Calling around on Cam Newton: First and Last Part
Hey everyone. I am working on a story about Cam Newton, Auburn's 5-star quarterback who signed last month. He played sparingly during two seasons at Florida. He played all the time at Blinn (Texas) College.
I've been talking with the Southwest Junior College Football Conference coaches who schemed against Newton last fall.
Here's what Donnie Bigby, head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma, had to say.
Newton's numbers in Blinn's 55-42 win against NEO:
17-29, 302 yards, 2 TDs
*OF NOTE -- Newton was suspended for the first quarter.
Bigby on Newton: ``He's the most athletic and skilled quarterback I've seen since Michael Bishop. (Bishop, who later starred at Kansas State, played at Blinn in 1996.) You could tell he had tons and tons of potential. I'm talking about raw talent you just don't see at this level."
Bigby on what NEO did to match up with Newton: ``He's such a big kid. He looks like a defensive lineman, to be honest. I think he'd be a tough matchup on his own -- if he was the only guy on his team. The thing is that he had a great supporting cast last season. We couldn't just worry about him, but he created a lot of problems."

I saw Gorbachev when he spoke at the Beave.
Talk about surreal.
Why do sea gulls fly over the sea?
Because if they flew over the bay, they'd be bay-gulls! Get it?!
-Brak
Why do birds suddenly appear?
Oh, I thought you were just getting the lyrics mixed up on that song by the Carpenters.
I love that show. We used to watch it in college and giggle for hours. Maybe that's why girls never came over
Just like me, they long to be ...
all day long I'm singing
Hooh! ahh! hooh! ahh!
You guys are a bunch of sissies. How can we go from Van Halen to Burt Bacharach on the same thread?
10 more minutes and hopefully I will become unfettered.
That song always reminds me of the Simpsons episode when they flash back to when Homer and Marge met in high school. That and the Barry White "Don't be baby, lady" song. "Homer, why is there make-ou music on?"
Runaway "t".
Norm, that's because you and Jet didn't take my Van Halen set-up earlier today!
Harrison, can you clarify what show you are talking about? Surely you weren't watching the Carpenters tv show?
that was in reference to Michael's joke from Brak on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. sorry
Either way, no girls were coming over.
nope
for some reason girls don't like to play cards, giggle at silly tv shows and get as drunk as you can as much as we did. I hope they can live with temselves
I want this TV, so I can watch USC/UCLA games and gripe about how both teams are wearing colored unis and I can't tell them apart.
I am sure my love of space ghost kept the girls away. That and my habit of killing old ladies' cats.
I kept Michael's harem for him, he just didn't know about it.
Wait, I had a harem? Dang it, I really should have paid more attention during orientation.
Come to think of it, they're still locked in a shed somewhere. If anyone comes across a harem that hasn't been fed in six years, let Michael know. They're his.
Do they look suspiciously like goats?
Wow, I didn't even think about how I would have had to feed them if I had known about them. Feeding one girlfriend is expensive enough. Maybe it was a good thing I didn't know about them.
About six of my goats did form a harem a couple of years ago for a goat I named Studly McGoatbeard. That whole situation is pretty weird, But I would hope my harem is made out of humans. But hey, a harem's a harem I guess.
I picked up this quote from another site. Presumably this is a quote that Kiffen made on the Jim Rome show a couple of days ago
"Recruits weren't coming to Tennessee to wear the yellow uniform. They were coming to play for this coaching staff."
So what we have here is a Tool making an arrogant comment to another Tool. I'm sure Rome didn't prompt the comment or anything like that.
Something close to a riot going on over at rivals. Paying customers are up in arms about the lack of info for the last few days. It's pretty funny.
I'll bet all the other male goats hated it when the exchange student goat came in and took all the ladies.
Yellow uniform. hahaha
I bet The Great Pumpkin gets pissed every time he hears or thinks of the guy that replaced him.
I listened to that interview. I was really pissed that Rome didn't berate little lane. That quote wasn't quite as bad when it was in context. But he made some others that were pretty laughable.
If anyone recalls my man in the closet story from last week. I went back to that house today (alone this time) and the door wasn't locked. It made for a few stressful minutes while I cleared the house. The guys liquor bottle was still in the garage so he hadn't been back, another agent was in it this week so I guess she forgot to lock it back up.
