Freestyling from The Bay

Hey everyone. So I'm still stuck in this hotel room. It's nice to have a view of Tampa Bay and all, but it's really just me and the computer. Still.

Why not write more?

I'll take a few minutes each afternoon (pre-Outback Bowl) to pontificate on some Auburn topic. It'll be freestyle, stream-of-consciousness stuff.

So on that note...

Walt McFadden is underappreciated.

Sure, he's an all-conference cornerback. Sure, he was the most reliable element of a defense that was unstable for most of the season. Sure, he used free time to groom some of the Tigers' young defensive backs and share the lessons taught to him by his predecessors.

What you may not know is how valuable McFadden has been in other ways.

Talking with reporters isn't easy. Questions sometimes get difficult, answers become confusing. A balance exists between what players want to say and what they should say. Identifying that balance and manipulating it comfortably turns a normal player into a ambassador.

And that's exactly what McFadden became: An ambassador.

The senior on Tuesday was awarded the inaugural "Good Guy Award" from writers who cover Auburn on a daily basis. After years of watching players duck interviews in the craziest ways -- Kodi Burns has nothing on David Copperfield when it comes to escaping a closed elevator -- we wanted to reward the guys who take the time to stand up when it's not easy.

McFadden did it time and again. When Auburn was askew during the 2008 season, he strolled in for his weekly powwows with the same enthusiasm he exhibits these days. If stories about the Tigers' defense were out of style, McFadden adapted by discussing anyone on the team.

He is a social guy. He pays attention. The comments he provided about teammates were insightful, thoughtful and often novel.

All this from a guy who was a sullen mess during his first season at Auburn.

He has our respect. He deserves your as well.

west Virginia finished their season very strong. They played Cinci very close and then beat Pitt and Rutgers. Their most disappointing loss was to South Florida. We beat them early when our offense was clicking pretty well. I don't know that we could beat them now.

My guess is that the second half color commentary will involve little focus on the game and a lot of focus on FSU in the 90s.

11:18 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I think we could beat them now. We ended on a bad note but we played some good teams. Yeah UGA kind of had a blah year, but they hung with everyone outside of UF and they've never been devoid of talent.

From more than one account James was lazy and had a poor attitude. He deserved what he got. The only reason this is a big story is because he is a baby and his daddy is on ESPN.

I didn't mean we could beat West Virginia now as a knock on us. We are also improved and I think we are much better defensively, but Cinci and Pitt are two very good teams. Nearly beating Cinci and taking down Pitt are very impressive to me. Rutgers seems to be a bit better than I thought, too.

In terms of TT, I have to agree with Jet, even in terms of Chaz Ramsey. I do think Nall is a very good offensive line coach, but I think he screwed up big time in his treatment of Ramsey, if what I have read is true. As an offensive coordinator, Nall is a great offensive line coach, but when a great coach has to go by what doctors say. If not, the consequences can be very bad, which is what I see happening with Leach.

The AD at TT doesn't like Leach anyway. Leach should have gone by the doctor's word on the concussion. If he really was trying to shame the kid, he made a fatal mistake. Great offensive mind, but a huge wiff in terms of decision making.

11:31 AM
Blogger CHB said...

I think the Ramsey deal and the James deal are a little different. From what I have read it seems as though James might have been milking this concussion thing so that he didn't have to do what his coaches were asking. It's like the little cry babies in gym class saying they have a note from their doctor.

11:34 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

CHB, that may be true but when you are coach you have to take the cautious approach with major injuries such as this and a concussion is actually more dangerous than a back injury.

Reference said coach (really, I'm thinking of 3 particular oft-mentioned former coaches) indirectly using whatever descriptor you'd like but never by their proper name.

As stated earlier, I believe messing with a kid who has had a concussion is asking for trouble.

But the episode isn't about Adam James or tool sheds. It's about motive, means and opportunity.

The bosses at Texas Tech had decided they had had enough of Mike Leach, so they had motive to get rid of him.

Adam James provided the means and the opportunity to do just that and save $800,000 in the process.

12:31 PM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

Who does TTU think they are going to replace Leach with? Lubbock is a terrible place to live and recruit to. Leach will go to another school and be fine. TTU will return to a sub-par program.

12:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Kiffikin has that same Leach kind of problem. When you are a head coach you don't make off the cuff kind of comments. You are calculating in terms of what you say and the effect it will have. I do believe it is why Chizik is so terse when discussing player injuries and suspensions.

