Calling around on Cam Newton: First and Last Part

Hey everyone. I am working on a story about Cam Newton, Auburn's 5-star quarterback who signed last month. He played sparingly during two seasons at Florida. He played all the time at Blinn (Texas) College.

I've been talking with the Southwest Junior College Football Conference coaches who schemed against Newton last fall.

Here's what Donnie Bigby, head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma, had to say.

Newton's numbers in Blinn's 55-42 win against NEO:
17-29, 302 yards, 2 TDs

*OF NOTE -- Newton was suspended for the first quarter.

Bigby on Newton: ``He's the most athletic and skilled quarterback I've seen since Michael Bishop. (Bishop, who later starred at Kansas State, played at Blinn in 1996.) You could tell he had tons and tons of potential. I'm talking about raw talent you just don't see at this level."

Bigby on what NEO did to match up with Newton: ``He's such a big kid. He looks like a defensive lineman, to be honest. I think he'd be a tough matchup on his own -- if he was the only guy on his team. The thing is that he had a great supporting cast last season. We couldn't just worry about him, but he created a lot of problems."

CH=B,
I am late coming to the party, but you asked about Muscle Shoals. I grew up in Florence, right across the river. Very pretty little city, People are nice. Not a whole lot to do. We always came to Birmingham for shopping and stuff.

When we lived there my parents were friends with Barry Beckett, one of the Swampers of Muscle Shoals Sound, and I babysat for him and for a lot of their events. Those were some fun memories. But they are no more.

Anyway, it is a nice place to live, but more on the laid back side. Wilson Lake is awesome for water sports.

Wake- I'm very surprised. Petrino is a very good coach, but apparently he is really really struggling in getting players. That is not a good sign for his stay in Arkansas. If you don't have players, eventually you won't win games, no matter if Knute Rockne is coaching them up.

He’s not ashamed, and neither should you be. He’s both violent and erotic all at the same time, something those who’ve had the privilege of showering with him have know for years. I want opinions in columns. That's what they are there for. I don't even have to agree with the opinion.

I'm a political conservative. I enjoy reading the opinions of top liberal columnists. I'm an Auburn fan. I enjoy cogent analysis of Alabama athletics.

For years, there was Finebaum the newspaper guy and Finebaum the radio provocateur. I used to go out of my way to read his columns. They were intelligent, insightful, and challenging to my own biases. Not anymore. The personalities have officially melded.

One of two things has occurred: a) Finebaum the newspaper guy has surrendered to the philosophy of "licking the finger and checking the winds" or b) he has accepted Saban as his personal savior because every issue in his column these days is viewed through the prism of Saban and his glory.

This could be the perfect marriage of the physically-gifted quarterback and the system that helps turn him into a star. A former backup at Florida before being arrested for stealing a laptop, he’s a 6-6, 245-pound athlete, who led Blinn (Tex.) College to a junior college national championship last season. He has a strong arm, outstanding athletic ability, and an opportunity to learn from coordinator Gus Malzahn, who could probably milk 20 touchdown passes out of the Tiger long snapper. If Newton can soak up all he has to learn about the system he could be a household name by October.

Lucky for us we have a great scholarship long snapper.

PF ... I would guess that every QB/RB/WR/DB/LB signee we've had for the last 10 years has played 7 on 7 with the high school teams in summer camps.

The problem with this is that it is talking up "all-star" teams which adds another layer into the recruiting process. Not only will you have to deal with the HS coach, but potentially the "7 on 7" coach as well.

Who's going to be behind these 7 on 7 teams? That's easy: Nike, Adidas, UnderArmour. The gang mentality will spread to football.

"You can't sign at -------, they're a Nike school,"

Maybe we're contributing to this with our incessant 24/7/365 demand for info, but we're killing sports by trying to make everything bigger and more like the pros.

Baseball "travelball" has certainly affected the pro draft and college schollys. Now the sports apparel companies are working their way into that situation also.

Love for a sport = increased revenues = more at stake = increased monetary influence = shifting priorities and methods = Loving a quasi-amatuer sport to death.

Hoopie - 100% chance

Yeah, if Auburn can sign 14 RBs, everything will be okay. Thanks Chris Low.

Captain Obvious would imply that he's correct in his lazy analysis.

I know these are 17/18 year old kids...and I know it's a bit nuts...but man, I'm getting a tad nervous about signing day.

In the past, we've known who we'd get, and had a few surprises we were hoping for. This year, we have the "commitment" of a good handful of guys that other teams are hoping are their surprises. That doesn't sit too well for me.

I'm especially "nervous" over Trovon Reed, Coleman, and Christian. Those are 3 guys this recruiting class really NEED, and there is some serious push coming from other powerhouses for them. Saban, LSU, and USCw--those guys are always top 5ish in recruiting and they're throwing out all the stops to take these guys from AU.