Definitely had me wishing I had my gun.
you should catch a bunch of racoons and let them loose on the squatters
no recruiting info = slow night on habotn
Hmm, not a bad idea PF... but the question is should they be rabid raccoons?
so where are the idiots tonight
I'm here. Certified idiot.
Michael told me I was an idiot, nuff said.
well your number 440. you get a trophy,
we r all idiots
Don't tell PF please, he gets jealous.
I'm keeping my trophy PF. I earned it with my debates with Steve from Lubbock.
i won't tell if you dont tell about mine for 435. pf is skinless anyway
where is wtc's mom. we still good for signing day. i cant wait for the surprise'
I sure am missing WTC, his mother and cruitin' news. Does anyone even know a rumor? I am desperate, I'll take anything.
Does anybody want to start a rumor? We won't tell Jay, will we? Of course, he would have to check it out if he saw it.
Wake,
rabid adds pain but increases the chance of agg. assault, attempted murder, and murder charges. If he's just torn up, and doesn't have to have a hospital stay, charges are unlikely
IV, that's a medal of honor, not a trophy. Bronze Star, maybe.
Thanks PF, legal advice is the primary reason I come to the habotn.
I heard a hot rumor the other day that Freddie Mercury from Queen was gay... but I doubt that is true.
Coleman is visiting the walmartians this week, but don't worry.
I like to worry. It helps to keep the time from passing so quickly.
that's just gross, c=b.
Hopefully the purpose is espionage.
^h
nice article on Rivals about Kiehl Frazier, the 2011 QB prospect from Arky who visited (again) last weekend. He has an offer from AU and about 10 other schools. He looks mighty impressive in the video that accompanies the article.
I wonder if Jeff Driskel also has an offer.
i dont like it that coleman going to uat. i thought he already visited. never know what happens if they get a visit. on the other hand if he goes and says no thanks we look better
Driskel's the kid that Auburn's had an offer to for a while, and UF offered after one of the All-Star game, right? Big dude? I may not follow recruiting, but I remember when people roll their twelve sided die.
sponge - I think he's on a mission assigned by CGC ;-)
IV, worry more.
that's right, PF. AU did offer him a long while ago.
UNC vs NCSU coming on.
I'll pass. It's not March.
i wonder if shon is turned off by the number and quality of au o line recruits. bama struggling to get o line commits this year.
When this baby hits 600, I'm flipping it. You just watch and see.
I will stay up late just to watch.
Rumors are that Seastrunk is going to Memphis or Baylor!?!? How in the world did that happen?
I think ya'll are gonna be up real late waiting, tonight has been slow.
Unless ya'll are just going to chat it up amongst yourselves.
I think there must be something fishy about Seastrunk. The coaches gave him the cold shoulder for seemingly no reason and now he is headed to a low level Big 12 team or a Conf USA team? There is a back story there.
come on 600
i just want coleman. tired of him playing the field, especially w/ the walmartians. need him to open holes for lattimore and dyer.
I don't know Lache, but he sure seems like a happy kid. Every photo has a great smile. PMarsh thinks Lache is going to be a Duck.
ducks are crazy to watch swim...little feathered boats. So strange.
i would love for coleman to cancel visit to tide, then chiz steal one of theirs.
they dont swim, they float quickly
Rumor has it that Seastrunk has a 'street agent' and that whoever signs him might get an investigation from the NCAA. JUST A RUMOR.
Listening to JLee on Jox (from Bham) on line. He thinks Coleman is still AU bound. He thinks Whitaker is still an AU lean, but not as sure as he was before the UGA visit. Thinks Lattimore is (CHizik visits Thursday, Spurrier visits Saturday) still AU bound. Thinks AU is the team to beat for Bryan Jones.
Says Dyer is very influential in getting several other players to come on board.
Reed will get a call from Jlee tonight. He thinks he will still come to AU.
Thats almost the same thing I do... I sink quickly.
sponge - stop frettin' WTC's Mom says Coleman is AU bound. It won't hurt for him to reconnoiter the enemy.
Bryce Brown had a street agent, too. One of the most blatent, crooked one's ever. The NCAA sucks at figuring those situations out.
I don't know about y'all, but I'm about to have a bowl of ice cream. Molly will get one, too.
