Freestyling from The Bay
Hey everyone. So I'm still stuck in this hotel room. It's nice to have a view of Tampa Bay and all, but it's really just me and the computer. Still.
Why not write more?
I'll take a few minutes each afternoon (pre-Outback Bowl) to pontificate on some Auburn topic. It'll be freestyle, stream-of-consciousness stuff.
So on that note...
Walt McFadden is underappreciated.
Sure, he's an all-conference cornerback. Sure, he was the most reliable element of a defense that was unstable for most of the season. Sure, he used free time to groom some of the Tigers' young defensive backs and share the lessons taught to him by his predecessors.
What you may not know is how valuable McFadden has been in other ways.
Talking with reporters isn't easy. Questions sometimes get difficult, answers become confusing. A balance exists between what players want to say and what they should say. Identifying that balance and manipulating it comfortably turns a normal player into a ambassador.
And that's exactly what McFadden became: An ambassador.
The senior on Tuesday was awarded the inaugural "Good Guy Award" from writers who cover Auburn on a daily basis. After years of watching players duck interviews in the craziest ways -- Kodi Burns has nothing on David Copperfield when it comes to escaping a closed elevator -- we wanted to reward the guys who take the time to stand up when it's not easy.
McFadden did it time and again. When Auburn was askew during the 2008 season, he strolled in for his weekly powwows with the same enthusiasm he exhibits these days. If stories about the Tigers' defense were out of style, McFadden adapted by discussing anyone on the team.
He is a social guy. He pays attention. The comments he provided about teammates were insightful, thoughtful and often novel.
All this from a guy who was a sullen mess during his first season at Auburn.
He has our respect. He deserves your as well.

So, that means BOOM!
That has to be one of the more impressive page flips of your career, Norm. Outta freakin' nowhere!
...and blindfolded, no less.
A Puppet Hour flip! That means either a fairy got its wings, or a prostitute just threw up in a trashcan.
HA! Prostitutes only throw up in your lap Michael. Silly
Okay, now that I look back at the previous page, it wasn't completely out of nowhere, but impressive nonetheless.
That is why I invented Trashcan Pants, Harrison. I have already sold 8 pairs.
I just read a bleacher report on the Outback Bowl and thought it appropriate to provide a synopsis so all of you will be prepared for the game.
Northwestern will try to pass the ball.
Auburn will try to run the ball.
I hope that adds to the game experience for you. I wasted several minutes of my life to gather that expert analysis.
Michael - Is that kind of like a diaper for a horse pulling a carriage?
Steve - With that insight,I heard of a recent opening with a fine Institution in Lubbock, TX. You must know what a tumbleweed is to apply.
The premise of this thread -- that Walt McFadden is underappreciated -- has been debunked. More than 400 posts have found their way into this thread.
See, Walt, you are appreciated. And I'm heading to the house for the remainder of 2009!
Depending on how much you paid for the prostitute, the horse analogy may or may not be accurate.
I do like McFadden a lot. He is a solid corner. I think Thorpe will eventually be a star, but hopefully McFadden gets his shot to play on Sundays. He is worth it, if only for the post game interviews.
Okay, since this is puppet hour, does that mean you are referring to puppet prostitutes?
Puppet prostitutes? Are you mad, man? Normal puppets cause many fingers and hands to be bitten off. I don't even want to postulate what would happen if someone got mixed up with a puppet prostitute.
I hear puppet prostitutes are kinky. They let you put your hand...wait, belay that. This is a family blog.
ok kids. I'm out. You all have a classy new year.
AU-37 NW-20.
I also am out....booking a ski trip to Vermont. Until later.
420
rats, I'm too late for the 420 post.
My SW boarding pass is available online in 1 hour!
Check that - 40 minutes!
OK, I may soon start pouting :(
Cincy, I'm not going either. Does that help?
Well, maybe a little, Norm. We need a strong HABOTN showing of those who were left behind during the game on Saturday.
I don't think that was grammatically correct, but you get the idea.
We promise not to leave you behind during the game, Cincy ;-)
(btw, you want a free ticket?)
Anyone heard from Jay G. Tate?
You're sweet, THT. It isn't the money, it is the time. Hubby has some huge goings on the first of the year and we just can't afford the days away.
Woulda thunk that the Leach firing would at least prompt a new post.
Seeing as I have such a sweet life due to my husband not caring that I don't want to work, I thought it best not to go to the game without him :)
I'm trying to figger out why TTU is backing the James kid. The only rationale I can speculate is that the TTU PTB want Leach out so bad, they'll jump at any opportunity. This will cost TTU a lot of money when Leach wins the suit. Leach will get a lot more than his normal contract buyout. The word "onerous" will be used in the complaint.
Leach's tell-all book deal will embarass TTU further. We'll hear about this for years.