This is the time when our staff can shine and flex their muscle. If they fend off the "wolves" with these 3 it'd be huge. I don't even know what I'll call it if they actually sign Lattimore, Whitaker, Lemonier, Jones, etc. in addition!

Bob Davies = Captain Obvious.

None other compares.

It's not only what he says, it's his dullard delivery that cements his Captain Obvious Characterization.

that's what I was reading Hoopie...this is a very crucial class for AU--much like the 08 class was for Bammer.

Blogger wtc said...

Just my observation:

Many AU fans expect something to go wrong when it comes to AU. Not saying that is happening on this blog, but I have spoken with several that feel when things are going well (such as recruting this year) that it is only a matter of time before something goes wrong. They think that since AU got some big name recruits, that when the traditional powers come calling, Au will lose out. The recruits will be sold that the other school is better. That was the old staff's way of doing business. AU might lose one here at the end, but Other than the one going to CLemson (still may keep him)I don't think AU loses any. That is just my opinion and those that I talk to at AU. We may even have a BIG surprise on signing day.

That is all.

Or a lot like that physics class I had to pass Summer of 98

3:13 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Well, I'm glad to worry a little about people "stealing" our recruits, rather than worrying if:

a) half our class will qualify
b) can the class walk and chew gum simultaneously?

What we've learned is that Tiger Prowl, Big Cat Weekend and Auburn Everyday work.

Innovative thinking without losing our traditions is a positive.

I think we sell these 17-18 year old kids too short sometimes.

Yes, some of them are likely to change their mind, but that's just human nature, not their age.

Look at Urban Meyer. One day, he says he's resigning and the very next day he says he coming back. We're still not sure exactly what he's doing.

Saban told the Dolphins he was not leaving for Alabama.

Tubs told Ole Miss the only way he was leaving was in a pine box.

Granted, those last two might have been more about media control, but anybody can have a change of heart, whether they're 17 or 45.

Sign seen at Winzel's in beautiful downtown Montgomery today:

A pessimist soaks up sunshine and radiates gloom. (or something like that)

That might apply to some of us Auburn fans.

Also seen today: a bumper sticker that read "Reagan: Now More Than Ever." Jet--was that you?!

Huntsville misses it too, E-Bro. It was truly the glory days.

Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

The early to mid 90's were good for sales guys in Huntsville. You could just take a short-cut right across Redstone Arsenal.

4:03 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

At least Redstone Arsenal is still finding plenty of countries to sell its missiles too.

It's not all bad news.

4:04 PM
Blogger michael said...

Redstone sells zero weapons to foreign countries. Talk to your elected officials about what is done with the things that are made.

Blogger Jet said...

Blogger Harrison said...

I picked up a scud missile at the Aresenal gift shop when I lived in Huntsville. Sold it to my German neighbors for twice the amount

4:12 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Of course the Arsenal doesn't sell weapons to foreign countries.

Especially not to the Netherlands.

4:13 PM
Blogger michael said...

Ummm... Harrison, first of all, Scuds suck so nice job turning the profit there and not getting stuck with one, second of all, are you sure you weren't at St Petersburg Arsenal? You know, since America doesn't make scuds?

4:15 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Michael's just upset because the Air Force shut down the missile silos on his goat farm.

The rent for the silos was the true source of income.

4:17 PM
Blogger Harrison said...

whatever dude. i bought whatever it was. Like i know anything about missiles. The sales lady was super hot, so i bought it.

4:18 PM
Blogger michael said...

E-Bro, not sure what you be sayin... like Redstone Arsenal is a one stop weapons shop for other nations to come check out? There is an independent command based here that is in charge of the Army's ally assistance stuff, but to say "Redstone Arsenal sells it's weapons to other countries" is kind of silly. Much more broad than the truth. The truth is that America sells some weapons, some of which are designed at Redstone.

And for the record, Eurasia gets 10% off all patriot missiles due to some connections I have.

4:21 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Back around 1993, I supervised an application of a roof repair product on a building right next to one of the test stands at Redstone. They were testing some type of rocket engine (I have about as much knowledge in this area as Harrison). It was so loud that everyone would just have to stop working and cover their ears until it was over. I'm talking ground-shaking loud. I was there about three days, and it happened multiple times each day. Surprisingly, I don't think a single one of us had ear plugs...smart.

4:27 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Yeah, I know I'm misconstruing things.

I'm just joshin' anyway.

I've got some buds who work as budget analysts who help oversee the sells of missiles. Told me one of their more frequent buyers was the Netherlands.

That made me laugh.

4:28 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Actually, I don't remember. I'm thinking it was for NASA.

I actually used to call on NASA and US Army Missile Command a little later (94-98) when I was in the air freight business, so that probably adds to my confusion.