12:34 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

dan dan, I suppose it depends upon what the goal of TT is. They are a university first, not a football program.

They had to fire him today because he would be owed $800,000 tomorrow, per his contract.

I guess I think its a "cutting off your nose" situation with the TTU admin. Unless the new Tubs to TTU rumor comes true, I don't think they will get a coach on par with Leach, and their fball program along with the revenue it produces will diminish.

12:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hehehe, now that there is funny.

12:53 PM
Blogger Ephemeral said...

My opinion is influenced by the fact that I had a concussion that required bedrest for five days, and I felt awful the whole time. Darkness helps, but the idea of having to stand for long periods of time with even a mild concussion is ridiculous.

If I had been the parent, for the kid's sake, I probably would have not have filed a formal complaint. Better to withdraw him from the football team (can you do that?) and let him transfer next semester. The situation has set him up for ridicule.

I wonder what Chris Todd thinks of all this.

12:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

dan dan, football revenue is a small part of a university, although a large portion of the athletic budget. As for getting a coach that wins like Leach, I seriously doubt it. From what I have read, Lubbock isn't exactly a dream place to be.

Steve Williams wasn't just a pro-wrestling legend.

The guy was an all Big 8 lineman and a four time heavyweight All American Wrestler at Oklahoma.

Thanks RK. I hadn't heard of the guy.

Williams was a legit tough guy, he got the Dr. Death nickname at Oklahoma when he broke his nose during a tournament and taped it up and continued.

His senior year he finished runner up to Bruce Baumgartner in the NCAA championships, and a lot of people thought had he focued just on wrestling in college and not split time with football he would have been a candidate for an 84 or 88 gold medal in the Olympics.

With the whole Leach thing, I almost wonder if this is a publicity stunt?

James' father works for ESPN who recently discovered the attention they can garner from coverage of the Tiger scandal. So now they proposition James with a payment to get Leach fired and flex the media muscle.

I just checked their main website, and so many headlines are trying to stir up mud. You'd think it'll become even more of this with all these segmented cities sites.

3:37 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

I believe if Tuberville wants a BCS job, TTU is probably his last, best chance.

Unless it comes out that Leach did something truly inhumane (at least moreso than what has been reported thus far), he should be able to sit out a year and land a decent job at a lesser BCS program in time for the 2011 season.

I'm specifically thinking of Maryland, Illinois, or even Colorado would be good places for a guy like Leach. . .not that there are any guys like Leach, other than Leach himself.

Blogger ehyou said...

The ESPN Dothan site is amazing.

Blogger astatguy said...

Some of the Tigers will wear white shoes with Orange trim and a side message of "War Eagle". They're wearing them with high navy blue socks. That's a look I would normally expect to see in a Florida gift shop, but after watching HS football highlight films I think it may be the new cool. I like it a lot better than the current all black look.

Blogger Jet said...

If the kid's name was Adam Jones, it would have been leaked to ESPN and gotten the same coverage because my sense is that the AD at Texas Tech was looking for a reason to get rid of Leach, who he doesn't like.

It's not like Myers' is bowing to political correctness. After all, this is the guy who hired Bob Knight.

Adam James was placed under Gerald Myers' Christmas tree all wrapped up with a neat little bow.

3:54 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Tuberville shouldn't have a problem landing a BCS gig. The big question would be if he really wants to. He certainly doesn't need the money.

3:59 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

I agree with that Jet...

Tech wanted to fire Leach and jumped on this "gift" as their best shot.

I bet they end up having to pay him some money in the end.

3:59 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jet, I do agree that the Texas Tech was waiting for Leach to give him a reason. He apparently got the proof he need and moved on it quickly.

4:00 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I doubt Colorado would touch Leach, since they have had their NCAA troubles. Some like Illinois or Maryland would make sense.

4:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do view the Leach situation as similar to Bobby Knight. Nobody doubted Knight was a good coach, but there weren't many schools looking to inherit a headache.

Worst case scenario is that they have to write him a check for $2.5 million. His buyout was $500k per year remaining. They avoided the $800k with the dismissal today, which would have surely occurred whether Leach had sought an injunction or not.

4:09 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Correction ...

Just read where S. Mandel says the buyout would have been $1.6 (400k for 4 years left)

4:13 PM

I wouldn't expect to see Leach with a "will coach for food" anytime soon. The guy is very intelligent. He just isn't politically correct.