It's no secret that I have problems with the AU PTB. The AU PTB deserves credit for having the good sense to pay CTT $5 mil to keep quiet.
oh, I new it was a scheduling conflict. Just thought I'd throw a bit more temptation out there for you. In fact, tickets for everyone in your avatar!
CT ...you may work and contribute with salary for your family anymore, but having met you and reading all that you do for your family ...you contribute very well.
oops ..."not" work
THT tell 2.0 thank you for searching the Tampa area for the Traditional New Years day meal. Hope she can find some.
THT, don't tempt me! I do think hubby has provided me with a few extra funds for purchases for the condo since he knew how badly I wanted to go. I think he has also been very relieved that I haven't pouted. :)
I originally lobbied the family to abandon previous plans for this week, go to Tampa and sit in the HABOTN section. I suppose it's a good thing I wasn't successful, my only client has buried me with work this week and we had to abandon the plans anyway. So it goes.
Cincy like most good wives/mothers your contribution is much greater than you will ever know.
You do have one trait that my beloved wife had.
SHOP TILL YOU DROP then;
Get up and shop some more.
Okay,
I am going to shut it down in order to get the final things done for a 5:30 AM wake up call. I want to wish all HOTTIES a very special and Happy New Year. Each of you have made a wonderful impact on my life in 2009. I thank you for letting an old man have some of this fun and enlightenment. A special thanks to our leader, Jay. You are without a doubt the best. For all the ones I will see over the next couple of days, I can't wait. Good times ahead. War Eagle, Go Tigers. Beat the Wildcats.
Hoopie,
Will you at least get to watch on TV?
ok, Cincy... for hubby's sake, the ticket offer is no longer valid.
IV & digger - don't forget the ponchos.
IV,
Have an AUsome time in Tampa! I'll be looking for you on TV.
digger,
Your wife and I would have gotten along very well :)
THT,
Got it.
THT got mine in bag already.
Should we put out and "All Points Bulletin" for one missing sports writer?
I can't use his name until clearance is obtained.
cincy - it will be awful hard for tv cameras to get us in the FOV. We're in lower deck, but upper rows about even with the goal line (the one on the right side of your tv, i think). We'll hold our placards up during TV timeouts, at least in the first qtr until we get bored with it! I'm hoping JGT can get a photo or video from his press box perch.
digger - Goldberg mentioned the words "cheerleaders", "beach", and "today" in the same sentence on his blog. Don't know if there's any connection with JGT's scarcity.
Cincy ..oh yes. We're good for New Years Eve and Day. We originally were doing a Nurse Practitioner school tour with our daughter this week, but my work schedule was re-arranged for me.
We've got a small group coming over for the game, but I'm sure I can spend some game time with the great HABOTN folks during the game also.
I guess it is the mama in me, but I am also a little concerned about our incommunicado sportswriter. But, my son tells me I worry too much, so I'm sure everything is fine.
I've had concerns as well, Cincy. It's probably a slow day re: AU in Tampa, so maybe he's been sightseeing all day. Who knows, maybe he went to PF's wedding! Isn't that today/tonight?
I think the wedding is tomorrow night. Think being the operative word.
THT's 6:24 post.
I think you are on to something but we will never know cause mama reads this blog.
A texas TV station visited the "closets" where the James kid was "imprisoned". Turns out one of the closets was in fact the media room.

Hoopie - just go to page 1, 10:16 post by Sean
I guess all of use have great moments in history that we would like to visit if we had a time machine. For me, that moment is the meeting when Bowling Green selected their school colors.
excuse me for the unintentional slight... I meant the 10:16 post by SIR Sean.
that's funny, SFC!
Another interesting football note
per Chris Lowe: DC for LSU may be interested in the Ga DC job. He would not deny in a presser. He makes 450,000 now and Ga. is offerring 600,000, plus Lowe says he would like nothing better than to play Tenn every year since they let him go for big daddy.
Thanks THT. I finally jump on here without reading all the missed posts and end up making a duplication post.
I have read where Chavis may be interested in the Georgia position. To me it doesn't make good sense. He has only been at LSU one season. It reminds me of a temporary employee we had where I worked a few years back. He stayed about a month, during which time we were training him. He hadn't really done eithing. He found another position and moved on during that month. I had been staying up late every night to explain things to him. I was ready to kill him when I heard.
that URL was too painful to try and link!
Chavis to GA? Hmmm... 600K is a ton of money for a coordinator. These salaries are just nuts.
It would be a quick move but sometimes money talks louder than doing what is right.
By the way, you haven't really lived until you spent weeks training a guy in India over the phone from 10:30 to midnight every night for a month. Life just don't get much better than that.
Needless to say, we assigned him a Russian nickname. I believe it was zonovabeach or something like that.
I had something similar happen to me on training a guy at Magic Chef. We were all training him and givng him all the help we could. He came to work on a Monday and Wednesday he left for lunch and never came back. I still don't know what happened.
BIG new thread UPZ.
digger, moments like that are priceless, especially when you are working on a project that is understaffed and behind schedule.