What time is Lache announcing tomorrow?
pf all aau basketball players have street agents. i dont see a lot of bb teams slapped w/ probation. i say that, but lebo has managed to find some that werent on the take
....cause they SUCK
the dude that runs the Mainstream Jazz show on NPR sounds like he has a mouth full of some really mellow tranquilizers.
I know of a couple, Sponge. One rhymes with boo sc.
still, it takes something well beyond the shadiness of a typical street agent before the NCAA can have that "AHA" moment...
i am out for a while. wake me at 600
(NAME DROPPER ALERT)
One of the original writers ot Space Ghost C2C and co-creator of ATHF is a friend of mine. Helped him get his first TV job back in '86 or so.
(END NAME DROPPER ALERT)
Freep - you might as well have been speaking Arabic to me.
I'm learning to speak Arabic right now. I would type something here but they don't use letters.
Freep, does he always have the best grass?
I pass on grass.
All the time.
The best thing about White Collar?
The 19th century maps and bird's eye views hanging on the walls. Sure, they're repros, but still cool.
Has South Carolina gotten a 10 second violation tonight without being guarded?
No? No? Didn't think so.
If the students want the floor, they're gonna get it.
Kentucky at #1.
Well that didn't last long.
South Carolina beat us by nine at the Beave.
Kentucky only beat us by five at the Beave.
We should have seen this coming.
John Wall will make millions. Devan Downey, however, is an incredible player.
YOOOOOO
Yeah, it's gonna be weird when Wall wins a bunch of National Player of the Year awards while Downing is the SEC Player of the Year.
sup jhag
Not much sir, just got home from a little basketball game...
last night was nuts i sat the row behind the Cavs bench for the Heat/Cavs game it was unreal
Must have been sweet.
Crazy finish to that game.
Yeah it was a great experience...I sat beside Shaw and Lebrons body guards...no lie they were looking for women for those two the entire night
openly
Classy.
if i stood to earn over a billion dollars in my career, i would probably have someone to seek out and screen my tail for me too. all you gotta do is show up and you are on a plane 1000 miles away in a few hours.
a friend of mine worked for an nbadl team and said even those dudes thought they were hot stuff and hit on her constantly. they liked the fact that she didn't take their crap and it kind of turned into an annoying game after a while.
Good morning, Hotties! I hate I missed that bball game last night. I always like to see the underdog win.
Either Jay G is really busy or there is absolutely nothing to report this week...
Jay G has been away celebrating Kentucky being ranked number one.
He'll return next week when Kansas returns to that spot, when actually it should be Syracuse or Villanova.
He didn't get to celebrate very long.
The federal deficit is unsustainable.
PF, please elaborate. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
PF,
Please do not elaborate.
I was just trying to spread Wednesday cheer. I don't actually believe that...yet. Carrying debt is not necessarily a bad thing, and there are ways to do it that doesn't cost a terrible amount. There comes a point, though, where China (and other investors) will raise an eyebrow if they think they'll never get paid back and cut back on what debt they're willing to buy from us. Who has any idea what that point is, but we owe a lot of people a lot of money right now.
Anyone know what the demand is for ammunition now? I watched it for a while (like Jay was doing with wholesale crude oil).
Sportswriter Homer Tate - nice article in MA this morning. I especially like how you put the really good stuff on page 2. Nicely done.
Oh yeah, morning hotties.
PF, my Wednesday was already ruined when I read an article about an $8B high-speed rail system...
What's Texas Tech's recruiting class look like? Do coachable two stars make up the bulk?
Jay,
Enjoyed the article on recruiting. I echo the suggestion to do an article on the Owens.
Norm!
Luv,
Every time I read about something like that, I immidiately think of one of the two Simpsons episodes that I can watch over and over again, MONORAIL! Even if you're not a Simpsons fan, I'd recommend watching it for the public spending message.
Thanks, Hotties, for alerting me to Jay G's article. I never even think of looking there. I guess I just assume he will post it on here if he has an article.
Politicians have been trying to put in a high speed rail between Tampa and Orlando for years. When all of those sinkholes opened up during that last cold snap, I can only imagine how much fun it would have been to fix a sunken high speed rail.
I get to go sit through a 4 hour psych exam. I am pretty sure I am not crazy... but who really knows.
