes out that Leach did something truly inhumane (at least moreso than what has been reported thus far), he should be able to sit out a year and land a decent job at a lesser BCS program in time for the 2011 season.
I'm specifically thinking of Maryland, Illinois, or even Colorado would be good places for a guy like Leach. . .not that there are any guys like Leach, other than Leach himself.
The ESPN Dothan site is amazing.
Some of the Tigers will wear white shoes with Orange trim and a side message of "War Eagle". They're wearing them with high navy blue socks. That's a look I would normally expect to see in a Florida gift shop, but after watching HS football highlight films I think it may be the new cool. I like it a lot better than the current all black look.
If the kid's name was Adam Jones, it would have been leaked to ESPN and gotten the same coverage because my sense is that the AD at Texas Tech was looking for a reason to get rid of Leach, who he doesn't like.
It's not like Myers' is bowing to political correctness. After all, this is the guy who hired Bob Knight.
Adam James was placed under Gerald Myers' Christmas tree all wrapped up with a neat little bow.
Tuberville shouldn't have a problem landing a BCS gig. The big question would be if he really wants to. He certainly doesn't need the money.
I agree with that Jet...
Tech wanted to fire Leach and jumped on this "gift" as their best shot.
I bet they end up having to pay him some money in the end.
Jet, I do agree that the Texas Tech was waiting for Leach to give him a reason. He apparently got the proof he need and moved on it quickly.
I doubt Colorado would touch Leach, since they have had their NCAA troubles. Some like Illinois or Maryland would make sense.
I do view the Leach situation as similar to Bobby Knight. Nobody doubted Knight was a good coach, but there weren't many schools looking to inherit a headache.
puppet hour!!!! aaaahhhh!!!!
I think there are puppets loose at TT.
Worst case scenario is that they have to write him a check for $2.5 million. His buyout was $500k per year remaining. They avoided the $800k with the dismissal today, which would have surely occurred whether Leach had sought an injunction or not.
Correction ...
Just read where S. Mandel says the buyout would have been $1.6 (400k for 4 years left)
I wouldn't expect to see Leach with a "will coach for food" anytime soon. The guy is very intelligent. He just isn't politically correct.
EverydayshouldbeSaturday link to the Texas Tech fun ...
"Did you order the Code Shed?!"
digger - 2.0 has been searching Tampa for blackeyed peas & greens. I'm hoping she'll find us some.
If y'all want to stop by B'ham on your way home from Tampa, I'll have a big mess of black eyed peas with ham and cornbread.
For puppet hour I'd like to show up.
'bout time, Harrison
Harrison,
Where do you go when it's not puppet hour?
Welcome back, Harrison.
sorry guys. been gone for a while, then work's been crazy busy.
Cincy- i usually spend that time in the bathroom
somebody had to spend 10 days in Hawaii and make sure it didn't sink and it's still super warm there
Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Glad you survived it in Hawaii!
I thought you looked a bit more tan, Harrison. What was the funnest thing you did and where was the best meal?
Whew, that scared me Cincy! You asked Harrison a very dangerous question, but he managed to come up with a rated PG response.
Btw, if we don't get a post from SFC pretty soon, he is in danger of falling below 30% of all the posts on this thread.
Sansei sushi was the best sushi I have ever had by far. Probably the best thing I ate all week. We didn't make it to Roy's
So many things left undone, we want to go back
That was confusing. Anyway, SFC now stands at 27% of all the posts on this page.
i have a mustache line from all the sun
Do you know what sansei sushi is made out of, Harrison? You guessed it: poop.
Mike Leach will be fine, regardless of what happens. He has to have numerous job opportunities. I mean, who would you rather see as the new judge on American Idol, Ellen Degeneris or Mike Leach. With Leach, I wouldn't miss an episode.
Time to call in Norm.
He was tardy last time.
Well crap Michael. I guess i got suckered in by the beauty of Hawaii. Plus they promised me it wasn't poop. To top that off their sign said "our sushi actually made from fish, not poop"
Harrison - Did you tell Hawaii to "Stay Classy"?
Someone send up the Norm Signal (looks like the Bat Signal, but with an eye-patch).
Calling Norm! Arrrrgh!
Here I'm is!
Spent the last hour putting away the Christmas decoration boxes.
Boy, that Roosevelt Franklin was a one or two flip wonder, wasn't he?
Wow that actually worked!
Who dat gone flip dat page?
And racing around the driveway with the future 4*.
