Calling around on Cam Newton: First and Last Part

Hey everyone. I am working on a story about Cam Newton, Auburn's 5-star quarterback who signed last month. He played sparingly during two seasons at Florida. He played all the time at Blinn (Texas) College.

I've been talking with the Southwest Junior College Football Conference coaches who schemed against Newton last fall.

Here's what Donnie Bigby, head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma, had to say.

Newton's numbers in Blinn's 55-42 win against NEO:
17-29, 302 yards, 2 TDs

*OF NOTE -- Newton was suspended for the first quarter.

Bigby on Newton: ``He's the most athletic and skilled quarterback I've seen since Michael Bishop. (Bishop, who later starred at Kansas State, played at Blinn in 1996.) You could tell he had tons and tons of potential. I'm talking about raw talent you just don't see at this level."

Bigby on what NEO did to match up with Newton: ``He's such a big kid. He looks like a defensive lineman, to be honest. I think he'd be a tough matchup on his own -- if he was the only guy on his team. The thing is that he had a great supporting cast last season. We couldn't just worry about him, but he created a lot of problems."

I picked up this quote from another site. Presumably this is a quote that Kiffen made on the Jim Rome show a couple of days ago

"Recruits weren't coming to Tennessee to wear the yellow uniform. They were coming to play for this coaching staff."

So what we have here is a Tool making an arrogant comment to another Tool. I'm sure Rome didn't prompt the comment or anything like that.

Thinks Lattimore is (CHizik visits Thursday, Spurrier visits Saturday) still AU bound. Thinks AU is the team to beat for Bryan Jones.

There comes a point, though, where China (and other investors) will raise an eyebrow if they think they'll never get paid back and cut back on what debt they're willing to buy from us. Who has any idea what that point is, but we owe a lot of people a lot of money right now.

About 5 yrs ago the morons up here tried to get a commuter rail project started to connect Raleigh, Durham, and Hillsborough (the tiny county seat of Orange Co. where Chapel Hill is). It wasn't designed to go to Chapel Hill, UNC, any of the major malls, or the airport. It would have been useless. Most "foreign" cars are made in the U.S., aren't they?

8:36 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

depends. Most foreign manufacturers have facilities in the US, but they don't all necessarily make the cars from start to finish here. Even those that do don't do their whole lines here. For instance, Kia makes a few cars here, and is pushing to move towards a model like Toyotas, but doesn't make 100% of the cars they sell in America here yet. Same with Benz.

Luv, I really don't know. The dealer in Chattanooga was no help on the mat recall for the camry. (I don't want to drive to Atlanta in two cars to where I bought them.)

I guess I am going to call that 1-800 customer number and see what it says to do.

I wonder what's on page 2 of Jay G's article today.

I don't gamble, but I'd almost be willing to bet $5 monopoly money that we don't make it to 600.

MJT - page 2 was EPIC. Truly great stuff indeed.

THT - we're a bit closer to it now.

oops, I forgot to credit Jay G. Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser for the above page 2.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

a quick internet search found THT's big three to be correct: Toyota, Honda and Nissan (Nissan destroys Mazda, fwiw).

Also, of the big three, Toyota is the only one that produces the majority of their vehicles outside of Japan.

There is also something known as the Big Asian Four that includes Dear Leader's Cousin's auto line Hyundai.

9:21 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

we also have a Hyundai. It hasn't given us even the tiniest of problems. But if it does, I know I can go straight to DL and he'll take care of it.

9:23 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Dear Leader would have to call his cousin, though. I heard they're not talking anymore.

9:24 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

stupup, I don't know if I'm going to do anything just yet. According to the guy on the ABC news last night, Toyota probably really doesn't know what the problem is.

PF, I clarified my statement. You guys are so picky about details. Sheesh!

Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Remember when Nissan was Datsun?

9:28 AM
Blogger stupup74 said...

Luv, I think your right. The mat thing was a joke when we asked about it at the dealer.

I guess I will wait and see and hope I don't plow into a tree.

(I knew I should have bought a Honda.)

I wasn't arguing with you, just sharing a little of my quick internet search that came about because your comment interested me.

I DRIVE, I DRIVE, I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS!

Actually, I drive a Tahoe. No troubles with it at all. Except that it sucked when gas was $4+ per a year or so ago. But that's why I have a bike I can ride to work if I want to.

9:32 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Datsun was a US only name badge, was it not?

My sister's first car was a Datsun 240Z. She hated it. I thought it was very cool and that she didn't deserve it. I was right.

9:34 AM
Blogger Norm said...

PF is correct, US change only.

9:35 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Norm,

If I rode a bike to work, I'd have to leave the house around 3:30 a.m, and I'd get home around 1:30 a.m. I'd save a ton of money and lose a ton of weight, though.

You not working today?

When I got married I had a 2004 Nissan Frontier. (I LOVED that truck.) My wife had a 96 camry. I traveled alot for work, so the 4 dollar gas hit me pretty hard, even in that thing. That and I made a BAD deal on it when I bought it. I traded it in on the Corrolla in June of 08. (I think mine was the first new Corrolla in the area.) I gave her the Corrolla and I drove the old camry. (I would rather it be me on the side of the road than her.)

I wish I had just kept that truck. Nissan/Datsun make a GREAT small to midsize truck.

That's true. I had to work Saturday from 7:15am to 6:30pm while we updated the system. Half the time I chatted on here, (developers were REALLY slow) all the while banking time and a half.

It was geat day, props to those hotties.