PF, funny you should mention that. Someone in the comment section of the article said the current administration needs to watch that episode.
Where can I find it?
In 4 hours, they'll find a way to call you crazy, even if you aren't.
That sounds terrible. Are you requsting Top Secret clearance or something?
My spelling is a little off this morning, moreso than usual.

Going into Law Enforcement PF, if they ask I don't know any of you guys... especially Michael.
I think I'm as sane as anybody willing to let people shoot at them for 40K a year.
LUV - where is this $8B rail project of which you speak?
About 5 yrs ago the morons up here tried to get a commuter rail project started to connect Raleigh, Durham, and Hillsborough (the tiny county seat of Orange Co. where Chapel Hill is). It wasn't designed to go to Chapel Hill, UNC, any of the major malls, or the airport. It would have been useless. Thankfully they weren't able to get their stupid idea off the ground and the few billion of matching Fed $ expired. I'm sure hundreds of thousands of $ were wasted on their stupid plans.
I'll see if I can dig it up, Luv.
Otherwise, find a Simpsons fan and ask them to borrow the DVD (in my experience, most Simpsons fans collect the DVDs...) They'll know the episode when you mention it.
Tar Heel, I didn't read much of the article. I was too infuriated by the title. It was on the Fox News website.
PF, I was never a big fan of the Simpsons, but one episode I vaguely remember is when the whole family went to see a counselor. They were hooked up to machines and given buttons. Whenever someone said something that someone didn't like, they could press the button and that person got shocked. Even if you never saw the episode, I'm sure you can figure out what ensued.
PF - Hasn't China bought up so much of our debt that they own our butt?
Tar Heel, pretty much...
Here ya go Luv. Enjoy.
Marge v. Monorail
To heck with learning to speak Spanish, the kids in school today need to be taught Chinese.
Thanks, ehyou!
I would definitely fail a psych exam without even trying. But if necessary, I'd put forth enough effort to be sure I failed it.
Anyone own a Toyota? I have a 2009 Corolla. I wish I could just return it. They aren't what they used to be. Mine doesn't get nearly the mpg it should and the interior is cheap.
we have 3; also had an '06 Corolla that we loved until it was totalled in '08.
Luv, I used to be a big Toyota guy, my first three cars were Toyotas. I went with a Nissan for a couple of years and in Jan 08 I bought a Ford Fusion. Greatest car I've ever owned.
HOMER Tate - that is a really nice article this morning. I soaked up every syllable. I don't think I left any crumbs for anyone else to read.
I have never owned an American-made car because I always thought they were inferior. But, I think they've come a long way over the past few years.
Once upon a time, Luv. And not all of them are great, but I do enjoy mine. It's got all kinds of nifty stuff and I haven't even had it so much as hiccup in two years.
Wife drives an 08 Camry, and we've been pretty happy with it. Switched the seats out immediately for the leather Lexus ones, though, because the seats felt cheap.
I took it to get serviced recently, and they loaned me a Corolla for the day.I did not like it.
The 2012 Focus looks pretty nice. I have heard they are trying to improve on the mpg too.
my '75 Toyota Corona was awesome!
Tar Heel, they don't make 'em like that anymore!
The only reason I was asking about Toyotas is because of the big halt in sales they just announced.
Toyotas are made entirely in America now. When NASCAR allowed them, I started considering them a domestic vehicle manufacturer.
Most "foreign" cars are made in the U.S., aren't they?
depends. Most foreign manufacturers have facilities in the US, but they don't all necessarily make the cars from start to finish here. Even those that do don't do their whole lines here. For instance, Kia makes a few cars here, and is pushing to move towards a model like Toyotas, but doesn't make 100% of the cars they sell in America here yet. Same with Benz.
Take a look at the ports in Brunswick( Hyundai, Volvo, VW, and Land Rover), Jacksonville (Nissan),and Miami (BMW). Still a lot of finished cars being imported.
I shouldn't have said "most." I meant the big three - Honda, Toyota and Mazda.
Mazda?... MAZDA?
What's wrong with Mazda? We've had several and have had no problems.
How many hours/minutes/sec until Lache's non-AU announcement?
nothing, LUV. I just wouldn't have considered them part of the "Big 3". Granted, I have no facts on hand, but I would have thought Nissan over Mazda. Is Mazda really that big? Not knowing any better, I would have lumped them in with Subaru.
Luv, I feel for you, and all 09 toyota owners on here.
I drive a 2009 corrolla, and my wife has a 2009 camry. It was disturbing to wake up and find out both our cars were out to kill us.
I consider them the big three Japanese cars that are mostly made here in the U.S. Is that a better clarification?
stuup, what are you planning on doing?
Mazda is owned by Ford, are they not? Would they not be considered domestic with a foreign title?
oops, stupup
Luv, I really don't know. The dealer in Chattanooga was no help on the mat recall for the camry. (I don't want to drive to Atlanta in two cars to where I bought them.)
I guess I am going to call that 1-800 customer number and see what it says to do.
I wonder what's on page 2 of Jay G's article today.
I don't gamble, but I'd almost be willing to bet $5 monopoly money that we don't make it to 600.
michael - all the important info.
MJT - page 2 was EPIC. Truly great stuff indeed.
THT - we're a bit closer to it now.

oops, I forgot to credit Jay G. Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser for the above page 2.
a quick internet search found THT's big three to be correct: Toyota, Honda and Nissan (Nissan destroys Mazda, fwiw).
Also, of the big three, Toyota is the only one that produces the majority of their vehicles outside of Japan.
There is also something known as the Big Asian Four that includes Dear Leader's Cousin's auto line Hyundai.
we also have a Hyundai. It hasn't given us even the tiniest of problems. But if it does, I know I can go straight to DL and he'll take care of it.
Dear Leader would have to call his cousin, though. I heard they're not talking anymore.
stupup, I don't know if I'm going to do anything just yet. According to the guy on the ABC news last night, Toyota probably really doesn't know what the problem is.
PF, I clarified my statement. You guys are so picky about details. Sheesh!
Remember when Nissan was Datsun?
Luv, I think your right. The mat thing was a joke when we asked about it at the dealer.
I guess I will wait and see and hope I don't plow into a tree.
(I knew I should have bought a Honda.)
I wasn't arguing with you, just sharing a little of my quick internet search that came about because your comment interested me.
I DRIVE, I DRIVE, I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!
Actually, I drive a Tahoe. No troubles with it at all. Except that it sucked when gas was $4+ per a year or so ago. But that's why I have a bike I can ride to work if I want to.
Datsun was a US only name badge, was it not?
My sister's first car was a Datsun 240Z. She hated it. I thought it was very cool and that she didn't deserve it. I was right.
PF is correct, US change only.
Norm,
If I rode a bike to work, I'd have to leave the house around 3:30 a.m, and I'd get home around 1:30 a.m. I'd save a ton of money and lose a ton of weight, though.
morning all
Stu
You not working today?
When I got married I had a 2004 Nissan Frontier. (I LOVED that truck.) My wife had a 96 camry. I traveled alot for work, so the 4 dollar gas hit me pretty hard, even in that thing. That and I made a BAD deal on it when I bought it. I traded it in on the Corrolla in June of 08. (I think mine was the first new Corrolla in the area.) I gave her the Corrolla and I drove the old camry. (I would rather it be me on the side of the road than her.)
I wish I had just kept that truck. Nissan/Datsun make a GREAT small to midsize truck.
bigdaddy, I am working, just not very hard.
Obviously you are not either.
Boos man is on the phone so I jumped on here right quick
Boss = Boos
You mean boss man is on the phone?
He does run a tight ship over there.
You can say that but that is what I also get for working for my father-in-law
Flippin time!
You on the road this week? You still behind Lebo or you ready for him to go
Where's Phred?
Doh!

Get a room, you two.
We're talking about Luv's automobile problem and Michael's goats here (don't tell Michael, he gets mad when he finds us talking about his business).
That's true. I had to work Saturday from 7:15am to 6:30pm while we updated the system. Half the time I chatted on here, (developers were REALLY slow) all the while banking time and a half.
It was geat day, props to those hotties.
bigdaddy,
I am in the office, and I am undecided about Lebo.
Phred? It's yours if you still want it.
Working on Saturday sucks.
BOOM!!!
Seastrunk announces at 4:15 today.
damn
PF's a ninja
